00:00The two missing are Julian Buckwall, 23, and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Caroline Watsa.
00:18They seem to have vanished into thin air.
00:23Just went out for a nice picnic and never came back.
00:27No leads and no trace of them.
00:34A satanic note has been found by the parents urging them not to contact the police or harm
00:40or come to their children.
00:42No comment.
00:43No comment.
00:43To have a young couple with no criminal history go missing with links to a satanic cult,
01:01it was one out of the box.
01:03Our absolute ultimate goal is to find them as quickly as possible and safe.
01:08A satanic cult.
01:38They've been missing for two days.
01:41Julian Buckwall and Caroline Watsa, two teens, reported by the family, indicated they'd gone
01:46on a picnic.
01:50And that they'd gone missing from there.
01:52So we had to backtrack from that last location where they were seen and work out the sequence
01:57of events that followed from there on.
01:58Initially we didn't have any leads, but to whether they had come to harm was probably not at the
02:08forefront of our mind at the time.
02:09It was more that we thought that they had disappeared.
02:11We all jumped into the cars, attended both Caroline's house and Julian's house to speak to the parents.
02:21When we attended Caroline's place, we spoke to Caroline's mother, Jeanette, and Caroline's father, Chris,
02:27and they were beside themselves.
02:30They were beside themselves with fear and concern and they were looking for us for answers.
02:36The missing couple, they had very limited ways of communication.
02:39So no phones, no credit cards.
02:41In policing terminology, that's the bread and butter that we require to locate people who
02:47go missing or who don't want to be found.
02:54My name's David Woywood and I was a junior reporter at the time of this kidnapping case.
03:01We were waking up to new details every day on the radio, news bulletins at night.
03:06Look, they were wall-to-wall coverage with this story.
03:08This wasn't a normal missing persons case.
03:11It was getting more bizarre by the day.
03:17Again, heading to the oddity of this whole investigation, someone had taken the left shoe
03:21of every pair of shoes that was on the porch.
03:24This had really thrown another element into this case and for one, it was absolutely baffling
03:30police.
03:30They had no idea what was going on and it was certainly alarming the community as well.
03:35Not something I'd ever come across before, unless it was a one-legged bandit who needed
03:40that shoe.
03:41Caroline was quite a religious young girl, same with her family and Julian would have
03:53been as well, being part of the church.
03:56Julian had asked Caroline's parents for permission to take her on a picnic and I believe the church
04:01as well.
04:01The pastor told us of Julian wanting to marry Caroline as soon as she finished year 12 and
04:09that Caroline was hopeful to enter university.
04:12So that was where we may have started having some thoughts that perhaps he had convinced
04:17her to let's run away together.
04:18When we attended Julian's parents' place, we mainly dealt with Julian's mother, St. Glindy,
04:33and she probably seemed to me to have a little bit of knowledge about the situation than the
04:39Watson family.
04:41She was indicating all these places that we should search on the property.
04:44So the property in Grand Ridge Road was over 200 acres.
04:49It's a huge, huge area, huge grand area to cover.
04:51Hence the reason we got the police helicopter.
04:53This is incredibly rugged terrain.
04:59If you don't know it, it's very easy to get lost.
05:04You need some form of knowledge of that region to actually survive out there.
05:10We went very large, very loud with the media to try and get all the descriptions and the
05:14information out around the car and around Julian and around Caroline.
05:19Authorities are asking the public if they've seen a Nissan Gold four-wheel drive.
05:24Please contact the hotline below if you've seen this vehicle with these plates or if you
05:28have any information about the couple.
05:32I saw this same car leaving the gas station on Dover Avenue yesterday afternoon.
05:37I'm pretty sure this car was parked in front of our house early this morning.
05:41I hope that's helpful.
05:43We continued investigating those calls and spoke to the parties that had made the information
05:49reports.
05:50We had a lot of days there where we were following leads that were not correct.
05:56So as each day passed, it got worse.
06:00I guess you could say as an investigating team, our concerns grew higher.
06:06A satanic cult has kidnapped the two local teens.
06:10A letter with satanic symbols was found with a warning to keep away or harm will come to the
06:15hostages.
06:17So the mother of Julian, she found a note in a turpentine bottle on a gate in their property.
06:25It was a satanic type note.
06:27It had a, what they call an order of nine angles symbolism on it.
06:31It identified that they'd been taken against their will and not to report it to the police
06:35and that harm was going to come to them.
06:38This very quickly changed this case from a missing persons case to perhaps something
06:42far more sinister.
06:45Julian's mother was constantly wanting to know updates, but there was just something
06:49odd around her emotions compared to the Watson family's emotions.
06:53When we spoke with Carolyn's parents, they identified that they had received a note as well.
06:58It was of the same kind, with the same emblem.
07:00It was the note that was located on the Buckwall property.
07:05This note indicated and was directed to the father of Karen, Christopher Watson, telling
07:11him to mind his own business and do not contact the police.
07:15Tell everyone they are on holiday.
07:17Don't you dare talk to the f***ing cops again and you'll get your kids back.
07:22S*** us again and you will never see them again because we'll f*** the girl to death and
07:28burn her alive and the bloody boy will really enjoy to torture and sacrifice.
