00:00Ke and Bo are just having a little playful tussle day together.
00:13What the hell?
00:15A male leopard is stalking Cheetah Mom Pobbe and her cubs.
00:21Move, Pobbe, move.
00:24You need to move your cubs.
00:26He's right behind you, move.
00:30I have no idea.
00:41The Okavango Delta in Botswana.
00:45We are in a pristine environment right now.
00:48One of Africa's last wildernesses.
00:51The magnitude of life here is unparalleled.
00:54And it's a haven for Africa's big cats.
00:59Lion, cheetah and leopard.
01:04Big cat country.
01:06Armed with the latest filming technology, the Big Cats 2417 is following individual big cats for six months.
01:17This is a unique opportunity to follow these cats round the clock.
01:22Through the day.
01:24I used to think I'd have a fair fight with a lion.
01:27Not so sure now.
01:29And the night.
01:31We've got the most sophisticated thermal imaging technologies.
01:36Capturing their behavior.
01:3824 hours a day.
01:40I have never seen anything like this.
01:43Epic!
01:44This program was made possible in part by...
01:57Irene Catherine Joseph Buczynski.
02:03And by contributions to your PBS station from viewers like you.
02:09Mom.
02:10He's on a curb.
02:11He's on a curb.
02:12He's on a curb.
02:13He's on a curb.
02:14Come on, Bobby.
02:15Bobby's trying to swipe him there.
02:16Bobby's chased off the leopard.
02:17Leopard has moved away.
02:42Leopard has moved away.
02:44Cheetah cop down.
02:51Cheetah cop down.
02:53Cheetah cop down.
02:57In the looks of things, it might be Kia.
03:02Yeah, that's bull.
03:05I think the leopard killed Kia.
03:09Kia, Bobby's female cub, is gone.
03:13The size of Beau and Kia now, you assume they're safe.
03:20But...
03:22Yeah, you never know what to expect.
03:26That's really unfair.
03:32Kia was the one that was always the most wild and boisterous.
03:40And incredibly competitive.
03:45And she's gone.
03:49And now Beau isn't going to have his sister showing him what to do all the time.
03:55Cheetah team.
03:56Cheetah team.
03:57It was a terrible loss.
04:01I don't think any of us expected this to happen today, but...
04:06Yeah, it is.
04:07It is tough.
04:08The leopard remains a threat.
04:14Hope has no choice.
04:15To keep Beau safe, she must leave.
04:24It doesn't feel right to stay here, I don't think.
04:27So I want to give them some time alone.
04:31The news has reached camp.
04:48Oh, Rhea.
04:50I don't know what to say.
04:55This is a horrible day.
04:57The team is working in 400 square kilometers of the Okavango Delta.
05:15Summer is approaching, and the flood is drying up.
05:25Aggressive intruder males have forced the Khudam Maams to retreat far to the south.
05:33But in the north...
05:34Oh, there they are.
05:36A splinter group of the Pride's youngest lionesses has remained and must survive on its own.
05:44Okay, girls.
05:46Gordon is following them.
05:48We've got the females without clubs.
05:50Trying to hunt zebra up here.
05:56This is going to get rather interesting.
06:03Whoa.
06:06That was close.
06:14The lionesses in front of me, they are around about three or four years old.
06:23And they've formed this little subgroup or splinter of the Khudam Pride.
06:29They are the daughters of Big Toe and Madumo.
06:34They are the sort of equivalent of carefree teenagers.
06:40They are the only ones that haven't moved out of the historic sort of heart of the territory,
06:46where all these intruder males are coming in.
06:49For any female with cubs, that is a concern.
06:55There's danger.
06:56There is threat to the cubs.
06:57For these cubless females, there's no threat or concern.
07:03They see them as an opportunity to breed, to have cubs, to be a mum.
07:09It will be really interesting to follow these females.
07:11If there is to be a split in the Khudam Pride, it could well happen with them.
07:21The one is going to be the one.
07:22The one is going to be a lioness.
07:23Gordon for Anna.
07:24Closed by.
