05:43Hi Ian
06:05It is a wee bit narrow this entrance
06:06Okay in we come
06:07Here we come
06:08Is this us in the shop?
06:09This is us in the shop
06:11Anna's larder
06:12Oh!
06:13Now, this is Anna.
06:14Are you Anna?
06:15Oh, my man!
06:16You're the famous Anna?
06:17She's the famous.
06:18Of Anna's Larder.
06:19So is it named after you?
06:20Yes.
06:21Great, lovely to meet you.
06:23So what's in the shop then?
06:24All sorts of things.
06:26To your left we have lots of retro sweeties,
06:30lots of lovely jams, chukneys,
06:34Italian pastries, groceries.
06:37You still do the odd shift Anna?
06:39No?
06:40But she likes to come down and just make sure
06:43that we're doing our job.
06:45Are you still a supervisor?
06:46Yes, supervisor, yeah.
06:51We just met your mother there.
06:52Yes.
06:53So she started the shop, is that right?
06:55Yes, it was.
06:56My dad opened the shop for my mum to give her
07:00her own identity and give her something to work on
07:05and then the rest is history because that was over 60 years ago.
07:09Mm-hmm.
07:10And when did you start working in here?
07:12Oh, just when I was a wee girl.
07:13Did you?
07:14Yeah.
07:15That was just a few years ago.
07:16Yeah.
07:17I believe you.
07:18You're taking advantage of a blind man here, aren't you?
07:20No, I wouldn't do a thing like that.
07:23Was there a big Italian presence in the town?
07:26Yeah, there's a few Italian families but not as much as perhaps Glasgow or Edinburgh.
07:32But it's amazing up and down the country how many Italian families have kind of shaped the high street.
07:37Yeah, definitely, yeah.
07:38Didn't they?
07:39And then what you've got to remember, Ian, that my family started off with ice cream and fish and chips
07:44and that was their main sort of bread and butter.
07:48And then, of course, as the years progressed, you sort of diversify a little bit.
07:53Our cameraman just spotted this, actually.
08:03It's a tactile relief.
08:05It represents the town, I think.
08:07We've got brewing, mining, glass making.
08:11We've got the tower.
08:12I can't reach the tower.
08:13It's too far up.
08:14Alois celebrates its history.
08:17But now it's time for me to meet the Nick generation at The Hive.
08:22A building that's been brought back to life by some of the town's young people.
08:27Good boy, on you go.
08:28Hi, Ian.
08:29Tony.
08:30Tony.
08:31You're the man I'm looking for.
08:32Yes.
08:33Nice to meet you.
08:34Welcome to The Hive.
08:35Thank you very much.
08:36So can you tell me all about The Hive then?
08:37So this is a youth and community space that we've been working on since October last year.
08:42Some of the youth pupils from Alois Academy have come out on a kind of alternative curriculum
08:48to help us develop it and do the place-up.
08:52We knew there was a need for more activity for young people within the town centre.
08:58And it'll help kind of reduce anti-social behaviour and give them a bit of a purpose.
09:02What was in here before?
09:03It was a nightclub.
09:04All right.
09:05I was never in it.
09:06You're not.
09:07You say that now, don't you?
09:09But young people in the town, what's it like?
09:14There's not a lot of stuff for us to go and do, so it's good that we've got here now.
09:17We can come sit and do stuff.
09:19Right.
09:20And apart from painting, what else do you do when you come here?
09:22I've been promoting The Hive today.
09:24We've been making Facebook pages and that for it, so folk can find out more about it.
09:30The Hive has been life-changing for Liam.
09:33The skills he has gained here have won him an apprenticeship with a painting and decorating firm.
09:39At times I struggled in school, but coming here was, you know, it was a good opportunity for me to learn a new skill.
09:47So when you look around you here and the progress has been made in this building, and you've played your part in that, what do you think?
09:52How do you feel?
09:53Erm, I feel amazing.
09:54You could never have imagined this when we had worked in this building for the first time what it was going to turn around to.
10:00You've done okay since then though, haven't you?
10:02I've done okay since then, yeah.
10:03So tell me what's happened since then.
10:04Erm, I got my exams finished, erm, throughout school.
10:07Getting my CSAS card and recently I ended up getting an apprenticeship.
10:11Hey, wow, great.
