00:00you know in this case the thing that was interesting is not so much how the money
00:07got there but who was doing it back down with the major shock at a catholic parish in california
00:13one of the ten commandments is thou shalt not steal a lesson the archdiocese says was
00:19apparently ignored they stole more than three million dollars and reportedly used the money
00:27for lavish trips to las vegas
00:29we lost sleep i mean it was so unbelievable to us look at what the priest did they do not always
00:39tell the truth they do not always do the right thing where does this go like how many people
00:45are involved in this is it one person or is this a criminal enterprise this is like the movie sister
00:52act in real life it's begging to be made into a musical you can just see them now rosary beads
00:57in one hand full house in the other right
00:59joyful joyful we adore thee god of glory lord above our sun full like flowers before thee
01:26free andまり wonderfully only to the sun the music numbers you will hear are inspired by stories we've been told
01:43nothing said should be interpreted as facts were saying only god knows
01:55We all got duped.
02:25We had bought a house in Torrance.
02:47As we had our first child, the inevitable conversation from other people with kids was,
02:53where are you going to put your children?
02:56My wife grew up and had a wonderful connection with her church and her school.
03:00St. James has been here for over 100 years.
03:03It just made a lot of sense for us.
03:07The school goes kindergarten through eighth grade.
03:10It's very well known, very well respected.
03:13And as a young parent, this history, this lineage, this reverence people have for the
03:17church is something we wanted to be part of.
03:21We wanted discipline and structure.
03:24We wanted that moral base of right from wrong.
03:29Don't cheat.
03:30Don't steal.
03:31Don't lie.
03:32I was coaching soccer and coaching the football, basketball, golf teams.
03:36He was PTA president for how many years?
03:38For a lot of years.
03:40The school could call on us and we would do it.
03:44You know, it takes a village and that was the village we chose.
03:50So when you go to St. James school, as opposed to going to public school, there are tuitions.
03:54In addition to tuition, there's all sorts of different fundraisers for various needs at
03:58the school.
04:03Parents would sign a contract to support to a certain dollar volume.
04:07We had the big red raffle.
04:09We had the jog-a-thon.
04:11I liked the gift wrap.
04:13I'm a shopper.
04:15Father Jim was a priest who was also a very good golfer.
04:18And so obviously we came up with a golf tournament.
04:23When we would come back to the school, we have a poker tournament.
04:27We call it Father Jim's Big Saloon.
04:32And the biggest fundraiser of all was the Harvest Festival.
04:35And this was more or less a weekend-long carnival with rides, food booths, a beer and wine garden.
04:41That was a lot of fun.
04:43You were happy to do it and you felt good about doing it because you believed that what you
04:47did was going to benefit the school and the community.
04:53In terms of the money, we kept raising it.
04:55In the first couple of years, you're like, yeah, it takes a while to raise money to see
04:59the end result.
05:02But then you hear the teachers complaining they haven't had a raise in years.
05:06You see the books the kids are looking at, like, we're not getting new books.
05:11Going to school at St. James, I wouldn't say it was fancy at all, kind of homey, I guess,
05:15like, you know, not extravagant at all.
05:17Some of the books were very beat up, very old.
05:20The parents wanted a covered awning over the benches where the kids would eat their lunch.
05:26First days of summer, it's like 90 degrees, we're just super hot.
05:30The response was, it was too expensive.
05:33Things that were important to the families weren't addressed.
05:39They were just ignored.
05:45We're being told, we need more money, we don't have enough.
05:50And tuition's going up each year.
05:52When I could see the money coming in, where's this money going?
06:01Miss Mary Mack, all dressed in black, with silver buttons all down her back.
06:11Now here's a tale that you should hear, about some cash that disappeared.
06:19The story begins at St. James, a devout Catholic school.
06:26A salty place, full of grace, leaders teach God's rules.
06:30Learning to read and to write and obey God's word is our life's work.
06:37So of course, we listen to what they say.
06:41Our parents pay tuition, they value the mission.
06:45Nutrition isn't apples, it's moral condition.
06:50One, two!
06:53That's why they pay the yearly fee, so we can stay pure and holy.
07:05If the conditions of the classroom are always rough, while our parents raise money.
07:09And it's never enough, with no field trips, no actions that require money.
07:13Doesn't that story smell a little funny?
