00:00Oh
00:30Hello
00:32Hello everybody
00:34Good evening
00:36You are so welcome to the show
00:38Yes, Autumn is here and like a misty September morning
00:40I'm back
00:42Cool grey and just a little bit damp
00:44Anyway, we've got a great line up for our first show of the season
00:46Look over there singing for us later
00:48It's the fabulous Ray
00:52Love Ray
00:54She'll be performing her new single
00:56Where is my husband
00:58Where are my guests
01:00Let's get them on
01:02First off, we love them as the prime solving
01:04Dicker in Grantchester and we love to hate
01:06him as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley
01:08Now he brings us the epic succession drama
01:10House of Guinness
01:12It's our good friend James Norton
01:18There he is
01:20Really nice to see you
01:22There he is, James Norton
01:24This Oscar winning actor
01:26Swaggered into our screens
01:28In Days of Confused
01:30Won our hearts in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
01:32And was out of this world
01:34In Interstellar
01:36His latest book, Poems and Prayers
01:38Is already a Sunday Times bestseller
01:40While he returns to our screens
01:42In a heroic true story
01:44Here is a warm welcome back
01:46To Matthew McConaughey
01:50Here he comes
01:52Hello son, it's really good to see you
01:54There you go
01:56Yes, that's Matthew McConaughey
01:58Yes
02:00And we've got two stars
02:02From the new sports drama
02:04The Smashing Machine
02:06She made her mark in The Devil Wears Prada
02:08Thrilled us in A Quiet Place
02:10And was Oscar nominated for a performance
02:12In the global hit Oppenheimer
02:14In Blunt everybody
02:16Oh, so shiny
02:18So shimmery
02:20So famous
02:22So nice to see you
02:24Thank you
02:26And as The Rock
02:28He conquered the wrestling world
02:30Before turning action movie star
02:32With roles in it's like Jumanji
02:34Moana and the Fast and Furious franchise
02:36Now earning rave reviews for his performance
02:38As champion wrestler Mark Kerr
02:40In The Smashing Machine
02:42It's the mighty Dwayne Johnson
02:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:46Hey, welcome along, what a couch
03:00Sit down, sit down, sit down
03:02Lovely
03:04Welcome along, thank you very much for being here
03:06Lovely to see you all
03:07Cheers
03:09For a show back
03:10Cheers
03:11Cheers
03:12OK
03:13Yeah
03:14If you're wondering
03:15Tequila
03:18Now some of you know it
03:19James
03:20I've got to ask
03:21Are you alright
03:22Because you injured yourself
03:23Are you alright
03:24Because you don't know anyone
03:25Well
03:28I feel like I know you
03:29I know you
03:30Yeah
03:31And you've met the other backstage
03:32I have
03:33We had a lovely time
03:34We've discussed tequila
03:35Yeah
03:36Just tequila shortly
03:37Just tequila shortly
03:38I did get into it
03:39Am I alright?
03:40No, I am fine
03:41This is the thing that's on now
03:42King and Conqueror, which is on BBC One on Sunday nights
03:44Yes
03:45I fell off a horse
03:46That's cool, look at that
03:47Yeah, I fell off a horse and I broke my collarbone
03:49Now in Iceland
03:50Now in Iceland
03:51Now I was thinking
03:52Oh, that must be terrible to fall off a horse
03:53Quite a distance
03:54And then I saw a picture of you with the horse
03:56And you are taller than
03:57Yeah
03:58That's right
03:59So Iceland
04:00Surely a pony
04:02It is a pony
04:03OK
04:04Yeah, yeah, so Iceland have a protective order on their horses
04:06You cannot import a horse
04:07Because they have this kind of gene pool
04:08And it doesn't
04:09It can't be polluted
04:10And so we were having committed to shoot the whole thing in Iceland
04:13And I was a producer on the show as well
04:14So we were tasked with finding the biggest Icelandic ponies we could find
04:18And they were
04:19That was the biggest we could find
04:20Even though it was that small
04:22I still broke my collarbone from falling from that great height
04:25So yeah
04:26When did it happen?
04:27It happened at the very beginning of all the stunt sequences
04:30That's fun
04:31Yeah
04:32Stunts though
04:33If you have one of those scenes where you might get injured
04:35It's a good thing to schedule those at the end of the show
04:37Yeah
04:38End of the show
04:39End of the show
04:40Yeah, it was rehearsal
04:41Yeah
04:42Yeah, well
04:43Producers will do that
04:44They'll put the big stunt
04:46Wait, but he's producing
04:47It was my show
04:48He is the producer
04:49I learnt a lot
04:50I learnt a lot
04:53But also
04:54Looking at that
04:55Dwayne
04:56Never do an historical epic in Iceland
04:58Because that pony would not survive
05:00No
05:01By the way
05:02Does a regular horse make a noise when you get on it?
05:05Like does it go
05:06Does it go
05:07Oh
05:08Me?
05:09Yeah
05:10Why?
05:11Because there's a lot of muscle mass there
05:12I don't
05:13I mean that
05:14A horse would be going
05:15Oh Jesus
05:16Look at this
05:17It groans
05:18Many things groan when I get on it
05:19Yes
05:20Yes
05:21I'm writing that down
05:22I'm writing that down
05:23Thank you
05:24All right
05:25Let's get on with our first film tonight
05:26Dwayne and Emily are together in The Smashing Machine
05:27It's in cinemas from the 3rd of October
05:28And here's just a little taste of what to expect
05:42Hey Don
05:44Can you take this picture for us?
05:45Yeah
05:46What are you thinking at the beginning of the fight?
05:48It's simple
05:49Am I going to hurt him before he hurts me?