10:12Ian, thanks for coming to the Hive.
10:18We'd just like to give you a wee Alba Athletic shirt.
10:21Oh, right.
10:22As a thank you for coming out.
10:23A bit extra large.
10:24Ah, that'll fit no problem.
10:25I think so.
10:26If I was ever to get into this, I'll probably need a bucket of grease and a paint scraper to get out of it again.
10:38This is Wimpy Park.
10:40That used to be waste ground.
10:42Now the sunshine.
10:43Swings.
10:44And an awful lot of very committed volunteers.
10:47Right, try this one over there.
10:49There you go, that's brilliant.
10:52Eric is one of the folks that keeps it all going.
10:55And, apparently, he's got a job from me.
10:58I've got a trowel.
10:59Something leafy.
11:01And Eric watching me.
11:03Like a man about to witness a horticultural crime.
11:06Who are we standing next to here, Eric?
11:08We're standing here to a raised bed which has been given over to some pensioners.
11:13What are you trying to say, Eric?
11:15Well, come on.
11:17Yeah, we're still young.
11:18Yeah, thank you.
11:19No, no.
11:20We're just making it more brighter.
11:21All right, okay.
11:22And smelling great.
11:23We've got a city to work here.
11:24Right, okay.
11:25So what do you want me to do?
11:26Yeah, we're going to be planting some carnations.
11:27Oh, right.
11:28And this is the carnations here.
11:29Yeah.
11:30There was a trowel.
11:31Oh, here's a trowel, Eric.
11:32How far do you want me to go down?
11:33Oh, a bit more, a bit more.
11:34Could you give me a little bit of history behind the park?
11:36This was a part of the Erlemar's estate.
11:37This walled garden was built in 1870.
11:38It was a formal garden.
11:39Huge greenhouse, almost the length of the back wall here.
11:43See, this park was sold by the Erlemar in 1960 to build houses.
12:05So the council eventually built houses in this area.
12:08And it was Wimpy who built the houses.
12:11Right.
12:12And we just kept the name because the locals called this the Wimpy Park.
12:17The intervening years saw the park become derelict.
12:22But since the Wimpy Park community group took it over in 2017,
12:26it's had an amazing transformation.
12:31We asked the local community,
12:32what would you like to see in this area, in this park?
12:35So we gave them a choice.
12:36What type of play equipment would you like?
12:38What sort of events would you like?
12:39Do you want a football pitch?
12:40Yeah, we've got one.
12:41So we've got two football pitches here.
12:43And this is one of the best play areas in the county.
12:49I'll just take it out of the sweet tub.
12:51OK.
12:52I'll just break the roots a little bit.
12:53There's a gardening bit here.
12:55It just helps it grow better.
12:57There we go. How did that?
12:59Then that's absolutely fantastic.
13:01Could you be a gardener?
13:02Yeah.
13:06I've been transferred for watering duties in a different bit of Wimpy Park.
13:12I assume this is what career progression feels like.
13:16Well, there's some watering.
13:17Oh, right. OK.
13:18Well, this weather we've been getting.
13:20Splash it about anywhere you want, mate.
13:22Are you from this area?
13:23Yes, born and bred Ian.
13:25Are you?
13:26Born and bred.
13:27Do you like it?
13:28Love it. Love it.
13:29I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
13:31And how's the town doing?
13:32Like, years ago, it was rich with kind of industrial heritage and stuff like that.
13:39There was a lot of woolen mills.
13:41There was an aerodrome back in the day.
13:43We used to build boats and all that in Alava as well, eh?
13:46So, just some big industrial stuff, eh?
13:49Well, that'll never come back, but will it?
13:51Let's be honest.
13:52Never say never, eh?
13:53You're an optimist.
13:54I'm letting my job go a wee bit fine here.
13:56Aye, aye. Sorry.
13:57Oh, yeah.
13:58Aye.
13:59That's perfect, Ian. You're doing a grand job.
14:08Good boy.
14:09On you go.
14:10Good lad.
14:11On you go.
14:14Apparently, it says on this wall, according to our fine producer here,
14:18it says,
14:19which is a motto for the town here in Alava.
14:23And apparently, it's to do with Robert the Bruce, who lost his glove
14:27and he told people to go look out for it.
14:31You should look after his stuff a bit more carefully.