07:15Where's that money if we don't get summy?
07:18Who does this thief think we are, big dummies?
07:20That's right, you know it's getting real.
07:22Just wait till you hear the blasphemous.
07:23Was it a nun, a sinful dad?
07:28A mom who's mad, or a priest gone bad?
07:32We're talking big, some stolen, millions of dollars.
07:35Belonged to the school, we could've been ballers.
07:38Could've had laptops, slagged out, busts.
07:40And so we got swindled by someone devious.
07:43Everyone's a suspect in our minds.
07:45Hail Mary time, let's figure out who committed this crime.
07:49Divine intuition gives us a new mission.
07:55Let's go!
08:02Do you remember the priest and nuns from your father?
08:08Yeah, so we had Father John, and then Father Jim was like the main one.
08:14Huge Notre Dame fan.
08:15The nuns, I had three years with Sister Lana, she was an English teacher.
08:20She was very particular about like the rules and like structure.
08:23Everyone was very disciplined, we'll use that word.
08:27Sister Lana was the eighth grade teacher and also the vice principal of the school.
08:33She wasn't very friendly, I'll just leave it at that.
08:39Oh, she's the worst teacher on campus.
08:41She just would smile to the parents and be mean to the kids.
08:46And then there's Sister Mary Margaret.
08:52Sister Mary Margaret was the principal.
08:59Boy, how do you describe Sister Mary Margaret?
09:05She seemed like she could be a tough grandma.
09:08Hardy, not super tall, nothing fancy about her, no makeup of course.
09:14Little bit of that bulldog kind of mentality.
09:18But she really cared.
09:20Sister Mary Margaret, I'll tell you point blank, she's probably one of the best bosses I ever had.
09:28A mentor, she's a friend.
09:30If we were having something going on in our personal life, we could go to her and ask for some guidance.
09:34She knew the families inside and out, and she was very giving.
09:39She's a nun, and she's taken vows of chastity and poverty.
09:44She doesn't get a salary, they get a stipend.
09:47They give you housing, transportation, and food.
09:51And she did a lot of real work.
09:55But it's not easy because you're dealing with a few hundred kids.
10:00And every kid's different.
10:02And every parent's got a demand for their kids to be the best student or the smartest athlete.
10:07You're dealing with the staff.
10:09You're dealing with the budget.
10:11You're answering to the archdiocese.
10:14You're answering to the teachers that need better support in the classrooms or more help.
10:19In 2018, we were hearing rumors she was going to retire.
10:25I would always call her and go visit with her in the office because I wanted to see her.
10:32I was very fond of her.
10:33Sister Mary Margaret, why are you retiring?
10:35And she blamed it on the parents.
10:37You know, the new parents and their kids are entitled and I just can't deal with them.
10:41And they're just not doing anything they're supposed to do.
10:43And it's just time.
10:4730 years of
10:50Good morning, Sister Mary Margaret
10:53What's so good about it?
10:56Always had to be governed by good
11:01Strict to the children who don't act as they should
11:06You know, these parents complain
11:11Being in charge of this school makes me grey
11:18It's been sacrifice and strife
11:22And I just want more from this life
11:26When
11:28When
11:29When do I get mine?
11:32When does she get hers?
11:35I think that
11:37Now
11:39Now
11:40It's my time
11:44To hang on my veil
11:46And bail
11:54There was never anything that was off until
11:58Until Sister Mary Margaret
12:01Was retiring
12:03Each of us at St. James School
12:06Follow the call of Jesus
12:08As we continue his work in the world today
12:11My prayer is that
12:13The school will carry on the rich traditions
12:16Of faith
12:17Academic excellence
12:19And service
12:20That's when everything hit the fan
12:27That's when everything hit the fan
12:31There was a check
12:40That
12:44The secretary at the school
12:46Needed to get for another family member
12:48This happens quite often
12:51Family comes
12:52They're going to go there
12:53And then something changes
12:54But they had already gone through
12:55The whole process of being accepted
12:56And the next step after being accepted
12:58Is you give them a check
12:59You give them your deposit
13:00Well, they backed out
13:02They asked for the check back
13:04The secretary got the check
13:07The account number on the back of the check
13:09Was not an account number for the school
13:12Then the parents go back
13:15And they start pulling their canceled checks
13:17And you're turning them over
13:18And they didn't match
13:19Account numbers didn't match
13:21And some had stamps
13:22Said St. James School
13:24And then some had handwritten St. James School
13:27And then sometimes it just said SJS
13:30What am I looking at?
