00:00It's gone straight to the red line.
00:04You've got damage, you've got damage.
00:06Not doing it! Stay still!
00:08Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:10It does have warning markers for potential firearms.
00:15Don't hold it! You're under arrest.
00:17Intent supply class to be a drug.
00:19Police a thousand square miles.
00:23It's a crash, crash.
00:25You've got any other injury other than your head?
00:27With some of the UK's most dangerous roads.
00:30Oh, no one's been killed out of this. I don't know.
00:33Do you know how fast you can go in?
00:35It's scary when stuff like this happens.
00:37In life and death situations.
00:39Get on the ground, you'll be tainted!
00:41We've got runners.
00:43Face down!
00:46Yes, yes, successful stick.
00:49Around every corner.
00:51Great acting, mate.
00:54There's a new challenge.
00:56For the traffic cops.
00:57They're buying a vehicle now!
01:01I'm going home.
01:02David!
01:03Stop grabbing me like that!
01:09Coming up.
01:11That's over there.
01:13Car criminals on the run.
01:15Contact, contact.
01:16This vehicle is failing to stop.
01:18Confirm failing to stop.
01:20It's just been cannibalised.
01:25Officers tracking down stolen vehicles.
01:28One careful owner.
01:2920 grand, it's yours.
01:32Do you want it?
01:35And truck thieves.
01:36Tie is off.
01:37I'm going to leave three.
01:39Risking lives trying to escape.
01:41Vehicles come to us.
01:43Stop, stop, stop!
01:45They're running across the side right.
01:46They're running across the side right.
02:01Observations for an AMPR hit for a possible cloned vehicle.
02:05At force control, there's a report of a car theft.
02:09Any units you can stop making the way to the area, please be obliged.
02:12It's just one of over 350 vehicles stolen every day across the UK.
02:21I'm bringing a 2-4 of that vehicle.
02:22They've got no reports on it.
02:23Ten miles south, near Derby, traffic cop Matt Cork is responding.
02:28A short time ago, we were notified from a member of the public that they'd come home to find their house had been burgled and their car had been stolen.
02:35We've been able to identify a vehicle which we believe to be involved, which is a blue Audi S3.
02:40From a to all units, we're currently heading southbound at speed if units can start making their way to the area.
02:46This car is believed to be involved with the burglaries.
02:49It's believed to be the arrival and the getaway car, if you like.
02:53We're doing some more checks at the moment.
02:54Anticipate that this car will then be picked up in convoy with the stolen vehicle.
02:59At which point, we may be able to identify what plates the stolen vehicle is now showing.
03:04Police suspect the Audi is fitted with a copied or stolen number plate.
03:08So we've now got a mark on that vehicle.
03:10It's started to activate cameras again on the knots border.
03:13So we've got a number of units heading towards that area.
03:15There's a number of reasons that criminals choose to clone vehicles.
03:19They use four or five different sets of number plates.
03:22Regularly stopping and changing them to try and prevent us from keeping tabs on where they've been.
03:27Jobs like this, time's of the essence, to be honest.
03:30You can get a long way in a short amount of time in a car.
03:33So it's important to get as many units as we can into the area.
03:38Standby for observations. We have an ANPR hit heading southbound for observations, please, if you're in the area.
03:42In the north of the county, traffic cop Martin Carter joins the pursuit.
03:52It's an extremely fast car.
03:54And at the minute, we're just trying to play catch up with it.
03:57The knots police have stated they're unfamiliar with the area, so they've asked me to take the lead.
04:01As Martin tries to keep up, a police plane tracks the suspect car.
04:07PAS 81 is now overtaking on a solid white line.
04:13And PAS 81 is continuing now, going through a red light on the temporary roadworks.
04:19He's driving well in excess of the speed limit, going through red traffic lights.
04:23He's been overtaking on solid white lines.
04:26Approaching the minute roundabout standby.
04:28Looks like I've just got two rear occupants out. Looks to be changing number plates.
04:41And he's now off, off, off again.
04:45And it's a right, right. Approaching the minute roundabout standby.
04:49Not the first, it's the second, the second.
04:51With Matt racing to catch up, Martin closes in.
04:58That's it there.
05:00An Oscar Tango, 2-5.
05:03Contact, contact. This vehicle is failing to stop. Confirm, failing to stop.
05:08It's overtaking vehicles.
05:13Speed, 80-0.
05:14We need to bring this pursuit to a conclusion, sooner rather than later.
05:22We've got a Stinger.
05:27Cancel.
05:29Right, right, right. Right, right, right.
05:32Still driving well in excess of the speed limit.
05:34Speed increasing. Speed up to 1.
05:370-0.
05:39Vehicle is overtaking on chevrons.
05:41Vehicle continues in excess of 1, 3, 0.