14:33I think I'm just thinking about my lunch now.
14:34Is it lunch time yet?
14:36It is, actually.
14:37Good.
14:38This is The Makers.
14:39A community shop, cafe and gallery.
14:53It's staffed mainly by people with autism.
14:55Here's your coffee.
14:57Thank you very much.
14:58That's great.
14:59Thank you.
15:00Now.
15:01Is there sugar on the table, James?
15:03Ah.
15:04It's in that little pot.
15:05What are we supposed to do with this?
15:06Oh, it's sugar.
15:07Oh, no.
15:08It's be sachet.
15:09Thank you very much.
15:10You're very well.
15:11So I'm not like one of the animals in the Serengeti
15:12and I'm just allowed to die without the Karaman intervening.
15:13Thank you.
15:14Thank you.
15:15Thank you.
15:16Thank you very much.
15:17Thank you very much.
15:18You're very well.
15:19So I'm not like one of the animals in the Serengeti
15:20and I'm just allowed to die without the Karaman intervening.
15:22Thank you.
15:23So I'm not like one of the animals in the Serengeti
15:24and I'm just allowed to die without the Karaman intervening.
15:28Thank you.
15:29Thank you.
15:36Oh, nice coffee.
15:44Hi there, did you make the bacon roll?
15:46Oh, yes.
15:47I made a bacon roll and a cappuccino for you.
15:49Did you?
15:50Well, it was very good.
15:51Thank you very much.
15:52You're welcome.
15:53My favourite part of the Makers Cafe is making the cakes,
15:58including the Empire biscuits.
16:00And how old you are, Ewan?
16:02Yeah.
16:03I'm 33.
16:0423?
16:05No, 33.
16:06Oh, 33.
16:07Same age as me.
16:08Yeah.
16:09I'm lying.
16:10I know.
16:13Yvonne and her son Keith, who is artistic, are regulars here.
16:17They have a special connection to the charity that runs this place.
16:22What was it like for people with autism back in the 60s?
16:26Oh, well, it was something that people didn't really know about.
16:33We went to our GP.
16:35He more or less said, you know, he's going to need a lot of care and attention.
16:41Scottish Autism is now a national charity, but it started here in Alloa in 1968.
16:50Parents like Yvonne felt they needed support for their autistic children.
16:54Yvonne, without Scottish Autism, what would have happened to people like Keith and others?
16:58Oh, gosh.
16:59I often think there must have been lots of autistic people around before, but they were probably
17:11labelled idiots and imbeciles and, you know.
17:15And you end up in one of these massive big hospitals that were prevalent up and through there.
17:20Yes.
17:21I would have hated that for him.
17:23Uh-huh.
17:24OK, Keith, what do you enjoy doing?
17:29What do you like to do, Keith?
17:33It's not very communicative.
17:35That's OK.
17:36Don't worry for it.
17:37He likes walking and he likes swimming, don't you?
17:41And you like tent and bowling.
17:44You're a sportsman.
17:45Mm-hm.
17:54And the outskirts of Alloa is the village of Sochi.
18:01Back in the 1960s, some very strange events happened here.
18:07This man knows all about it.
18:09A proper writer, proper ghost hunter.
18:12Sochi has a marvellous tale.
18:14It's one of Scotland's biggest poltergeist events.
18:17Oh, right, OK.
18:18And it happened here in Sochi.
18:20In Sochi, this quiet wee area.
18:23It was autumn 1960.
18:27Eleven-year-old Virginia Campbell and her family had recently moved to Sochi from County Donegal, an island.
18:35A couple of weeks after moving in, strange things started to happen.
18:40Virginia was in bed.
18:42Next to her was her cousin Margaret.
18:44She was about nine years of age.
18:46And then suddenly they heard footsteps on the linoleum floor.
18:50Nobody was there.
18:51Then they heard scratching noises coming from all over the bedroom.
18:55They were terrified.
19:00Strange noises and footsteps pervaded the whole bedroom.
19:04The bedstead was rattling.
19:06The covers of Virginia's bed was moving.
19:09Just like as if you had a stone and you threw it into a quiet mill pond.
19:14Those concentric ripples were pervading out along this bedspread.
19:19The strange activity continued for months.
19:22Things were getting so bad, they had to do what's known as an exorcism.
19:27Now, I believe that you're recording here, don't you?