05:52Yes
05:53There was a light
05:55I will show you
05:59This Grand Prix to crown the greatest fighter in the world
06:07He has come back from the break
06:10Let's see if he can pull out a victory over Mark Coleman
06:14Have you spoken to either about fighting such a good friend for a life changing amount of money?
06:19Good morning
06:21I just need you to let me in
06:23I took the blue
06:24Always about you
06:25Only about fucking you
06:26Everything is about you
06:27But my way
06:31Let's fucking go
06:40Extra man
06:41I love you
06:46So good
06:47Thank you man
06:49Thank you
06:50Thank you
06:52Thank you brother
06:53It is phenomenal
06:54It's a true story
06:55Mark Kerr
06:56He was sort of the first star to come out of the MMA UFC world
07:00He was yeah for a lot of you who don't know him
07:02And a lot of people don't know him
07:03Mark Kerr was the first
07:05He was one of the pioneers of
07:07There he is right there of MMA
07:08And he was at one time
07:10He was the greatest fighter on the planet
07:12Heavyweight fighter
07:13And at that time there were no rules, no regulations
07:16And MMA was different
07:18And there was no infrastructure around it
07:20There was no financial planning
07:22There was just fighters
07:24And Mark fought his way to the top
07:28And he struggled
07:30And he struggled like a lot of fighters do
07:32Unfortunately though he struggled under pressure
07:34And the pressure in many ways got to him
07:36There was addiction involved
07:37And he wound up overdosing twice
07:39And he was lucky to be alive
07:40But he's here today
07:42And not here in the audience
07:43But he is alive
07:44Ladies and gentlemen
07:46Mark Kerr
07:47But he is with us today
07:48And he had this unbelievable life
07:51And he had this volcanic relationship
07:54With his girlfriend
07:55Who eventually became his wife
07:56And they have a beautiful son named Bryce
07:58So it was really the role of a lifetime
08:01And so Emily tell us about Dawn
08:03Yeah
08:04I mean she's an extraordinary person
08:06You know
08:07And I found her
08:08When I spoke to her
08:09Sort of simultaneously heartbreaking
08:11And fierce
08:12And I think it is a very complex relationship
08:17To be in
08:18When you're with a very dedicated athlete
08:22Whose life is on the line constantly
08:24Yeah
08:25Through his own addiction
08:26Through actually being in the ring
08:27And they did have this rather hazardous relationship
08:30But I think the movie is less about
08:34You know
08:35It's set to the backdrop of this 90s machismo
08:38But it's so about vulnerability
08:40And the brokenness
08:41And like how you never really know
08:42What's going on in someone's life
08:43You know
08:44And the image of invincibility
08:45Is not really the truth
08:47You know
08:48And we've got to talk about
08:49The Venice Film Festival
08:50Because you took actual Mark Kerr with you
08:52Yeah
08:53So I mean obviously emotional to watch it
08:55But to watch it with him
08:56There you go
08:57To watch it with him
08:58That was the first time he'd seen it right?
08:59It was the first time he'd seen it right?
09:00It was the first time he'd seen it with an audience
09:02So we get to the Venice Film Festival
09:04Which we're there for competition
09:05And we're sitting there and watching it
09:07I sat next to Mark
09:08Mark's a big guy
09:09And I could feel him
09:11And he's shaking
09:12He's shaking the entire movie
09:14Especially the fight scenes with him and his girlfriend
09:16Who eventually became his wife Dawn
09:18He's shaking
09:19Every once in a while
09:20I reach over and grab his knee
09:21And towards the end of the movie
09:23Where we have the big scene
09:25Yeah
09:26With Emily and I
09:27Don't ruin it
09:28I won't ruin it
09:29Don't over bitch
09:30Keep going
09:31I won't
09:32I won't
09:33I won't
09:34I won't
09:35So anyway
09:36You'll never guess what happened
09:37And then he is really shaking and crying
09:41And then I look over and Benny Safdie's holding his hand
09:44And you know in Venice Film Festival it's very ceremonial right?
09:48As we know
09:49And it means a lot
09:50Films mean a lot to people in Venice
09:52Yeah
09:53And at the Venice Film Festival
09:54And before the credits came up
09:56Um
09:57The audience erupts
09:59And they give us a fifteen and a half minute standing ovation
10:03And Mark Kerr is sobbing which makes us all cry
10:08Yeah
10:09Benny as well
10:10And it was just beautiful
10:11We've got a little bit of footage of the ovation
10:13Yes
10:14And I say
10:15It goes
10:16I mean it's incredible
10:17Look at me
10:18By the way
10:19Yes
10:20Let's wait till this is over
10:21So I can embarrass you
10:22I know
10:23Look at your face
10:24Yes
10:25Mark Kerr is beside me
10:26Yes
10:27Mark Kerr is beside me
10:28That's Mark
10:29So there I am
10:30Right
10:31I'm
10:32Very emotional
10:33House lights come on
10:34Before they're expected
10:35I'm crying
10:36And I'm trying to wipe my tears away
10:38To try and still stay cool
10:39And this one is like
10:41Can you believe that we did that thing
10:43Whatever the fucking joke was
10:44No I didn't
10:45You can see
10:46What are you talking about
10:47You can see in the clip that he's crying
10:49And I went
10:50Do you remember on Jungle Cruise
10:51When you said you never cried
10:52I'm in a moment
10:53I'm in a moment
10:54I'm in a moment
10:55I'm in a moment
10:56I'm in a moment
10:57It's like the British thing
10:58No I think it's the British thing
10:59No I think it's the British thing
11:00Like where
11:01It's like it's a long time for people to be clapping
11:03And I start to get embarrassed
11:04Yeah
11:05Yeah
11:06So I started making jokes
11:07Because I was like
11:08Oh God
11:09This is so much
11:10Yes
11:11Yes
11:12Yes
11:13Yes
11:14It's hard
11:15Thank you so much
11:16And here's the thing
11:17You know just watching the trailer there
11:19You know that idea of Dwayne Johnson disappearing into any role
11:23You kind of think oh how can you transform
11:25But you do
11:26Oh yeah
11:27What what
11:28And it's not just the physical thing
11:30Because it's obviously this hair
11:31But other things went on
11:32It was about 22 prosthetics
11:34We had Kazuhiro who's our Oscar winning prosthetic artist
11:38And he helped me transform
11:39There was also a vocal transformation too
11:41But the idea I think of transforming for me
11:45Was something that you know I didn't know that I was
11:49I didn't know that that was for me
11:51And I wanted to do that