13:35Clearly, there's bigger things at play here
13:37My name is Tyler Hatcher
13:47I'm the Special Agent in Charge
13:48Of IRS Criminal Investigation
13:49In Los Angeles
13:50We track the money
13:53We're really good at figuring out
13:55How did the money get generated?
13:57What happened to it?
13:58Where did it go?
13:59What did it pay for?
13:59Who touched it?
14:00Who owns it?
14:01All those types of things
14:02If you're put in a position of trust
14:04When it comes to money
14:05And you break that trust
14:06We will find you
14:07And we will aggressively investigate you
14:11The Archdiocese of Los Angeles
14:14Their policy is they do an audit
14:15At the end of a principal's term
14:17Whether that be one year
14:19Or two years
14:19Or ten years
14:20Or fifty years
14:21Doesn't matter
14:21And Mary Margaret Cooper
14:23Made her intentions known
14:24That she wanted to retire
14:25So of course that sparked in the audit
14:27Well, the audit came out clean
14:30No money missing
14:32Everything was where it was supposed to be
14:33But something was wrong
14:36Then you started hearing these rumors
14:41About Sister Lana
14:42When we had like our big red raffle
14:49For the Harvest Festival
14:50There was a lot of cash that we put through there
14:53And more times than not
14:55Sister Lana's name would get pulled
14:57I remember one of the years
15:02Sister Lana won
15:03And it was like her
15:03Second or third time winning
15:05But it's so funny to me
15:06Like, because I was standing next to her
15:07And she won
15:08And she would do this face
15:09Where she's like
15:09Almost like the Home Alone face
15:10Like, oh my god
15:12You would hear she took this person to dinner
15:16Or that person to dinner
15:18Or bought this great gift for this person
15:21Sister Lana Chang would tell other families
15:26She was going on cruises
15:27She said Hawaii, swimming with the dolphins
15:35Mexico, Palm Springs, Las Vegas
15:40She'd say, you know
15:41We went to Vegas and we had a great time
15:43So my wife's family
15:44They saw her in Vegas multiple times in the summer
15:46When I was in high school
15:48I went to Pechanga Casino down here
15:49And she was playing slots
15:51It was tough to hear that she was doing all that
15:57As we were giving to her
16:00Giving to our kids
16:01Sacrificing
16:02Constantly at the school
16:04Volunteering
16:05Not going on vacations
16:07Like all of our friends were doing
16:09We couldn't afford it
16:10Remember, as a nun
16:13They don't get a salary
16:14They get a stipend
16:15The church is giving you just enough to survive
16:18What is a fun time for a nun in Vegas
16:21And who's paying for a cruise
16:23And then you'd hear it was
16:26Lana Chang's rich uncle
16:27Paid for these things
16:28And so you try to be like
16:29Hey, where's your uncle?
16:33Could she be stealing money
16:34From the school?
16:36Quiet
16:48There's always more vacations to be had
16:56And more luxurious things to acquire
17:01And as for my unsatiated tastes
17:06Well, I do like my things a little finer
17:10And yes, I like my clothes designer
17:16So sue me
17:17I fly first class
17:19Because it's roommate
17:21I've got bad habits
17:24Yes, I do
17:26Who cares about the truth?
17:28I bet you wanna do
17:30So tell me
17:31Why?
17:32Why?
17:32Why?
17:33Why?
17:33Why can't I get mine?
17:38Why?
17:40I think about it all the time
17:48You might have had suspicions about Sister Lana.
18:03But because she's a nun, because she's been entrusted by the church,
18:07and you've given her your children, you give her the benefit of the doubt.
18:14If the money's not there, we'll just go raise some more money,
18:17because my kid's happy. I want them to stay here.
18:19This is a nice community. I don't want to cause any problems.
18:23And you're young parents. You just go with it.
18:30And then one day I came home, just a normal day at work,
18:33and my wife said, we got a letter.
18:37So what I have here is a copy of the actual letter
18:39that was sent home from St. James Catholic Church on November 28, 2018.