05:46There is a massive amount of risk, both to myself, to my colleagues,
05:52to members of the public, and to these people that are trying to get away.
05:57At that moment in time, they've got nothing to lose.
05:59They're not thinking about the risks they're taking.
06:02Vehicle is currently getting out of sight.
06:05N-PAS retake control of commentary, please.
06:09N-PAS 81 approaching to the roundabout, standby.
06:12He's gone wrong side on the roundabout.
06:15He's taken the third, the third.
06:17This driver's well aware that he was being pursued.
06:20At the moment, I imagine he's probably not aware of the fact that N-PAS are above him.
06:24N-PAS 81, he's done a right-to-right-to-right into a housing estate.
06:34It looks like it's going to be a dead end, standby.
06:38N-PAS 81, vehicle comes to a stop.
06:41N-PAS 81, I've got four occupants out.
06:44While the police plane tracks the suspects, Martin and Matt are nearby.
06:51N-PAS 81, suspects have come out.
06:52N-PAS 81, they've driven it down to dead end.
06:53I think they've got four people jumped out and legged it.
06:57To that unit, you've just got past turn around.
07:03N-PAS 81, suspects have come out.
07:06Yeah, that's those on your left.
07:08There's three detections.
07:16Three suspects are under arrest.
07:19Some 6-3 has out-cooked here.
07:20One has jumped over the hedge into the gardens.
07:23But one more has escaped.
07:25N-PAS 82, correction 8-1.
07:27Yeah, those officers just through that hedge.
07:28Turn right, turn right.
07:33Nots job.
07:34Coming up.
07:35Isn't it?
07:36Yes, yes, that's where I last saw him.
07:37I haven't seen him come out yet.
07:39As the hunt for the runaway suspect continues.
07:41I can hear him in the garden, will you swear?
07:45Matt and Martin find some suspicious items.
07:48Got some jewellery in here.
07:49Expensive watch in the back as well.
07:53It's obviously going to be a clone vehicle.
07:55Likely stolen.
07:58And danger on the motorway.
08:00As a stolen lorry tries to escape police.
08:03In here, it's definitely on the rims.
08:05I'm telling one, it's slowing.
08:07I'm struggling one and two.
08:08I'm struggling one and two.
08:09I'm struggling one and one.
08:21M-PAS 81, our suspects have come out.
08:23That's those on your left.
08:26Near Chesterfield, a police plane is tracking a runaway suspect.
08:30Yeah, if you could go back into the gardens where you ran through, I haven't seen the final suspect come out of there.
08:36Three suspected car thieves are under arrest, but one more is on the run.
08:42So the garden that we ran through, can you see the one with the red feet bumped out?
08:47Can you say they're back in that garden?
08:49Yes, yes, that's where I last saw him. I haven't seen him come out yet.
08:53Can you take that side? I'll take this to the side. There's a side gate.
08:59Just this week, the occupants, they've got CCTV, they have seen this male run through their property.
09:05He's got a baseball cap on, dark hooded top and dark bottoms.
09:11As officers continue the search...
09:14We're approaching the housing estate now.
09:17Traffic cops Martin Carter and Matt Cork
09:21find the blue Audi which police believe has been used by the suspects to steal another car.
09:27Organised crime gangs are a massive thing at the moment.
09:30There seems to be a level of planning involved by them.
09:33Their tactics are regularly changing, which is why we have to stay innovative.
09:37When you look at the brake pad material down here, it's literally still glowing.
09:42Cars aren't designed to be pushed that hard.
09:45It's not got racing spec tyres, it's not got racing spec brake pads, brake discs.
09:49You know, it was only going to be a matter of time the way that these people were driving this vehicle before catastrophe.
09:55An intensive watch in the bank as well.
09:58Probably stolen during this burglary.
10:01The vehicle's confirmed stolen from South Yorkshire area.
10:05As you've seen, numerous false plates in the vehicle.
10:09Probably been used in multiple burglaries across many counties.
10:13There are obvious signs that we see.
10:16But to average Joe, two Audis with the same plate looking at them,
10:19you wouldn't know which one should have that plate on it and which one shouldn't.
10:22Nearby, there's another discovery.
10:25We've got some jewellery in here.
10:29Looks like gold.
10:30So it's potentially been involved in burglaries.
10:33With the stolen Audi recovered,
10:40a dog handler arrived to search for the runaway suspect.
10:43To fly east.
10:45We believe that's how they find his gun.
10:47Property to the left-hand side of your vehicle.
10:50I last saw him in that garden.
10:52I can hear him in the garden, are you sure?
10:56Yeah, near the top unit.
10:58He's in the garden, near the caravan.
11:00Have we got him up there?
11:09Catching these sorts of criminals is very rewarding.
11:12There's a real sense of achievement knowing that you've put four behind bars for burglary.