19:30I do indeed.
19:31BBC Scotland did a programme in December 1960 for a programme called Scope.
19:36The first part of the recording is that in which the knocking or tapping sound is heard.
19:42The microphone at this stage was just beside the bed of the child.
19:47For a young girl, it must have been absolutely terrifying.
19:52It's really easy to be sceptical about these kind of things.
19:55But, you know, some of his evidence seems quite compelling,
19:57particularly some of the witnesses at the time.
19:58I think that's the astonishing thing.
19:59But the supernatural activity wasn't confined to the home.
20:09It followed Virginia to school and was witnessed by her classmates.
20:12Peter, what do you remember of the socke poltergeist?
20:14I remember in the classroom when the desk started to raise from the floor and then the lid started to bang.
20:21How far did the desk rise up into the air?
20:33I would say 18 inches to 2 feet.
20:50Sort of about that height.
20:52Yeah, about that.
20:53Yeah, yeah.
20:54And there was the desk lid.
20:57You can imagine when it was flapping, it was making a really loud noise.
21:01And I think everybody was stunned.
21:05What was Virginia's reaction when that desk started to lift off the ground?
21:09She was frightened.
21:10On my personal view, I'm a Christian and I believe in the Lord and I believe in the Holy Spirit.
21:16But this wasn't natural.
21:19It wasn't from the Lord.
21:21It was something else.
21:24From things that go bump in the night to things that go slam on the mat.
21:41Be it Esprit Judo Club is for all ages and abilities, as I'm about to prove.
21:46I've got a suit here.
21:48I hope you lot are not in a rush.
21:50But I'll come out looking like Superman.
21:52Right, boys.
21:53I'll wait for the edge.
21:54Don't be silly.
21:55I'm going to think it's my trousers fault then.
21:58Right.
21:59Ready for this?
22:00Not particularly.
22:01Yeah.
22:02Right.
22:03I'll guide you in.
22:04Here we go.
22:05Okay.
22:06Perfect.
22:07I'm going to find you, am I?
22:08No, no.
22:09I'm not.
22:10I'm not.
22:11I'm not.
22:12I'm not.
22:13I'm not.
22:14I'm not.
22:15I'm not.
22:16I'm not.
22:17I'm not.
22:18I'm not.
22:19I'm not.
22:20I'm not.
22:21I'm not.
22:22As my opponents warm up, Lee is going to teach me a few moves.
22:27For your right hand, we go on my lapel.
22:28Right.
22:29So this is your judo grip.
22:30Okay.
22:31You stand with your strongest foot forward.
22:32We're going to do a throw call also to Gary.
22:35Mike, step forward with your left foot.
22:37Right.
22:38All right.
22:39And then swing your right leg through.
22:40And I'm going to hook here.
22:41All right.
22:42All right.
22:43All right.
22:44You're not throwing me on top for us now.
22:45Reece.
22:46Lee is obviously a bit scared.
22:47So he's roped in Reece, his son, to be my first opponent.
22:51And then swing it through.
22:53There you go.
22:54You got it now.
22:55You sussed it.
22:56I think so.
22:57Right.
22:58Right there you go.
22:59That was clean.
23:00Yes.
23:01Yes.
23:02Brilliant.
23:03Well done.
23:04You want Reece to throw you now?
23:05No.
23:06No.
23:07No.
23:08I'm too old for this.
23:09You're never too old for it.
23:10Never too old for it.
23:11You've done well.
23:12So now we'll teach you a wee hold down.
23:13What you're going to do is you're going to set his armpit.
23:15And not look at him.
23:16Not look at him is quite easy.
23:17No, that's easy.
23:18We've got to do a hold.
23:20Okay.
23:21Right hand goes round his neck like a scarf.
23:23So right round.
23:24Okay.
23:25Wrap his arm round your tummy like it's a belt.
23:26Right.
23:27Lean into him a little bit.
23:28Right.
23:29And then hold him tight.
23:30That's it.
23:31That's it.
23:32That's it.
23:33That's it.
23:34This makes a difference.
23:36Because normally I'm through my way around with the production team.
23:39What do you think it does for the young people who come along here?
23:43Hopefully it gives them a bit of confidence, a bit of pride, a bit of self belief.
23:48Builds a bit of discipline in them as well.