07:35This is your last warning.
07:42Behind the scenes, they were certainly preparing for the worst and police may not have been
07:47admitting it publicly, but they were certainly now treating this much more of a retrieval mission
07:53rather than a search and rescue.
07:54So come the 11th, they'd been missing for seven days, which was a long time.
08:04Again, each day added to the concern and most definitely added to the concern of the parents
08:09and we had nothing.
08:11We still had no evidence as to where they were, no clues, no further information.
08:15So we were a bit of a standstill.
08:25And then we received a call.
08:27It was riveting, a shocking moment.
08:30Sounds good.
08:30Thanks, Mel.
08:31Cheers.
08:31Good morning, Buckham Police.
08:44Very morning, speaking.
08:48So I got the call at about 10 past 7pm at night.
08:51I'd just finished tea.
08:53A farmer had located two missing people.
08:56One was a 22-year-old male and one was a 17-year-old female.
09:02I was told that they'd been missing for eight days from home
09:05and I was told that they were possibly abducted.
09:08When I first heard this story, I was sceptical.
09:18I was not convinced that the details given to me were adding up.
09:23Kidnapping is very rare in Buckham.
09:25I mean, I've been here for 22 years.
09:27I never had a kidnapping.
09:29But I think Australia is blessed in that way in relation to those serious crimes.
09:34So, in relation to where this case sits in my career, it's one of the strangest.
09:42We got information from the local policeman at Buckham
10:04that he'd been contacted by a local resident,
10:06that the two had come out of the bush
10:09and been taken to the Buckham police station.
10:13All right. I'll see you soon. Bye-bye.
10:21It was a number of hours for us to get down to the Buckham area.
10:25When we got there, I believe it was about 11.30 at night.
10:28As the lead investigator, I came up with a plan before we got there
10:31about who was to do what.
10:32So, what we needed to know at that time is who these kidnappers were.
10:38We then separated both Julian and Carolyn,
10:40put them both into interview rooms
10:41and we actually recorded their statements.
10:45My full name is Carolyn Louise Watson.
10:48I'm 17 years of age.
10:51I'm making the statement of my own free will.
10:52Julian picked me up at around 10 a.m. from my home address
10:57in his Nissan Patrol.
10:59We'd arranged a week prior to go on a picnic at a waterfall
11:02on his property at 1353 Grand Ridge Road, Valora.
11:09Julian was driving and I was in the front passenger seat.
11:12Julian then drove us to the paddock where the deer were.
11:16The car had barely started moving when I saw the deer move.
11:20Julian made a comment that it's as if someone was there
11:24that smoked the deer.
11:25We then drove down the hill a bit further.
11:29Julian saw a deer on the side of the path that had been skinned
11:32so he got out of the car and we left the car running.
11:38He said that he was going to check if anything was around the corner.
11:41Yeah.
11:50I tried looking up once but my head was pushed down.
12:08He then taped around my eyes and ears
12:10and wrapped the tape around behind my head under my ponytail.
12:13It felt like someone got into the passenger seat
12:20as the passenger seat moved.
12:23But I'm not too sure.
12:26The male got in the driver's seat and drove off.
12:29The male
12:39The male
12:42The male
12:57She was aware that she was in Julian's car
13:02because she didn't know where Julian was.
13:05We were driving on a gravel road for a while.
13:11I might have passed out during it.
13:15But it's very hot under the blanket.
13:27I heard him pick up a shovel and dig a hole.
13:32I didn't see any of this.
13:40She's bound, she's tired.
13:42What thoughts would have been going through her head?
13:44She thought she was going to be murdered or raped.
13:47She just didn't know what was going to happen to her.
13:53And the next thing she knows
13:54is that this person has come closer to her.
13:57And then started cutting her clothes off.
14:01She commenced to pray.
14:03And she prayed out loud.
14:14Some time passed.
14:15And the next thing she knew,
14:16she could hear Julian's voice.
14:18Very muffled, very quiet.
14:19And she said, Julian, is that you?
14:22And Julian said, is that you, Carolyn?
14:24And the next thing she knew,
14:28he was wriggling himself towards her
14:30as they both laid on the ground.
14:34Yes, they've just freed themselves.
14:37They've looked around.
14:38They appreciate they're in the middle of nowhere.
14:40They didn't know where the kidnappers were.
14:42So their intention at that time was to get out of there.
14:46They only got a sleeping bag
14:47and no clothes, no shoes.
14:50They had to find a way out.
14:54We were very excited
14:55that they'd been found alive.
14:57But they had the clearly obvious sunburn
14:59and blistering
15:00as a result of exposure to the sun.
15:03And you could feel the pain already
15:05just by how much that would have hurt.
15:06So by the next morning,
15:17we needed to get out to the scene
15:19where they stated
15:20that they'd been taken to
15:22and where their clothes had been cut off.
15:24So we needed them
15:26to assist us in finding that location.
15:30We needed to deal in evidence and facts.
15:34Mine is like a parachute.
15:35It doesn't work unless it's open.
15:37And that's how we went into this investigation.
15:42So police have taken Julian back out to this site
15:45and what they very quickly discovered
15:47was that there were a number of holes
15:50with buried evidence.
