00:01Scott straight to the red line.
00:04Damage.
00:05Damage.
00:06Not doing it!
00:07Stay still!
00:08Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:10It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:15Stand over!
00:16You're under arrest.
00:17Intentive supply class.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25You got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the UK's most dangerous roads.
00:30I don't know what's been killed out of this.
00:32I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast you're going?
00:34It's scary when stuff like this happens.
00:36In life and death situations.
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be chasing!
00:41We've got runners.
00:42Face down!
00:45Yes, yes, successful state.
00:49Around every corner.
00:51Great acting, mate.
00:53There's a new challenge for the traffic cops.
00:57They're part of the vehicle now!
01:00I'm going home.
01:01David!
01:02Stop grabbing me like that!
01:06It's crash, crash, crash!
01:09Coming up...
01:10Long side of a cheap restaurant, right?
01:12Long side of the right, mate.
01:14The traffic cops battling a surge in car crime.
01:17We've got runners.
01:19Don't give it!
01:20Don't give it!
01:21Don't give it!
01:22Don't give it!
01:23Don't give it!
01:24Don't give it!
01:25Don't give it!
01:26Don't give it!
01:27Don't give it!
01:28Don't give it!
01:29Don't give it!
01:30Keep your hands where I can see them!
01:31Hunting down dangerous wanted suspects.
01:33You're under arrest on suspicion of robbery.
01:37And teenage thieves on the run.
01:39We stalked over the fence and then towards that scaffolding.
01:43Come out now!
01:57From an A to all units monitoring this channel, we've just had an ANPR hit for a vehicle.
02:02Standby for details.
02:04Across the East Midlands and Yorkshire, a sharp rise in car crime is stretching police forces.
02:122-8.
02:13High performance marked vehicle.
02:15Advanced driver.
02:16T-pack train.
02:18Vehicle thefts at the moment seem to be massively on the rise.
02:21In particular, we seem to be getting hit with a spate of 2-in-1 burglaries,
02:25whereby a person or a group of people will burgle an address purely to get the keys for the vehicles on the driveway.
02:34Traffic cops, like Matt Cork, face criminal gangs using tech and fake registrations to steal high-powered cars.
02:44There's a vehicle that's hit up a few miles away from here.
02:48And basically, it's been identified today as a clone vehicle.
02:57From 7-1, this clone, it's been in around Notch yesterday, or found last night at 7th time and then when he's found.
03:02I'm going to be jumping out and looking over the side of the bridge.
03:08Thieves try to avoid getting caught by using cloned car registrations, copying the identity of a genuine vehicle.
03:16Just remind me of the reds if they want five.
03:20One five.
03:22Do you know what colour the clone is?
03:24It's silver.
03:28They use four or five different sets of number plates, regularly stopping and changing them to try and prevent us from keeping tabs on where they've been.
03:36It's just gone underneath us.
03:39Yeah, it's got you thinking.
03:41So, just trying to make some ground now.
03:44Yeah, 2-8, I've got him in sight, giving him about 300 yards.
03:49So, at the minute, we're just waiting for some more units to get to us, with the view 2, putting a pre-emptive box on the vehicle.
03:59So, we'll look at doing that as safely as we possibly can.
04:02As Matt tails the suspect, control directs other units to help stop the car.
04:08I am monitoring. Just keep the update. You've got one vehicle very close to you.
04:13Just look in for other vehicles.
04:15We want to get things in place, tactics in place, to prevent a pursuit ever happening and get the occupants under control.
04:21But, with that, comes a risk, both to myself, to my colleagues, to members of the public, and to these people that are trying to get away.
04:36I've got three plane, not scars behind it, all cheap back.
04:432-8 monitored.
04:45There are now ten units from three different forces in pursuit.
04:492-4, can you let the car come up and get sort of down to the safety? We should be able to put a tactic on all of it.
04:56Yes, please. We'll look at putting a box on, and we'll get the safety on. We've got quite a good sterile zone here.
05:03We'll get some passage to it, and we'll get it on. Move up on me.
05:07Part as the units surround the suspect.
05:10Yes, coming off, off, off at the services.
05:13The driver pulls off the motorway.
05:14Be a life to the Contraflow team. Be a life to the Contraflow team. Be a life to the Contraflow.
05:21At that moment in time, they've got nothing to lose.
05:24They're not thinking about the risks they're taking.