23:50That they know what's right and know what's wrong.
23:52Kids know that if they respect us we respect them and they get back what they give out type of thing.
23:57Now you guys are a very successful club here aren't you?
24:00Yeah, we've done it right.
24:01We've done it right.
24:02It's a very family orientated club in that.
24:04We've had a few British medalists, a few Scottish medalists and a few representatives here at Britain.
24:09Not only that, but the club has an Olympian, Gabby.
24:13She represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, coached by Lee.
24:20How did you do at Tokyo?
24:22Not my best result, but definitely a leading experience for myself.
24:26And how long have you been here in Aloha?
24:28Five years this year.
24:29Right, and what brought you here?
24:31Judo.
24:32Judo?
24:33Judo brought me here.
24:34Do you like it?
24:35I do, I do.
24:36This is my extended family.
24:50Aloha was one of Scotland's most important brewing towns for more than three centuries.
24:58At one time it could boast eight breweries.
25:01Today, it has only one.
25:05And I'm getting the chance to visit.
25:08We're in William's Brothers Brewery in Aloha and I'm a production filler.
25:13So I'll fill bottles with beer, cans with beer, anything you want, I can fill it.
25:17That's your job?
25:18Pretty much, that's my job.
25:19Filling it but not drinking it?
25:20Oh, no drinking it.
25:21That's just the weekends.
25:22That's the weekends.
25:23Around 7 million litres of beer come out of this brewery every year.
25:29I can be honest, do you like the beer that comes out of here?
25:32I love it.
25:33You would say that.
25:35William might be responsible for filling the cans, but I'm going to get the chance to
25:40empty them.
25:42I've got a selection for you.
25:43It's a dirty job, but I suspect I'm going to have to do this.
25:46Yes, I'm afraid so.
25:47None of them can drink.
25:48The good thing about being blind, I don't have to worry about driving, so this is the
25:51great thing about it.
25:52We're going to start off with one called Juicy Joker.
25:55Right.
25:56So this is a New England style.
25:58So lots of wheat, lots of oats and lots and lots of hops.
26:01OK.
26:02Now this, you should be getting lots of tropical fruit.
26:05That's it here?
26:07Yes, it's there.
26:11I like the smell of that already.
26:12Yeah, like I say, it should be tropical sort of fruit.
26:15I can smell the fruit, yeah.
26:17And a nice smooth mouth peel.
26:22Oh yeah, I like that.
26:23Such good water here.
26:24We get really, really good water.
26:26Really good for making most lagers and ales.
26:31And it's good that we can keep that tradition, you know, going.
26:34I tell you what we'll do now.
26:36We'll go on to one that you told me you like very much.
26:42Right.
26:44It's a great sound for a start.
26:45Yeah.
26:47Now this is Heather Ale.
26:50Heather Ale.
26:51Now what's the story behind Heather Ale?
26:52Can you give me a little bit of it?
26:53Well, we had a home brew shop in Glasgow.
26:56And a woman came in one day and for a trade, she said,
26:59I'll give you this recipe for some brewing supplies.
27:05And she said, this is an ancient recipe.
27:07And it was on this old, old, old paper.
27:11And it was the recipe for Heather Ale.
27:13And that is what you are tasting now.
27:15Yeah, that's nice.
27:17Very nice, in fact.
27:18That probably sums up my time in Alaa.
27:20Major and I have really enjoyed being here.
27:21Major, you ready?
27:22And the locals have assured me that the weather is always this good.
27:24Come on then.
27:25There's still a thread of the old industries running through the place.
27:37And most folk are quietly confident about what's next.
27:40And you know it's true.
27:41Right kind of town.
27:42You know it's true.
27:43Right kind of town.
27:44You know it's true.
27:45Right kind of town.
27:46You know it's true.
27:47Right kind of town.
27:48You know it's true.
27:49Right kind of town.
27:50You know it's true.
27:51Right kind of town.
27:52You know it's true.
27:53Right kind of town.
27:54You know it's true.
27:55Right kind of town.
27:56You know it's true.
27:57Right kind of town.
27:58You know it's true.
27:59Right kind of town.
28:00You know it's true.
28:01Right kind of town.
28:02You know it's true.
28:03Right kind of town.
28:04You know it's true.
28:05Right kind of town.
28:06You know it's true.
