00:00Between The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, there is a real change in dynamic.
00:04The magic has given way to darkness, warm colors to cooler tones.
00:08The Return of the King, on the other hand, will be more like the second film, without reaching its darkness.
00:12but will also draw on the lyrical poetry of the first.
00:15We find the Frodon-Sam-Gollum trio with the same dynamic,
00:18which may seem repetitive, but which, as soon as the spider appears,
00:22will take a completely different turn and will finally get to the heart of the matter,
00:25in addition to giving us Eleja Wood's best facial expressions.
00:30The film is constructed in three acts: the battle, the destruction of the ring, and the farewells.
00:38The battle itself is designed to be even more grandiose than that of the previous film.
00:42Yet, despite considerable effort and undeniable success,
00:46it will never reach the dirty, creepy, organic side of Helm's Deep,
00:50and this is due to various points, already the fact that it takes place in broad daylight,
00:53that the action be split in view of the greatness of Mina Styrite,
00:56and also because of this very pronounced fantastic side, and perhaps too much at times.
01:01When Legolas does that, it's a little over the top, but it's really cool.
01:04When he does that, though, it's giga too much.
01:07Now, it's not necessarily disturbing,
01:08since at this point in the trilogy, we accept just about everything.
01:11Even this end of battle with the army of the dead,
01:13which is quite frustrating when you think about it.
01:15Let us compare it with the charge of Heroerim,
01:17and the heroic way they face those stronger than them.
01:20Beyond the utter epicness of Theoden's speech,
01:23and this astonishing charge where Oward Shore's composition takes on its full meaning,
01:27It's the little moments that make the difference.
01:29Homer's powerful gaze,
01:31the courage of Eywin and Merry,
01:33fear that turns against the orcs,
01:35the king's gaze when he sees the elephants,
01:37and he has to start all over again.
01:39Beyond the enjoyable action of this orgy of fantasy,
01:42It's really when Peter Jackson frames faces in close-up,
01:45and comes to seek the emotions that magic works.
01:47This is why we are 300% invested,
01:50and that when Eywin destroys the Witch King,
01:52when Theoden dies,
01:53we share all his emotions.
01:55But yet, suddenly,
01:56this battle which until then had embraced the point of view of men and their imminent ends,
02:00ends in gigantic wide shots where indestructible beings
02:03come to finish the job in fashion
02:04"We had no idea how to finish."
02:06This doesn't take much away from the grandeur of this battle.
02:08But the contrast is a shame, I think.
02:10Yet, The Return of the King is my favorite film of this trilogy.
02:13Already because I like it when things really end,
02:15but above all because despite his ambition to end in apotheosis,
02:19he doesn't forget to inject emotion,
02:21and it does it in a way neither of the other two films could.
02:23I mentioned the rhyming kings previously,
02:25but the destruction of the ring is also a moment of pure emotion.
02:28All dialogues between Frodo and Sam
02:30which precede and follow the destruction of the ring are heartbreaking,
02:33not forgetting all the reactions of the other protagonists
02:35who then think that the two hobbits are lost.
02:37Which means that after that,
02:38we have a scene which, taken out of context,
02:40can easily seem ridiculous,
02:41everyone arriving one by one in slow motion,
02:44like Christmas presents for Frodo,
02:45but which nevertheless work like crazy in the context.
02:48We're feeling really good at that point.
02:49Personally, the moment that quite often makes me shed a tear,
02:52It is when all the people of Gondor kneel before the hobbits.
02:55Every time, there is an indescribable emotion that runs through me,
02:57and I cannot help but be moved by this scene,
02:59despite the fact that I've seen it a hundred times.
03:01At the time of its release,
03:02There is a bit of controversy surrounding these many ending sequences.
03:05Many have rightly criticized the fact that the film did not know how to end,
03:08and it is both true,
03:09and at the same time false.
03:11If we take the film independently of the others,
03:13we can have this feeling.
03:14But if we logically decide to say to ourselves
03:15that it is the end of an epic of several hours,
03:18Well, I think it's almost not long enough.
03:19We don't even see what happens to most of the heroes.
03:22We spent too much time with these characters
03:24to agree to abandon them in 10 minutes.
03:26The Return of the King is a perfect ending,
03:28and completes a block of consistency that's pretty crazy when you think about it.
03:31Because it's not easy to maintain such a level over 3 films.
03:34There are few sagas that achieve this.
03:35The fact that this whole story was developed at the same time
03:38probably has something to do with it.
03:39I don't think I'm going to make many enemies.
03:40if I say that the Lord of the Rings
03:42still deserves its status as a cult work today.
03:44Even a masterpiece, without being afraid of words.
03:46A saga in its own juice,
03:47at the crossroads of two eras of Hollywood cinema,
03:49which manages to pair perfectly
03:51the old ways and the new ways.
03:53The story is total in its ambition,
03:54its stakes, its grandeur.
03:56All these races uniting
03:57and stand together against evil,
03:59bringing down totalitarian power,
04:01freeing honest people from tyranny,
04:03making the heart and mind triumph over violence,
04:06nature against destruction,
04:07respect and love versus hatred and indifference.
04:11It's impossible not to agree with all of this.
04:13And given the critical and public success of the trilogy,
04:15the whole world will adhere to it.