05:26It's absolutely vital to remain calm. We've got to have some sort of tactical resolution in place to try and bring the pursuit to a stop safely.
05:41And the quicker we're able to do that, the better.
05:457-0 and it's 4-0. Crossing the solid white line. Notting solid white again. Speed 6-0. Going for the overtake of two vehicles. One side of the two black collars.
05:58Not Sierra 2 to Derbyshire Crim. Concern you've authorised this pursuit.
06:02Yes, it was authorised.
06:04With the pursuit crossing borders, Nottinghamshire's control takes the lead.
06:10Wrong side of the chief left, all right. Wrong side of the roundhouse. Right, right, right.
06:20Speed 6-0 heading north.
06:24Wrong side, light block. It's stopped on the side of the road.
06:27I've got runners. Generally, two or pound centre.
06:31Stop! Not doing it!
06:34Two men have run from the car.
06:43I thought you were one of them.
06:46I don't know. 2-8, did you see them make it through this hedge line?
06:53Possibly not, though.
06:54No.
06:55From 7-1, two, I think two occupants, both wearing dark clothing. That's all I can give you.
07:01With no sign of the two runners, a drone operator arrives to assist.
07:06If she was used to have disappeared now.
07:15Yeah, just that heat source there, but...
07:18Hmm.
07:20Not so, Bob. Member of Public, we're saying there's one in the back garden.
07:23The next garden, there's a heat source hiding behind the shed.
07:33Just compare the next garden along the double.
07:36Yes, yes. Keep going. Keep going.
07:41Stop! There, on your left, there's heat source there.
07:43There's a big shed at the back.
07:46Stop your lungs!
07:49Face down!
07:52Stay there!
07:54Get up your tank.
07:55Mate, you're under arrest, especially dangerous driving,
07:57theft of that motor vehicle.
07:59I don't know if I've said anything, but it may harm you to fence
08:00if you don't mention my question.
08:02Something which layer will only court.
08:03Anything you do see may be given in evidence, alright?
08:05Sorry, not too much.
08:08Anything dangerous in pocket?
08:10I think so, no.
08:12Just phone and cigarette.
08:14ID?
08:16No ID.
08:18Can we utilise you?
08:20With one arrest made, nearby the second runner is found.
08:25From 7-1, we've got one detained.
08:27The dog had got another one in the garden, at the top of the road.
08:30Right, I'm going to go with these guys, OK?
08:33As I say, mate, when I've arrested you on suspicion,
08:35I've left them over here.
08:37Right, put your knees forward, lean forward a little bit.
08:42Put your hands behind your back, now.
08:45Two other suspects have also been arrested by the Nottinghamshire officers.
08:50They've got the other two.
08:51So there's four?
08:52Four have been detained.
08:57While all four men are taken for questioning,
08:59officers search the suspect's car.
09:02The police have found two bags containing electronic scanners and transmitters.
09:16The potential is like a relay device to steal vehicles, continuously.
09:24They've got another one of them in it but like a more powerful one.
09:27Yep.
09:28And then the actual scanning laptop, if you like.
09:30Probably quite an expensive bit of kit, aren't they?
09:31Yeah, I would imagine so.
09:33So the kit that's been found in the car certainly appears to be the sort of equipment used
09:38to gain entry to keyless entry vehicles.
09:42And then some of the other equipment, including laptops and OBD plugs,
09:47appear to be what they would then use to start the car having opened it
09:50and drive it away without a key.
09:53Matt continues searching the bag.
09:56Stickers, so that double-sided sticky tape, so that plates can be swapped over almost instantaneously.
10:03Crafty balaclava.
10:04So everything in that bag suggests to me that these people are out, they're up to no good,
10:09which is obviously why they're in a cloned vehicle.
10:11Vehicle's on false plates.
10:13And if we'd not got on top of them tonight, I dare say there'd be a few people waking up to find their cars
10:19we've been off the drive in the way in the morning.
10:20With keyless entry, keyless start, you've got an app and there is no key.
10:28But with the removal of a physical key for a car,
10:32come signals which can be intercepted.
10:35And there are people getting the hands-on technology that is intercepting these signals
10:42who almost trick the car into thinking that that is the owner with the genuine key.
10:50Coming up...
10:58Traffic cops track down a dangerous suspected car thief.
11:02Keep your hands where I can see them.
11:04Have you got anything on you that you shouldn't have?
11:06What you need to understand is, you're coming with us.
11:09And car criminals putting lives at risk.
