04:19Oh my god, look at that
04:20That is one heck of a house
04:23A tented structure
04:29Is the last thing I expected to see
04:32On this weather-beaten island
04:34But there's clearly a story behind it
04:38And I'm hoping owner Simon
04:40Can help me understand the method
04:42Behind the madness
04:44Simon
04:46George, welcome
04:47Very nice to meet you
04:48How are you?
04:49Yeah, I'm pleased to meet you sir
04:50I'm great, thanks, how are you?
04:51I'm very, very, very happy to be here
04:52Welcome to the Opera House
04:54Looks like it's landed from outer space
04:56It's so futuristic
04:57It is quite unusual, isn't it?
05:02Company director Simon
05:04And his young family
05:05Acquired this unconventional holiday home
05:08Post-build in 2010
05:11A two-bedroom, two-bathroom build
05:14With one very intriguing backstory
05:20I mean, that is one incredible position
05:23To look at the building
05:24It's curve after curve after curve
05:26Yeah
05:31The architect, Greg Noble
05:33He originally was a great admirer
05:35Of Native North American architecture
05:36And his original sketches of this
05:38Were of a teepee-like structure
05:40Oh really?
05:41So hence the use of an endoskeleton
05:44Plus it has a riv up here
05:45With the solar panels on top
05:47With the solar panels on top
05:48As you can see it's a complete tension structure
05:54So these stainless steel wire ropes down here
05:56Are integral to the structure
05:58Yeah, if you cut those cables
05:59The whole thing would kind of pop back
06:00Wouldn't it?
06:01Yeah, a lot of people do ask
06:02Well does it open up like that?
06:04I know I'm only in emergency
06:05But that's not a good thing
06:07Did it take long to build?
06:09Well I think a lot of the time and effort was in the original fabrication
06:14Yeah
06:15Those ribs, they were manufactured in Wellington
06:18They put it together three or four times down there
06:20Before they put it on a barge
06:22Oh really?
06:23Yeah
06:24When it actually came on site
06:25My understanding is it only took four days
06:27To put the tensioned structure in place
06:30That's pretty amazing
06:32Yeah
06:33Did you just think
06:34I need to have that?
06:35Yeah
06:36Did you fall in love with this straight away?
06:37Yeah, we bought it on the same day
06:38Did you?
06:39Did you?
06:40Basically, yeah
06:44I mean today's a very calm, beautiful, warm day
06:47But this building must have to really withstand the elements through the year
06:50Yeah, absolutely
06:51So if you go east from here, there's not much between here and Chile
06:55So when the storms come in from the east, there's a lot of fetch
06:57And they can be massive storms
06:59Sounds brutal
07:00It is brutal at times, yeah
07:02And I call it atmospheric salt
07:04You get a lot of foam and spray and what have you that basically comes in
07:09And that's why you've really got to maintain your places out here
07:12Because salt, you know, obviously is the great destroyer
07:16Have you ever been inside it when it's been buttered?
07:18Yeah, absolutely
07:19It's good fun
07:20It's good fun
07:21It's good fun
07:22Yeah
07:23I love the positivity
07:24There's plenty of noise and there's lots of board games
07:27It's just spectacular
07:28Yeah
07:29Love it
07:37Can we go inside now?
07:38Yeah, please
07:39Come take a look
07:40It's one of the most unique houses I've ever seen
07:54Very, very clever piece of elegant structural design

14:20I love this house so much
14:22It's a testament to architectural ingenuity
14:25Engineering precision
14:27And it demonstrates brave, bold design thinking
14:31On a remote wild island
14:33Standing guard off New Zealand's eastern coastline
14:48Is the stunningly unspoiled oasis
14:50That is Great Barrier Island
14:53And settled among these vistas
14:57There are some wonderfully eccentric
14:59And eclectic characters
15:01It's busy
15:05From all over the world
15:09Hi, are you all there?
15:12Hello, George, how are you?
15:14Lovely to meet you, how are you?
15:16I'm very welcome
15:16Oh, this is great
15:17Oh, thank you
15:18What a wonderful pub
15:20What we love about it is that it's the real McCoy
15:22You know, it could be the kind of pub you'd find
15:24In any little town and village in Ireland
15:26And this used to be a house?