15:53Some of the things we located in these holes
15:55were pieces of clothing, ropes.
15:58But of significance was another note.
16:01Same as the two notes that we'd already recovered
16:03with the satanic coal overtone.
16:06Julian was very clear in his statement
16:08that he went back to the scene
16:10whilst they were in the bush
16:11to retrieve the clothes
16:12and put them into a backpack,
16:15which he then took
16:15and met up with Carolyn again.
16:17So he's somehow been able to find all the pieces,
16:20put them back together with safety pins.
16:23Police started asking that very obvious question.
16:26Why had this kidnapper then gone to the trouble
16:29of burying all of those items?
16:32It just wasn't adding up.
16:34The creek bed, if you dug a hole,
16:36it covered up pretty much quickly,
16:37so no-one would ever have been able to find
16:39that there was a hole there for that particular item.
16:41But Julian knew where it was
16:42and he pulled it out from there.
16:43And that is when this story
16:45has very quickly started to unravel.
16:49I was quite certain
16:50that Julian had something to do
16:53with this investigation
16:54and he'd become a suspect at this point.
16:57I went for a bit of a walk
17:16around the skirts of the crime scene.
17:23I noticed some reeds and waddles
17:26that were probably two or three metres high
17:29and they looked a bit damaged
17:30and a little bit odd
17:31from the way they were standing.
17:34Something was a bit off.
17:36I waded through the reeds and the waddles
17:39and I located a gold-coloured four-wheel drive
17:42secreted in the bush
17:43about five metres off the track.
17:47To find that car in the bush,
17:48that was just the smoking gun for us.
17:52When Julian went back to retrieve the clothes,
17:56he didn't see the car.
17:59It was found parked just 20 metres or so
18:02away from where those holes had been dug.
18:06Police started questioning almost immediately
18:08why was the car there?
18:12Apparently a kidnapper had taken these two.
18:15He had bound them and dumped them
18:17and then parked the car just 20 metres away.
18:20I mean, it wasn't adding up at the time.
18:21The whole timeline in this case was out of whack.
18:25It was pointed out to him
18:26that some of the inconsistencies of his statements
18:28and the things that we'd located at the scene
18:30indicated that he wasn't telling the truth.
18:33I thought, he's got a lot of questions to answer now.
18:38Detective Sergeant Rod Arthur and I
18:40pulled Carolyn aside
18:41and had a conversation with her.
18:43I specifically recall asking her
18:45whether Julian could have been involved
18:47further in the vending side of this incident
18:50and she thought it through
18:52and said that the person who drove Julian's car
18:55drove it exactly like Julian
18:57and I believe it was a manual car
18:59which manual vehicles all have
19:01different nuances of how you would drive it
19:03and that someone kept tapping her on the head
19:06from the driver's seat
19:07when she was behind the front passenger seat
19:09and she thought that that was
19:10someone being quite caring.
19:12So that rang alarm bells for her as well.
19:17What happened, Julian?
19:18Come forward and tell us the truth.
19:21And at one stage he said to me,
19:22can I have five minutes to think about it?
19:24I said, of course you can.
19:28He had a bit of think time
19:29and then eventually he said, yes, I did it.
19:33And then from a policing perspective
19:35we needed to get that secured
19:37on video and tape recording.
19:38Who drove the vehicle through here?
19:43I just wanted him.
19:45What do you mean you get you did?
19:47I did.
19:49And what was the purpose of that?
19:52I had it.
19:53And I'll put it to you,
19:54that was the purpose of concealing it from police.
19:56Would you agree with that?
19:57Yes.
19:58And it's the same car
19:59that you conveyed yourself and Caroline in.
20:02Yes.
20:04And I put to you at no stage
20:05that you were actually abducted
20:07by any persons?
20:08What would you say to that?
20:10You are correct.
20:12I then instructed Detective Condon
20:14to issue him with what we call
20:15a caution in rights.
20:16For American purposes
20:18that would be a Miranda.
20:19The whole incident of Caroline being kidnapped
20:22was staged by yourself.
20:24What would you say to that?
20:25You are correct.
20:26And what was the purpose,
20:27your purpose of that?
20:31I was still trying to understand
20:33why he'd gone to the lengths.
20:35He did.
20:37That shocked me.
20:38It shocked me that someone would do that
20:39to the person they say they love.
20:42I guess as an investigator,
20:44nothing surprises us,
20:45so we have to keep that open mind.
20:46But it was a long way to go.
20:47Once we were back at the police station,
20:56Julian was formally interviewed
20:58on tape as well,
20:59where he made further admissions
21:01to being involved in this incident.
21:07What is your full name?
21:10My full name is Julian Matthias Buckwell.
21:14All right, Julian,
21:14perhaps we can go back to the start
21:17of where all this began
21:18and you can tell us what's happened.
21:20Exactly.
21:22That you say?
21:24I told the Watsons
21:25that I'd take Caroline out on the picnic.
21:30Got out of the car,
21:32left her in the car,
21:34went down to the fence,
21:36pretended to check on something.
21:39I had a heap of clues there,
21:40pretended to be someone else.