11:52Because a lot of times in the movies that I've made in the past
11:55The bigger movies they're big and they're fun
11:57And I've liked them from Jumanji to Moana
12:00And I'll go back to those
12:02But there was something about this opportunity
12:04Where there was a little
12:06There was a voice behind my ribcage
12:08That was just telling me right
12:09So like it's like
12:11And I'd share this with Emily for years
12:13Like it's just it's gnawing at my gut to do more
12:17And challenge myself
12:18And grow
12:19And do something
12:20Where I'm not chasing box office
12:23But I'm doing it for me
12:24Yeah
12:25And it wound up being the most greatest most gratifying thing
12:29And I've said this before and I mean it
12:31Smash machine changed my life
12:33Well you so pulled it off
12:35Thank you very much
12:36It really is phenomenal
12:37And Matthew
12:38I'm interested because
12:39You had a kind of similar career pivot
12:41Yeah
12:42To what Dwayne's doing now
12:43Yeah
12:44Where you had this incredibly successful career
12:46With rom-coms
12:47Rom-coms
12:48And you went no I'm going to search out
12:50Different sorts of parts
12:51More meaningful parts
12:52How hard was it to turn your back on that
12:54Incredibly successful career
12:55So similar to what Dwayne said
12:56I had that 4 a.m. in my solitude on my own
12:59Truth that hit me
13:01It lands like a butterfly and strikes like a lightning bolt
13:04At the same time
13:05That truth that you go
13:06Okay
13:07Tomorrow when the sun comes up
13:08And I'm back in the masses
13:09And all the world's coming at me
13:10And all those offers
13:11I need to remember this truth
13:12Now
13:13I've been trying to get dramas
13:15And was even offering huge pay cuts
13:16And they're like
13:17No stay in your lane McConaughey
13:18You're the rom-com guy
13:19You got that down
13:20Mind you I enjoyed him
13:21But I was wanting to do something different
13:22Yeah
13:23Because I couldn't do what I wanted to do
13:24I said I got to stop doing what I'm doing
13:25So I said no more
13:26No more rom-coms
13:28Called the agent
13:29Said let the town know
13:30It's not going to happen
13:31I went to Texas
13:32Camilla's pregnant
13:33On the ranch
13:34Quiet down there
13:35Camilla says to me
13:36Look you don't know how long it's going to be dry
13:37How long you're going to not go with work
13:38This could go on
13:39But this is non-negotiable
13:41We're not going back
13:42I was like
13:43Not going back
13:44Now
13:45A year goes by
13:46Nothing
13:47Nothing
13:48I call my agent
13:49He goes
13:50Matthew I haven't even heard your name in six months
13:51Mmm
13:52I'm going okay
13:53I may have just wrote myself a one way ticket out of Hollywood
13:55I start to think about other vocations
13:57School teacher
13:58Wildlife guide
14:00Maybe I go back to law school
14:01Alright
14:0218 months go by
14:04I really think I've done it
14:06I'm out
14:07I get this romantic action comedy
14:10It comes with an 8 million dollar offer
14:12I read it
14:13I pass
14:14I say no thank you
14:15Comes back with a 10 million dollar offer
14:16I said no thank you
14:17Comes back with a 12 million dollar offer
14:18I said no thank you
14:19It comes back with a 14.5 million dollar offer
14:22I said
14:23Let me read that thing
14:26Yay
14:27Same words as the 8 million dollar offer
14:29But it was better
14:30It was funnier
14:31I could see myself
14:32This could work
14:33Right
14:34But I ultimately said no
14:35That must be so hard to say no
14:37It was
14:38But
14:39Saying no to it
14:40Thank you Hunter Lotus
14:41I think sent
14:42A little invisible message to Hollywood
14:44Oh McConaughey's not bluffing
14:46We were talking about not flinching
14:47Yes
14:48Oh he's playing offense
14:49He's not just doing nothing
14:51He's playing
14:52He's on to something
14:54And
14:5520 months
14:56Two months after I turned that down
14:58The offers came in
14:59That I was looking for
15:00And they came in in droves
15:02It went Killer Joe
15:03Mudd
15:04The True Detective
15:05Dallas Buyers
15:06Magic Mike
15:07They came in
15:08Everything I was looking for
15:09They would not have come in
15:10If I wouldn't have unbranded
15:12For that 20 months
15:13Yes
15:14Alright
15:15Now Dwayne you didn't have to unbrand
15:16You had enough steam going
15:17I can make whatever choice I want
15:19And I'm going to make this happen over here
15:21It was a time for me where I had to unbrand
15:23And it took 20 months
15:24But
15:25Then I was doing
15:26And all of a sudden my work was challenging
15:27The vitality I liked
15:28I was like
15:29There we go
15:30So cool
15:31Absolutely
15:32And
15:33And I don't think that every actor that wants to be successful
15:39But then you don't want to be typecast
15:40And James
15:41You know
15:42You were
15:43So good
15:44As Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley
15:46You
15:47At that kind of psychotic
15:49Like
15:50Were you just offered lots of psycho villains after that or
15:59Or
16:00Yeah
16:01Yeah
16:02I seem to get offered roles where they present as nice and kind of civil
16:06And then underneath they have a heart of stone
16:08And I don't know what that says about me but
16:10I mean
16:11I haven't
16:12I haven't had to rebrand which is lovely
16:14I've
16:15You know
16:16Been lucky
16:17I've been able to kind of twist and turns
16:18And I think that's the way you keep learning
16:19And keep it fresh
16:20That's what every actor wants
16:21And
16:22Yeah
16:23I mean the villains are also really interesting
16:24Like the one I'm playing right now is a beast
16:26Yes
16:27So you know
16:28I get to play
16:29And yeah
16:30But I have to say
16:31I've cited you as someone
16:32Who has done it
16:33And you know
16:34Now you as well Duane
16:35Like someone who has done it
16:36So elegantly
16:37You managed to
16:38Advance the grain
16:39Because the producers they want their job to be done easily
16:40You know
16:41You don't want your actor to have to go on these massive transformative journeys
16:44Because it costs money
16:45And you have to get dialect coaches in and everything else
16:47You want the actor to walk in as the character
16:49And actually what we want to do is go on those journeys
16:51Which you guys have just described so beautifully
16:53So yeah
16:54It's a tough kind of struggle
16:56Talking of returning to our role
16:58We've seen a lot of paparazzi pictures of Miss Emily Blunt recently
17:02Because you
17:03Are you still filming The Devil Wears Prada 2?