15:27Is that right?
15:28Yeah
15:28It's probably the oldest house on the island
15:31From when, do you think?
15:32Built around 1890
15:331890?
15:341890?
15:34Yes
15:34So I think with these old buildings
15:36You're merely the custodian for your time with them
15:38Absolutely
15:39And you just try and elevate them
15:41And pass them on in good shape
15:42Absolutely
15:43Well, I can't wait to find out your story
15:45Yeah, it's a good story
15:46Can I have a pint of Guinness?
15:47Certainly
15:48I'd love to pour you a pint of Guinness
15:49An Irish pub isn't just a place to enjoy your pint
15:54It's a cornerstone of community life
15:57And as the head publican
16:00Ola has a responsibility
16:02To uphold the integrity
16:04Of those rich Irish traditions
16:06And with all our clients
16:10We can get a little shamrock on the top
16:12Look at that, it's a little shamrock
16:13Soon the day the world will come
16:17With a drink of sugar and tea and rum
16:20One day when the talking is done
16:22The day he'll be let go
16:24How in the middle did you arrive on Great Barrier?
16:31I was on holidays in Bermuda
16:33Visiting a friend of mine
16:34And I met this New Zealand boat builder
16:36And he told me about this wonderful paradise island
16:39That was the most beautiful place in the world
16:41And I said well I better go and have a look
16:43And you came here
16:44About 25 years ago
16:46And I've lived most of my life here
16:49On Great Barrier since
16:50It's an unusual kind of place
16:52Very few of us have extended connections here
16:56So therefore it's a very special little community
16:59Everybody looks out for everybody
17:00They're fabulous
17:01And you know if somebody had told me that I would live on an off-grid island
17:05Without power or running water or mod cons
17:09I would have said you've got to be joking
17:10But it was a big change
17:12But I loved it
17:13Off-grid, running a pub
17:15Totally off-grid
17:16How does that work?
17:17We are actually the only solar-powered Irish pub in the world
17:20Is that official?
17:21That's official
17:22Our neighbour, Peter Blackwell
17:25Who is one of the pioneering families
17:27And he's made this incredible investment
17:29To create a little mini-grid
17:31And he supplies us with power
17:33On a busy night
17:37We feed up to 300 people a night here
17:39So it's a busy pub
17:40In the past we would have run a big smelly diesel generator
17:43For 16 or 18 hours a day
17:45Now what you hear is
17:46You can hear the cacas
17:51You see the bird life
17:52You see, you know, all kinds of things happening here
17:55It's really amazing
17:56It's a wonderful collaboration
17:58So if the power runs out
18:01And the Guinness is rubbish
18:02It's his fault
18:04It's definitely not mine
18:06I love that
18:08Well thanks for sharing that story
18:09That's fantastic
18:10You're welcome
18:10And we should definitely toast the fact
18:12That you are the only off-grid
18:14Solar-powered Irish pub
18:16In the world
18:17In the world
18:18That's it
18:18Drink to that
18:19Cheers
18:20Cheers
18:20Before the luxuries of tap beers and solar panels
18:29People out here were living off the land
18:32Settling in areas like Tryphena
18:36The location of my next wild home
18:40Years ago this island was established as a place
18:46Where people could escape their normal life
18:49Unplug and go off-grid
18:51That still remains true today
18:53I'm about to meet Roger
18:55A long-term resident who did just that
18:58And built himself a very unique house
19:01Roger
19:15How are you?
19:17Very well thank you
19:17Lovely to see you sir
19:19This is fabulous
19:25So how did it all come about?
19:36In 1972
19:37A group of seven of us bought this piece of land
19:40105 and a half acres
19:46And that was for you all to live together?
19:49That was what we thought we were going to do
19:50But at that point we were all very young
19:52So by the time some of us came to actually live here
19:57And we had children underway and all that sort of thing
19:59Yeah things changed
20:00Things changed yeah
20:01In a nice way it all feels a bit hippie
20:06Yeah a lot of people would see it that way
20:08For us I think what we really wanted to be was pioneers
20:12And why a circular house?
20:17The circles started out as just an idea
20:20A figment of my imagination
20:21And you'd never built a house for yourself before?
