08:13I think that quote shifted culture, I think that celebrities are able to bring awareness
08:20to certain things that people on the ground aren't.
08:23Imagine your genitals being exposed for everybody to see.
08:27It's body shaming, fat shaming, I don't think most people want that to happen.
08:31In most states, it's not a serious crime and it should be.
08:35In my view, it's no different than a sexual assault.
08:40It's an assault by a different means and the law should reflect the damage it does and the law doesn't.
08:48You know, then it becomes the responsibility of the viewer as to whether or not you want to partake in that and watch in that.
08:55Then it's your own personal responsibility. I think that's the shift.
08:59You know, you have a bit of personal responsibility and I think that is clearer today than it was then.
09:04A lot more people were realizing what was going on in certain spaces online for the first time.
09:10Like maybe this is the first time that a lot of people heard about 4chan, even though they've been around and had been doing stuff for a while.
09:17There are a lot of really vile, really cruel things said on social media.
09:20But when you get to places like Reddit and to 4chan message boards, really kind of anything goes.
09:28You can say whatever you want about people. You can be nasty. You can be hateful. You can be misogynistic.
09:34And you'll be protected by other people who are invested in your right to express yourself in such a way.
09:40At the time that this happened, I was a breaking news reporter.
09:43I started really digging into this when we started to learn more about how this happened and who did it.
09:50Hello, my name is Dale Baran. I'm a writer and a journalist, and I'm here to guide you into the worst places on the Internet.
10:094chan began in October of 2003, started by a 15 year old boy, and it started as a way for him and his teenage friends to share jokes and talk about anime and things like that.
10:24Up until about 2007, when the trolling collectives became a little notorious, and then people noticed internet memes, and they wanted to monetize them immediately.
10:37And so at first sort of memes were associated with 4chan, and they're like, oh, 4chan has given us this wonderful thing called memes.
10:46And that was at the start of social media. So there was sort of this moment where they're like, oh, maybe 4chan will be like Facebook, right?
10:54So 4chan was always about powerless young men and nerdy men exerting power in any way they could, usually in virtual spaces.
11:02So if they could hack someone, if they could humiliate someone, that was always celebrated in the culture.
11:08By 2014, 4chan had become a place for toxic young men. And so a lot of them, surprised, didn't have girlfriends, didn't have romantic partners, and many of the early incel communities were on 4chan.
11:21Incels, which is short for involuntary celibate, are men who hold very disturbing ideas about women and relationships.
11:36They harbor strong anti-woman biases, and some of them have even committed acts of violence against women in the name of this incel identity.
11:44They tend to be into, like, the same things culturally, and they have these gathering places, like on the dark web, where they can further all of their bad ideas.
11:55Tonight, Apple revealing it was not a breach in any of their systems, including iCloud, but instead a very targeted attack on certain celebrity accounts, including their usernames, passwords, and security questions.
12:09My understanding is that they used a rather simple hack. It's known as spear phishing.
12:17So they pretended to be someone in charge at Apple and texted these celebrities and said, hey, I'm, you know, Apple security, Apple tech support. Will you just give me your password to verify?
12:28So that's essentially just tricking someone into giving their credentials over. And once that happened, then they could get into the iCloud accounts and root around for whatever they wanted to look for, which was naked pictures that the celebrities had taken of themselves a lot of the time and stuff like that.
12:44A Pennsylvania man agreed to plead guilty yesterday for his part in the nude photo hacking scandal.
12:50So the five men responsible for the fappening were prosecuted and imprisoned for their actions.
12:56These people weren't working together like a lot of things on 4chan. Once there started to be like a culture around the existence of these photos and trading them and getting money for them, they all kind of became part of the same circle.
13:11The first person who was convicted was Ryan Collins.
13:16Authorities said that Ryan Collins accessed at least 50 Apple iCloud accounts.
13:20He pled guilty.
13:22The second was Edward Majersek.
13:24Edward Majersek of Chicago admitted to sending emails to victims and asking for usernames and passwords to iCloud accounts.
13:30Served nine months.
13:32There was Emilio Herrera, and he was served 16 months in jail.
13:36So then there was George Garifano, sentenced to eight months in prison.
13:40The last person charged was Christopher Brannon, who was a Virginia teacher.
13:45He was accused not just of illegally accessing these accounts, but also of identity theft.
13:51So that led to a longer sentence.