07:25I've just seen movement coming from the base of a termite mound.
07:31With no sign of Pobe and Bo after the leopard attack, Anna is joining the lion team.
07:36I'm just going to check out who is there. Who is that?
07:47OK, that's a lioness.
07:49Shall we know? What are you doing?
07:57Oh, my God.
08:00She's got a cub. I can see a cub.
08:03No, there's two. There's two cubs.
08:07Oh, wow, they are tiny.
08:12Oh, they're adorable. They're so small.
08:18Oh, they are so unsteady on our feet.
08:21They must be, like, two or three weeks old.
08:24I have never seen cubs this size.
08:29That is Cerami.
08:33I would recognize that tail anywhere.
08:37It's, like, slightly white, and she's missing the tip.
08:42Well done, Cerami.
08:46Oh, this is the best news.
08:49Cerami is the first of the splinter group lionesses to breed.
08:53As far as I'm aware, we don't know who Cerami has mated with.
09:00We've got intruder males running about left, right and centre.
09:04So, there's a high chance that one of those lions could be the dad of these cubs.
09:13But which one it is, is anybody's guess.
09:17I don't know why she's chosen here, of all places, to den.
09:24It's really exposed.
09:27There's a high amount of traffic coming through because we've got water on both sides.
09:32It just doesn't really feel like the right place to have cubs that are only two or three weeks old.
09:42First time mum Cerami has a lot to learn.
09:46I can't imagine how difficult the next few weeks and months are going to be for her.
09:53So, I'm going to stick with her because I think it's going to be a tricky time.
10:07What have we got here?
10:09It's a female. She has a dreadlock on her face.
10:20So, I think that this is actually Nelo, Pobe's daughter.
10:27Nelo is from Pobe's previous litter.
10:31She's been independent from Pobe for about a year.
10:34And it's amazing. This would have been the toughest year for her.
10:37But she's looking really well.
10:41Pobe may have lost Kea.
10:44But Nelo is proof of her previous success.
10:48Greg, Greg, Greg, Greg.
10:50Ready.
10:52When you are.
10:54Look in front. We just found Nelo.
10:58It brings quite the joy to see Nelo.
11:02She's just a bit over three years old.
11:04Still very playful.
11:07Oh, she's playing with the elephant poo.
11:13It's really cool that Nelo still hangs around close to Pobe here.
11:18This is where she grew up.
11:21She's definitely not had a meal.
11:23She'll be hoping to bump into any food here.
11:24Nelo looks to be on the move.
11:26Copy that, right?
11:28Nelo has just spotted a big group of impalas.
11:30Nelo has just spotted a big group of impalas.
11:33Nelo has just spotted a big group of impalas.
11:36Very large herd of impalas here approaching directly to Nelo who's at the top of a termite mound.
11:39Nelo looks to be on the move.
11:43Copy that, right?
11:45Nelo has just spotted a big group of impalas.
11:49Very large herd of impalas here approaching directly to Nelo who's at the top of a termite mound staring at them.
12:06I have a feeling Nelo is waiting for the majority of the herd to come past her before she makes her move.
12:16I'm going to send Mitch up with the drone.
12:20I think this could be the best chance Nelo will have today.
12:23It's crazy, the amount of impalas on the way.
12:28This might be it.
12:30I think they've picked up a scent there, started to run.
12:37Nelo's going for it.
12:41Awful tilt.
12:45She's trying to trip it.
12:49Plenty of dust just behind her.
13:06So just grab her by the neck now.
13:23She's done it.
13:24She needs to relax, breathe, get the oxygen back in her body.
13:35She didn't just burst out, she waited, chose which impalas she wanted.
13:41She's clearly a very independent cheetah, very capable.
13:44Nelo's survival is not only about catching a meal, it's about keeping it too.
13:54Nelo's just dragging this impala kill into the shade, which may help reduce vultures.
14:03She's had a great amount of this meal.
14:08She's going to be good for the next couple of days.
14:13It's amazing to see this young cheetah surviving and thriving here in the Okavango.
14:19Only 5% of cheetahs make it to this stage in life.