20:24When I designed it I'd never done any building at all
20:27So I actually got a job for three different builders
20:29When then I realised that I should never have done it in the first place
20:33Why? Why?
20:34Because I sort of realised that I was faced with all these complications
20:38That previously I'd been kind of gung-ho about
20:40Just love that you say
20:43I like circles
20:45I'm young
20:46I've never built anything like this before
20:48That simple
20:49Yeah all of us both
20:51Not simple to build
20:53Can we have a look inside?
20:54Sure
20:55Come on
20:55Roger it's beautiful
21:00What a gorgeous gorgeous space that is
21:06I love that skylight
21:10I can see why you fell in love with circles
21:14You're kind of embraced by the architecture
21:17The hub of the home
21:20This central circular space has been designed to invite a sense of privacy
21:25While still celebrating those expansive views
21:29Out to the Horaki Gulf
21:31Did you build everything?
21:38Yes
21:38Everything?
21:39Yes
21:40This area is pretty unconventional
21:42It's all built out of six foot twos on the walls
21:45And the tapered ceiling pieces are six foot twos cut diagonally
21:50And everything has been toned and grooved
21:53There are 180 individual lengths of timber
21:59That make up this spectacular conical ceiling
22:03Constructed back in 1975
22:07Roger designed and built this rather complicated feature
22:11Completely solo
22:13Bringing it to life in just a few short days
22:20All of this essentially is only 50 millimetres thick
22:26It's just 50 millimetres thick
22:28All of it
22:28And then on the outside of that
22:31Well we put the stucco
22:32Which is about 20-25 millimetres
22:34So it's very thin
22:36It is
22:36Yeah
22:37But this is a building that must get battered by the elements
22:40It's incredibly strong
22:41We've had all kinds of cyclones come through here
22:44And it's never moved at all
22:46Well it's strong because of its form
22:48Because you can imagine when it's been hit by the winds
22:50The winds are just going round the circle
22:52Rather than hitting a flat face
22:54That's very clever
22:55Well it hadn't luck
22:56Definitely luck
22:59So I have so many kind of mixed feelings when I stand in the space
23:03Because it harks back to many different forms of architecture
23:07I mean obviously the yurt is an obvious one
23:11But I could be standing in a mini chapel
23:13Do you know what I mean?
23:15When you've got the coloured glass above
23:16And it's all in white
23:18It feels like it could be a very spiritual space
23:22That definitely wouldn't have come from me
23:25Despite the lack of divine intervention
23:31Roger managed to design and build
23:34Not just one circular space
23:36But three
23:38One circle dedicated to living and dining
23:43And two more as the home's original bedrooms
23:46Oh what a difference
23:49So was this the original look in all three circles?
23:56Yes it was
23:56Just polyurethane that was how we started
23:59It's gorgeous because you get all the knots and all the grain
24:04It just feels a little bit warmer
24:07And what's this room?
24:11This was the master bedroom
24:12So you had the kids in that circle
24:15Yeah
24:16This was your main bedroom
24:18Yeah
24:18It's a beautiful bedroom
24:19With a growing young family
24:23And a promising career as a pretty handy builder
24:26You'd think Roger would have stopped there
24:29Well
24:30You'd be wrong
24:32By the mid-1980s
24:42Roger's family had outgrown their humble three-circle sanctuary
24:46On Great Barrier Islands
24:48So he undertook the new challenge of a circular extension
24:53An additional bedroom
24:56Bathroom
24:58And study
24:59As well as an entire guest wing
25:02Down this set of naturally curved stairs
25:06It's a staircase down to a whole other world of accommodation
25:11Crikey
25:13Another bedroom in here
25:16Loads of storage
25:19And then another bedroom
25:21I'll tell you what
25:24This house is unbelievably deceptive
25:27It's way bigger than I thought
25:29I think it's absolutely beautiful