17:06Yeah
17:07It must be lovely to be making something that people are so happy about
17:13They are so excited about it
17:15It is incredibly sweet
17:17I mean we're trying to keep as much of it under wraps as we can
17:20But it's not just the paparazzi
17:21It's the fans outside
17:23I've never experienced this
17:24Where it's just thousands of people waiting outside the sets
17:27And I think when we made the first one
17:29Like we thought it was funny
17:30We were like
17:31It's pretty funny
17:32And then it comes out
17:33And I was a kid
17:35You know when it came out
17:36I mean it's 20 years ago
17:37And I remember my agent calling me going
17:39You know this
17:40This is the opening weekend
17:41I was like
17:42Is that good?
17:43Like I didn't know
17:44What was success was?
17:46And so it had this meteoric life
17:48And it's amazing to come back to it
17:51And because to make the second one
17:53Obviously they needed the four of you
17:54You, Stanley, Anne and Merrill
17:55Yeah
17:56So did the four of you have a lot of say
17:58In what the story was going to be?
17:59Or
18:00We did
18:01I mean I think they were very collaborative on it
18:03And you know they wanted everyone to be happy
18:06They wanted us in cahoots with them
18:08So it was really, really cool
18:10Well we look forward to that
18:12But before then
18:13Do I urge you
18:14Go see Emily and Dwayne
18:15Give extraordinary performances in
18:17The Smashing Machine
18:18In cinemas from October the 3rd
18:20Great
18:21Thank you
18:22Good day
18:23Thank you
18:24OK
18:26Next up
18:27Matthew McConaughey
18:28He brings us the latest offering
18:30From director Paul Greengrass
18:32It's called
18:33The Lost Bus
18:34And it's out now
18:35In selected cinemas
18:36Then on Apple TV Plus
18:38From the 3rd of October
18:39Before we talk about it
18:40Here's some of the trail
18:42At approximately 6.30am this morning
18:44A fire entered
18:45The town of paradise
18:50Where do you need to get to?
18:53My son's up there with his grandma
18:58It's too late
19:01It's too late
19:04I'm too late as a father
19:13It's not too late
19:14I'm too late
19:21Wowza
19:22Wowza
19:25Thank you so cool
19:27Thank you so cool
19:29Wow
19:30And again
19:31This is another extraordinary true story
19:33Yeah
19:34These awful awful California wildfires in 2018
19:37And this kind of reluctant hero
19:39Tell us about Adam McKay
19:41Kevin McKay
19:42Kevin McKay
19:43Kevin McKay sorry
19:44In our story he's come home
19:45Because his father died
19:47And he's there to take care of his widowed mother
19:50And reconcile our relationship with his son
19:52From an earlier divorce in his life
19:54He's got a part time job as a school bus driver
19:56On this particular day
19:58Took the kids to school
19:59Dropped them off
20:01Was out and about
20:02And fires were coming across the canyon
20:04They did
20:05It happened all the time
20:06No one even got alarmed
20:07They always
20:08The first responders head up there and put them out
20:10But on this day
20:11The winds came and the fires jumped the canyon
20:13So the first responders were stuck
20:15And while they were stuck
20:17They called it a mandatory evacuation
20:19Out of the town of paradise
20:21When that happens Kevin McKay has just made the decision
20:25I'm going to go back and get my mom
20:27And my son who cannot drive
20:29I'm going to save them
20:30Evacuate them
20:31Not two minutes later
20:33It comes through dispatch
20:34I've got 23 kids stranded on the east side of town
20:37Does anyone on that side of town have an empty bus?
20:39Well guess who's got an empty bus?
20:43Do you pick that up and say yes?
20:45Or do you go get your mom and your son?
20:49He picked it up
20:51And he said I got him
20:53He picks him up
20:54There's a teacher with a Mary Lugwig
20:56Who's played by America Ferreira
20:58And this is the story about the next six, seven, eight hours
21:01Of what happens
21:02Wow
21:03And you mentioned the personal side of the idea of being attacked
21:05Yeah
21:06And of course that's incredibly present in this film
21:09Because it is a family affair
21:11Yes it is
21:12Check this out
21:13Ha ha ha
21:15I go home and pitch the script to my family
21:18Family as I always do
21:19Here's what it's about
21:20You know
21:21And if it's too R-rated
21:22You've got to kind of do it in a parable form
21:25Kids were old enough
21:26I told them straight
21:27This one was about straight
21:28I get to the part about my son
21:31And my son Levi
21:32Who was 15 at the time goes
21:33Is that part cast yet?
