00:00Tolkien was always a man of letters, a professor fascinated by philosophy, by history and above all by the study of languages.
00:05He spoke of a dozen of them, modern and ancient.
00:08This is what drives him to write in the first place, the possibility of being able to create languages.
00:11And today we know that he succeeded brilliantly.
00:13But the young man knew above all sorrow and war.
00:16He lost his parents very early and saw many of his friends perish on the battlefield during the First World War.
00:21He will return from the war transformed and above all inspired by the horrors he saw and experienced.
00:25It was at this time that he began to scribble down what would become The Silmarillion.
00:29After the war, he became a professor of languages at Oxford University.
00:32And one day, he thinks and writes a sentence that has been running through his head.
00:36A very simple sentence.
00:37In a hole lived a Hobbit.
00:42From there, he will begin to shape a universe around this simple sentence.
00:46And this is how the children's novel simply titled The Hobbit was born.
00:50The book was published in 1937 and was an unexpected success.
00:53Of course, publishers were quick to ask for a sequel.
00:55And the author will then rethink and expand his universe.
00:58The magic ring that Bilbo finds in The Hobbit will become the One Ring, a powerful weapon forged by the Dark Lord of Sound.
01:05This is what this new novel titled The Lord of the Rings will revolve around.
01:09To complete his story, he draws inspiration from centuries of folklore.
01:11Romans, Greeks, Celts, Norse.
01:14Most of which have stories about magic rings, sources of desire.
01:18The Arthurian legend, the Volsunga saga, the poem Beowulf.
01:21He will draw on all these stories.
01:23Without forgetting of course his own history and experience.
01:25After the war, Tolkien became convinced that the pursuit of power could corrupt even the purest heart.
01:31That she was an evil that could eat away at the minds of human beings.
01:33He will insert this vision deep into his story.
01:36And after more than ten years of writing, the thousand and some pages of The Lord of the Rings are ready to be printed.
01:41The novel is divided into three for economic reasons.
01:43And the result lives up to expectations.
01:45The Lord of the Rings becomes a monument of literature.
01:47The difficulty in grasping the work offers a real sense of reward to the reader.
01:52Who, if he manages to immerse himself wholeheartedly in this story, will not come out unscathed.
01:56But the unexpected success came mainly from the United States during the 1960s.
01:59Where the country's youth will take over the novel and make it a symbol of counter-culture.
02:03The thing is, Tolkien doesn't really agree with that.
02:06He's more of a conservative type.
02:07And hippies aren't his thing.
02:08Despite the fact that his story emphasizes orthodoxy and denies all kinds of modernization,
02:16Young Americans who believe in non-violence see it as an example of pacifism and non-conformism.
02:21Because precisely, despite the action and adventure, the grandeur of the quest and the seriousness of the threat,
02:26The heroes of this story are hobbits.
02:28Peaceful creatures, who live off their harvest, on the fringes of society, day by day.
02:33Not to mention they spend their free time smoking weed.
02:35So yes, we can easily say that hobbits are hippies.
02:37But beyond that, it is their vision of power that is popular with readers.
02:40Because for them, the desire for power is simply non-existent.
02:43All he seeks is peace and quiet.
02:45That's why they are most likely to wear the ring.
02:48Take Bilbo from The Hobbit.
02:49He is given an elven sword just the right size for him, which can cut and pierce anything.
02:54However, when you have to avoid being eaten by trolls, a dragon or even Gollum,
02:57He does not use his arms or his weapon, but his cunning.
03:01By trapping his enemies with tirades, compliments and other riddles.
03:04It is therefore not surprising that the non-violent youth of the Baby Boom have taken up Tolkien's story.
03:08But they're not the only ones who want to make this incredible story their own.
03:11Inevitably, the second most read book of the 20th century, after the Bible, was going to arouse all kinds of desire.
03:16And that's when the author will start receiving a lot of requests for adaptations.
03:20The most outlandish request comes from the Beatles,
03:22who in the 60s wanted to adapt the work to the cinema and play the main protagonists.
03:26All directed by Stanley Kubrick.
03:29The project was eventually canceled after the director refused,
03:31and Tolkien put his biggest veto in history.
03:34Because as I told you, you mustn't forget that hippies aren't his thing.
03:43The work has been broadcast in various radio serials on the BBC,
03:47notably supervised by Brian Chiblet,
03:49who will do a pretty good job on the adaptation.
03:51A work that will greatly influence Peter Jackson in the narrative choices of his trilogy.
03:55For example, he instinctively chose Ian Holm to play Bill Bon,
03:58because he is the one who lends his voice to the character of Frodo in the radio adaptation.
04:02The 1978 animated film is also noteworthy,
04:06because despite a good number of faults, it is still appreciated by quite a few people today.
04:10Then we have Hobbitit, a 9-episode TV series released in 1993,
04:15who... well who exists.
04:16Yes, we'll just say that it exists.
04:30But for a large-scale project to be considered,
04:33we have to wait for a New Zealander who is a fan of homemade gore films and a bit crazy around the edges,
04:37to say that he can adapt the unadaptable without ever doubting for a single second.
04:41And forced to note, well, there was no reason to doubt.
04:43Here we go!