21:44I grabbed her arm,
21:55brought her out of the car,
21:56shoved her on the ground.
21:58Then I wrapped tape around her head,
22:00made sure she stayed down
22:02and didn't say anything.
22:05Grabbed her and put her back in the car.
22:14I took Caroline out of the car
22:26and put her on the ground
22:27and then drove the car a bit further
22:31to hide it.
22:37Then I got out.
22:39Then I got my knife
22:39and I cut off her clothes
22:41and cut off my own clothes
22:42and then drew the clothes in the hole.
22:45Did she say anything?
22:48She said to stop.
22:49No, stop.
22:50Don't do this.
22:53She had her clothes cut off her.
22:54She heard holes being dug.
22:57The mental torture for her
22:58would have been horrific.
22:59I lay down two metres from Caroline
23:13and then I pretended to wake up.
23:15How long did you lay there for?
23:18Not long.
23:19Just a few seconds.
23:22She then hears a voice
23:23and it turned out to be Julian's voice.
23:26And he said,
23:26is that you, Caroline?
23:28She said,
23:30Julian, are you there?
23:31Is that you?
23:32And I replied with,
23:33yes,
23:33I think I can get myself free.
23:43You can understand
23:44that Caroline seeing Julian there,
23:46alive and safe,
23:48was quite a relief to her.
23:51I carefully cut Caroline loose
23:53and said,
23:53Caroline, let's get out of here.
23:54And we ran away.
24:06Did you write the letters?
24:08I wrote a terrible letter
24:09to Mr. Watson
24:10telling him to be someone else.
24:14What was the purpose
24:15of you writing that note?
24:16Can you tell me a little bit
24:17about your thinking?
24:19Guess I've been planning
24:20to kidnap Caroline
24:21and I was wanting
24:22to throw them off my child.
24:23How long had you been
24:26planning to kidnap her?
24:28Since I wrote the note.
24:31What was going through your head?
24:32What were you thinking?
24:34I don't know.
24:35I was probably very upset
24:36and I was wanting
24:37to spend more time with her.
24:39Did you take anything
24:39from the porch?
24:41Yes.
24:42I left shoe
24:42with every pair of shoes.
24:44Julian
24:45and whoever
24:46may have assisted him
24:47thought that this was
24:48the best way
24:49to stage
24:50this kidnapping
24:51and potentially
24:53throw the police
24:54off the scent
24:54which it did
24:56and muddy the waters
24:58and ultimately
25:00being found out
25:01for what it was
25:01and that is a lie.
25:08Apart from the course
25:09in the investigation
25:10we took out a search
25:11warning on both
25:12the Watson residents
25:13and the Buckwood residents.
25:14We're not in the business
25:15of stealing things, you know?
25:16Of course you're stealing.
25:18That's what you've been doing
25:19all the time.
25:20Sorry, I'm sorry.
25:21What happened?
25:22Of course you are.
25:22We needed to see
25:23what was on the computers.
25:25The evidence that we obtained
25:26indicated that
25:28this event had been planned
25:29probably a month or two
25:30before it actually was committed.
25:33We found a number
25:34of searches
25:35in relation to the location
25:37he was ultimately found.
25:39But we are taking that
25:40to be a legal person
25:42and then we went there.
25:43It's not illegal
25:44to have a computer
25:45you're still talking.
25:46But that's what we're going to do.
25:47Okay, we're going to take it.
25:48Yeah, I know.
25:50I'm more concerned
25:51there was a number
25:52of Google searches
25:53in relation to darker things.
26:03At night time
26:04it had dropped
26:05enough that
26:06they needed to sleep
26:07in the sleeping bag.
26:09Julian had said to Carolyn
26:11that they should
26:13consummate their relationship
26:14because in the eyes of God
26:15they'd be married.
26:18That they've gone through
26:18an ordeal together
26:19and that God
26:20wouldn't be angry at them
26:21if they did have
26:22a sexual relations.
26:24It was so cold
26:25we were trying to figure out
26:26what to do
26:27so I suggested
26:28let's get in the sleeping bag.
26:32She said
26:33let's try it.
26:34I was so worried
26:41we were going to die
26:42you know
26:42it was so cold
26:43and so wet
26:44that I thought
26:45we were going to die.
26:46So she hopped in
26:47and I said
26:48before we die
26:50can we get married?
26:55She said no.
26:56She said her parents
27:02wouldn't approve.
27:06How did you feel about that?
27:09I was disappointed.
27:13They had very
27:14specific beliefs
27:15around sex
27:16before marriage
27:17the sanctity of marriage
27:18and those sorts of things
27:19so clearly
27:20Julian and Carolyn
27:21were strong believers
27:23in that faith.
27:23Carolyn certainly
27:25wasn't about
27:26to break those veils.
27:28She was very devout.
27:32I'm just looking at a statement
27:33made by Karen
27:35I just want to
27:36clear up a few things.
27:39Did you talk to Carolyn
27:40about having sex with her?
27:42No
27:42I never said that
27:44I asked
27:44can we get married?
27:46She brought up having sex.
27:50So she raised that question.
27:53She raised that question.
27:57She asked
27:57so
27:58do you want to have sex?
28:01And
28:01and I said no.