14:23Nelo is proof that Boba is a fantastic mother and there's still a lot of hope for both.
14:34Maybe we're here to scratch it a little bit wider in the same zone.
14:39Yeah, come on.
14:41Brad is searching for Ladiba the leopard and her five-month-old cub.
14:45Here, I've got her here.
14:49You have a beautiful view of everything around her.
14:57She's looking skinny again.
15:00It's been 10 days now since she's had a real sort of settled meal that she can really feed on.
15:07It's a stressful time.
15:09Dominant male leopard Bongwe remains in the area, providing stability for Ladiba.
15:18But her cub now needs two pounds of meat per day.
15:22Please, Ladiba, it's time to be successful.
15:26It's still too young to hunt, so Ladiba is under pressure to provide for them both.
15:38This is where she's drinking.
15:40It's a little seep.
15:42The flood is drying up, but this hole provides access to ground water.
15:49She's got a bird.
15:52Obviously, she surprised a bird that was drinking and a black-collared barber came out and she grabbed it.
16:01That's just remarkable.
16:03I've never seen a leopard deliberately kill something so small to eat.
16:06This is rare.
16:09Birds make up just 1% of leopard diets.
16:12Learning a lot about Ladiba's character.
16:19Her catching birds is probably enough to sustain her.
16:23But for the cub, she's going to be under increasing pressure to actually provide kills.
16:29And the pressure is going to melt.
16:31So, this is a win for her, but not for the entire family.
16:39Brad, Brad for Tristan.
16:42Tristan is with Ladiba's cub.
16:46Brad, yeah. I'm losing light this side.
16:48Do you want to come in with the...
16:50...imaging camera.
16:52She's in our way.
16:54Ladiba is returning empty-handed.
16:57Brad's going to start to follow these guys into the night and see what they get up to.
17:02Adiba is just flat on the Timoth Mountain, above where the cub is.
17:13She's been really struggling.
17:18She's only been eating small things, not enough to give to the cub.
17:21The cub has come and joined, and you can see as she lies, there's a ring of heat around her paws and her nose and her face, and she's just slowly resting.
17:38I would never have guessed that leopards and cubs at that stage are that intimate.
17:48Quite an incredible thing to see.
17:55This is leopards at their best, and as far as I'm concerned, at their cutest.
18:00Greg, Greg for Anna.
18:02With Pabe and Bo still missing, Anna is checking on new lion mum, Cerami.
18:06We are with a group of lionesses in really close proximity to the den.
18:14I'm on the way to you now, I'll be there in about five minutes.
18:16Some of the splinter group has joined her.
18:25How are they so close? Why are they so close?
18:30I'm on the way to you now, I'll be there in about five minutes.
18:35Some of the splinter group has joined her.
18:39How are they so close? Why are they so close?
18:43Oh, the cubs are with them.
18:50This is so bizarre.
18:54Normally mums don't introduce their cubs to the rest of the pride
18:59until they're six to eight weeks old.
19:03Those cubs are still tiny.
19:06Sarami shouldn't be introducing her cubs to any other lions
19:10when they're this little.
19:13The only time that I would really expect there to be other lionesses around cubs this small
19:19would be if they also had cubs themselves and they were alloparenting,
19:23but these lionesses don't have any cubs.
19:28So this feels really dangerous.
19:32With so many intruder males in the area
19:35and no indication of who their father is,
19:39these cubs are vulnerable.
19:43Cerami.
19:45It's definitely doing things differently.
19:47My goodness me, I think the cubs are very hungry.
19:57At three weeks old, lion cubs should suckle every four to six hours.
20:02What? Something happened there that she didn't like.
20:05They tried to suckle from mum, but mum got uncomfortable and has left them.
20:14It's now almost 12 hours since the crew last saw the cubs feed.
20:20Going now to the auntie to try and suckle,
20:23and obviously auntie can't help them with anything.
20:28Cerami is the only mother in this group of females,
20:31so these cubs only have one possible suckling opportunity.
20:35Oh, goodness me, what the heck?
