00:00Did Carlos Alcárez dedicate an empty seat and golden plaque to Charlie Kirk at the U.S. Open?
00:09A series of online posts falsely claim that pro tennis player Carlos Alcárez
00:14dedicated an empty seat to the late conservative political activist Charlie Kirk at the U.S. Open.
00:19Versions of the same story add that he gave a heartfelt speech about Kirk's death,
00:24while others claim he also donated thousands of dollars to Kirk's family.
00:27Kirk was shot and killed on the 10th of September this year at Utah Valley University.
00:33A suspect was arrested shortly afterwards.
00:36And while news of Kirk's death made ripples globally,
00:38the claim that Alcárez dedicated a golden plaque and the permanent empty seat to him is false.
00:43Players do not have the authority to alter or dedicate seating at the Arthur Ashe Stadium,
00:48where the U.S. Open is held.
00:50It's owned and operated by the United States Tennis Association,
00:53and every seat is ticketed for fans during the U.S. Open or all their events.
00:57No program or policy allows individuals to permanently dedicate a seat with a plaque.
01:01Therefore, if a permanent seat dedication were ever approved at Arthur Ashe Stadium,
01:06it would have been a major news story in the world of tennis.
01:09And there is no record on the official website,
01:11nor other press releases of Alcárez dedicating a seat.
01:14The post also included a fabricated quote about the gold plaque,
01:18and Kirk, supposedly delivered by Alcárez in a press conference.
01:21But the speech was never given.
01:23U.S. Open press appearances are always recorded and distributed to media outlets.
01:27If a star like Alcárez had delivered such a significant statement about Kirk,
01:31it would appear in the official transcripts and likely be instantly covered by multiple outlets.
01:36Alcárez actual press conferences during the tournament were indeed reported on by global sports media,
01:41but none included mentions of Kirk or seat dedications.
01:43The story also claimed that Alcárez donated $260,000 to Kirk's family, but this is also false.
01:50No credible news outlet, official U.S. Open Channel, or Alcárez representative has reported such a donation.