13:54He was sentenced to 34 months in jail.
13:57It took a leak of this magnitude to see serious consequences for a form of revenge porn, which is something that is not always been taken very seriously by the law.
14:08The fact that these hackers got prosecuted for this is pretty rare.
14:13I think that was a big cultural turning point.
14:16The media did a better job.
14:17They realized that the victims were the celebrities, and that if you contrast that with, say, years ago, something very different was happening.
14:25The media and it seemed like popular culture and people in general celebrated taking women down a peg.
14:33I think that the attention that celebrities could bring to this stuff probably was instrumental in getting these laws passed.
14:42That said, this was footage that you were never meant to see.
14:45And there are laws.
14:46There are revenge porn laws.
14:47There are privacy laws.
14:48There are copyright laws that are all applied to these cases.
14:52And yet, you could still, within 10 seconds, be watching it right now if you Googled it.
14:58We want to see celebrities so much as a society.
15:02We want to literally see every ounce of them.
15:05But looking at somebody's naked image, somebody having sex, an image that was never intended for you and that was obtained illegally, it's wrong and it's voyeuristic.
15:15I think people were excited at first and then they were shamed.
15:19And that's maybe, like, a good use of shame.
15:21Because we weren't individually shamed.
15:23We were shamed as a society.
15:25If you stood outside the celebrity's window and watched them do this, you'd be arrested and hauled off to jail and everyone would call you a pervert and a stalker.
15:37If you watch it in the privacy of your own home and the image is stolen, nobody does anything. It's a normal act.
15:44I know the sentences were ridiculously light.
15:46I think that, frankly, the sentences have to be much stronger.
15:49And the consequences to anybody who would promote this material financially would be a strong disincentive to do it.
15:58When an angry ex posts nude photos of somebody online, whose responsibility is it to take that down?
16:05Who is at fault for it?
16:07This is exactly what happened to Katie Hill.
16:09California Congresswoman Katie Hill, vice chair of the powerful House Oversight Committee, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.
16:16It was this famous case of revenge porn.
16:21Katie Hill is, she's cool. She's charismatic. She's fun. And she's very approachable and kind. She's also had a tough life. She hasn't had it easy.
16:36She had personal struggles that kind of shaped her into this very real person. And when you interact with her, that's what you see.
16:44We're in the Angeles National Forest heading to Texas Canyon to go climbing for some team bonding. It's going to be great.
16:51She is a born leader since we were kids. You know, she always was the director of our plays that we put together on the street. And she always was really clear on what she wanted and always pushed through whatever obstacles were in her way to get there.
17:08When she first announced her decision to run, she was just 30 years old. So very young. And I think at the time, you know, there was a lot of questioning around, is she fit for office? Does she have enough experience? Is this job going to be too big for her?
17:23You don't look like most people in Congress.
17:26Right. We've got to change the face of politics if we want to really get people engaged.
17:32I'm Katie Hill, former member of Congress from California's 25th Congressional District, one of the youngest women ever elected to Congress. And I was forced to resign due to image-based sexual abuse.
17:51We're children of divorce. So when I was about seven, my parents got divorced and we moved to Santa Clarita.
17:57I graduated high school early. I was 16 when I graduated. And the reason I graduated early is that I thought I was a lot older than I was, you know, but I, you know, I have, I have a history of sexual trauma.
18:12It was early in my 16th year. I snuck out of the house and I went to a party and I got drunk. I was sexually assaulted and I felt that was still at the time when it was your fault for letting yourself get drunk.
18:31And, you know, I was called a slut. And in the guy's bathroom, they had written like, call Katie for a good time, whatever.
18:42I didn't know what to do about it. I didn't think about it at that point as sexual assault. I just thought, well, I was, I should have known better.
18:49It was only a few months later that I met Kenny. I got a job at Barnes and Noble and Kenny was working there too. He was older than I was. He was 20.
19:01That definitely played a big part in why I latched on to him. He felt like a safe space, I guess. And at that point, it was great to get the kind of attention that I was getting from him and it felt secure.
19:15Things moved pretty fast and I was living with him pretty fast.
19:18I remember naively thinking it was cool that someone so much older was interested, but very quickly we started to see a shift in Katie and concerns were raised.
19:29The flags were there. I just didn't see them.
19:33She'd be hanging out with us and she'd get a call and I have to go right now.