20:39This lioness is really not loving these cubs.
20:45Wow!
20:47This is another auntie who's growling at these cubs.
20:53What's wrong?
20:56There's absolutely no way in now.
21:01Cerami seems to want a break from her cubs.
21:05Oh, I feel for them.
21:07They're just waiting on the outskirts, waiting to just have a chance to drink.
21:14One of the cubs has got the nerve to come in here.
21:16He's trying to get close to mum.
21:19And this lioness is just fully aggro.
21:25And that just shouts an experience.
21:27It shows to me that this lioness and the others
21:30have not had much time around cubs at all.
21:34With no other kudum pride mums to learn from.
21:39Come on, come on, cubo.
21:41All I want to see is a cub latch onto her teeth and drink.
21:45Cerami is struggling to find her feet.
21:48The cubs seem confused.
21:52I think these two cubs have been introduced
21:55to other female lions too early.
21:58And they may not be able to recognize which lioness is mum.
22:04And which of these lionesses is not.
22:10They don't know who mum is.
22:19She's just sneaking into this forest.
22:22Ladiba has stashed her cub and is hunting again.
22:26This elephant's browsing here, making a hell of a noise.
22:37And she's kind of using that.
22:40Leopards will use distractions from other animals
22:44to get closer to prey.
22:45I don't know what she's seen, but it's something of interest.
22:50The only thing I can see is elephants.
22:57She's after monkeys.
22:58That's what she's after.
22:59After rabbits.
23:01Having still not caught anything big enough to share with her cub.
23:05This is how desperate she's getting.
23:08Ladiba is going for something small again.
23:12She has climbed into the tree with all these vervets.
23:16And she's jumping from branch to branch in the treetops.
23:19Trying to catch a vervet out of a monkey out of a tree.
23:22Showing her unbelievable agility and frustration, I guess.
23:26Just chaos, absolute chaos.
23:33It's not typical prey for her, but, you know, she's really, really hungry.
23:40Incredible climbing ability.
23:42You don't see it until these leopards are in full chase way out in the trees.
23:48She's just really going too extreme to have a go at anything she can.
24:09Trust in Brad?
24:11Got a bit of a stalemate.
24:13Brad's camera is struggling in the fading light.
24:15It's a bit too dark, so we're going to switch the thermal imaging camera and just try to keep up.
24:20So he's calling in Tristan to help.
24:25Getting down?
24:31She's on the ground.
24:33OK, cool, copy that.
24:35Yeah, I'm on my way.
24:45It's heading towards that forest.
24:52Oh, my God.
24:55The divas just managed to kill a monkey.
24:58It happened while we were rigging the thermal camera.
25:02It's very, very impressive.
25:05I've never actually seen a leopard catch one on the floor, though, before.
25:10So this is quite new to me.
25:11I think we're starting to really understand a lot more about this particular cat.
25:17It's just the first leopard that I've seen in this area that is so specifically focused on small prey species.
25:25We're learning.
25:28We're learning.
25:29We're learning about the divas.
25:32I'm very, very happy for her, and it's a decent-sized meal.
25:36But I doubt the cubs will be able to get anything off this, and they're going to probably still be hungry tonight.
25:42Sets, Sets for Greg.
25:49At Cerami's den.
25:51These poor cubs have been trying their best to get a drink.
25:54His aunties have been trying a grip.
25:57Are you free to take over?
25:59Hey, Greg, copy that here.
26:02They need to drink more.
26:04Sets and Gordon are starting the night shift.
26:07I'll let you know how it goes in the morning.
26:08Oh, big yawn.
26:17Mine's so cute.
26:22Lionesses, they are up and looks like they're going to look for some fruit for the evening.
26:27Cerami must leave the cubs unprotected to go hunt.
26:33She's looking a bit skinny.
26:36And that's not good for her or the cubs.
26:39So getting something to eat tonight won't do her.
26:42And the cubs are good.
26:46River note.
26:48Woo-hoo!
26:49Hey, Gordon.
26:50The lionesses are stalking towards some lechway in the floodplain.
27:05OK, yeah.