28:03We wouldn't have to do that.
28:05We could just get married
28:06probably at home first.
28:08I just wanted to make vows
28:10because I felt uncomfortable
28:11about the sleeping arrangements.
28:14Sleeping arrangements?
28:16Sleeping in the sleeping bag together.
28:17Caroline has made a statement
28:25in which she says
28:27that you
28:28in fact
28:28have brought up
28:29the question
28:29about having sex.
28:31Do you have any comments
28:32to make in regards to that?
28:35She's saying
28:36that I asked her
28:36to have sex.
28:39Yes.
28:40Caroline also said
28:41that you mentioned
28:41if you had sex
28:42that it would keep you warm
28:43and you'd have a better chance
28:44of survival.
28:47Do you have any comments
28:48to make in regards to that?
28:51No, she misunderstood.
28:53I mentioned marriage.
28:55I never mentioned sex.
28:56Never once
28:56did I mention sex.
29:01Well, you've obviously
29:02got some feelings
29:03for Caroline.
29:04It's fair to say.
29:05You've previously
29:06been having a boyfriend
29:07girlfriend relationship
29:08for some time.
29:09Why did you
29:09take her against her will?
29:11You could see
29:21that probably
29:22his plan was
29:22that this was going
29:23to be a fairly
29:24quick ordeal.
29:25Kidnap his girlfriend.
29:26Take her out
29:27in the bush.
29:28Have sex.
29:30Be married
29:31in the eyes of God.
29:33Julian was very
29:34insistent
29:34that this was
29:35to occur.
29:36This was a young
29:37man
29:38who just wanted
29:39to have sex
29:40and he has just
29:41put together
29:41the most bonkers
29:42kidnapping plan here
29:44and plot to go
29:44about it.
29:49Julian Buckwald
29:50of Budgerie
29:51was charged
29:52in relation
29:52to the kidnapping
29:53of a 17-year-old
29:54with whom he'd
29:55sought to go
29:55on a picnic.
29:56The court was told
29:57at an earlier hearing
29:58that police allege
29:59Mr Buckwald
30:00had posed
30:00as a kidnapper
30:01before blindfolding
30:03the teen
30:03and driving her
30:04to Buchan
30:04where he convinced
30:05the girl
30:05he'd also
30:06been kidnapped.
30:08Day one
30:08of this trial
30:09look it had
30:09absolutely
30:10captivated
30:11the entire
30:12La Trobe Valley
30:12community.
30:13Police had
30:14an absolute
30:15mountain of
30:16evidence against
30:16him.
30:17I've never seen
30:17it before.
30:18A fairly clean
30:19cut case like
30:20this and yet
30:21he's walked in
30:22and he has said
30:23to the judge
30:24and to that
30:24courtroom in
30:25Morwell
30:25I'm pleading
30:26not guilty.
30:31Police prosecutors
30:32had gone into
30:33this case
30:33with what they
30:34thought was
30:35the silver bullet
30:35in this case.
30:36they had Julian
30:37Buckwald
30:38he was on
30:39camera at
30:40the scene
30:40of the crime
30:41confessing
30:42to this
30:43Kate.
30:44The whole
30:44incident of
30:45Caroline being
30:46kidnapped
30:47was staged
30:48by yourself
30:49what would you
30:49say that?
30:50You're correct.
30:52Even though
30:52Julian made
30:53admissions
30:54admitting to
30:56what he had
30:56done
30:56he fought
30:58this
30:58vigorously.
31:00when somebody
31:03makes full
31:04admissions on
31:05a video
31:05and also
31:06on a
31:06proper
31:07police
31:07interview
31:08we're very
31:09surprised
31:09that when
31:09they then
31:10go to
31:10court to
31:10say that
31:11they are
31:11not guilty
31:11of the
31:12offence.
31:13In the
31:14pre-trial
31:14arguments
31:15they tried
31:15to say
31:15that all
31:16the
31:16admissions
31:16that he
31:17had made
31:17were
31:17coerced
31:18by police
31:19and that
31:19it wasn't
31:20made of
31:20his own
31:20free will.
31:23Police
31:24soon were
31:24dealt their
31:25biggest blow
31:25of this
31:26trial when
31:26the judge
31:27actually ruled
31:28that evidence
31:28was inadmissible
31:29because of
31:31the simple
31:31fact that
31:32there was
31:32no cell
31:33phone reception
31:33out there
31:34in the
31:34Victorian
31:34National Park
31:35and that
31:36meant that
31:37Julian didn't
31:37have access
31:38to a lawyer
31:39at the time
31:39of that
31:39confession.
31:41Now but
31:41what police
31:42did have
31:42in their
31:42back pocket
31:43though is
31:44that they
31:44had interviewed
31:45Julian a
31:45short time
31:46after that
31:46video confession
31:47back at
31:48the station.
31:48Look this
31:49was only
31:49an audio
31:50confession
31:50but it
31:51still had
31:51the 22
31:52year old
31:52confessing
31:53to all
31:53of those
31:54crimes
31:54so police
31:55were now
31:55hanging
31:55this entire
31:56case
31:56on that.