18:45Dear St. James School families,
18:47It is with much sadness that I am informing the families of St. James School
18:50that an internal investigation has revealed that,
18:53over a period of years,
18:55Sister Mary Margaret Kruper has been involved
18:58in the personal use of a substantial amount of school funds.
19:01We all got duped.
19:15It wasn't Sister Lana.
19:19But Sister Mary Margaret,
19:20it just doesn't make sense.
19:24And where is the money?
19:25There's more to, like, I see the smoke.
19:28Like, this is smoke.
19:30And where there's smoke, there's fire.
19:35You know, it's hard to believe that this trusted leader,
19:38who had been at the helm for almost 30 years,
19:41could be stealing.
19:42And the parents were on kind of two sides of the fence.
19:48After the letter,
19:49they held a meeting at the church
19:51with someone from the archdiocese,
19:53San Monsignor Mike,
19:54explaining what had happened.
19:56It got very hotly contested.
19:58One side of the aisle was saying,
19:59we know what she did.
20:00This is wrong.
20:01We knew it all along.
20:02We had an intuition.
20:04Another side was,
20:05she's innocent.
20:06We know her.
20:07We trust her.
20:07We're vouching for.
20:09That wasn't the Sister Mary Margaret I knew
20:12for all those years.
20:14We didn't believe it.
20:16We thought,
20:17it's not really what it sounds like it is.
20:22What a feeling to be so betrayed.
20:26For all we know,
20:28Sister Mary was framed.
20:30It's clear she's involved,
20:32and she should be ashamed.
20:35A criminal, unimaginable,
20:37the principle,
20:38and a thief,
20:39all the same.
20:40But she swears her innocence
20:42must be an explanation.
20:44I say full condemnation.
20:47We believe her.
20:48Don't believe her.
20:49We believe her.
20:50Don't believe her.
20:51We believe her.
20:53But we don't.
20:54Bad habits have consequences.
20:58Guilty or not of her offenses.
21:07When Monsignor spoke at the church,
21:09it was very poorly constructed,
21:13not a lot of answers.
21:15The archdiocese didn't want to press charges.
21:19It would be taken care of internally.
21:21This is embarrassing for them,
21:23and so they were not super thrilled
21:24about bringing in a lot of help,
21:26making this very public.
21:28They did nothing.
21:29They literally didn't know what they were doing,
21:31and they didn't do anything,
21:33because I believe they didn't want anybody
21:34to hear about it.
21:35It was all, you can trust us,
21:37which is a bunch of BS.
21:38The church didn't want to investigate it,
21:45and that's what convinced me
21:47that sister had done it.
21:50That is not in line with
21:53what would be expected of a nun
21:56in my book or most people's book.
22:00This woman that we trusted,
22:01that we trusted our children with,
22:04we trusted our children with
22:05Sister Mary Margaret for 16 years.
22:07because she was our friend.
22:10She was our friend,
22:11and she used us,
22:16and it felt ugly.
22:21We knew Sister has to be punished
22:25for committing a crime
22:27because she preached that there's a consequence
22:29for your actions.
22:32You're supposed to be there for the good.
22:34You're supposed to be living out of poverty,
22:36and you shouldn't be worried about money.
22:39You know, the fact that she's a nun and did it
22:42shouldn't excuse what she did.
22:45Bad habits have consequences.
22:49Who will pay for your expenses?
22:53My God, I mean, she's a nun for Christ's sake.
22:59She's literally the opposite of someone who should take.
23:03But she's an elder.
23:05What if she's lost her mind?
23:07Well, whether she has or she hasn't,
23:09she should pay for her crimes.
23:11I say lock her up.
23:13Yeah!
23:13Throw away the key.
23:15Well, that's not fair.
23:17She deserves her dignity.
23:18Bad habits have consequences
23:23If you are guilty of your offenses
23:27No more lies and empty defenses
23:31Only justice served
23:34And your prayers of repentance
23:36We can't take the high road
23:41This time
23:43This sin and sister
23:49Needs to pay for her crime
23:52It pisses me off
24:01They didn't investigate it
24:03They weren't going to investigate it
24:04That's when we, the parents, all complained
24:07and went right to the Torrance Police Department
24:09Now there's an investigation
24:11It's on
24:12There's a lot of betrayal and feelings of anger
24:15Back down with some major shock
24:16at a Catholic parish in California
24:18A local nun accused of embezzling money
24:21from the St. James Catholic School of Torrance
24:23Administrators from the school
24:25didn't want to file charges against the nun
24:26Tonight, some parents tell us they're furious
24:29It's a crime
24:30We are dealing with the allegation
24:31of misappropriation of funds
24:33I'd like to know what they did with the money
24:34Where does this go?