27:07I've got them.
27:09Adapted to water, even experienced lions struggle to catch lechway.
27:14The lionesses have split into two roots of two.
27:18This is an example of lions working together, using stealth, but also using strategy.
27:29That is amazing.
27:32She is up to her knees at the moment.
27:44To walk through the water without being detected is a real challenge.
27:49Oh, they're going for it.
27:50Oh, panic.
27:51Panic amongst all of these lechway.
27:52The strategy is to push the lechway into the oncoming lionesses.
28:07They really went for it.
28:12Teased from way too far.
28:16But it was a good attempt.
28:18But Sarami is not giving up.
28:21Look at that.
28:23She's just like a crocodile lying away there.
28:28She is completely submerged in the water.
28:31She's up to her chin.
28:32As long as she can hear those lechway moving around her, there's no vision to move.
28:42I'm impressed.
28:43This is pure maternal determination.
28:50Oh, lion running, running, running, running, running.
28:53Oh, one of them's in the water.
28:56Oh, my God.
28:57She's got a goose.
28:59She's got a goose.
29:00Crazy, crazy, crazy.
29:04Oh, my words.
29:06In all the commotion, Sarami has got nothing.
29:12A goose will barely feed one of them.
29:16I've lost everyone.
29:19They've crossed over the water yet again.
29:22But in a place where we can't follow.
29:27Looks like this is it for tonight.
29:28This is it for tonight.
29:39Gordon, Gordon for Greg.
29:41After losing the lionesses in the night.
29:44We might do a loop up towards the den.
29:46Copy that.
29:48Gordon and Greg.
29:49Where are you?
29:50Where are you?
29:51Are searching for them.
29:54Oh, wow.
29:56This is really quite interesting because we've got one of Bigtou Madumo's daughters with a strange male.
30:04It's one of Sarami's splinter group.
30:06He is a big boy.
30:11He's a blondie.
30:13I'm going to call him Golden Boy because of his mane.
30:22A male and a female hanging out like this can only mean one thing, that they're a courting couple.
30:28That they're going to mate.
30:31Golden Boy is the latest intruder male making himself at home in the Kudum Pride territory.
30:39As sad as it is to think that Bigtou Madumo's time at the top is coming to an end.
30:44In many ways it's exciting because there are other males that are going to step in that will become the pride males of the Kudum Pride.
30:53Someone like him.
30:55He might be a rising star.
30:56He certainly looks as if he's made from the right stuff.
31:00But Golden Boy's presence.
31:03Big, strong, handsome.
31:05It's obviously working on this female.
31:07Could be a danger to Sarami's cubs.
31:10If he's not their father.
31:19The address is covered here.
31:26The Deba is high up in an ebony tree that's fruiting.
31:31To feed her cub, La Deba's changing her tactics.
31:37The fruiting trees play such a big role in this area.
31:41Ebony fruits full of sugar, lots of protein.
31:44And when they're dropping their fruits, everything that's utilizing them.
31:49There's a herd of impala rams that are breaking their way down, picking up the fallen fruit.
31:55Between them and the Deba.
31:57She's using the fruit as bait.
32:00And that focused activity from the ebony tree to ebony tree is pattern that these leopards have figured out.
32:09To conserve energy, leopards often wait for prey to come to them.
32:14I haven't seen La Deba jump onto an impala from a tree yet.
32:20Let's hope she doesn't injure herself.
32:23And let's hope these impala get to her tree.
32:26La Deba's taking a risk to catch larger prey.
32:32It's just a waiting game.
32:33It's now 1.15 in the afternoon.
32:49Over six hours have passed.
32:52She's been in this tree the whole time.
32:55And just patience, patience, patience.
32:58La Deba's still eyes fixated on the impalas coming down the tree line towards her.
33:09Now we've got a single ram.
33:12He's now closest that we've had to her.
33:17This ram is completely unaware of La Deba and the tree above him.
33:21And we've got a single ram.
33:27My heart is pounding onto my chest right now.
33:32She must be eight, nine meters off the ground.
33:37It's about positioning.