31:57that Tuesday
31:59I told
32:00the Watsons
32:00that I'd
32:01take Caroline
32:01on a picnic
32:02but in reality
32:05we were on
32:07my property.
32:10I got out of
32:10the car
32:11left her in
32:12the car
32:12went down
32:13to the fence
32:13pretended to
32:14check on
32:15something
32:15I had heaves
32:16of clothes
32:17there
32:17put on
32:18to pretend
32:19to be
32:19someone else
32:20so she
32:21wouldn't
32:21recognize me.
32:24I opened
32:24the door
32:25I reached
32:26in and
32:27unbelted
32:27her
32:27and grabbed
32:28her arm
32:28and pulled
32:29her out
32:29and she
32:30fought back
32:30a little
32:30bit
32:31but I
32:33held her
32:33down
32:33and tied
32:34her hands
32:34behind her
32:35back.
32:38So after
32:39the committal
32:40hearing
32:40the brother-in-law
32:41provided us
32:42with information
32:42very specific
32:43information
32:44which included
32:44receipts
32:45and other
32:46evidence
32:46from a
32:47business
32:48that he ran
32:48with Julian
32:49and these
32:50receipts
32:51led us
32:51to identifying
32:52places of
32:54purchase where
32:55Julian got
32:55rope maps
32:56and other
32:57items that
32:57were used
32:58in the
32:58commission
32:58of the
32:58offence.
33:07I think
33:07one of the
33:08biggest moments
33:08in this case
33:09actually came
33:10when the
33:1017-year-old
33:11Carolyn Watson
33:12actually took
33:12to the stand
33:13herself
33:13and the
33:14court heard
33:15her testimony.
33:16By all reports
33:17it was raw
33:18and it was
33:19unflinching
33:19and it was
33:20one of the
33:21biggest boosts
33:21to the police
33:22prosecutor's
33:23case against
33:24Julian
33:24Buckwalt.
33:26On the
33:26evening of
33:27the second
33:27day
33:28Julian
33:28first started
33:29talking about
33:29sex.
33:31Basically
33:32Julian
33:32told me
33:33that if we
33:33had sex
33:34it would
33:34keep us
33:35warm
33:35and we
33:36would have
33:36a better
33:37chance
33:37of survival
33:38and that
33:39we would
33:39be married
33:40before God.
33:42During the
33:43middle of the
33:43night
33:43Julian
33:44woke me up.
33:46He was
33:46really angry
33:47and said
33:48that he
33:49had given
33:49up on
33:50getting home
33:50alive.
33:53Most days
33:54Julian
33:54would say
33:55it was
33:55getting cold
33:55and maybe
33:56I should
33:56reconsider
33:57having sex
33:57with him
33:58to keep
33:58warm.
34:00I kept
34:01saying no
34:01to him.
34:02He would
34:03then bring
34:03up marriage.
34:04I kept
34:04telling him
34:05no.
34:06Finally
34:06Julian
34:06replied
34:07that's
34:07fine.
34:08But as
34:09soon as
34:09we were
34:09out of
34:09here
34:10he would
34:11never
34:11see me
34:11again.
34:12it was
34:17a high
34:18risk
34:18manoeuvre
34:18here
34:19that
34:19the
34:19defense
34:20has
34:20actually
34:20put
34:21Julian
34:21on
34:22the
34:22stand.
34:22I
34:22think
34:22a lot
34:23of
34:23people
34:23were
34:23shocked
34:24but
34:24given
34:25the
34:25way
34:25that
34:25this
34:25case
34:26has
34:26gone
34:26nothing
34:27was
34:27out
34:27of
34:27the
34:28realms
34:28of
34:28possibility.
34:28She
34:38told me
34:39she
34:39could
34:39no
34:40longer
34:40commit
34:40to
34:40me
34:41in
34:41any
34:41area
34:41of
34:42our
34:42relationship
34:42and I
34:44said I
34:44was
34:45very
34:45disappointed
34:45with
34:46the
34:46way
34:46our
34:46relationship
34:46had
34:47taken
34:47and I
34:48wanted
34:48to
34:48end
34:48it
34:48completely.
34:51He
34:51was
34:52committed
34:53to
34:53his
34:54denial
34:54and
34:55deniability.
34:58and
35:00lack
35:00of
35:00remorse
35:01and
35:03had
35:03an
35:03answer
35:04for
35:04everything
35:04but
35:07again
35:07not
35:08believed
35:09by the
35:09jury
35:09which
35:09is
35:09the
35:10most
35:10important
35:10thing.
35:13And
35:14then
35:14the jury
35:15returned
35:15the
35:16verdict
35:16and I
35:17don't
35:17think
35:17it
35:18was
35:18a
35:18surprise
35:18to
35:19anyone.
35:20Julian
35:21Buckwald
35:21was
35:21guilty.
35:23Leaving
35:23court
35:23today
35:24Julian
35:24Buckwald
35:24and his
35:25family
35:25had
35:25nothing
35:26to
35:26say.
35:27A
35:27jury
35:27delivered
35:28the
35:28verdict
35:28this
35:28morning
35:29shortly
35:29after
35:30reviewing
35:30parts
35:30of
35:31Buckwald's
35:31statement.