25:33That Roger's developed and expanded the house
25:36Made it grow as his family grew
25:39But this life is worlds apart
25:45From where Roger started
25:47Island life in the 1970s
25:52It must have been more challenging
25:54When we first came here
25:55We had kerosene lamps
25:58For lighting
25:59And then we got
26:00A really, really
26:01Small solar panel
26:03Which was
26:04I think it was 80 watts
26:05Something like that
26:06And we could run
26:08A little black and white TV
26:09Until the screen
26:10Kind of disappeared into nothing
26:11And it was quite good
26:13Because we could then say to the kids
26:14You know
26:14You've got to go to bed
26:15The PV's run out
26:16So you even had a little solar panel back then
26:18Yeah
26:19That was probably about
26:20Very early 80s
26:21We got the very first solar panel
26:23So you were even solar pioneers back then
26:25Yeah, I guess
26:26We had the need
26:28You know
26:28The people didn't
26:29How easy was it
26:33To build a structure like this
26:34On an island
26:35When we first came
26:37There was no road
26:40For a start
26:40Bare bit of land, really
26:42So getting the materials here
26:44Was actually a major problem
26:46We brought a barge
26:48Moved it here in 1976
26:51And it came in
26:53Round to Prairie Bay
26:55Because it was blowing
26:56A mean southwester
26:58We ended up
26:59For all of the materials
27:01In Prairie Bay
27:02And then had to find a way
27:03To get it back around here
27:04Into Schooner Bay
27:05And then I met this fellow
27:09Who had a scow
27:12He'd just built this steel scow
27:13He then was able to bring it in
27:18Down to the bay
27:19Just down here
27:19I had already built
27:21A flying fox
27:22Across that bay
27:22And then from there
27:24We had a flying fox
27:25That went up to the
27:26I know this sounds far-fetched
27:28But this is actually what happened
27:29So we built these
27:32Two flying foxes
27:34And then from that ridge
27:36Had a trolley
27:37All done with a
27:39Capstan on the motor
27:40It's quite a feat of
27:45Logistical engineering
27:47Isn't this?
27:47It was a cooperative
27:48There were a few of us
27:50Involved in it
27:51And I'm really grateful
27:52For the help that I got
27:53Everybody seems to help
27:55Support and even
27:56Protect each other
27:57Yeah
27:58There is definitely
27:59There is definitely
28:00An element of that
28:01Yeah
28:01I can see how much
28:04Of an impact
28:04This community has
28:05On its residents
28:07But I can tell
28:08That for Roger
28:09This place
28:10Means so much more
28:12That to me
28:14Just says everything
28:17About why you're here
28:18Yeah
28:18What's it like
28:24Living here
28:25On a day like today?
28:27It's magnificent
28:28I absolutely love it
28:30A lot of people
28:34Came to Great Barrier
28:35For a one week holiday
28:36And then ended up
28:38Coming back
28:38And living the rest
28:39Of their lives here
28:40And that
28:40That is a regular story
28:41That you'll keep hearing
28:42It
28:42There's a lot of us
28:44For him that does
28:45It's just got that pull
28:46I didn't grow up here
28:49But this is my
28:50This is my home
28:53Yeah
28:56And I love the way
28:59You call it
28:59Magnificence
29:01I couldn't agree more
29:03I'm beginning to understand
29:13That out here
29:14There's a much deeper
29:15Level of connection
29:16To the land
29:18And to the sea
29:19And to find out
29:22Just where that comes from
29:24I'm heading north
29:25To one of the island's
29:27First true settlements
29:28Kaua Marae
29:30I'm about to meet Rodney
29:43Who's one of the local
29:44Maori elders
29:45To find out
29:50What the island means
29:51To him
29:51And his people
29:53But I'm also here
29:54To explore the architecture
29:56And design
29:56Of their meeting house
29:58Which is the central part
30:00Of the Marae
30:01Rodney, how are you?
30:10I'm very good
30:11Thank you
30:11Pleasure to meet you
30:13Nau mai
30:15Hara mai
30:16Welcome to
30:17He atapare
30:18Tupono Rehua
30:19Thank you so much
30:20To our tribal meeting house
30:22And it's a very
30:27Very important
30:27Symbolic building
30:28Isn't it?
