00:00Joining me right now is AccuWeather, Long Rains expert.
00:02You know who he is, the crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumberg.
00:06We'll be talking about next week.
00:08Let's review the tape from last Thursday about this week.
00:14While there'll be a dip here in the east, and we'll talk about that more in a moment,
00:17these areas are going to be high and dry anywhere from Oklahoma City up to Detroit, up to Portland, Maine.
00:22You've not got to see any rain. It's going to be warm and dry.
00:25Cooler weather weather with a couple of systems coming in through the Pacific Northwest.
00:28But these areas in here, we're keeping our eye on what's going on in the tropics.
00:32And there may be a lot of rain in some places early next week.
00:35I think that pretty much summed that up, Joe.
00:38It was dry. It's been dry in the century west.
00:41And earlier in the week, because of the moisture from Imelda and an upper low, it was wet in the Carolinas.
00:47It really was. But that's all changed now.
00:49That stuff is moving rapidly out the sea.
00:51And as we look ahead to next week, the first full week of October,
00:54limited drought relief from the Ohio Valley to New England.
00:57I hate to say it, but there's a front that comes through.
00:59You're not going to get an awful lot of rain with it.
01:01Behind it, a brief shot of cool air.
01:03And I want to emphasize brief.
01:04This is an overall warm weather pattern.
01:06There'll be some late week showers trying to sneak into the southwest from something
01:10trying to come out of the eastern Pacific.
01:12The frontal system that really is going to make this charge across the country
01:17is going to have a lot of cool air coming into the northern Rockies and northwest
01:19at the beginning of the week, Sunday into Monday.
01:22This front Monday will be charging towards Chicago.
01:24You'll be in the 80s on Monday, near 70 Tuesday behind it.
01:27The front gets into the east Wednesday.
01:29But because it moves so quickly, it's going to have very little moisture.
01:33There's not much of a return flow from the Gulf of America.
01:36So limited moisture, fast movement means limited rain amounts and no drought relief.
01:41In fact, let's take a look at the U.S. drought monitor, the most recent one.
01:44And you'll notice that the areas in the middle part of the country,
01:47really from Kansas City, St. Louis, eastward into New England,
01:50the drought basically has continued to worsen.
01:52There was some improvement from the most recent one
01:55where it rained heavily with the system that came through a week ago.
01:58But as you look forward, this is likely not to improve.
02:02It's actually going to get worse.
02:03The only place that we've seen some improvement is in the western plains.
02:06Compare what it was like back to in early June.
02:08But it's amazing how much degradation there's been in this drought monitor
02:14from the plain states to the eastern U.S.
02:17And unfortunately, this is going to get worse before it gets better, Bernie,
02:20given the pattern that we're in.
02:21Yeah, let's take a look at the pattern.
02:23But boy, that's a big change.
02:24Isn't it, though?
02:25Since we've gone through the summertime.
02:27All right, dip in the jet stream we're seeing in in the west now.
02:30We'll see it next week as well.
02:32Yeah, there's a busy weather map here.
02:34This is the trough that's going to drive the front from the plain states early in the week
02:38off the eastern seaboard by Wednesday night and early Thursday.
02:40So there'll be a quick little band of showers.
02:43You get a quarter to a half an inch of rain, maybe a little more in some places,
02:45and then it's gone at several more days of dry weather.
02:48It rapidly warms up behind it.
02:50Yeah, there's a couple of days of cool air, but then it's back into the 70s,
02:53maybe some 80s in the plain states.
02:55Cooler weather for the northwest, maybe late in the week and next weekend.
02:58Some moisture can come out of the tropics for the southwest,
03:01something we'll be keeping an eye on.
03:02All right, AccuWeather long-range expert Joe Lumberg at Crystal Ball.
03:06He'll join us again at 9.15.