11:13All I'll say is, how do you think you should have felt if I'd have come and knocked on the door
11:17and said that you've been dragged down road and killed?
11:19They don't care.
11:21On the M1 in Derbyshire, traffic cop Sgt. Scott Riley is responding to an urgent call for backup.
11:48for backup. Not behind the stolen car. Just going past services. Officers from Nottinghamshire
11:57are ahead tailing a suspect car. It's a black Audi S7 been stolen from Northampton. At the
12:09minute we're just racing to catch up. Across the UK a car is stolen every eight minutes.
12:18Car crime, burglaries, have all gone through the roof.
12:24This vehicle yesterday involved an election in where a guy can choose. Did we have a description
12:30of a weapon? Control search for more information about the suspect vehicle. For many of all units
12:38that are following after this vehicle, please be advised, it does have warning markers for
12:42potential firearms. These criminals are some of the most dangerous criminals we've come
12:47across. We've seen them offer weapons towards homeowners. We've seen them offer weapons
12:54towards police. We've seen them drive at police, do anything to stop us stopping them.
13:00With Nottinghamshire's firearms units en route... So we're just treading a bit carefully.
13:21An unmarked car ahead tails the suspect.
13:28Covertly following it at the minute so we're not getting too close to it.
13:34They will do absolutely anything in their power to get away. They don't care about hurting
13:39the members of the public. Because they know that if we catch them, they will go to prison
13:44for a long time.
13:46They will go to prison for a long time.
13:49Not so I'll be to follow it in.
13:53That picture authorised. I would like the marked vehicles to move through and overtake me.
13:59Got you now.
14:03Darvish Rusk, Sangosera 4 is also with the stick.
14:08Multiple police units from two forces close in on the suspects.
14:11Off-off services into the lorry park. May it come to a natural units and hop on me please.
14:26Show me your hands, show me your hands. Keep your hands where I can see them.
14:30Anybody else in the car? Just come over here. Just stay nice and chilled, yeah?
14:34If somebody mentions to you firearms, it really focuses your mind that actually the only
14:41right thing to do is get that person handcuffed and take any ability away from them to cause
14:48you any harm.
14:49Any weapons, anything that would hurt me, hurt my colleagues?
14:53What happened?
14:55Have you got anything on you that you shouldn't have?
14:58You shouldn't.
14:59Okay, what language do you speak?
15:01Romanian.
15:02Romanian?
15:03Yes, sir.
15:04Okay.
15:05Okay, right.
15:06You've been stopped.
15:07Yeah.
15:08That vehicle you're driving is reported as stolen.
15:10Who?
15:11Yeah.
15:12That is a stolen car.
15:13Stolen.
15:14Stolen.
15:15Not yours.
15:16Not your car, is it?
15:17No, it's my car.
15:18It's not a friend's car.
15:19Okay.
15:20Well, whosever car it is, has told the police, stolen.
15:25Stolen?
15:26Yes.
15:27While Scott detains the suspect, officers check the man's ID.
15:32Have you been arrested before?
15:33No.
15:34No?
15:35First time in cuffs?
15:36Yes.
15:37In the UK?
15:38Yeah?
15:39How long have you been in the UK?
15:41I've had one years.
15:42One years?
15:43Yes.
15:44Yeah.
15:45The more and more I'm hearing on the radio and the more and more we look into his past,
15:56you then get a sense of who you're dealing with and what you're dealing with.
16:00Are you giving the correct details?
16:01No.
16:02Are you giving the police correct details?
16:03Yes.
16:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:06Scott suspects the man's provided a false name.
16:16A search of the car uncovers some alarming items.
16:24That's a knife.
16:27Good job, ain't it?
16:32I got a knife.
16:36There's only one reason for carrying these.
16:39It's for protection and to use them.
16:41Intimidation, aren't they?
16:42Massive intimidation.
16:44I mean, look.
16:49Assault's name that he tried to give us.
16:51Despite being given a false name.
16:54Yeah, I've seen them to 100%.
16:57Scott believes they've identified the suspect.
17:00So what's he wanted for?
17:02This individual's wanted for a very serious crime where he's used a knife to obtain that car.
17:10He's driven halfway up the country with that stolen property.
17:14So what lengths is he going to go to to get away from us?
17:17I'll lock this chap up.
17:18Yeah.
17:19What's the details of the robbery?
17:20Between the hours, 20 past 7, 20 past 8, robbery, GBH.
