River Nile floods in Sudan: speculation turns to Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam

Ethiopia claimed Monday that its recently inaugurated dam has helped lessen floods that have hit Sudan, as speculation rose over whether it has actually caused the deluges. At the same time, Sudan's rainy season, lasting from June to October, can lead to floods due to heavy rains.

00:00Sudan's authorities issued a red alert warning for floods on the River Nile on Tuesday.
00:07Two tributaries, the White and the Blue Nile, have recorded rising water levels for the past days,
00:12and several Sudanese states have already experienced flooding.
00:16Sudan's rainy season from June to October tends to lead to heavy downpours and can trigger floods.
00:23But speculation has been running high over whether another reason might be behind the current situation.
00:28Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam, or GERD, which was inaugurated in early September.
00:35The hydroelectric dam, which is Africa's largest, is located on the Blue Nile tributary of the River Nile,
00:42just on the border with Sudan.
00:44Ethiopia is expecting the dam to boost its economy and double its electricity generation capacity,
00:50but the dam has triggered tensions with neighbours.
00:53While Sudan suggested a link between the floods and the dam,
00:56Ethiopia said on Monday that the GERD had helped to lessen the rise in water levels.