30:29Oh it is
30:29Our tribal estate
30:32Sort of tells people
30:34Who we are
30:35As indigenous people
30:36And your family connections
30:38Go back a long way here
30:40Beyond the top 50s
30:42Oh my word
30:43Beyond the top 50s
30:45That's incredible
30:46Guided by the wildlife
30:50The ocean current
30:52And the stars
30:55Maori were among
30:57The first to voyage
30:58Across the Pacific
30:59In traditional wars
31:01Known as waka
31:04When they got into
31:08New land
31:09The waka was flipped
31:10Upside down
31:11And created
31:12The chief's house
31:13As you can see
31:17An upside down waka
31:19I love that
31:21The upside down waka
31:22Absolutely beautiful
31:25This is the centre
31:27Of the waka
31:30These are books
31:33That's what they are
31:36It tells a story
31:37You know
31:38That connects us
31:39Backwards in time
31:41But people have to have
31:43An understanding
31:44Of how to read it
31:45I'm getting the sense
31:49That this is so much more
31:51Than a place of shelter
31:52To rodney
31:53And his people
31:54Its identity
31:56Its memory
31:58Its heart
32:00It's beautiful
32:04The carvings are magnificent
32:06The name of our house
32:08Is Arehua
32:09If you have a look
32:11On the side
32:12And he's got a patu beside him
32:14So like a protector
32:15Yeah
32:16Yeah definitely
32:17A kautiaki
32:18Guardian
32:18And I just love the way
32:20He's looking out
32:21To the bay
32:22Our guardians
32:25Come from the sea
32:27On the apex
32:30That carving
32:31Is called
32:32Tukaiaya
32:32It's a sea eagle
32:34So our airspace
32:37Is taken care of
32:38With Tukaiaya
32:39The chains of islands
32:41Are taken care of
32:42With the tuatara
32:43The tuatara
32:45Comes out of the age
32:46Of the dinosaur
32:46It's most probably
32:47One of the only
32:48Dinosaurs that are left
32:50The tuatara
32:51Can bask on the rocks
32:53And then up on the beach
32:54But can also swim
32:56To other islands
32:58So that gives us
33:00Connection to
33:01The chains of islands
33:03That are around us
33:04And the sea space
33:07Is taken care of
33:09Around Te mauri
33:10Or the shark
33:12Our tupuna
33:14That used to call
33:15Him for guidance
33:17Normally when he revealed
33:19Himself
33:19A storm's coming
33:20Time to come in
33:28It's quite incredible
33:28For anyone to come
33:29And see a building
33:30Like this
33:30They would think
33:31It's a very simple form
33:33Very beautifully made
33:34But the depth
33:35Of the symbolism
33:36And the story telling
33:37And the connections
33:38To your family
33:40And the land
33:41And the sea
33:42And the sky
33:43It's phenomenal isn't it
33:44There is no one
33:45Older
33:46On this island
33:47Than us
33:48Our children
33:54And our grandchildren
33:55Will have an identity
33:57Around who they are
33:59Because of
34:01Their tribal make-up
34:03Of their tribal house
34:04I feel an immense
34:09Sense of gratitude
34:10To Rodney
34:11For sharing the history
34:12Of his ancestors
34:13With me
34:14A powerful
34:16And symbolic home
34:18Built upon foundations
34:20Of bravery
34:21Community
34:22And of respect
34:24For the natural world
34:26Medlands Beach
34:37Medlands Beach
34:37Is a growing community
34:38Of homes
34:39Located on the eastern front
34:41Of this spectacularly
34:43Remote island paradise
34:45Great Barrier Island
34:47It may look like
34:50A paradise postcard
34:51But its proximity
34:52To the ocean
34:53Means that the weather here
34:55Is ruthlessly unpredictable
34:57But often the toughest conditions
35:04Can help to forge
35:07The toughest
35:07Of homes
35:09So today's my last day
35:12On our tear
35:12Great Barrier
35:13I'm on my way
35:14To meet Stuart
35:15Who's the architect
35:16For an award-winning house
35:18That has a unique spin
35:20On the traditional courtyard
35:22A finalist in the New Zealand
35:27Home of the year awards
35:28And winner of the best interior
35:30For 2019
35:32This property is set back
35:34Well beyond the boundaries
35:36Of the beach
35:37This is it
35:38Just tucked away
35:40At the end of a long driveway
35:42A four bedroom