17:25Okay, mate.
17:26At this moment of time, you're under arrest on suspicion of robbery.
17:29You do not have to say anything, but it may harm you to say anything.
17:31So I'll make sure when questioned, some people are later aligned in court.
17:34Anything you do say, you may be given in evidence.
17:36Do you understand?
17:37No, no.
17:38I know English is not your first language.
17:40Yes, ma'am.
17:41But what you need to understand is, you're coming with us.
17:44Yeah.
17:45You understand that, yeah?
17:46You've got to go to the back, false policy, mate.
17:50I know, it's uncomfortable.
17:51That's how they've got to go.
17:53That's how they've got to go.
17:55No.
17:56Especially, of course, for what you've been arrested for.
17:59You've been arrested for a violence offence.
18:02I'm not putting my colleagues yet.
18:04A robbery is violent.
18:06I'm not violent, mate.
18:07Alright, a robbery is violent, trust me.
18:09So now what we've got to do is going to do the fun bit.
18:15And write all the paperwork up.
18:22Looking at the weapons that have been found in that vehicle presents a real danger to officers when we're stopping that vehicle.
18:28And then that's a little bit of a wake-up call for you that you need every now and again to remind you that it is a dangerous place out there.
18:36It's a DW percent.
18:37I've turned on.
18:38It has done by the dam.
18:39It's just reacted and shot off, I see.
18:40What core is it, mate?
18:41It's grey or silver, I think.
18:42It was dark.
18:43Very high speed.
18:44It's in excess of eight zero.
18:45On the northern edge of the county, Derbyshire traffic cop Chris Wells-Jackson is playing catch-up to another suspected car theft.
18:58South Yorkshire have got a fail to start with a possible clone vehicle, so we're going to make his way up to the border just to give him some assistance in case they come on to us.
19:13The scale of car crime, burglaries, theft of motor vehicle, vehicle cloning at the moment is absolutely ridiculous.
19:31We'll get criminals that come from Sheffield, from Nottingham, Manchester, Leicester that come into our county with the sole purpose of finding a high-powered, high-valued vehicle.
19:42I'm taking it.
19:51It's going to be a decamp shortly, I think.
20:00South Yorkshire and Derbyshire officers have gone into the woods after him, so hopefully they'll pick him up shortly.
20:07The helicopter's above him, we're not going to lose him.
20:12Yes, we're still watching this male running away. He has a very small dog with him that's running alongside him. He's making good ground, he's almost at the railway station.
20:21Quite a few cops stood down there on a containment, so they can't be far away.
20:27After a 30-minute search, the runaway suspect disappears.
20:34I can't believe we've not found him, though. I know obviously the tree line's quite thick, but the helicopter being above him.
20:40But moments later, control updates.
20:43It's a Range Rover Evoke in black. It's been stolen in Chesterfield.
20:47Yeah, received.
20:49It's another call about another stolen car.
20:53It's been stolen off the driveway, and they smashed the window to get into it, and managed to get it started somehow.
21:00Land Rover, Range Rover thefts, so common at the moment, they seem to have a way of getting into them without the keys, and they're away in a few seconds most of the time.
21:13With a number of units still searching the South Yorkshire border for the missing suspect, police resources are stretched.
21:22If it comes up towards me, definitely not going to have any T-pack capability.
21:26And if it's a team that's stealing them, I mean, this is the second one into it this night tonight.
21:31Yeah, it's just a nice car out position.
21:34You get seriously organised criminals that will actively go out, target particular vehicles at particular properties,
21:41they'll do the research, they'll go out in the daytime and look at the properties they want to break into,
21:46look for the cars that they want to steal, or go out later that night and steal the vehicle.
21:52And it's not just one or two vehicles, they'll go on to steal four or five.
21:56Sometimes you're looking at £250,000, £300,000 worth of vehicles going in the space of four or five hours.
22:03Say again, sir, you want me to go and look at CCTV for it?
22:06Chris is asked to check the victim's house for any footage of the suspects.
22:11Yeah, receive.
22:13The IP, he's going to be at home, see if there's any other CCTV on the street.
22:20She says that the vehicle was parked on the side of the road.
22:23As Chris makes his way, control updates on the victim's son.
22:28He's got into his friend's car and driven down the road.
22:32As he pulled in front, he's just gone into it backwards and then ban him.
22:37He's put himself at a massive risk.