24:35Like, how many people are involved in this?
24:37Is it one person?
24:38Or is this a criminal enterprise?
24:40Paper doesn't lie
24:41Surveillance doesn't lie
24:43And when you have casinos in Las Vegas
24:46filing reports saying
24:47Hey, there's winnings going on for a nun
24:49And someone else is with her
24:51That's going to raise some flags
24:53Without the parents
25:01This investigation never happens
25:03They prompted the church
25:06You need to report it
25:07We need to figure out what's going on
25:08And at that point
25:10The church starts working with
25:11Torrance Police Department
25:12They reach out to our friends over at the FBI
25:17The FBI looks at it and says
25:20Hey, this is a financial case
25:21We need some help on it
25:23So they called us
25:23And then it boils down to
25:26What can we actually prove?
25:30When we started our investigation
25:31The church at the time
25:33We're like
25:34Hey, this is out here
25:35But we're not going to help you, basically
25:36And so for us
25:41It took some steps
25:42Starting at 4 p.m. today
25:43The Torrance Police Department
25:44Beefed up their staffing
25:45Just in case
25:46Parents and families
25:47Wanted to come by
25:48And give them their own evidence
25:50If anyone had any
25:51Perhaps canceled checks
25:53Or any type of tuition payments
25:54That they feel were compromised
25:56In any way
25:56We're requesting that they come down
25:58And speak with our detectives
25:59And provide their information
26:00They had an open house
26:02We went into rooms
26:03They made copies
26:04They took hard copies of checks
26:05It's like a jigsaw puzzle
26:07With witness interviews
26:08Records review
26:09All of the financial analysis
26:11It always starts with
26:13How was the money made
26:14Or obtained in this case, right?
26:17And we learned that
26:18By virtue of her position of trust
26:21Mary Margaret Cooper
26:22Had access to bank accounts
26:24Her bank account that was set up
26:26Church knew about it
26:27Because that's where her stipend was
26:28She also had access
26:30To this dormant savings account
26:31That had been set up
26:32Years, if not decades
26:34Before we found out
26:35About the fraud
26:35Between the two of those
26:37Once money would get in there
26:39We call it skimming, right?
26:41When money comes in
26:41And you just kind of
26:42Take a little bit
26:43Here and there
26:43So she would take a check
26:45That was supposed to go
26:46Say for tuition
26:46And put that into the bank account
26:48That she controlled
26:50And at that point
26:53We start looking at lifestyle
26:55I think initially
26:58When we started looking
26:59Nothing jumped out
27:00She's a nut
27:01She swore to poverty
27:02But the financial records
27:03Were attacked
27:04The bank records
27:05Were all attacked
27:05From there
27:06It's pretty easy to see
27:07Right?
27:08Where's money going?
27:10We see trips to Vegas
27:12Trips to Reno
27:12Trips to Tahoe
27:13Thankfully for us
27:15We have really good relationships
27:16With a lot of casinos
27:17We have a name
27:17We run the name
27:18And all of these casino reports
27:20Pop up
27:20We know Mary Margaret Crouper
27:22Likes to gamble
27:23Then we can pull up
27:24Surveillance video
27:25And kind of see
27:26People coming and going
27:27And what their favorite game is
27:29And what their betting habits are
27:30And some of the other things
27:31What was her favorite game?
27:33Is she a slots lady?