11:16You know, nine out of ten cops would say exactly the same.
11:19They've joined this job to put bad people behind bars.
11:30As well as car theft, traffic cops are seeing an increase in stolen HGVs and freight crime.
11:38It's got an info marker for an Izetto lorry bearing the plate for a token.
11:45Traffic cop Matt Cooling is looking for a suspicious lorry on the motorway.
11:50On 2 at 9, I'll start to come towards the M1.
11:56The lorry is thought to be using a cloned registration
12:00and is being tracked by several police units from two forces.
12:04Committed, committed and one no.
12:08It's obviously going to be a cloned vehicle, likely stolen.
12:11And normally those types of vehicles are used in freight crime.
12:14So, you know, it could be full of tens of thousands of pounds worth of stolen gear.
12:18We've got, you know, a large HGV that's not stopping.
12:23We don't know who's in it, we don't know what's in it, how we're going to stop it,
12:27what we're going to do if it doesn't stop.
12:29There's lots of things now starting to go through his head.
12:32What are they going to do to get away?
12:34Obviously, you've got units behind it.
12:37I could be ahead then if you need that necessary.
12:41Matt races ahead of the pursuing officers.
12:44Any pursuit is dangerous,
12:58but ones that involve HGVs in particular really do raise the stakes.
13:03What are they prepared to do to get away?
13:05They've got a heavy piece of machinery there
13:07and if they want to plough through a police car,
13:09you know, they're quite capable of doing that.
13:11My plan would be to use yourself as blockers.
13:16Yeah, understood. I'll stay in the south.
13:19Yeah, that's received.
13:21Zane 2, 5-0.
13:26As Matt waits for the lorry.
13:28Got a near side indication. Off, off, off.
13:31The driver makes an unexpected move.
13:34It's off, off, off.
13:36Proces around about standby direction.
13:39Leaving Matt out of position and having to catch up with the pursuit.
13:43Round and round about standby.
13:45Taking the M1 southbound.
13:49It's off, off, off. Standby.
13:54Approaching the red traffic lights.
13:56Lights are through the sequence.
13:58The HGV gets to a junction and then it basically loops back round to come back on itself.
14:08And for us that is a bit of a problem.
14:10Because we're always then trying to second guess where it's going, what it's doing.
14:14Lean two.
14:15Looks like we're doing a reciprocal standby.
14:17Knock three.
14:19Knock three.
14:20We're back on.
14:22Con.
14:23M1 northbound.
14:32M8.
14:33Have we considered M-pass at all?
14:35M-pass at all but we're out of town I'm afraid.
14:38Have we got any other RPG units?
14:40Third off the motorway.
14:42You're going to pass it on the opposite carriageway.
14:44It's going to be here somewhere.
14:46That's it there.
14:47Standby.
14:48Main one.
14:49Speed at 6-0.
14:516-0.
14:52Just passed the half mile mark forward.
14:56300.
14:58200.
15:01100.
15:02Standby.
15:04Got an offside indication going into lane 2.
15:0710.
15:08As officers ahead move in for a stop, Matt holds the traffic back.
15:147-3.
15:15We've got a block on staff, Matt.
15:17Only going to be possible for a lane 1-6.
15:20Yeah, that's received.
15:24The important thing for us is to get this vehicle stopped and to get it stopped safely,
15:28causing the least amount of damage and risk as possible.
15:32We need specialist equipment, like getting the appropriate Stinger ahead of it to puncture
15:37its tyres.
15:40An 829, back of the stick, I've got safety.
15:43I've got the block on the north.
15:46From Stinger, we are now your rear safety.
15:49We've got traffic in the distance but still got quite a sterile area.
15:54Further ahead, officers lay a trap to burst the lorry's tyres.
15:57Stinger is basically just a plastic strip, you know, full of hollow spikes that we can
16:02throw and deploy, you know, in front of a vehicle that's failing to stop.
16:06The spikes need to be bigger to puncture HGV's tyres to what would be required to puncture
16:11a car tyre, and trying to get that mobilised takes some planning.
16:21Vehicle's been stung. I'm sure how many tyres?
16:24Vehicle's slowing, 1-0. Quite a strong smell coming from the HGV.
16:32Lane 2, 5-5, it's swerving. Still lane 2.
16:40Interior is definitely on the rims. Under lane 1, it's slowing. Struggling 1 and 2.
16:45Struggling 1 and 2.
16:51Tire's off.
16:53Into lane 3.
16:55Still travelling.
17:02Coming to a start lane 4.
17:06Lichty on.
17:10Prepare for a decamp here.
17:13Vehicle's come to the...
17:16Stop, stop, stop.
17:18They're running across the carriageway.
17:20North, Southbound carriageway into the woods.