22:40Most of the stolen cars hit him in a bit to get away.
22:44He's then spun 180.
22:47And he's collided with a parked vehicle.
22:50Luckily for him, the occupant of the stolen car has not got out with any sort of weapon and tried to, er,
22:55tried to injure him.
23:03He flipped us completely around in the car, like completely around.
23:07But obviously, because it was like being in a bumper car, as he hit it, he's turned me this way.
23:12So I'm facing that way.
23:13And then the last time I seen it, I just seen that I'm...
23:15That'll have just been the weight. That'll have been the weight in his vehicle.
23:18It's one of those things, because this car was stolen,
23:20I didn't think that he would damage the car in the process, if you know what I mean.
23:23But he just wants to get away, that's the thing.
23:26All I'll say is, in my experience, they're willing to have a go with us and hurt us.
23:30So if they're willing to do that to us, what are they going to do to you?
23:32Do you know what I mean?
23:33So it's just, it's one of those things.
23:36And all I'll say is don't put yourself in danger, because it's a car.
23:39I know it's your car and it's precious to you, but at the end of the day, it's a car and you can replace it.
23:43But if you, for whatever reason...
23:45It's more the way that it made my mum feel, I could see it...
23:47Of course, yeah, of course.
23:48But all I'll say is, how do you think you should have felt if I had come and knocked on the door and said that you'd been dragged down the road and killed?
23:53Oh, that's awesome.
23:54They don't care.
23:55It's gone badly wrong a few times in the past where people have chased after stolen cars in their own vehicles and the criminals have turned on them, beat them up to an extent where they could have quite easily died and they've come away with serious injuries.
24:11Sometimes life's changing.
24:12I looked him straight in the face twice, once when he was ramming at us and then once when he was outside here.
24:18I recognised the guy.
24:20The victim's CCTV might provide clues to the suspect's ID.
24:25So this is when it happened at 2042.
24:29So this is my car outside.
24:32Hmm.
24:33And then here, I rang the police at 2044.
24:37Yeah, that'd be about right, yeah.
24:39Yeah, and then this is obviously...
24:41Oh, what's that doing?
24:43Oh my God.
24:45He's not letting me play back.
24:48A lot of the time we find that criminals actually tamper with people's cameras.
24:53They're actually starting to jam people's Wi-Fi signals to those devices at the time that they're committing the offence.
25:00So you sort of have that blank spot of a few minutes when the offence takes place and then everything seems normal again with the cameras.
25:07Has anyone else got CCTV?
25:09I've just put an email thingy onto our Facebook group for you.
25:13So this is what, this is it.
25:14Mm-hmm.
25:15So she heard that and took a photo and then this is me coming out and trying to switch my car alarm off.
25:18Obviously we didn't realise it.
25:20You can't see anything.
25:22It's a bit like...
25:23But I obviously, like, what's going on with my car?
25:25Yeah.
25:26And then I come closer and then obviously I realised that he's in the car and then literally it just went.
25:33Landromes, Range Rovers are so common at the moment.
25:41They've just got a device that reads the code of the key.
25:45A lot of modern cars with modern technology have also got the cons that it makes it easier to steal because the criminals also have technology that appears to be better than the ones that immobilise the vehicle.
25:58It was literally that my son, he went out to the shop.
26:03It must have been really short because he's left here.
26:06It was five minutes and they must have been watching.
26:08They must have been watching.
26:10I think they must have been watching it because he's had nothing on heart.
26:14I've had nothing with that car out of time.
26:16Yeah.
26:17I've essentially seen him walk out.
26:19I think no one's in the house now.
26:20I'll try my luck.
26:21Yeah.
26:22It's not just somebody that's taking an opportunity as they walk past a vehicle in the street and sticking a screwdriver in the lock and popping it open and hot wiring it.
26:31It's people that are actively going out to steal cars that are worth £50,000, £60,000, sometimes more, because they know that they're going to get a lot of cash for it.
26:39And a good night's work for them is £250,000, £300,000 worth of vehicles.
26:44That's something that would take me 10, 15 years to earn, working honestly.
26:49It's just the reality of it, unfortunately.
26:54I'd love to be able to sit there and tell a victim that we're going to be able to lock the offenders up and that they're going to get put in prison.
26:59But I just have to be brutally honest with them and tell them that the chances are very slim of them seeing the car again.
27:08And chances are it's going to be used in more crime or it's going to get found dumped somewhere.