21:34I said no
21:35He goes
21:36You think I can read for it?
21:37Oh my god
21:38And I just kind of look at him
21:39Huh?
21:40Had he ever read for anything before?
21:41No
21:42So this surprises me
21:43But I kind of just give him a shoulder
21:44And like yeah right
21:45He comes back
21:46Next day
21:47The next day he badgers me four times
21:48I said okay
21:49All right
21:50First off
21:51Sit down
21:52We're going to talk about what this acting gig is
21:53I said this ain't modeling
21:55This ain't no attitude
21:57All right
21:58This is a frickin' rodeo
21:59And you got to go with soul
22:01And no bullshit in your bone
22:03So he goes
22:04Well I already got a scene
22:05Worked out I want to shoot
22:06So I pulled out my camera shot
22:07And I was like first take
22:08Okay
22:09Kids got present
22:10He was able to behave honestly
22:12In front of the camera
22:13I was like that's for starters
22:14You need that
22:15Did two takes
22:16I sent it to the casting director
22:17With a note saying
22:18I think this is good enough for a call back
22:21She writes back and says
22:22I think it's good enough to send to the director Paul Greengrass
22:24I said great
22:26And it dawned on me
22:27Wait a minute
22:28Do me a favor
22:29Can you pull his last name?
22:30If he gets it
22:33Is he going to have an inkling
22:35That the last name helped him?
22:36Oh I don't want that happening
22:37So she pulled the last name
22:38Goes into Levi
22:39Paul sees it
22:40The director
22:41Looks like this
22:42This is the kid
22:43She said
22:44Well you know it's actually Matthew's son in real life
22:45He goes
22:46Even better
22:47Oh that's so cool
22:48And then so it's lovely
22:49Your son's in it
22:50Your mom's in it
22:51My mom's in it
22:52My mom's in it
22:53Tell them who she plays
22:55Tell them who she plays
22:56No she plays
22:57My mother
22:59There she is
23:01Kate McCauley
23:0293 years young
23:03Oh my god she's gorgeous
23:05Right
23:06No but look at your son as well
23:07Wow
23:10So what we're going through
23:12Paul and I would get together every week
23:14And kind of just go over the last week
23:16How we doing?
23:17Are we missing anything?
23:18Is there anything we want to do?
23:19Anything special?
23:20And the news was always good
23:21We were always happy with everything that was going
23:22But he said
23:23About four weeks in
23:24He goes I got one problem
23:25He goes I think I miscast the mother
23:26And I either misdirected it
23:27Or we got to rewrite this scene
23:28Do you know
23:29Do you have any idea
23:30Who could play your mother?
23:31I said let me think about it
23:33Next day he goes
23:34What about your mom?
23:35Wow
23:36You've been making this family affair
23:37Paul said hang on a second
23:38He goes
23:39Let's just cast her
23:40I said hang on
23:41Hang on before we just cast her
23:42Let me get her in front of you
23:43And I said
23:44Mom
23:45Can you send me
23:46A minute video on your phone
23:48Of why you love being a mom?
23:49She sends me an eight minute video
23:51I show that to Paul
23:53He's like
23:54Yes
23:55That's her
23:56What was that conversation like
23:57When you told your mom?
23:58Wow
23:59She was already into
24:01Like let me check with my agent
24:03Which she didn't have
24:07She was already like
24:08Yeah
24:09Well let me think about it
24:10Yeah
24:12That's awesome
24:13This is all sounding very familiar to
24:15James Norton
24:16Because your dad
24:17Has he been in every single thing you've done?
24:20Dad? Has he?
24:21My dad has been in nearly everything I've ever done
24:23Yeah
24:24I'm terrified of him watching this
24:25Because I know I'm going to get a text saying
24:26Why can't I play your dad?
24:27I want to
24:28I want to
24:29You know
24:30I've got my notes ready
24:31He mostly does kind of supporting background work
24:32Yeah
24:33He does a day as an essay on everything I do
24:35So here he is in the house of Guinness
24:37This is your current project
24:39Oh God
24:40There he is
24:41But we have found footage of him
24:43From war and peace
24:44This is
24:45It's over
24:46Is it ten years ago?
24:47More than ten
24:48At least
24:49He flew himself out to Lithuania to shoot this
24:50Yeah
24:51I did wonder
24:52Yeah
24:53How the hell he ended up in Lithuania to be in this
24:54So he flew himself
24:55He loves it
24:56Yeah, yeah
24:57Okay
24:58He gets a free haircut
24:59He kind of struts around the set like a peacock
25:01Gets, you know
25:02You're not in this scene
25:04But keep an eye out
25:06I'll show you James out here
25:08I mean blink and you might miss him
25:10But here we go
25:11A warm piece
25:12It's all going very well
25:13Lovely
25:14Very dramatic
25:15And look
25:16Who's that in the moustache?
25:17There you go
25:20Did he keep the moustache?
25:22Yeah
25:23He loved it
25:24Did he keep the moustache?
25:25He didn't keep the moustache
25:26No
25:27It's a new one in house of Guinness
25:28It's a new one in house of Guinness
25:29Yeah
25:30In house of Guinness
25:31He had to throw a bottle at me
25:32And he's not the most coordinated
25:33It was in a stunt sequence
25:34And he had to throw the bottle multiple times
25:36But yeah, no, he loves it
25:37So when he comes out
25:38Is it specifically for one scene?