27:37But most frequently
27:38We saw another nun
27:39Lana Chang
27:40Who was with her
27:41Now take a look at this
27:51This is Lana Chang
27:52A woman who also worked
27:53At the school
27:54And is also implicated
27:55In the fraud case
27:56At that point
27:58You start to hear
27:59That Sister Lana Chang
28:00Was put together
28:01With Sister Mary Margaret
28:02Like back in the 80s
28:03At a different school
28:04And then they were brought
28:05Over to St. James together
28:06And they've been here together
28:07For like 30 years
28:09And then you find out
28:10They live together
28:11And then they travel together
28:13You don't know if
28:15Their relationship's
28:16More than business
28:17And that's when
28:21That smoke
28:22Became a freaking
28:23Giant fire
28:23Bad habits have consequences
28:33Time to answer
28:36All our questions
28:38It was us
28:41Who took the do-re-mi
28:43We are under full suspicion
28:46Don't you see
28:47And now is the time
28:49To minimize our crime
28:51And if we just stick to our story
28:54We should be just fine
28:55Sure, it was too easy
28:58To skim from the top
28:59But don't go looking for
29:02The moolive in Vegas
29:04In the slime
29:04No, it's a cumbling addiction
29:06Yes, addiction is to blame
29:08But have compassion
29:10We're just victims
29:11Of this sinful game
29:13Bad habits have consequences
29:16If you are guilty
29:18Of your offenses
29:20No more lies
29:23And empty defenses
29:25Only justice served
29:27And your prayers of
29:28Repentance
29:30We just wanna travel
29:34The world
29:37Live freely and have fun
29:43After a lifetime
29:44Of being the perfect nun
29:47A person takes a second
29:49But a lifetime of service
29:52Once sacred
29:53Now forsaken
29:55They're co-conspirators
30:03And Sister Mary Margaret
30:05Was the mastermind
30:06She was the rich uncle
30:08Looking back on it
30:16A parent's not necessarily
30:18Gonna believe a kid
30:19At those ages
30:19But Sister Mary Margaret
30:21We used to call her
30:21Sister Mary Money
30:22It seemed like she always
30:24Cared about the money
30:24Was very pushy
30:25About fundraisers
30:26Different parents
30:28Have different stories
30:29Their kids were asked
30:31By Sister to go get
30:32Something out of
30:33The back seat of her car
30:34And go home
30:34And tell mom
30:35Hey, you know
30:35Sister's got rolls
30:36Of cash under her seat
30:38It was never questioned
30:40It was Sister Mary Margaret
30:41She could be
30:43Like this super dictator
30:45Person
30:46Punishment wise
30:47She had a pretty short fuse
30:49And I remember
30:51You'd have to walk the line
30:52Recessed lunch
30:53Instead of like
30:53Doing physical activity
30:54Which you're probably
30:55Like legally supposed to do
30:56You'd have to like
30:57Walk the line
30:58In front of everyone
30:58Like a big square
30:59Around the four square thing
31:00It was basically
31:01Public humiliation
31:02All the time
31:04When I was
31:09I think it was fourth grade
31:10Sister Mary Margaret
31:11Picked me up
31:12And threw me
31:12Against the wall
31:13Sister Mary Margaret
31:16Was running the show
31:18She had her finger
31:19On the pulse
31:20Of pretty much
31:20Everything going on
31:21At the school
31:21They did not do this alone
31:26Because it was too big
31:28Many pastors went through
31:31Many teachers
31:32A lot of office staff
31:35Sister Mary Margaret
31:37Reports to a lot
31:38Of different people
31:39And nobody caught this
31:41For 20, 30 years
31:41Nobody
31:43The church wanted
31:47This to be quiet
31:48Handled internally
31:49From the start
31:50I believe
31:52She ran a syndicate
31:53And it's very hard
31:56To imagine
31:57A nun
31:57Can run
31:58A syndicate
31:59For 20 or 30 years
32:00Without help
32:01But when the lights
32:03Came on
32:04The cockroaches
32:05Ran to the corners
32:05We always hate
32:16To judge people
32:17By their worst day
32:17Right
32:18This is not that
32:19Like she had a series
32:20Of bad days
32:21Like perpetrating
32:22This fraud
32:22For a long time
32:24Is a culmination
32:25Of a lot of bad days
32:26And a lot of poor judgment
32:27And in this case
32:29We want to know
32:30How did she cover it up
32:31For retirement
32:36Every time I would go
32:37Visit Sister Mary Margaret
32:38She would be at her desk
32:40And I would sit
32:41On the other side
32:41And we would chat
32:42When this was going on
32:43And I didn't know
32:44What was going on
32:45Sister Mary Margaret
32:46Started acting really
32:48Cagey
32:49She got up
32:52And took me around
32:53And brought a chair over
32:54And turned us like this
32:55So I wasn't facing her desk
32:57My gut was
32:59There was something
33:00Going on her desk
33:01That she did not
33:01Want me to see
33:02She knew the audit
33:05Was coming up
33:06She got together
33:08With a couple of folks
33:09In the office