33:39So she doesn't impale herself on those horns.
33:42A mistake here could be fatal.
33:46He's directly underneath her.
33:47Come on dude, little bum wiggle.
33:53Here we go.
34:07No way.
34:18Unlucky.
34:20Unlucky.
34:21Sorry Michael.
34:24I feel so sorry for her.
34:27She needed that.
34:29Spent all that time waiting.
34:33La Deba moves on empty handed.
34:38You know it's dangerous doing something from that height.
34:40If she falls weirdly or something happens, it could spell the end for her.
34:44The den was moved a little bit further to the east.
35:00Greg has found Cerami.
35:03Who's moved her cubs closer to the flood.
35:05So our new lion mum and her cubs with a couple of the lionesses.
35:18We're just resting in the shade.
35:20Being nearer the water is cooler for the lionesses.
35:24My goodness gracious me.
35:27But Cerami's siblings are still stopping the cubs from suckling.
35:33Oh.
35:35Oh my word, this is not good.
35:37And resting here exposes them to a new danger.
35:42A weak elephant is a potential prey for a lion.
35:45So elephants do not like to share any space with lions.
35:54Something tells me that those little lion cubs do not have the legs on them to outrun an elephant.
36:00This is a particularly dangerous situation for the cubs.
36:05This family of elephants out matches Cerami and the other lionesses.
36:12Okay, our mums are pulling out.
36:16They're leaving the cubs behind.
36:18There's nothing that Cerami can do here against the elephants.
36:22Oh my goodness, he just threw a branch.
36:27Very aggressive behaviour from the elephant.
36:33Elephants have been known to kill lion cubs.
36:37Oh, the cubs are super scared.
36:42The lionesses, I think they want to charge in and push the ellies.
36:48Okay, one cub has run into this tall grass.
36:51But there's one cub who's completely isolated.
36:59What?
37:01Oh, get out of there, little cub.
37:05Nerves of steel from the lion cub.
37:12Went straight past the cub.
37:16My jungle hat, that is nuts.
37:22There's the cub.
37:23Okay, cubby is up.
37:25Oh, these cubs are doing the right thing.
37:28The cub's instinct to hide is kicking in.
37:32Don't cry now, little lion cub, because now you're going to draw attention.
37:40Just one angry elephant with one foot and there goes your lion cub.
37:51Cubs are somewhere in this tall fire grass.
38:04Yes, the ellies are moving away.
38:09I think the danger is past.
38:11That was so close.
38:15People think that lions are in charge on the African savannah, but that is not the case.
38:26Elephants are in charge.
38:27Unbelievable.
38:45What a rollercoaster of an afternoon for these cubs.
38:47Such survivance.
38:50Oh, finally.
38:54So good.
38:56Both of the cubs are having a drink.
38:59This is what the cubs need.
39:01That's fantastic.
39:04It's really surprising and amazing to see that these cubs have such strong survival instincts.
39:10To move away from the elephants and knowing what to do in the time of extreme danger.
39:15At this age, every day is a victory.
39:16So today was a victory, but only just.
39:17Today was a victory, but only just.
39:46You hear it?
39:47Yeah.
39:48Brad is looking for Ladiba the leopard.
39:50Let's go.
39:54We've got lions, ahina's fighting, so I would get another camera archer.
40:00Copy that.
40:06Heard all this commotion on the edge of the floodplain, and I've got Sarami and her sisters on a kill,
40:12and a whole bunch of hyenas trying to steal it from her.
40:17Leaving her cubs at the den, Sarami and the splinter group have finally caught a meal.
40:23These lionesses must have killed us early hours of the morning,
40:27and now they're being mobbed.
40:31There's an interesting equation to these kind of interactions.
40:34It's based on weight.
40:36Three hyenas weighs the same as one lioness.
40:38We've got four lionesses here, so we'll need 12 hyenas before a real battle starts.
40:46Despite their immaturity, these young females are keeping their food.
40:53Part of the tactic of hyenas is making a huge racket.
40:56And essentially it's calling to arms.