17:23Dog's out.
17:25Come on.
17:27Where's the dog?
17:29It's just the other side of that wall.
17:31I appreciate it, it's quite high.
17:33None in, mate.
17:35Where that post is, straight up.
17:36We've just got cops just on the southbound carriageway at the minute.
17:41And they're just searching the woodland, which is where the offenders were seen to run into.
17:46We've got the motorway held behind us in the carriageway.
17:49We're going to keep the motorway shut for safety.
17:52And then we've got the knots drone.
17:55We've got knots drone out.
17:58Two, two, it's potentially could be in these trees.
18:03Crossed over into a field.
18:05There's definitely something in there.
18:06It's the heat source.
18:07Keeps moving.
18:09Is it in front of me?
18:10If you're the single officer, directly in front of me stood still, yeah.
18:13It's about 10 metres in front of you.
18:16Probably about 11 o'clock.
18:19NA, I've got a male.
18:21He's saying he's around the dog ladder.
18:24It sounds like one of the occupants at Steed Camp's been found.
18:29So he's been arrested at the moment.
18:31One man is detained, but the second is still missing.
18:35Another heat source through the north.
18:36Is that where we're stood now?
18:40Yeah.
18:42Is the heat source large, or could someone be in the trees behind it?
18:47No, you're directly with it.
18:49Right where you are.
18:53Yeah, all of them.
18:55They weren't in the dock for anything?
18:57No.
18:59These lads that are driving these lorries aren't the masterminds of the operation.
19:02These are lads that are paid a nominal fee just to drive the lorry.
19:05They used to drive the lorry from A to B with the stolen goods on board.
19:08But it's those that are risking the court.
19:10So their incentive is obviously to get away.
19:13I've just had the highways asking, have we got any idea of how long the motorway is going to be closed?
19:22Once the drone and everything is down, we'll reassess openly.
19:26We'll actually get to lane one and two reopened shortly.
19:30Stand by, I'll update if we can.
19:32Just negotiating, coming out now from the trees, it's quite heavy on the ground.
19:37After 15 minutes searching, the second suspect is found, and Matt reopens the motorway.
19:42It's a great outcome.
19:43You know, we've managed to get this vehicle stopped safely.
19:44There aren't any members of the public getting involved and hurt.
19:45You know, we've ended up chasing after these guys to catch them and arrest them and they've not got away.
19:50And the teamwork involved in doing that, you know, was massive on that night.
19:53But it really is satisfying.
19:54It's a great outcome.
19:55It's a great outcome.
19:56You know, we've managed to get this vehicle stopped safely.
19:57There aren't any members of the public getting involved and hurt.
19:58You know, we've ended up chasing after these guys to catch them and arrest them and they've not got away.
20:15And the teamwork involved in doing that, you know, was massive on that night.
20:18It really is satisfying that we have caught them.
20:28Coming up, cracking down on car thieves stealing to order.
20:32There could be a piece of glass there that's been broke with a bit of blood on maybe.
20:35It could be a fingerprint potentially somewhere.
20:37And Sergeant Scott Riley is on the hunt for motorbike thieves.
20:46So we're just going to head out up into the north of the county.
21:04She's been subject to burglaries again last night.
21:07So I'll head up there and see if we catch any burglars.
21:12Traffic cop Matt Cooling is starting a night shift.
21:15Yeah, you're right. I'm going to start heading up now.
21:18Was it ten o'clock then, that other one?
21:20All right, mate.
21:22I'll probably stick on the periphery as such then because I'm obviously going to be that X5, aren't I?
21:26If you're knocking about in a plane car.
21:28With a recent rise in car thefts along the Derbyshire border, officers in unmarked cars are deploying to the area.
21:35All right, mate. I'll see you up there.
21:38Yeah, all right. See you in a bit.
21:40I've just had a quick chat with some of our colleagues.
21:44They're obviously aware of the issues up at the north of the county with all the burglaries that we're suffering from.
21:48So they're going to go up in a plane car and obviously we'll go up and assist in a marked car.
21:53This is what I joined the job to do, you know, is to catch burglars and car thieves.
21:57And at the minute, you know, we've got a real big issue up there of that type of crime.
22:02There's lots of cars being stolen in different pockets and it does cause us, you know, a massive problem.
22:08You're always going to find that people, you know, unless they're caught, they're going to keep what they get away with.
22:15Obviously there's a massive financial reward for, you know, licking someone's car, van or caravans.
22:24Matt takes up a position near Chesterfield.
22:27We'll sort of take this primary spot and see what comes past.
22:32The problem is it's just, you know, it's just hunches into which way they're going to come in,
22:39putting yourself in the right area, but, you know...
22:43It is a game of cat and mouse.
22:45You're always second guessing where they're going to be and what they're going to target.