25:39Or does he just lurk around for many background scenes?
25:42No, no, no
25:43We make sure that he's only on for one scene
25:44I mean, he would
25:45He would if he had the choice
25:46Get an agent
25:47I mean, I'm terrified
25:48But has he never asked for lines?
25:50Has he never asked for lines?
25:51Has he never had a line in one thing?
25:52Oh, it was terrible
25:53He had a
25:54I'm sorry dad
25:55Dad
25:56He had a line in Lady Chatley's Lover
25:58And I remember him
25:59It was
26:00The director said
26:01Hugh, let's give you a line
26:03And he improvised something
26:04About the state of the coal mine
26:06And he looks at me
26:07He goes
26:08What the fuck?
26:09Like how do I
26:10And then it was
26:11I don't know about you
26:12But your son and your mum
26:13Obviously clearly
26:14Much more talented than my dad
26:15Because he was terrible
26:16And I was standing there
26:17And I'm trying to stay in character
26:18And all I have is this man
26:19Going
26:20The coal is not coming up the ground
26:22Terrible
26:24Terrible
26:25Really distracting
26:26When you're a bad
26:27Terrible actor
26:28And Dwayne, your mum
26:31She didn't act
26:32But she has now done some acting
26:34She has
26:35We actually
26:36So I followed in Matthew's path
26:37And I put her in
26:39I cast her
26:40In live action Moana
26:42So she's in that
26:43Yeah
26:44Does she have lines?
26:45No, thank God
26:46OK
26:47You went the Norton route
26:49No, yes, that's it
26:50You've talked about her before
26:52But I love the idea of your mother
26:54She enjoys your fame very much
26:56She loves it
26:57She does
26:58My mum's had a tough life
26:59And she
27:00So now she's living like
27:01There she is
27:02She's just living her best life
27:04And she does
27:05She's my biggest fan
27:06And she has this crazy room
27:09That's called the Smackdown room
27:11And in the Smackdown
27:12It's just all me
27:15Yes
27:16Everything that
27:17I mean every little thing
27:19Anything you can think of
27:20She just shoves it in there
27:22And then there's your
27:23Does your mum have something like that?
27:24My mum has the same room
27:25Not of you
27:26But it's of all my stuff
27:28That would be weird
27:31She would be amazing
27:32So your mum is your biggest fan?
27:33Yes
27:34But she also
27:35She is my biggest fan
27:36But she also is very clear to take credit
27:39For all of
27:40Wow
27:41Every role I've ever played
27:43Here's what she comes up after
27:44She goes
27:45She goes
27:46Matt you did so good
27:47I can tell where you got it from
27:51Very proud
27:52But we
27:53That
27:54We're fine now
27:55My ship's stable enough
27:56Where I'm like
27:57Mum say whatever you want
27:58Whatever you want
27:59Now that she's got a great agent
28:00She's good
28:01Yes
28:02But also she published a book
28:03Yes
28:04Can you remember what the name of the book was?
28:05Oh yes
28:06Because I'm
28:07She probably
28:08Has already put a sticker of the title of the book
28:09On my truck
28:10It's called I Amaze Myself
28:16I feel like every book
28:17Every book should be called I Amaze Myself
28:19No she's a legend
28:21That is amazing
28:22Chapter 26
28:23Guess what the title is?
28:24Some people deserve to be pissed on
28:27What is Christmas like in your house?
28:37It's wild
28:38Is it novel?
28:39No it's short stories
28:41Some people
28:42It's probably helped out some people
28:44She's very much a
28:45She gets by on positive thinking and denial
28:49And it works
28:51And she's 93 and not shallow
28:53And kicking ass
28:54So I love her
28:55Talking of books
28:56I must say
28:57After the success of your memoir
28:59Greenlights
29:00You know I have a new book
29:01Poems and Prayers
29:02Yes
29:03Number one in the New York Times
29:04We already know that it's going to be
29:05In the bestseller list
29:06In the Sunday Times
29:07Yes
29:08Thank you
29:09Thank you
29:10And
29:11From what I read
29:12So a lot of the material in here
29:15You've been working on
29:16Off and on for years
29:17Yes
29:18So this is something you've always done?
29:20Yeah I've been writing poetry since 18
29:21Yeah
29:22Yeah
29:23And I think you're going to do one for us?
29:26Maybe?
29:27Yeah I'd love to read one
29:28Have you got the book with you?
29:29Actually your mum is here
29:30And she's here
29:31She's here in her two piece bikini
29:33Ready to read?
29:34I wanted to set up though
29:35Ready to pee on somebody
29:36Well you've got the book there
29:37Oh you've got the book there
29:38What this
29:39Why I wrote it
29:40And why I put it out now
29:41Seems to me belief is in short supply
29:46Look around
29:47You look around
29:48Not much to believe in
29:50Or reasons to believe
29:52And
29:53That's
29:54Not going to work
29:55Because if doubt wins
29:56We're all going to lose
29:57Alright?