41:00And if there's any hyenas with an earshot of this, they're going to come in.
41:04I hope they hold on to it.
41:07Sarami's really been struggling, and she's a new mom.
41:10And if she doesn't get fed, her milk will start to dry, and that's not good for her cubs.
41:16They just mustn't fall for the intimidation.
41:18Don't, don't do that at all.
41:20You see, the minute one pulls away from the rest of the tribe, those hyenas just see the weakness.
41:29They just target her.
41:31It's amazing, you know, they'll walk within a couple of meters and literally just stand.
41:35I mean, if I was a lioness, I wouldn't be liking this.
41:38Mmm, the saingles are getting ballsy.
41:46Here we come.
41:55The lions are starting to move away, led by our new mum.
42:00Finally outnumbered, the lionesses are leaving, but with full bellies.
42:06Sarami at least had a decent feed.
42:10And food for Sarami means more milk for her cubs.
42:21Bird for Tristan.
42:23It's been two weeks since the team saw Ladiba catch a large meal.
42:27Looks like the school's definitely just going on a bit of a march today.
42:31Okay, covered.
42:33Ladiba's just seen some impala.
42:36Looks like she's going to go and try hide in the long grass and get into a position where she can ambush.
42:39This is pretty much do or die now.
42:41Ladiba must feed her cub.
42:42Ladiba must feed her cub.
42:43Just lost complete visual.
42:44But I mean, if I can't see her, I doubt that the impala can see her.
42:45Ladiba's just seen some impala.
42:49Looks like she's going to go and try hide in the long grass and get into a position where she can ambush.
42:54.
42:55This is pretty much do or die now.
43:01.
43:04Ladiba must feed her cub.
43:06Just lost complete visual, but.
43:09I mean, if I can't see her, I doubt that the impala can see her, so..
43:13I've planned this so, so well.
43:40She got one!
43:41Come on!
43:44You are an absolute beauty!
43:49La Diba did it!
43:51Weighing nearly 150 pounds.
43:54Unbelievable.
43:56An impala ram will feed La Diba and her cub for several days.
44:00Amazing, amazing, amazing.
44:03It's so good for her.
44:06The cub for her is the best possible way to end the day for La Diba.
44:13The impalas have such big horns.
44:18And it looks like it's managed to just clip her slightly, but she looks fine, luckily.
44:23But yeah.
44:25Oh, she just used all of her abilities to the max there.
44:29Hid, waited for the impala to come to her, and now she's got an amazing meal for her family.
44:34What a superstar.
44:36Very keen on keeping this kill as hidden as possible.
44:47La Diba's calling properly now, so this cub's got to be in here.
44:51Ah, hello!
44:52The cubby's arrived.
44:53Going in for a cuddle.
44:54It's always really nice, just seeing the family really nice and seeing how happy they are together.
45:08Mum gets to give this cub a little treat.
45:09Looks like we're all on the move now.
45:10Mum's taking the cub into the kill.
45:14This cub's got a long way to go, and a lot of things to learn, and that's what La Diba's
45:16going to be trying to teach her.
45:17This cub's got a long way to go, and a lot of things to learn.
45:18And that's what La Diba's going to be trying to teach it.
45:39and a lot of things to learn
45:41and that's what Ladiba
45:43is going to be trying to teach it.
45:46But the most important thing right now
45:49is that it gets a good meal
45:51and continues to grow.
45:54And mum's managed to provide that today.
45:57Greg has picked up Golden Boy,
46:14the latest intruder in the area.
46:17His meals are just in the floodplain
46:19south of Kudu Crossing.
46:21He's been joined by his coalition partner.
46:24So, pretty close to where the den is.
46:27This is a mature coalition of males.
46:30We don't know them very well,
46:32but they are starting to become
46:34quite a lot more present
46:36in the Kudun Pride Territory.
46:38They're resting close to Sarami's den.
46:42Greg, Greg, I've got them.
46:45Yep.
46:47That is Golden Boy.
46:50They are only about 150 metres
46:53from the last known location of Sarami.
46:56We had two new cubs.