22:49But you've got to be in that area, you know, at the right time.
22:52And if you're not out there, then we're never going to catch these people.
22:55Range Rover Evoke in Black headed off towards Newbold.
23:00They're getting the track of details.
23:02It's stolen off the drive.
23:04Keys have not been taken.
23:05Had a track on it.
23:06They're just getting the track of details.
23:08It's gone off towards the Newbold area.
23:10Tango 29, I'm en route down the bypass.
23:13Mick, I'm going to come off to Sheetbridge and into Newbold that way.
23:18Just on the bypass now.
23:20I'm just thinking where to park, mate.
23:22It's one of a couple of ways it could come.
23:25We've basically just had a report of a theft of a Land Rover Evoke that's been stolen in Chesterfield,
23:32which apparently had a tracker on it, but they think that's now been blocked, that signal,
23:37because they can't track it.
23:39So it was last headed towards Newbold, which we're on the outskirts of.
23:42So we'll just sit here, just on the off chance that it comes out this way.
23:46Hey, Robbie.
23:47How are you?
23:48Good, mate.
23:49Are you out looking for this stolen car?
23:51Yeah.
23:52We're just waiting for a location for it, mate, because it's just pinged again, apparently.
23:57They'll probably hide it, won't they, and then come back in a week or two after.
24:00Well, potentially.
24:01That's if they've not ripped it out, but...
24:03Yeah.
24:04I think the general about-and-air for nicking modern cars,
24:07certainly the ones with keyless entry, is to clone that signal.
24:11You know, they'll use various bits of technology that will do that,
24:14and then that tricks the car into thinking that, you know,
24:16they're stood next to it with the key.
24:18Units out looking for this Range Rover Evoke.
24:22The track has just activated, so they're just getting the location.
24:25Apparently it's stopped on an industrial estate,
24:27but they're just confirming the exact location with the caller.
24:30Standby.
24:31They've said Armada Way, if that rings out to anyone.
24:36Apparently there's a right-hand turn off that that leads into an industrial estate.
24:41We're not far off now.
24:43Where it's last pinged, it's around this corner.
24:48Yeah, I think I've got it parked up, abandoned.
24:53Yeah, I've got it recovered.
25:05Looks like the driver's window's been smashed.
25:08If I can get recovery arranged, please.
25:10The track on the car's reactivated and gave this location as to where it was.
25:16Luckily, obviously, because we were in the right area at the right time,
25:18we've got it really, really sharpish.
25:20Probably only been abandoned, I suspect, a couple of minutes at the very most.
25:24So, luckily, we've got a car back, you know, without having a pursuit,
25:28and it looks like with relatively little damage that's been caused to it
25:31other than the driver's window that's been smashed,
25:33which I suspect is what's been caused in the process of licking it.
25:37As Matt inspects the car, colleagues arrive in support.
25:41I've asked for recovery.
25:43I mean, obviously, I don't know if things have been touched and disturbed or what.
25:46I mean, this has probably only been here a couple of minutes, maybe.
25:49I've not seen anyone when I've turned up.
25:51Yeah, so it's been thrashed here, hasn't it?
25:55Because it's so quickly been taken,
25:57I personally think, no, to get it recovered and, you know, get forensic on it,
26:01because you've got glass in there.
26:03Best chance of catching it.
26:05It's not been driven for days and days, has it?
26:08Yeah.
26:10There could be a piece of glass there that's been broke
26:12with a bit of blood on, maybe.
26:13Could be a fingerprint, potentially, somewhere.
26:15So, hopefully, they'll examine the car tomorrow.
26:18Find something that we can link back to an offender.
26:22As officers leave to search for the thieves.
26:27Ah, right, Brill.
26:28The owners of the stolen car arrive.
26:30It's been dumped, mate.
26:31The only damage that we can see to it is the broken driver's window.
26:34So, we're basically going to get it recovered for CSI to have a look at it.
26:38Just on the off chance they've left something forensically there.
26:41I know it's going to inconvenience you,
26:42but it's the best chance of us catching them.
26:45If you've got a key then, can we...
26:48Just the car keyed up, if that's fine.
26:50And have you caught it on CCTV as well, if there was a mention of?
26:53My daughter had a little bit on the ring bag.
26:56Yeah, right.
26:57My daughter lives opposite, so she watched it happen.
26:59Right, okay.
27:00So, she saw somebody reach into, well, smash the side, side window.
27:06Yeah.
27:07Reach in.
27:08Up tallies then, yeah.
27:09Then we heard the alarm go off.
27:10Yeah.
27:11And that was it.
27:12Right, okay.
27:13We looked out the window and it had gone.
27:14She was just in a bit of shock.
27:15I do believe they've been watching us because we've literally just gone up to bed.
27:18Right, okay.
