00:02A police investigation is underway after the South African ambassador to France was found dead in Paris.
00:0858-year-old Nati Matetua had reserved a room on the 22nd floor of a building whose secured window had been forced open.
00:16This according to the office of the Paris prosecutor.
00:19His dead body was discovered in the Port Mayo district of the French capital.
00:23France 24 correspondent Tom Canetti has this reaction from South Africa.
00:27French police began looking for the ambassador on Monday after his wife said that she had received a worrying message from him.
00:35His phone was last located at 3pm on Monday afternoon near the Bois de Boulogne in western Paris.
00:41And the French police then sent a canine unit looking for him.
00:45The public prosecutor's office said that his body was found on Tuesday after he had fallen 22 storeys from the Hyatt Hotel at Port Mayo, not far from the Art de Triomphe,
00:55after the secured window in the room that he had booked had been forced open.
01:01The French police are still investigating and have not confirmed the circumstances which led to his death.
01:07The South African president released a statement saying that the ambassador's life had been ended traumatically and prematurely.
01:16Mtetwa served as minister for police between 2009 and 2014 and he had been accused two weeks ago by Lieutenant General Mkwanazi of political interference during the Mdlanga Commission,
01:30the ongoing Mdlanga Commission, which is investigating corruption within the South African police service.
01:35Later following those accusations, he had been called upon by the political party, the economic freedom fighters,
01:42to give evidence as a potential witness following those accusations.
