Vija Celmins Solo Exhibition at Fondation Beyeler

The Fondation Beyeler hosts an extensive solo exhibition dedicated to Vija Celmins (*1938, Riga), an artist known for her work in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Early in her career, Celmins depicted everyday objects alongside scenes of war and catastrophe, later shifting her focus to the intricate textures of spider webs, oceans, deserts, and, more recently, the night sky and celestial bodies. The exhibition showcases a range of Celmins’ creations from the 1960s to today. It also includes a select group of her sculptures, which she describes as “three-dimensional paintings.” Additionally, a new series of works is on display, continuing her exploration of surfaces and spatial depth. This exhibition marks the most significant display of Celmins’ art in Europe in nearly two decades. The exhibition runs until September 21, 2025.