35:32His
35:32charges
35:33included
35:33abduction
35:34with
35:34intent
35:34to
35:34marry
35:35and
35:35kidnapping.
35:36Buckwald
35:36will
35:36be
35:37sentenced
35:37on
35:37October
35:3717.
35:39David
35:39Woywood
35:39Wyn
35:40News.
35:41Julian
35:41was
35:42found
35:42guilty
35:42on all
35:43counts
35:43which
35:44included
35:44the
35:44kidnap
35:44charge
35:45and
35:45a
35:45false
35:46report
35:46to
35:46police.
35:47At
35:47that
35:48stage
35:48the
35:49judge
35:50had
35:50adjourned
35:51the
35:51matter
35:51for
35:52a
35:52later
35:52date
35:52to
35:53send
35:54down
35:54sentencing.
35:56Essentially
35:56this
35:57was case
35:57closed.
35:58Julian
35:58Buckwald
35:59was
35:59guilty
35:59and
36:00now
36:00we're
36:00just
36:00waiting
36:01for
36:01sentencing.
36:05Sentencing
36:06came and
36:07we're all
36:07there.
36:09Except
36:10Julian.
36:11His
36:11parents and
36:12their friends
36:13arrived on
36:13time this
36:14morning but
36:14there was
36:15no sign of
36:15Julian
36:16Buckwald.
36:16Everyone
36:17else was
36:17there but
36:18it was
36:19pretty obvious
36:20that he
36:20wasn't going
36:20to turn
36:21up.
36:21The
36:22convicted
36:22kidnapper's
36:23failure to
36:23appear for
36:24his
36:24sentencing
36:25has sparked
36:25a major
36:26manhunt
36:26with detectives
36:28calling for
36:28public help
36:29in locating
36:30the fugitive.
36:31No comment.
36:32No comment.
36:33We will
36:33certainly be
36:34pulling out
36:35all stops
36:35to try and
36:36find Julian
36:36and bring him
36:37before the
36:37court.
36:39It was an
36:40unusual case
36:41and the
36:41judge made
36:42very specific
36:43comments
36:44around it.
36:44In all his
36:45years as a
36:46judge he
36:47couldn't remember
36:49a time
36:50where an
36:50accused
36:51didn't turn up
36:52for his
36:52own
36:52sentencing.
37:01We then
37:02got a warrant
37:03issued by
37:03the court
37:04and had
37:04that listed
37:05against his
37:05name on
37:06all our
37:06police systems.
37:10He'd
37:10managed to
37:11get a
37:12passport that
37:12was an
37:13Indian
37:13passport.
37:15Bear in
37:15mind this
37:15was a
37:16young man
37:16born in
37:17Germany.
37:17He had
37:18fair hair,
37:19fair skin
37:19and blue
37:20eyes.
37:21You
37:21couldn't
37:21make this
37:22up.
37:22He dyed
37:23his hair
37:23black and
37:24he put
37:25boot
37:25polish on
37:25his face
37:26to disguise
37:27his appearance
37:28which to
37:31the embarrassment
37:31of the
37:32Melbourne
37:32airport he
37:34was able to
37:34get through.
37:36In
37:37Singapore he
37:38attempted to
37:39board a
37:39plane to
37:40India and
37:41the Singaporean
37:42authorities
37:42looked at
37:43this passport
37:44and said
37:44this is
37:44ridiculous.
37:45This is
37:46not a real
37:46passport.
37:47This is
37:47not you
37:48or it
37:48is you
37:49but you're
37:49not Indian.
37:50They went
37:51through his
37:52luggage,
37:52found his
37:53birth certificate
37:53in the name
37:54of Julian
37:54Buckwald
37:55and put him
37:57back on a
37:57plane and
37:58brought him
37:58straight back
37:59to Australia.
38:02We met
38:03him at
38:03the airport.
38:05He had
38:05been sentenced
38:06in his
38:06absence.
38:07I think it
38:08was seven and
38:08a half years
38:09jail for the
38:09kidnapping.
38:11And then
38:11later he
38:12received another
38:13six month
38:13sentence for
38:14failing to
38:15attend at
38:15court and
38:16for the
38:16false passport.
38:19During his
38:20sentencing last
38:21week Judge
38:22John Smallwood
38:22said anyone
38:23found aiding or
38:25abetting in
38:25Buckwald's
38:26disappearance
38:26would face
38:27serious
38:28consequences.
38:29Today police
38:30say they
38:30believe Buckwald
38:31was assisted
38:32in his getaway
38:32and investigations
38:33are continuing.
38:35It seemed to
38:36us at the
38:37time that he
38:37was having
38:38some form of
38:39assistance.
38:40We don't know
38:40who that was
38:41from or if it
38:42even happened
38:42but certainly
38:43there's some
38:44lingering questions
38:45there that police
38:46have been unable
38:46to answer.
38:48I'm quite
38:49confident Julian
38:50didn't act
38:51alone in his
38:52setting up his
38:53escape to
38:54India.
38:54It's pretty clear
38:55that he had
38:56certain assistance
38:57and I would
38:58suggest from
38:59the family.
39:00It felt like
39:01someone got into
39:02the passenger
39:02seat as the
39:03passenger seat
39:04moved.