46:57So, this feels really dangerous.
47:00If neither male's the father,
47:03the cubs are in danger.
47:09The cubs are here,
47:12but Sarami's not,
47:14and she hasn't been seen at the den for 24 hours now.
47:20And I'm getting fairly stressed,
47:21because if Golden Boy and his coalition partner
47:25catch scent of these two cubs,
47:27there is a very big chance it's going to kill them.
47:31I'm having issues getting this thermal camera going.
47:43Two hours have passed.
47:45Sarami is still not back.
47:47The cubs are still on their own.
47:49I have a feeling there's something wrong with one of the cables.
47:53I've already called them to camp,
47:54so they're bringing a replacement,
47:55but I'm just stressed that something's going to happen.
47:59Anna, look at him.
48:00Golden Boy's on his way.
48:02Did you say the Golden Boy's coming now?
48:04With the thermal camera out of action.
48:07I'm just going to have to use this for the moment, I think.
48:09Anna's using her spotting scope instead to locate the males.
48:14Oh, my God, they're walking straight this way.
48:17No, no, no.
48:21Stay there, cubs, don't move.
48:27Oh, my.
48:29They're only, like, 30 metres from the den at this point.
48:38I can see some letchway.
48:41Oh, please be distracted.
48:45OK.
48:46They are looking in the direction of the letchway at the moment.
48:51Oh, OK, I've just lost them behind a tailwind mound.
48:55Anna, Anna, for Mitch.
48:56We approach with the new thermal camera.
48:59Nice.
49:01We're in.
49:02We're in.
49:06Ah, OK, we're back in action.
49:12What's up, Ben?
49:15Ah, great, OK.
49:20These cubs are bulletproof.
49:23They're moving away.
49:25They are moving away.
49:31They are moving away.
49:34I cannot believe that.
49:37Those cubs have had such a lucky escape.
49:42Sir Amin used to come back because that was way too close for comfort.
49:47I cannot believe it.
50:00Night shift is ending.
50:01I've got Golden Boy and his coalition partner heading in the direction of Sir Amin's den here.
50:07No, no, no.
50:08But the two male lions have circled back
50:14That is that's golden boy, it's going straight towards it then
50:18I'm gonna have to stick on the fellow Anna has no time to switch to her daylight camera
50:25Oh my gosh little guys
50:28This is gonna be potentially tragic
50:30We have no idea who dad is if the father is not golden boy, this could be the end of these little cubs
50:40If he isn't the dad I cannot watch another cat kill a cub again
50:47They're just at the base of that little tree
50:51Okay golden boy is coming towards the den here
50:56They're not hidden they're completely obvious
51:00What the hell is the army the cubs have literally zero protection right now
51:09Golden boy is gonna see these cubs in a second
51:23Oh
51:25My word
51:27Golden boy is hesitating
51:35Fully grown males rarely see cubs this small
51:39The cubs are panicking one of the cubs is heading behind the trunk
51:44The other cub is shuffled off up the trunk of this tree
51:47What's going on?
51:49What's going on?
51:57I don't know if it's curiosity or he actually does want to cause harm
52:04One cub is hiding
52:07But golden boy is following the other
52:10The fact that cub is so small might be the biggest blessing
52:17the fact that that cub is so small might be the biggest blessing because it's managed to get
52:36itself all the way up on the tree and that's the one place that baldingwood can't get because it's
52:43far too bad to get out there the cubs have escaped danger again
52:53he's pulled back
52:56goodness gracious i was not expecting that i thought he was going to munch them
53:03the fact that he didn't go for them i think he could be the dad
53:09and if so that means that intruder males really are infiltrating they couldn't pride
53:19gordon is joining anna and greg oh my gosh quite the situation what is going to happen here
53:32the one at the bottom is calling for the one who's at the top of the tree which is encouraging it to
53:37come down
53:42he looks so vulnerable up there
53:47i just worried oh it's just playing on
53:52oh little guy that's a long way to fall
53:59come on come on you're so close
54:01it'll just be so low on energy as well because we've not seen their mum feeding them recently