27:16And they're probably never going to want to drive it again because the criminals had a hold of it.
27:22It's just a complete invasion of privacy.
27:25Coming up.
27:32Just quietly on camera.
27:34Got decamp, decamp, four out and running.
27:37Teenage car thieves on the run.
27:42Yeah, it's committed under the bridge.
27:44And a race to stop another stolen car.
27:47Right, move up, move up, move up.
28:08On the Derbyshire border with South Yorkshire.
28:11Yes, we've just acquired it on camera.
28:14Traffic cop Chris Wells-Jackson and officers from the two forces are part of an air-to-ground search for a stolen Audi.
28:21Pass three, one, nice. Double back on you. We've got decamp, decamp.
28:26Four out and running.
28:30An eight for four, nine, it has decamps. I'm literally about a mile away from where it is.
28:35Pass three, one, no. We've got two to ground.
28:38Is there any way out of this?
28:40Yes.
28:42With two men on the run in a nearby housing estate, Chris races to the scene.
28:48Yeah, pass three, one, no. We saw him going through that extension.
28:52The police helicopter directs unit towards the missing suspects.
28:57I'm just outside the house.
29:02And that's three, one, there. I've got a format unit together.
29:05Keep going for it, please. Don't let me call.
29:07Here's to the right.
29:10Unit, turn left there, please. Turn left.
29:14Yeah, the unit's on there. Stop there. On your left. On your left.
29:17So there's outbuilding. Stop there. Check a vehicle. You're right outside.
29:20Outbuilding, stay to your left there.
29:23They came over the fence at the rear, and then it went into that extension area.
29:29It's on the left of the property here, so you're looking at it.
29:32I don't want to send dog in, so come out now.
29:34I can't see. I'm not quite tall enough. But first time ever.
29:50I can see it back, so if no one goes out, I can see him, but go on.
29:53Can you get round to the side here?
29:56Not yet.
29:57That's just better off going round back.
29:59I'll go next dog.
30:01There's always something in the back of your mind when you're in that scenario,
30:04thinking, if I climb into this building, what am I going to be faced with?
30:09Is there anybody in there that's willing to harm me?
30:11And your experience tells you that you need to be on edge constantly
30:15because you never know who you're dealing with.
30:19Recently, I've dealt with jobs where these lads have got knives on them.
30:26That gate's locked. I can't get over.
30:30Is it literally to the other side of this wall?
30:31Yeah, yeah.
30:32So they wouldn't have gone out at the back?
30:33They're on their edge.
30:34You could get out at the back, but M plus are saying they've not.
30:36If they're right above it and they've not come out other side,
30:38the only other way they could have gone is in there, innit?
30:40There is scaffolding on the back of that extension that's been built.
30:48It's possible there's hiding place under there.
30:51Up in the corner there at the back of that extension,
30:54we saw them go over the fence and then towards that scaffolding.
30:58Go on, I've got Ben.
31:01Go on. I'll get Ben.
31:05You can't get in that door there, can you?
31:08Tom, check door.
31:09Check handle.
31:10Check handle.
31:12Ash, I've got a bus here.
31:14He's on the floorboards.
31:18No one here, mate.
31:21It's coming out now.
31:24Stick your feet on here, mate.
31:26Lift your feet up.
31:30Quite sneaky, really.
31:31Because when you're actually climbing there on face value,
31:34there's nobody in it, but when you're lifting the floorboards up,
31:36they were playing quite slightly underneath it, so...
31:39Bring your feet down into this bin here.
31:42Drop yourself down.
31:43Put your head on that bolt.
31:45I've kept moving.
31:46I've got it.
31:47Set your send down, otherwise you're going to...
31:48Set your send down.
31:49Brake failure under arrest.
31:51A lot of the burglaries and thefts that I've dealt with,
32:04and the pursuits that follow as a result of those vehicles being stolen,
32:09they're a mixture of different people.
32:11But to discover that it's a couple of teenagers that are in that vehicle,
32:18that have been out stealing other cars,
32:20and you look at their previous criminal history
32:23and you see that they've got a list as long as your arm of thefts and burglaries,
32:27it's just unbelievable to think that they're not even 20 years old.
32:31Ambassador One, apologies, we are going to have to leave now.
32:36But thanks for your help.
32:38Yes, yes, thank you very much for your assistance. It's appreciated.
32:44See you at the next one.
32:46See you later.
32:47See you later. Cheers, mate.