35:46Three bathroom
35:47Family hideaway
35:48That on first inspection
35:51Looks more like
35:52A beautifully designed
35:54Military complex
35:55Than a high design home
35:57Very nice
36:00Stuart
36:03G'day
36:04Lovely to meet you
36:06Nice to meet you too
36:07What a fantastic house
36:09That is a pure crisp
36:10Piece of elegant modernism
36:12Right there
36:12You are absolutely right
36:14Very good description
36:16Stuart Gardine
36:18Is the ambitious architect
36:20Who was commissioned
36:20To design this place
36:22Apply known
36:23As the pinwheel house
36:25You would never ever know
36:29It was here
36:29As I came down that driveway
36:30Yeah I think
36:31I think they do sort of say
36:32That you know
36:33The best house
36:33Is always the ones
36:34You can't see from the road
36:35You know
36:36You know
36:36Down the leafy lane
36:37In this remote
36:41Wild location
36:42These houses
36:44Can get battered
36:45By the elements
36:45Can't they
36:46Yeah well
36:46It's called
36:46Great Barrier
36:47For a reason
36:48You know
36:48Because it is the island
36:50Which actually
36:50Sort of shelters Auckland
36:51From the easterlies
36:53You know
36:53The easterlies storms
36:54In a way
36:56That's probably why
36:57Most of the houses here
36:58Are actually set back
36:59Behind the dunes
37:00We put a lot of time
37:03Into the composition of it
37:04When you're not here
37:06You've got to close it up
37:07When you are here
37:08It's got to be very open
37:09From the outside
37:14This house
37:15Is an absolute fortress
37:17Large stack of shutters
37:21Keep out any hint
37:22Of unwanted rain
37:23Wind
37:24Or sun
37:25These hatches
37:28And the extended timber cladding
37:29Are also designed
37:31To protect some of the more
37:32Exposed window panes
37:34And even though you can
37:36Slide all the doors closed
37:38Pull all the shutters down
37:39Literally batten down
37:40The hatches
37:41I'm assuming
37:42The whole thing
37:43Just opens up
37:43Yep
37:44You're absolutely right
37:45Cool
37:46Let's have a look
37:47Oh Stuart
37:52This is absolutely
37:53Beautiful
37:55The lower floor
37:58Is almost like
37:59A locked down timber vault
38:00The play between
38:02The white ash
38:03And the warm indirect light
38:05Gives it this sort of
38:07Welcoming glow
38:08I see what you mean
38:11About everything
38:13Being closed up
38:14You've got these
38:14Beautiful shutters
38:15That make it feel
38:16Very very protected
38:17What was the big
38:20Architectural concept
38:21Well ironically
38:23During the design phase
38:24You know we called it
38:25The courtyard house
38:26Because that's what
38:27Our clients asked us for
38:28To do a conventional
38:29Courtyard house
38:31We very quickly realised
38:33It was impossible
38:33The site can only allow
38:3615% site coverage
38:37And so it was almost
38:39Impossible to get
38:40A four bedroom house
38:41On a piece of land
38:43This size
38:44So how on earth
38:45Have you designed
38:46A courtyard house
38:47Without a conventional
38:49Courtyard in the middle
38:50We ended up
38:51Inverting it
38:52We put the courtyards
38:53On the outside
38:54Instead of having
38:55A single courtyard
38:56We've been able
38:56To get four
38:57Now that is fantastic
39:07So this is courtyard
39:12Number one
39:13Courtyard number one
39:14On the west side
39:15So it's lovely
39:16In the evening
39:17So this is
39:21The next courtyard
39:22A little bit more
39:25Informal
39:26The outdoor shower
39:27The barbecue
39:27The laundry
39:28And then
39:31Another courtyard
39:32And this one feels
39:37Different to the others
39:38Because you've got
39:38This beautiful curve
39:39At the end of the garden
39:40It contrasts beautifully
39:43With the kind of
39:44Cubed form of the house
39:45It feels like
39:49There's a centre
39:50To the house
39:51And everything else
39:53Kind of spins around
39:54Which is the pinwheel
39:55Is that why you
39:58Call it the pinwheel
39:59Well we had called
40:00It the courtyard house
40:01And then of course
40:02Some people said
40:03Well it's actually