19:39Why? It's not like you're hanging out with random guys. It's not like you're hanging out with even friends, like you're talking your family.
19:48She was always on speakerphone. Always. God forbid somebody had a conversation without him being involved in it.
19:57I witnessed a few fights between them where he stormed off screaming matches.
20:05I really put my foot down and said something is very off. I don't like how controlling Kenny is.
20:13My sister just double downed and said, no, I'm happy. I'm in love. You're misreading it.
20:20And we learned to just support her rather than try to fight her because she needed to figure things out on her own.
20:31A coworker at the time brought up that she had found their dating profile looking for another woman to join their relationship.
20:40I knew my sister was bi at that point.
20:43I came out about it when I was about 18 and it basically led to like, he said, OK, if you want to have relationships with women, that's fine, but I want to be part of it.
20:54And I think at the time I sort of saw it as him being supportive.
21:00But I do think that it's hard to navigate for anyone who's bi, but in a relationship with the same sex or different sex like you, you have to pick one.
21:08We lived together and had been together for six years.
21:11So I was 22 when we got married and, you know, my parents had gotten married really young.
21:18His parents had gotten married really young.
21:20And it felt like since we'd been together for so long, like, OK, this is what you do.
21:25You know, my thoughts were, well, this is permanent.
21:29And again, you really you hope they are.
21:32You hope she's telling the truth.
21:33You hope that there's a happily ever after.
21:36But the concern never left.
21:41So.
21:44You just hope for the best.
21:46But how do you prepare for your husband to betray you?
21:58Whoever you're electing, you're electing to be a leader.
22:01And we have not nearly enough leadership in Congress.
22:04I was never planning on going into politics. That wasn't my dream or anything like that.
22:07I had actually worked in the nonprofit sector for my whole career.
22:10I was the chief operating officer and executive director of the largest homeless services nonprofit in California called Path People Assisting the Homeless.
22:20And then Donald Trump was elected president.

29:24And I also thought that he cared about her enough that he wouldn't want to do that to her
29:28Her ex-husband was aware of that relationship at the time and was part of it
29:33And as such had documentation that later was believed to have been potentially leaked by him
29:40I was in a staff meeting with my chief of staff and I think my legislative director
29:47And then all of a sudden my comms director came running in and is like
29:52Oh my god you have to see this
29:55Staff showed him to me like is this real is this you know
30:02I'm like that's me and I didn't know that these photos existed but
30:07And you can see in most of the photos I'm not looking at the camera
30:12Everybody knew
30:15These photos some of them depicted her in various states of undress
30:22A lot of them she was nude and they also showed her interacting with the individual
30:27That she was tied to who worked on her campaign
30:30And again you know they were nude in some of these photos or various states of undress
30:36I did not know he had the images that he had
30:39Those were taken without my knowledge
30:40There's one that I was looking but I thought that my ex was just playing on his phone
30:46And so I was just like kind of being silly or whatever
30:48But I didn't have any idea that he was taking a picture
30:50And so when they came out I was like
30:52Holy
30:53The journalist who published them in Red State
30:58Which is a right-wing blog
30:59Had previously been a campaign manager for my Republican opponent
31:03I guess what took me by surprise the most with when the photos actually came out
31:07Was I knew that Kenny was still so vengeful at that point
31:13But I didn't think that a publication would actually give that traction
31:20And they sure did
31:24You kind of go into crisis mode of like damage control
31:28And trying to figure out what to do
31:32They were in a relationship
31:36She was allowed to be in our family
31:38We all did say it was a bad idea
31:42Especially since it was quote-unquote position of power
31:47And such a taboo thing like a polyamorous relationship
31:50I just had a feeling that it could blow up
31:54And despite it being fully consensual
31:57And a committed relationship and everything else
32:00I just knew it wouldn't be perceived well
32:03I am deeply regretful for what she's been through because of this
32:09And how she was exposed during the scandal
32:12Hill claims she is a victim of a smear campaign launched by her ex-husband
32:16They are in the middle of a divorce
32:17Kenny was liberal too, definitely
32:19And he genuinely like I think believed in a lot of the same things that I did
32:24So I guess I didn't really expect him to collaborate with
32:29And to be clear, he still denies this
32:32He does
32:33But I know, I know what happened
32:38It became very quickly like I'm not leaving my apartment
32:47And then it's trying to figure out like what do you do from here
32:50Like I really didn't want to resign at first
32:52And it just got darker and darker for me
32:54And it became too much
32:57She had no idea these photos were being taken
33:00Which should to the public be even more of a red flag
33:04But it was completely ignored
33:07It was wild
33:08And yeah, she was horribly embarrassed
33:10We all know that everyone we know has seen her naked
33:13My dad
33:14He was a lieutenant at the time
33:17Became a captain
33:18All of his co-workers saw her naked
33:20Everyone you know has seen your daughter naked
33:22Like
33:23I can't fathom that
33:27The photos of Katie Hill were first released in about mid-October of 2019
33:32So that's roughly about 10 months into her tenure in the House of Representatives
33:37And suddenly, once they had been published, they were everywhere
33:41They were all over Twitter
33:43They were all over social media
33:44And it's like a wildfire
33:46It breaks my heart that nobody took into consideration that she was going through
33:58A horrible professional and public humiliation
34:02And the internet was still so cruel
34:05There was not even a day of break of the relentless attacks on her
34:12And it just
34:15It makes you want to ask
34:17How as a society have we just allowed ourselves to become so cruel?