32:49See you later, mate.
32:51The two that have been detained, one of them,
32:53I've heard his name a few times, banded around,
32:55and he's very well known for being involved in burglaries and theft of motor vehicles.
33:00I think he's only a teenager, so it looks like his career as a criminal started very early,
33:10and he's continuing.
33:12Fingers crossed he'll get a decent sentence.
33:23That number plate doesn't match that thin plate.
33:27Coming up...
33:28There's two Land Rovers with the same room plate.
33:34The traffic cops uncover another stolen vehicle on the move.
33:38Catching criminal gangs in stolen or cloned cars is a nightly operation for the traffic cops.
34:0311 miles east of Derby, near the M1.
34:18Any else looking for seven?
34:20I'm out my vehicle, looking over the overbridge.
34:23Traffic cop Andy Swift is trying to spot a cloned car linked to a spate of thefts from heavy goods vehicles.
34:30Yeah, it's committed under the bridge.
34:37Thank you for that.
34:39Detective Simon authorised on the vehicle.
34:41Bug out through.
34:43Yes, it's just gone under the underbridge.
34:45I think that's going to be it.
34:49Tango 47, it's contact contact.
34:52Lane 2, speed 7-0.
34:54Yes, thank you for that.
34:55She'll just go into a pursuit.
34:58It will be authorised and the ship tickles on the pursuit.
35:01I'm still waiting to.
35:03Anyway from Tango 47, the plan will be, if it keeps maintaining lanes like this,
35:06then it'll be a case of a multi-lane box.
35:10A multi-lane box requires four units.
35:13One to hold traffic back, and three others to surround the vehicle and bring it to a stop.
35:20They've killed the student vehicles on the track, close by.
35:24Lots of the Tango.
35:26Well, three T5 units are all sat in.
35:29As Andy keeps his distance, backup is on its way.
35:34Traffic cop Sergeant Scott Riley is nearby.
35:40Yeah, Tom's like taking your past here.
35:44Stand by there.
35:45You'll see me.
35:49Sergeant, you've just gone past me.
35:50Do you want me to go up to you?
35:52Yes, yes.
35:53Commit south, Scott.
35:54We're a third of a mile now to the next junction, so yeah.
35:56Move out.
35:58Where's that Oscar do you there, Moe? Have you caught up yet?
36:01Come on, get with us.
36:07Third vehicle officer.
36:11With enough units in place, the officers move in to surround the car.
36:16Right, are we all together?
36:18Yes.
36:19The three vehicle box.
36:20I'll go front, whoever's second, if you go near side, and then third vehicle if you go off side.
36:28Yes, yes.
36:29I've got it.
36:32Right, move up, move up, move up.
36:34Then third vehicle, stop.
36:35No, damn it.
36:36Do you follow this officer, please?
36:37No.
36:38So we can have a chat with you.
36:39Could you follow this office, please?
36:58So we can have a chat with you.
37:00Swifties, I'll follow you.
37:03The suspect car contains a family,
37:06not who the officers were expecting.
37:09And I took them somewhere south and get all of these towers.
37:14So we shall take them to the exit
37:16and we'll sort out what we can.
37:19Because obviously someone's driving around in the wrong vehicle.
37:27Good evening, sir.
37:29I don't know what my sergeant's explained or not so far.
37:32So there's two Land Rovers
37:34with the same number plates.
37:37One's registered T-Self
37:40and one's registered somewhere else in the country.
37:43That number plate doesn't match that VIN plate.
37:49While the car's identity is checked,
37:51Scott talks to the driver.
37:53Did you buy it from a garage or a private sale?
37:56Private sale.
37:56I checked the H24 car.
37:59Yeah.
37:59I paid £10 online.
38:01The HPI?
38:02Yeah, HPI.
38:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:04Check it clear.
38:05If it's not clear, I know why.
38:08The chassis number that you've passed us,
38:10we've done a check on it.
38:12We've got a report on it.
38:13It's stolen from the London area.
38:15It's saved.
38:15Right, bad news is,
38:18this is a stolen car.
38:23Yeah, I appreciate you bought it legitimately,
38:27but this is currently a stolen car from the London area.
38:31You've done your HPI check on that,
38:33but that isn't this car.
38:38So your HPI would have come back clear
38:40because that is a car that looks exactly the same as this one.
38:44But the problem is the VIN plate,
38:47this little one here, this,
38:49which is a vehicle identification number,
38:51that comes back to a different year and a different vehicle.