29:58So this is me looking for belief
29:59Because I found my own self getting cynical
30:01I found my own self objectifying people
30:03And kind of thinking
30:04I guess that's just the way it is
30:06First that scared me
30:07Secondly thankfully it pissed me off
30:09And I said no no no no no
30:10I promise I'd never become a cynic
30:12That's an early death
30:13If you do that
30:14So I wrote this to dive into my own belief
30:17And I've also found a lot of people along the way going
30:19They feel kind of the same way
30:20They're looking for belief
30:21So poems and prayers
30:22Instead of looking to reality
30:23And the evidence for belief
30:24Let's look at our dreams
30:26And our aspirations
30:27And see if we can bring those back down to earth
30:29And that's why I wrote this book
30:30Um
30:31There's a bunch in there
30:32Why don't I read one that's kind of funny
30:33Okay
30:34Alright
30:35And not that long
30:36How about that
30:37Alright it's called More Time
30:38I think it was about 2am
30:40The band played the last tune
30:42And I said amen
30:43Went to pay my tab over at the bar
30:45When the main event started tuning their guitar
30:48So I ordered myself another bottle of wine
30:51God I love it when I got more time
30:53Thought it was the year 2010
30:56Not a worrying sight in the fast lane again
30:59Signed all my checks one year tardy
31:02Cause it was 09
31:03And I hadn't left the party
31:05So happy my balance wasn't in the red
31:07God I love it when I'm early instead
31:10Met a woman I liked
31:11And she became my friend
31:13We turned into lovers
31:14And thought we'd make it until the end
31:16But as soon as we lined up hand in hand in the queue
31:19My eyes started turning a lighter shade of blue
31:23Well sometimes love just loses its shine
31:26And sometimes leaving early
31:28Just gives you more time
31:30Shut up
31:31Very good
31:32Thank you
31:33Very good
31:34Thank you
31:35Very good
31:36Thank you
31:37Thank you
31:40Meanwhile in another part of the forest
31:42James Norton brings us a new epic historical drama
31:46House of Guinness on Netflix now
31:49And here's a taste delicious
31:51The death of your father has served to poke a stick in a hornet's nest
32:00A gift from Mr. Guinness
32:03From a representative of the Dublin poor
32:07Children Sir Benjamin leaves behind are weak and divided
32:11Now is the time to use that weakness
32:14Freedom
32:17You think there'll be trouble today?
32:19The man's name is Guinness
32:24Of course there'll be fucking trouble
32:26And here's the thing, obviously the Guinness family who are kind of fighting for control of the brewery, they're real. Who do you play?
32:41And are you kind of an actual historical figure?
32:42So I'm not I'm made up the story is a kind of the father Benjamin Guinness is all true. He died in the early 1860s and he left his power vacuum
32:48It's the kind of big dynasty show the four children then take over the brewery
32:50I play there fixer caretaker kind of the four he runs the show, he's the boss
32:54He's called Sean Rafferty and he's a bishop
32:56Now he's a bit of a man
32:57But I see the Guinness family who are kind of fighting for control of the brewery
32:59They're real
33:00Who do you play?
33:01And are you kind of an actual historical figure?
33:02So I'm not I'm made up the the story is kind of the the father Benjamin Guinness is all true
33:05He died in the early 1860s and he left this power vacu ments the kind of big dynasty show the four children then take over the brewery
33:11I play there, fixer caretaker kind of the foot he runs the show he's the boss
33:16He's called Sean Rafferty, and he's a he's a badass. Yeah, he really is a badass
33:20Yeah, and it's by the same guy who wrote Peaky Blinders, right? It's Stephen Knight. Yeah, and he is
33:26Yeah, yeah, he's firing on all cylinders. He's he's in his element. You can tell he had a lot of fun making it
33:33Yeah, it's a really it's a romp, you know, it's a it's an amazing period of history
33:37It's when this this brand Guinness became this, you know, the biggest
33:40I didn't realize how famous Guinness was in the 1860s. Yeah, it was global already
33:45Well, it was just this is the story is the kind of the moment it exploded into North America
33:50And on the kind of coattails of the Industrial Revolution and but it's sort of it's smoky and sexy and it's irreverent
33:56And you know, it's it's we have many names the crown with beer
34:01Session it's been called
34:05Session I mean there's many people have coined it, but yeah, it's it's a lot of fun. It's definitely a fun fun romp
34:09And when I watch something like this and you know, you're in it and you're doing a really good Dublin accent
34:13Thank you when you said yes to it did you just go think I'm sure I can do that accent
34:18Or did you know you could do a Dublin accent? No, I mean I was terrified
34:22You know the Irish are a very well, you know, they're very proud people, right?
34:26Yeah, they'll tell you they will tell
34:28I sat on this couch with Jamie Dornan and he told us he got
34:36Crucified by a journalist for his Irish accent and he's Irish
34:40I was in that movie
34:41You were in that movie?
34:42And we got destroyed
34:44Yeah, but he's Irish, I mean I know he's but he's from Belfast
34:48And they told him his Irish accent was shit, so it was like
34:51I don't know what I don't know it was anyway, but no I listen I the accent the accent was terrifying and I worked really hard at it because
34:58You know, we've all we all know actors who didn't get it right and they do get held to account
35:02And did you have any kind of like were you given shortcuts into it? Yes, I did
35:07I had an amazing dialect coach called Paul Mousselides who basically
35:11Yeah, okay, he gave me um, I don't know if you've ever done this for an accent
35:15But he gave me kind of the vowels broken down into eight sounds and then these little poems actually funnily enough
35:20I could follow I could follow with one of the poems, but um
35:23They they were they were kind of ridiculous and I would listen to them and look kind of crazy walking around
35:27Can you remember any of them? I remember? Um, uh, like the sound I mean
35:32I'm gonna butcher and the Irish people are gonna come. No, they're not they are
35:37No, I'm not say it was a year and a half ago in my defense
35:39It said like the sound like I'm wine light
35:42Fine Ireland was it was something like um
35:45The prime height for umpours in Ireland is five foot nine
35:49I'm smiling now because of the fine white wine. I'm drinking it makes me feel like I'm a lion flying over a toy
35:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
35:59Still got it
36:01That's one of
36:03You've been known as an actor you like it's it's a very scientific you break the accent down into these times. Have you ever done an accent Matthew?