39:05When Carolyn
39:06started to tell
39:06us what had
39:07occurred to us
39:07she remembers
39:08someone getting
39:09into the front
39:09passenger seat
39:10because of the
39:11compression of the
39:13seat going down
39:13and the door
39:14opening.
39:14When she
39:15believed she
39:16was at the
39:16gate of the
39:17property someone
39:17got out of the
39:18car and closed
39:19the door and
39:21that was the
39:21last she knew
39:22of someone being
39:22in the front
39:23passenger seat.
39:26No.
39:27Not evidently,
39:28no.
39:31We spoke to
39:32his mother at
39:33length about it
39:34and she was very
39:35adamant she had
39:35no idea or no
39:36knowledge and
39:37Julian and his
39:38mother were
39:38extremely close
39:39and I'd find it
39:40very hard to
39:40believe that she
39:41didn't know his
39:42intentions to
39:42leave.
39:43We weren't
39:44able to find
39:45any direct
39:45evidence to
39:46link a
39:46specific person
39:47but we had
39:48suspicions that
39:49maybe a family
39:50member, a
39:51close family
39:51member, was
39:52involved in the
39:53planning and
39:54organising of
39:55this case.
39:57Julian was
39:57sentenced to
39:58the seven and a
39:58half years jail.
39:59Upon completion of
40:00that sentence he
40:01was deported.
40:02He'd come to
40:03Australia when he
40:04was not even a
40:05year old and had
40:06never become
40:06Australia's
40:07citizen so hence
40:08he was deported
40:09back to his
40:09birth country.
40:13Julian wasn't
40:17remorseful for
40:18this.
40:18He wanted to get
40:19away with it the
40:19whole time.
40:20He was always
40:21running from this.
40:22He was never going
40:22to take responsibility
40:23for his actions.
40:25And I actually
40:25wonder what would
40:26have happened if
40:28we hadn't solved
40:29this matter and
40:30Carolyn had seen
40:31him for how he
40:32wanted to be seen
40:32as a saviour and
40:33someone that would
40:34protect her.
40:35When would he have
40:37stopped this
40:37elaborate lie that
40:38he was always the
40:39offender?
40:39I don't know if
40:40that would have
40:40ever come out.
40:42I suppose after
40:43everything's been
40:44said and done here
40:45it's just nice to
40:46know that Caroline
40:47Watson has just
40:48been able to move
40:49on with her life
40:50and put this whole
40:51sorry chapter behind
40:52her.
40:53It's very hard to
40:54understand why
40:55Julian did the
40:56things he did.
40:57Throughout the
40:58whole process and
40:59the years to date
41:00Julian has not
41:01once showed any
41:02remorse to the
41:04horrific crime that
41:05he has committed
41:05against Caroline.
41:08Knowing that
41:08Julian put all
41:09this preparation
41:10in just to
41:12secure a
41:12girlfriend it's
41:13a lot of work.
41:14So yeah one of
41:15the strangest cases
41:16I've ever been
41:16involved in.
41:20So one of the
41:21strangest parts of
41:22it all was that
41:23when we spoke to
41:23the brother-in-law
41:24he provided us
41:25information around
41:25the receipts but
41:26he also told us
41:26about the fact that
41:28he and Julian had
41:28watched a specific
41:30movie before this
41:31event and the
41:32movie was Seven
41:33Brides for Seven
41:34Brothers.
41:35I'm here today to
41:36get me a wife.
41:37I don't want him to
41:38go back home
41:38empty-handed.
41:41You're all pretty
41:41and fresh and
41:42young.
41:43I'll keep you in
41:43mind.
41:44Clearly the plot
41:45of that movie being
41:46around the Seven
41:48Brothers kidnap the
41:49Seven Wives and
41:50take them into a
41:51remote location
41:52where the snow
41:52falls and no one
41:53can get to them
41:54and they marry them
41:55or intend to marry
41:56them but don't.
42:01But as I say
42:02was a Russ Tumbling
42:04fan, watched the
42:05movies, Tom
42:07Thumb, watched the
42:09movie Side Story,
42:10one of my favourites
42:11but because I watched
42:12those stories didn't
42:13mean I was going to
42:14go out and kidnap my
42:14girlfriend, I was
42:15going to repair shoes
42:16or I was going to
42:18join a game called
42:19the Jets.
42:19They told me that the
42:22Salvatore Dolly
42:23painting had been
42:24stolen from Rikers
42:25Island.
42:26Why would there be a
42:27Dolly painting in
42:28Rikers to begin with?
42:29It's a prison.
42:30They put a sign
42:31onto it that says
42:33the painting is worth
42:34a million dollars.
42:35Maybe this is an
42:36opportunity.
42:37Who would be able to
42:38get into the
42:38warden's office?
42:39It's not like a lot
42:40of work goes into
42:41this.
42:41Not on my end
42:42anyway.
42:42Everything about
42:43the Rikers theft
42:44is amateurish.
42:45I can't imagine
42:47being that dumb.
42:48Ooh!
43:09Ooh!
43:15Ooh!
43:16Ooh!
43:16Ooh!
43:17Um!
