A 22-year-old mother has admitted in the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, on Wednesday (Oct 1) to giving up her three-month-old daughter to a couple for RM2,000 due to financial difficulties.

00:23According to the charge sheet, Yan participated in a transaction
00:26with the intention of relinquishing care of her biological daughter
00:30to a couple, aged 51 and 35, in return for cash.
00:35The offense was committed at about 8 p.m. on September 17
00:39in front of a laundrette in Bandakaba, Melaka-Terga.
00:43If convicted, Yan faces up to 20 years in jail,
00:47a fine of up to 50,000 ringgit, or both, under Section 48 of the Child Act 2001.
00:54Originally from Klang, Yan had moved to Melaka in search of work while pregnant.
01:00Facing financial hardship and marital disputes,
01:03she secretly handed over the infant to the couple, who live in Perak.
01:07Yan has two other children, aged three and two,
01:10who are currently under the care of their grandparents.