40:03A pinwheel isn't it
40:04The pinwheel
40:05Actually creates
40:06The asymmetry
40:07You know within
40:08This very simple
40:09Rectangular sort of form
40:11Gives it a dynamic
40:13Feel
40:14So let me try and find
40:16The absolute centre point
40:19Of the plan
40:19I'm guessing Stuart
40:20It's
40:21Somewhere
40:22Yeah that's it
40:25There
40:25Yeah get off
40:26Centred with the fireplace
40:27Perfectly balanced
40:29And then everything
40:30Spins and rotates
40:31Around it
40:33So you've got courtyard
40:36One
40:37Two
40:38Three
40:39Four
40:41Beautifully done
40:43Yeah
40:43It's extraordinarily simple
40:45When you experience
40:49This house
40:50From the lower level
40:51You can see
40:52That it has the ability
40:53To completely
40:55Close off
40:55From the outside world
40:57But as you venture up
41:00These beautiful
41:01Timber stairs
41:02It's the complete opposite
41:04The whole place
41:17Is exploding
41:18With natural light
41:19You've got top light
41:24Over there
41:24Top light over the staircase
41:27Just illuminating
41:29Just illuminating
41:29Those corners
41:30And this is all
41:36American white ash
41:38It's even been lightened
41:39Even more
41:40To make it feel
41:41More peaceful
41:42Calm and serene
41:43Not for one second
41:47Do I feel disconnected
41:48From the outside worlds
41:50The centre point
41:52The centre point again
41:53Is there
41:54And you've got view
41:55View
41:56View
41:57And all the bedrooms
42:01Just rotate
42:02Off this room
42:04Let's check out the bedrooms
42:09Beautiful full height doors
42:14Minimal handles
42:15And what I love
42:17Is that
42:17Every bedroom's the same
42:19There's no hierarchy
42:20There's no
42:21Master bedroom suite
42:23With an ensuite bathroom
42:24Or shower room
42:25It's four bedrooms
42:28All identical
42:29Two shower rooms
42:31And that's it
42:33A small amount of storage
42:36Look at that
42:37All felt lined
42:38And then a long
42:41Long minimal bench
42:43For you to put your suitcases
42:45When you arrive
42:46Even the hanging rail
42:48Is simple
42:50And effortless
42:50There's just something
42:53Very minimal
42:55Scandinavian
42:57Even Japanese
42:59About this house
43:00And then this
43:07Is one of the simplest shower rooms
43:10Ever
43:12VR to that courtyard
43:17And look at this
43:19For a shower
43:20Oh my word
43:23That is beautiful
43:26That is beautiful
43:28You've got this amazing contrast
43:33Between all the other rooms
43:35Being in timber
43:36And then you step into this
43:38Otherworldly shower space
43:40Which is in this brilliant
43:41White
43:42Italian Carrera marble
43:44The attention to detail
43:46Is stunning
43:47Even the marble
43:48Has been laid
43:50In this vertical orientation
43:52And what that does
43:53Is it just draws your eye up
43:54To that magnificent skylight
43:56Who would have thought
44:02That a small shower space
44:03Like this
44:04Could be so
44:04Architecturally powerful
44:06By rethinking
44:12The classic courtyard layout
44:14The pinwheel house
44:16Doesn't hide
44:16From the island's wild character
44:18It celebrates it
44:20During my time
44:28On out here
44:29There's been one
44:30Very powerful
44:31Overwhelming feeling
44:33That I've had
44:34Since I arrived
44:35And that's one
44:36Of protection
44:37Great barrier
44:43Was even given its name
44:44Because it protects
44:45The mainland
44:45I've seen some beautiful
44:49Resilient homes
44:50That have protected
44:51Those that live in them
44:52From the extreme elements
44:54That's fantastic
44:55And then
44:56There's the people themselves
44:58Supporting and protecting
45:02Each other
45:03Every single day
45:05No matter what
45:06Island life
45:06Throws at them
45:07When can I move
45:22More same time
45:23Next week
45:24Now not only
45:25Is Grand Designs back
45:26But now
45:27Kevin and superfan
45:28Greg James
45:29Are taking apart
45:30Each episode
45:31In Grand Designs
45:32Deconstructed
45:33It's streaming now
45:34Back to tonight
45:35And on the way
45:36Heart stopping tasks
45:37With a side of soup
45:38In Taskmaster