34:23It's traumatic for everyone involved
34:24Not just the person that goes through it
34:27I was genuinely suicidal
34:29And after that
34:30I decided I needed to step down
34:32Like this wasn't something that I could continue to go through
34:35And so I called Nancy Pelosi to tell her first
34:39And she tried to talk me out of it
34:41And she even called me back a little later
34:43And said, even if you just
34:45If you just decide not to run for re-election
34:48You just stay on for the rest of the term
34:50But she really didn't
34:53She didn't want me to slip down
34:55Freshman Katie Hill just announced
34:57She is resigning amid a bizarre scandal
35:00Involving racy photos and an alleged affair
35:02They said that there were hundreds of photos
35:05And basically they were just going to keep releasing stuff
35:08Until I stepped down
35:09It was important to me
35:11To give a meaningful resignation speech
35:14And so it kind of took everything I had
35:16To write that
35:19I wanted to write it myself
35:20I no longer want to be used as a bargaining chip
35:22I'm leaving because I didn't want to be peddled
35:25By papers and blogs and websites
35:27Used by shameless operatives
35:29For the dirtiest gutter politics that I've ever seen
35:32And I am proud of the fact that I was able to stand up
35:35On the house floor and give that last speech
35:37I'm leaving because of a misogynistic culture
35:40That gleefully consumed my naked pictures
35:43Capitalized on my sexuality
35:45And enabled my abusive ex to continue that abuse
35:47This time with the entire country watching
35:50Hill has threatened legal action
35:52Over the publication of nude pictures
35:54Also racy text messages
35:55Published by a tabloid
35:57And the spread on conservative websites
35:59After talking to lawyers
36:02I decided that I needed to file something
36:05If we don't do anything about it
36:07Like we're just saying it's okay
36:09We're saying it's okay to do this to people
36:10So I used personal money
36:14I raised money to pay for it
36:17And I knew that it wasn't without risk
36:19Forget about me
36:22All the other people
36:23And the case basically had to do with
36:36The balancing of the free press against privacy
36:42I personally am more on the side of
36:47She gets to decide what images of herself are disseminated
36:53The other side of the argument is that
36:56She is a public figure
36:58As a public figure it is understood
37:01That there is an interest in this story
37:03If an argument can be made that
37:07The pictures are an essential element of the story
37:12And there is a first amendment right
37:14I understand that argument
37:17They had the full right to say
37:20We have seen images
37:22That show that she's in a relationship with this person
37:25We've talked to witnesses
37:26Or there were images that were not explicit
37:29That could have shown the exact same thing
37:31If you're saying that this is my liability
37:33Or this is my offense
37:34And that's not what they did
37:37Judge has dismissed former congresswoman Katie Hill's lawsuit
37:40Against the Daily Mail
37:42The judge cited first amendment grounds
37:44In the ruling yesterday
37:45I lost and I lost on the grounds that
37:47I was a public figure
37:49And those were journalists
37:50And the images were widely spread
37:54After these photos were released
37:57I was able to write stories
37:59Or Vanity Fair
38:00Or these other outlets
38:02The New York Times
38:02CNN, Washington Post
38:04Pick an outlet
38:05We were able to write about the allegations
38:07Without showing any of these photos
38:10And that's what it comes back to
38:12The question becomes
38:13Okay, what are we trying to achieve here?