33:09And started altering documents
33:11She was shredding records
33:15That would definitively show
33:16That she's been
33:18Embezzling money for years
33:19And when you have somebody
33:21That's destroying evidence
33:22That shows us
33:23What their mentality was
33:25It shows your willfulness
33:26You know we call that willfulness
33:27You knew what you were doing
33:29Was wrong
33:29So much so that you took
33:30Extra steps to cover it up
33:31To cover it up
33:31But bank records don't lie
33:34And for parents
33:36It's our hard-earned money
33:38When the investigation started
33:44The church came out
33:45Saying we believe
33:47They took somewhere
33:48In the $70,000 to $80,000 range
33:50Debbie spent three days
33:55At the local bank
33:56Going over every check
33:58That we wrote
33:58In the last seven years
34:00Because that's as far back
34:01As the bank had records
34:02And all of our checks
34:04That we intended
34:04For the school
34:05Were routed to
34:07Sister Mary Margaret
34:08She funneled
34:09About $90,000 of ours
34:11At least
34:11Over the 16 years
34:13Over 16 years
34:14There was $800,000
34:18Minimum that we proved
34:20Was missing
34:20But it's very difficult
34:22For us to track cash
34:24The fundraisers
34:27Would raise
34:28Tens of thousands
34:29Of dollars
34:30You know
34:31We were bringing in
34:32Anywhere between
34:33$6,000 on a bad year
34:34To about $12,000
34:36For a golf tournament
34:37Big Jim Saloon
34:39Was $4,000 or $5,000
34:40For one night
34:41The gift wrap
34:43Fundraiser
34:43Would bring in
34:44About $25,000 or $35,000
34:46A year
34:46But the Harvest Festival
34:49Was the big money
34:50It was bringing in
34:51About $150,000
34:53For a weekend
34:54I mean that's profit
34:55A lot of us parents
34:58Got together
34:59And each year
35:01Each year
35:02There was about
35:02$350,000 to $400,000
35:04In cash
35:05Going through that school
35:06That nobody's ever seen
35:08So by our own account
35:10If you go back
35:11To when the bank
35:12Account started
35:13That number's
35:14About $2.4 million
35:15Our evidence
35:22Was very, very clear
35:23We knew what was going on
35:25We pushed that story
35:26Out to the public
35:27And once the gig
35:28Was up
35:29She admitted to it
35:31Well a Torrance
35:32None accused
35:33Of gambling
35:34With school funds
35:35Just pleaded guilty
35:36In court
35:37According to the plea
35:38Agreement
35:39Kruper embezzled money
35:40From St. James
35:41For a period of 10 years
35:42Kruper also is accused
35:44Of directing St. James
35:45Employees
35:45To alter and destroy
35:47Financial records
35:48During a school audit
35:49She did it
35:51And she did it to us
35:53But she still needed
35:55To be held accountable
35:56For the actions
35:57That she took
35:58She pled guilty
36:02And when you have
36:03A plea on the table
36:04We want those members
36:05Of the school
36:06And the parents
36:06To have some closure
36:07But sentencing
36:09Is always left up
36:10To the federal judge
36:11And usually
36:12When we see people
36:13In a position of trust
36:14They fight it
36:15Till the end
36:15They feel this sense
36:17Of being entitled
36:18To the actions
36:18That they took
36:19She said she had
36:21A gambling addiction
36:22And spent it
36:24Gambling and was in debt
36:26Our attorneys say
36:28A 79 year old
36:29Has been suffering
36:29From mental illness
36:30To support a gambling habit
36:32She stole the money
36:33From a torn school
36:34To feed a gambling habit
36:36We read a statement
36:38To the court
36:39Please your honor
36:41Validate us
36:42By enforcing
36:43The maximum sentence
36:44As prescribed by the law
36:45Taking money
36:46From other people
36:47Is wrong
36:48I know the judges
36:51Were catholic
36:51Sister Mary Margaret's
36:53Attorney was a big catholic
36:54And what about
36:56Sister Lana
36:56She had to know everything
36:58Everything
36:59Sister Mary Margaret did
37:00They were lockstep
37:01What do we think
37:03Is going to happen
37:04Dun dun dun
37:06In the federal system
37:17You have guidelines
37:18And guidelines
37:18And guidelines are set
37:19Like in this case
37:19By the amount of money
37:20That's stolen
37:21Initially
37:23The sentencing guidelines
37:25Was like three years
37:26And some change
37:27Three years
37:28And some change
37:30Well
37:31The judge was
37:32Was raised catholic
37:33He went to a catholic school
37:34He attributed
37:37Where he was
37:38As a federal judge
37:39To a nun
37:40And so the judge
37:41Ultimately decided
37:42To depart
37:42From the recommended sentence
37:44So Mary Margaret
37:48Was sentenced
37:48To a year and a day
37:49In jail
37:50One year and a day
37:52She didn't serve
37:58The full year
37:59She did a halfway house
38:00From what I understand
38:01After a few months
38:02In jail
38:03Is she in jail still
38:04Or no?