36:10Yes, yeah, Tim Monick is what I worked with. He's done the same things
36:15Yeah, you give the little limericks and you just find the
36:19Actually the rhyme and then the vowel sounds along the way and you start it sort of seeps in and uh, James
36:25uh, Norton the this is a you know, it's a big action
36:29Series big action role for you and you know, and we've we've had fighting we've had fires. You bring us explosions
36:37Now have you ever had to do walking away from an explosion before so please we can get to talk about yeah, so we have no
36:45You you have I know you have because there is a song so we were shooting this scene
36:49Um in in liverpool and and my i'm sean rafferty my my role was made very easy because all I had to do was sort of strut and smoke
36:56Cigarettes and look kind of cool
36:57And so within one of these scenes
36:59I was walking away from an explosion and my business partner and my dear dear best friend
37:02She she texts me in the middle of this this scene. She said have you seen cool guys?
37:07Don't look back at explosions the lonely island guys have you seen it?
37:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, which you were it's a song and he's cut together
37:13It's so good. It's cut together all the actors and actresses over the over the time in hollywood
37:18Who have walked away from an explosion and not turned back can't turn back you can't turn back, but you are my inspiration
37:23Oh, yeah, this is this is what actually in the series. This is uh sean rafferty walking away from an explosion
37:29I'm not afraid of a bit of progress
37:34Wait for it. Oh, there you go, but then I do a look back. Do I not know you don't
37:38No, yeah, it's so cool. So the rules bernie are you don't look back. That's a rule. You don't look back
37:44Yeah, and I suppose the other thing would be you wouldn't look sort of pleased with yourself for walking away from it
37:48Oh, no, don't don't don't back don't that don't please don't don't don't don't just stone-cold straight faces don't go straight faces
37:55This is what I do kind of thing, but by the way you're a producer make it happen. Yeah, I wasn't a producer
38:03This is uh, this is a slightly longer day. This is behind the scenes of
38:08Sean rafferty walking away from the explosion. Oh, so here he goes
38:12So there's the explosion not looking back. Oh, he looked back
38:17At least he hasn't looked pleased with himself at all
38:30All right, it's time for music the seven-time brit award-winning grammy-nominated artist first set the world of light with her debut album
38:37By 21st century blues here performing her newly released single. Where is my husband? It's ray
38:44I would like a diamond ring on my wedding finger. I would like a big and shiny diamond
38:56I could wave around and talk and talk about it
38:58And when the day is you forgive me god that I could ever doubt it till death I do I do I
39:03Why this man is testing me oh

44:07We pray together
44:08We talk about life together
44:09That's my rock
44:10Pun and no pun intended
44:14You know I sang your song today on the radio
44:16You did?
44:17Yeah
44:18What do you mean?
44:19Greg James I sang it
44:20Like it was a challenge to me
44:21Like the rap portion
44:22Because you know there's like a
44:23Like a rhythm to it
44:25Were you saying I would like a ring?
44:27Yes
44:28It was crazy
44:29No I butchered it
44:30But it was terrible
44:31It was terrible
44:32It was terrible
44:33I'll tell her it was terrible
44:34But I did
44:35So congratulations on everything
44:37Oh my gosh
44:38I would love to get that footage
44:39Please
44:40It's one of those life achievements
44:43That is the new single
44:45And it's going to be on the new album
44:47Yes
44:48Now when in the new album coming out?
44:50So you can pre-order it
44:52Great
44:53Pre-order it but it's just not done at all
44:54Like at all
44:55I'm an independent artist right
44:59You've got to get ahead of these things
45:01OK
45:02So we put it out there
45:03I've kind of given myself a rough deadline
45:04I would like to say the first third of next year
45:07Definitely the first half of next year
45:09OK
45:11So I
45:12OK
45:13This is not what I thought
45:14Sorry
45:15I thought it was kind of like
45:16Done you were just doing a little polishing
45:18Oh no
45:19No
45:20Yeah, maybe add some
45:21Add some horns to that
45:22No
45:23Not at all
45:24OK
45:25So are you writing it right now?
45:26I am, yeah
45:27So it's a beautiful process
45:29But it does take time
45:30And I
45:31Yeah
45:32Yeah
45:33I handed in where is my husband eight days before it come out
45:37Do you know what I mean?
45:38So I'm combing away at it
45:39Chipping away
45:40No, this could be better
45:41We should add this
45:42Yeah
45:43When you're writing do you sleep?
45:44Or are you just always churning with it?
45:46No, you need rest
45:47Being tired in the studio is the worst
45:49Yeah
45:50Yeah, you need to be on
45:51You need to be present
45:52I think it's kind of like
45:53I imagine in your guys crafts
45:55You know when your heart starts beating
45:57And you just feel like
45:58This adrenaline goes
45:59And you're like
46:00I'm where I need to be right now
46:01I need to chase this feeling
46:02It's that feeling, you know
46:03Yeah
46:04Being tired in the studio
46:05Your songs are gonna suck
46:06But now
46:07In terms of finishing the album
46:09Tell me this
46:10Does the album at least have a name?
46:12Erm
46:13Not really
46:14Kind of
46:15Kind of
46:16Kind of
46:17What is it kind of called?
46:19Erm
46:21Not that I'd answer like crazy
46:24Kind of is the title right
46:25Kind of is the title right
46:26Kind of is the title right now
46:27Oh nice
46:28Yeah
46:29Kind of
46:30Yeah
46:31So Matthew McConaughey says it
46:32Yeah, I need one of them
46:33You know they do quotes
46:34Of like, you know
46:35It's just like Matthew McConaughey
46:36Kind of
46:37Yeah
46:38But look
46:39The one thing we do know
46:41Is you are going on tour
46:43Yes