27:19I think the experience of the victim is going to be horrendous.
27:22You know, the fact that someone's broke into the home and taken the car, you know, it's a pretty despicable thing to do.
27:29The problem with modern cars nowadays is your key is always emitting a signal.
27:35Right.
27:36And what these crooks do is they'll come with, you know, an antenna and a piece of software that basically acts as a go-between between the car and your key.
27:43Yeah.
27:44Hence why they can start it and not have the key.
27:46Erm, in future, you need to look at buying a Faraday bag.
27:49Faraday.
27:50It's basically a foil lined bag.
27:51Just at night, you pop your keys into it and it stops the signal.
27:54Well, just get a box and put some tin foil around it.
27:56Yeah.
27:57You know.
27:58They've got such cheat though, aren't they, this time of night, literally.
27:59Yeah, yeah.
28:00I don't believe they watched us go to bed.
28:01Yeah, yeah.
28:02They really do.
28:03At least you've got your car back relatively undamaged.
28:05Yeah.
28:06No other than the glass.
28:07We'll wait here now till it's recovered.
28:08The car will be kept and not released until it's been forensically looked at then.
28:11There could be a piece of glass in there with a minute speck of blood on or something.
28:14You just don't know, do you?
28:15So, we'll do what we can.
28:17Lovely.
28:19All right.
28:20Good night then.
28:21Thanks very much.
28:22See you, mate.
28:23Turn that up.
28:24Turn that way.
28:25No, I don't think it's anything else.
28:27So, we'll just sit and wait for the covering in.
28:31Hey, Tega, turn on.
28:32Turn on.
28:33I take it you've took the stolen marker off this vehicle and took it off the hot list.
28:38Yeah, we have indeed.
28:40We're really close to catching them on the basis of the last update as to where it was
28:47by the tracker and how far we were away, which was only, you know, within a couple of minutes.
28:51When we've arrived, we've not seen anyone, you know, in the vicinity or walking away or anything
28:56to suspect that they're responsible.
28:58Clearly, just missed them.
29:01It's really important that people start to understand how vulnerable their vehicles are, especially
29:07if they are, you know, keyless entry.
29:10It's important that people either, you know, look to stop the signal being emitted from the key
29:14or they buy a physical lock, you know, whether it be a gear stick lock or some sort of steering lock.
29:23I'm motivated to catch these sort of people because I think they can come and just do what they want
29:27and take other people's things without consequence.
29:42It's past 2am coming up to Normanton in Derby.
29:45On the outskirts of the city centre, Sergeant Scott Riley is looking for another suspicious vehicle.
29:51There is a stolen van from Derby.
29:54So we'll drive around to see if that raises its head.
29:58But before Scott has a chance to search for the stolen van, there's an urgent call.
30:03Yeah, I was behind a motorbike, two or two of them, by the Farber.
30:12Not really been aware of our presence.
30:14Sarah Falls near the hospital, I met my way to the area.
30:18Making his way to Olverston in Derby where ARVs have had what they believe to be a stolen motorbike make-off from them.
30:26They're saying they're struggling to ride it, which is quite common when they're unfamiliar with new bikes when they've stolen them.
30:34So it'll be worth us going to have a look, see if we can persuade them to dump it.
30:41Up in the north of the county, we're having one or two stolen a night.
30:45It's a problem at the minute.
30:46I don't know anyone that likes to spook them.
30:49I'm going to walk down the tree, Mark.
30:52Behind where the ditch is.
30:54ARV, I'm just next to your car, where are you?
30:56The cycle track, just to the near side of it.
31:03As Scott arrives, officers are in a foot chase.
31:06Which way from the bike?
31:12You walk down the path towards the bike.
31:14You run right across the grass.
31:23Saw something in black down here.
31:24I saw somebody in black but I think it was you.
31:42Where did they go from the bike?
31:44Cross.
31:45So straight over the road.
31:46One's been down this side actually.
31:56Were they wearing the helmet?
31:57It's got some forensics.
31:58It was quite a nice thing, wasn't it actually?
31:59It's not like a little moped, is it?
32:00No.
32:01And I was on this path.
32:02He was trying to fire it up.
32:03I could just see him firing it up and riding it straight out of me.
32:04It's what, stolen?
32:05Brilliant result.
32:06I think it's right out of fuel of course.
32:07It's dropped a bit of fuel there, hasn't it?
32:09Two offenders have made off.
32:12We've just got a dog unit coming into the area now,
32:27trying to see if they can track.
32:29The difficult is, three officers have been out,
32:31so that will disturb the track for the dog.
32:33But if the dog does pick a track up then we'll be gaining.
32:35but then we'll be game on because there's nobody else out on the streets at this time of night.
32:39We know that we're looking for two young offenders, probably late teens, early 20s.