38:05No?
38:05What did she do?
38:06She got four months
38:08In jail
38:09She only got four months?
38:11That's comical
38:12The sister said
38:17She was going to be
38:17Sequestered
38:18I think was her term
38:19More or less
38:20You're locked down
38:21In your room
38:21You're grounded
38:22At a convent
38:23She's never been grounded
38:24I've heard stories
38:26Of her in and around town
38:27Going to parties
38:29Sister Alonda Chang
38:32Was never charged
38:33She's out of retirement
38:34Now
38:34At a school
38:35Never charged
38:40Their life just kept on going
38:46Because that's
38:47Just the way
38:49They wanted it to play out
38:54Are you still a Catholic?
38:56No
38:57We wanted to raise
39:01Good Catholics
39:01And my son will go to mass
39:04My daughters are not
39:07They don't like to discuss
39:10That time
39:11They're very embarrassed
39:12They're very angry
39:13They're still hurt
39:14When the boys heard
39:18What was going on
39:19They questioned
39:21A lot of things
39:23They lost all respect
39:26For the institution
39:28Of the Catholic Church
39:29The nuns are
39:32Trying to teach us
39:34To be these good people
39:35And live a life of God
39:36And do things the right way
39:37You would expect them
39:38To lead by example
39:39And they definitely didn't
39:42We lost a lot of friends
39:46Over this
39:47This was a very divisive event
39:49In the St. James community
39:51And we don't feel welcome
39:53There anymore
39:54As a matter of fact
39:56I went back there
39:57Right at the beginning of it
39:58And Monsignor Mike
40:00Absolutely scolded me
40:03And I left there in tears
40:05I know there's a lot less people
40:08At St. James after this
40:10I know the St. James community
40:12That we had with all those parents
40:14Is extremely fractured
40:15And will never be repaired
40:16Because if you can believe this
40:18Some people still think
40:18She's innocent
40:19At the end of the day
40:24I think the sentencing
40:25Doesn't pay enough tribute
40:26To I think the damage
40:28That was done
40:28We were not in a position
40:29To return funds
40:30Like in a normal
40:31You know investment scheme
40:33Or something like that
40:33Like when you spend money
40:34At casinos and on trips
40:36It's gone
40:36According to the investigators
40:39The money was
40:40Lost gambling
40:41Lost gambling
40:42My personal opinion
40:44Has always been
40:44That Sister Mary Margaret
40:45And Sister Lana
40:46Were taking it
40:47And stocking it away
40:48For their retirement
40:48And I feel like
40:50That money
40:51Is out there somewhere
40:52That money came
40:56From the parents
40:57To pay for their
40:58Children's education
40:59And we were always told
41:01If we had more money
41:02Our children would get
41:03An even better education
41:04Clearly that was a lie
41:06But you believe
41:09Because we have blind faith
41:10And when they say
41:11You lead a faithful life
41:12In the Catholic Church
41:13Maybe that's what they mean
41:14Blind faith
41:15You can trust us
41:17And where is she now?
41:26I am not sure
41:26Where Sister Mary Margaret is
41:28She actually still works
41:32With students in Los Angeles
41:33No she doesn't
41:35Our story ends where it began
41:45Our once blessed school
41:47Used to be a sunny place
41:49Where we learned God's rules
41:52Turns out there was
41:54A bigger lesson to be made
41:56Not every sin gets punishment
41:58So stop
41:59And listen to what we say
42:03Let's dismiss tradition
42:10Of blind submission
42:13I am not sure
42:14I am not sure