38:56So it looks like you've been defrauded, unfortunately.
39:00So what we're going to have to do now,
39:01I'm not going to give you good news,
39:02I'm not going to lie,
39:03the police are going to have to take this vehicle from you now
39:06because we're lawfully bound to do so
39:08because somebody somewhere has lost a very nice car.
39:14I get that you haven't stolen that.
39:16I absolutely get that.
39:18But that is somebody else's car.
39:19If you said I take it to the police station,
39:23I give you my car,
39:25and I sort out about my money.
39:28I really understand what you're saying,
39:30but it's not something I can do
39:32because it is a high-value stolen car.
39:35So it's not something I can just let go.
39:38It's really sad because we've actually almost transferred the victim
39:42because we've just now uncovered another victim
39:44who's lost just as much money
39:45as the person who lost the initial car.
39:48We've absolutely got to get the car back to the right owner
39:52or to the insurance company that paid out for it.
39:56We don't want to leave you stranded.
39:57If you're happy that you and your family can stay here
39:59until somebody picks you up from Leeds,
40:01that helps us, I'll be honest,
40:03but the offer is there to take you back up a bit further north
40:06if you need it.
40:06But if you're happy stopping here
40:10and getting family to pick you up from here, that's great.
40:14So I'll let you make that decision.
40:17Could we get your family out of the car
40:20so this man can get the vehicle?
40:21That's all right.
40:22Do you want to ask them to get out?
40:26With the recovery underway,
40:28Scott and Andy checked the car's history.
40:30See, he's managed to insure it and everything.
40:37So basically, the owner that's got the genuine one,
40:40his V5's been superseded.
40:43The DVLA basically think that the one
40:45that's still running around London,
40:47they think that's been moved on.
40:49So the DVLA would never know?
40:50No.
40:51So there's only one vehicle on PNC,
40:53but two insured, yeah.
40:55Unfortunately, you've got to check your VIN number, haven't you?
40:57That's the only way you can do it.
40:59Yeah.
40:59Of course, he's got keys, haven't he?
41:02So they're clearly closed in and they're recoding in.
41:13In the last six months,
41:15across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire,
41:18the police received nearly 7,000 reports
41:21of burglary and car theft.
41:25It's frustrating because every incident you respond to
41:28you know that there is a victim.
41:32A victim that's going to be seriously affected,
41:35not just for tonight, not just for the night after,
41:37but for a long time to come.
41:39The prisons are so full, the system's so stretched
41:44that people aren't getting the sentences now
41:47that they're used to.
41:49And we're dealing with the same people
41:51on a daily basis, a weekly basis,
41:55a monthly basis.
41:56And if those people were in prison,
41:59where they should be,
42:00then this level of offending would come down.
42:03In this episode...
42:15We've got runners,
42:20generally 2-0 down centre.
42:22The man the police believe failed to stop
42:25in a cloned car linked to burglary offences...
42:27Show me your hands!
42:29...has been charged with dangerous driving
42:31and no insurance.
42:33One detained the dog,
42:35another one in the garden.
42:36Another runaway suspect
42:37was charged with handling stolen goods.
42:40Put your hands behind your back now.
42:42The two men caught with laptops and transmitters
42:45were charged with going equipped to steal.
42:48All four men are currently released on court bail.
42:51The two men arrested at a motorway service station
43:05in a stolen car with knives inside
43:07have been released under investigation
43:09under suspicion of robbery and burglary
43:12while the police further their enquiries.
43:18Realised there isn't a car
43:20and then it just went.
43:22No suspects have been identified
43:24in connection with the theft
43:25of the Range Rover Evoque
43:27near Chesterfield,
43:28but the car was found the following day
43:30by the victim's son.
43:34We solved over the fence
43:35and then towards that scaffolding.
43:37Sit down.
43:40Two teenagers arrested near Sheffield
43:42after running from a stolen car
43:44have been released on bail
43:45under suspicion of burglary,
43:47dangerous driving,
43:48no insurance
43:49and possession of drugs.
43:54Committed under beverage.
43:58Right, move up, move up, move up.
44:00And the cloned Range Rover Evoque,
44:03stopped by Scott and Andy on the M1,
44:06was linked to a spate of thefts
44:08from lorries
44:08and confirmed as stolen.
44:10It has been returned to its insurers.
44:14It has been returned to its insurers.