32:43What I'm going to do now is just go around in plain car and see if we can pick anybody up.
32:53What we're trying to do now is run parallel to where the path is, the old canal,
32:59and see if we can pick anybody up walking off it.
33:02But the trouble is now, even if we get somebody linking them to that bike,
33:08to be good intelligence, well, that'll be about as much as it'll be.
33:15There's one running on the canal path.
33:18Come through to the motor road, running down the canal path.
33:23It's gone from the bloody canal path.
33:28You know, they've got a left left.
33:32Possibly gone into the house in the state's left.
33:43That's where all the police fans are.
33:50Where were you when you shouted one running?
33:51We were on the canal path, which is at the end of this road.
33:55We've seen him stood around here on this field.
33:57I don't think he's made it onto that main road.
33:59We've just come from down there.
34:00Yeah.
34:00Because there's loads of...
34:02You were there and we were not far behind you, so...
34:05You've just come past us down there.
34:06I think they'll be in gardens.
34:08I'll try and get containment on at the back.
34:10As Scott continues to search, a drone arrives.
34:18We've got a dog unit, we've got a drone, plenty of cops.
34:23That's all we really need.
34:25It's just whether we're lucky enough that they're still in the area.
34:28I can hear the police dog barking, but it really is going mad.
34:38Sounds like it's got something, but I've not heard anything over the radio.
34:41They could be in these gardens, but there's a big sports field back there.
34:46And the officer did say that they'd run back.
34:50So if I was a betting man, I think they'd be more likely to be in those fields there.
34:54The drone uses thermal imaging to detect heat sources.
35:01That's now doing the work of a dozen officers, really.
35:04Truth to tell, you could never search these gardens and be 100% satisfied nobody was in them.
35:09Whereas that drone can be 100% satisfied,
35:12because if there's no heat sources, they're not there.
35:16But despite an intensive search, there's no sign of the suspects.
35:20They've not picked any signals up.
35:22They've made their way out of the area.
35:25And that means we can get back in as cars quicker and go and search in other locations.
35:34You've got all those police resources committed to the job.
35:38So people should be reassured that if their property has been stolen
35:42and the police do see it,
35:44then that's the sort of efforts we'll go to
35:47to try and recover the property and get the offenders that have done it.
35:54People just help themselves with somebody's stuff.
35:58It seems to be we have to catch somebody two or three, four times
36:02before they get a proper sentence.
36:05So it's frustrating.
36:06Coming up, it's just been cannibalized.
36:16Thieves target high-performance cars for parts.
36:19Believe it or not, stuff like this does end up back on the road.
36:22You can get from Doveridge all the way over to Castle Donington.
36:43It's late evening.
36:45Traffic cop Paul Barker is looking for car thieves.
36:47A lot of the criminals use that.
36:51Officers have seen a recent rise in the theft of high-performance cars across the county.
36:57When I have my car stolen, it's like one of the families being stolen.
37:01You don't know where it is.
37:01You worry about where it is.
37:03If it's going to be damaged when you get it back and things like that.
37:06I've not got much in the opinion of car thieves.
37:08Professional criminals target residential areas at night, where cars are parked close to a house.
37:16Using high-tech scanners, thieves can hack into a key fob signal,
37:21allowing them to unlock and steal a car in less than a minute.
37:27Vehicle crimes, they're not victimless.
37:30People have got the car, they might need it for work the next day.
37:32If the van's stolen, they've got all the work tools in that.
37:35And if they've broken into the house to steal the car,
37:37then people have to deal with somebody being in the house.
37:40It does have a big impact on people.
37:43We've got reports of a found stolen vehicle.
37:45It's currently just parked in the middle of the street.
37:47You need to go and check that one out, please.
37:49There's been a report of a stolen vehicle being dumped.
37:53It's been stripped, and then the shell's just been dumped in Normanton.
37:56At the scene, Paul's colleague, PC Rich Morris, has found the car.
38:03We've got a stolen AMG.
38:07Whoever's had it last knows it's stolen,
38:10because you've got a VIN in the windscreen,
38:13but you've also got a visible VIN here, which has been scratched out.
38:17So the people that have had this, they know what they're doing.
38:22A VIN number is a vehicle identification number.
38:25Everyone is unique to every vehicle.
38:28So criminals will try and either alter or deface that VIN number
38:33so that that car can't be identified as its original vehicle.
38:40My guess is somebody on this road has bought it
38:45with the intention of getting it back on the road in a few weeks' time.
38:50New interior, one careful owner,
38:5420 grand it's yours.
38:57Go on it.
38:58The interior would have been worth some money anyway,
39:00so it's basically been, it's just been cannibalised.
39:04I mean, it's absolutely destroyed.
39:06Doors, interior taken off.
39:09There's thousands of cars getting stolen every year,
39:12and they're then chopped up,
39:13or they're put on different plates and sold on.
39:16High-performance vehicles are regularly being stolen.
39:18Chop Shops take stolen cars in
39:21and either strip them down and sell the component parts,
39:25or they'll cut and shut cars.
39:28That means taking part of a damaged car
39:30and welding it to a good part of a car
39:33to make what, on the face of it, looks like a decent car.
39:37However, generally not safe to be on the road.
39:40We've seen cars that have literally just split apart
39:44because they've just been welded together.
39:47Whenever you're buying a car,
39:48it's always important you check the heritage and the history of it
39:52because, believe it or not,
39:54stuff like this does end up back on the road,
39:56and that's a worrying thing.
39:59Somebody's a few quid down.
40:00This is never going back on the road.
40:02Insurance company will have it back now,
40:03and I'm pretty sure that they'll write it off.
40:06It would have been somebody's pride and joy,
40:09and it's ended up here,
40:12middle of this residential area, at midnight,
40:15just like this, blocking the road.
40:17As the stripped-out car is taken away for forensic tests,
40:21Paul heads back on patrol.
40:23It's rare that we come across a carcass like that
40:27because it does disappear.
40:28I think they end up in a chop shop somewhere.
40:30Minutes later, Paul's in-car computer triggers an alert.
40:34Stolen from street overnight.
40:36No keys taken.
40:37When found, recover.
40:39Informed Derbyshire Police.
40:41So the NPR has just pinged up on a van that's stolen.
40:47So I guess tonight is the night for it.
40:51Car theft.
40:52Can take a lot of resources to police.
40:56When somebody's car's stolen,
40:57we have to send units to try and find it,
40:59which then takes it away from our core policing
41:02of keeping the road safe.
41:10Criminals often leave stolen vehicles parked up overnight
41:13to see if they're being tracked by the police.
41:20Hello?
41:20This has been reported stolen
41:27and it's just pinged up on my NPR is stolen.
41:30And yeah, they've confirmed it is stolen,
41:33so we'll have it recovered now.
41:34Another one to be returned to the owner.
41:36It's all secure,
41:38but it's in a position where it can just be dragged up.
41:41For us on the roads policing unit,
41:43dealing with stolen cars,
41:44we deal with them all the time.
41:46It's annoying.
41:47We've just been to a vehicle that's been stolen
41:50and then stripped and dumped in the street.
41:54And on the way back from that,
41:55we've just found another stolen vehicle,
41:58but intact.
42:00So another one to be recovered.
42:02One's a 30 grand car.
42:04This one's about 10.
42:05If you've got something
42:07and somebody else wants it,
42:08they'll come and take it.
42:11Insurance companies have to pay out,
42:13but at the end of the day,
42:14society as a whole have to pay
42:15because the premiums go out.
42:17So at the end of the day,
42:18it is a society problem.
42:20Last year,
42:31over 130,000 vehicles were stolen.
42:37Car thieves make me a bit tense.
42:39We've all got a pride and joy
42:41that you have on your driveway,
42:42you can wash it on a Sunday or whatever,
42:44and some individuals just come along
42:46and take what's on your drive.
42:48That doesn't sit right with me.
42:51You'll have the people
42:52that will go out nicking the cars,
42:53you'll have the people
42:54that will work in the sort of garage
42:55that will break them down.
42:57You've probably then got people
42:57that obviously are then selling
42:59these things on.
43:00We have to stay resourceful
43:02and fleet-footed, essentially,
43:04ready to change quicker than they can.
43:10In this episode,
43:11after a 15-minute pursuit
43:13of a cloned Audi,
43:14the suspects are awaiting trial
43:16on suspicion of burglary and car theft.
43:18Vehicle continues in excess of 130.
43:23The driver was remanded in prison
43:27and also charged with disqualified driving,
43:30no insurance,
43:31and cannabis possession.
43:32It's going to be possible
43:37for a lane 1-6.
43:40Vehicle, come to us.
43:42Stop, stop, stop.
43:43The drive of the abandoned lorry
43:44was recalled to prison,
43:46but no action was taken against him
43:48for the incident shown in this episode.
43:50The passenger remains under investigation.
43:54Yeah, so it's been thrashed here, hasn't it?
43:56Police are awaiting the results
43:58of forensic tests
43:59on the stolen Range Rover Evoque.
44:02The officer lives opposite,
44:04so she watched it happen.
44:05Right, OK.
44:06The case is still ongoing.
44:14The suspected motorbike thieves
44:16have not been traced.
44:17Investigations into the stolen Mercedes
44:23found by Rich and Paul
44:24are ongoing.
44:2620 grand, it's yours.
44:29And the white van
44:30has been returned to the insurers.
44:32The police arrive at the