38:16Do you need to release those photos
38:18To tell this story
38:19And to raise questions
38:20As to whether this person should
38:22Or should not hold an office
38:25In the House of Representatives?
38:27It's almost like we need
38:28Like a supreme internet judge
38:30Sitting there saying
38:31I will look at your story
38:33I will look at what happened
38:34And I will decide if this is alright
38:36I actually would support that
38:38I mean it would be easier
38:39Than the way we do it right now
38:40Which is hire a bunch of lawyers
38:41Pay an offensive amount of money
38:44Go to court
38:44Have a judge who probably doesn't even know
38:46How to turn his computer on
38:47And he's sitting there
38:48Deciding internet law for us
38:50In my case
38:59You were responsible for the legal fees
39:01Of the people that you sued
39:03And in my case
39:05That was several hundred thousand dollars
39:06And I had to declare bankruptcy
39:08Because of it
39:08I can't say that bankruptcy has been easy
39:12And I just finished it
39:14I didn't finally clear of it
39:15I am taking personal responsibility
39:18By stepping down
39:19And by trying to prevent
39:21What I did
39:23From harming other people
39:24In the caucus
39:25But it's still wrong
39:27And it's an example
39:29Of how the system
39:32Is still so deeply misogynistic
39:35And does things to women
39:38That it doesn't do to men
39:39I think the fact that Katie Hill
39:41Was a woman
39:42That she was a politician
39:43That she was a bisexual politician
39:45Had a lot to do with
39:47The outcome of that trial
39:48Male politicians are held
39:50To a different standard than women
39:51I think a lot of people
39:53Expect them to have scandals
39:55Somewhere in their past
39:57Or perhaps in their present day lives
39:59But women politicians
40:01Are expected to occupy
40:02A different standard
40:03They're supposed to be moral
40:05And upstanding
40:06And buttoned up
40:07And the less we know
40:09About their sexual lives
40:10The better
40:10And the unfortunate thing
40:11About the Katie Hill thing
40:12Is she was a democrat
40:14In a highly contested seat
40:16So her political opponents
40:18Took advantage of it
40:19But I think we really need
40:22To think about
40:23As a country
40:24And as a society
40:25Where does privacy fit in?
40:28We do need to talk about
40:29The ways in which
40:30We can regulate
40:31These platforms
40:33To prevent against
40:34These crimes
40:34Which are crimes
40:36It is a crime
40:37To release
40:38You know
40:39Non-consensual pornography
40:41AKA revenge porn
40:42Something positive
40:44Has to come out of this
40:44And so
40:45I started a pack
40:46Called Her Time
40:47My fight right now
40:49With Her Time
40:50The organization I founded
40:51Is to pass
40:53The Shield Act
40:53We don't have a federal law
40:56At all
40:57That prevents people
40:59From committing
41:00These acts
41:00Of non-consensual
41:02Intimate image
41:03Distribution
41:04We as a society
41:06Have to say
41:07That this isn't okay
41:08And if you don't have
41:08A law in the book
41:09Saying so
41:10There's no reason
41:11To believe
41:12That that's the case
41:13I wish that people
41:16Knew that I
41:17I never entered politics
41:19Because I wanted power
41:20Or because I
41:20Thought that I should be
41:22A member of Congress
41:24I did it because
41:25I genuinely felt like
41:28I needed to try
41:30And improve our country
41:31I've gone through
41:32A great deal of loss
41:33And trauma
41:34And I'm a person
41:35That
41:36At 35
41:37I'm a mom
41:39I'm so
41:39Happy to be a mom
41:41I love my family
41:42I'm still
41:43Trying to figure out
41:45What my part is
41:46To play
41:47In this
41:48Quest
41:50To search
41:51For a better future
41:52We will not
41:53Stand down
41:54We will not
41:55Be broken
41:55We will not
41:56Be silenced
41:57We will rise
41:59And we will
41:59Make tomorrow
42:01Better than today
42:02Thank you
42:03And I yield
42:03The balance of my time
42:04For now
42:05But not forever
42:09It's really hard
42:14To say
42:15What a sex tape
42:16Is like
42:16In the age
42:17Only fans
42:17If you
42:18Have a big
42:19Social media following
42:19And you turn 18
42:20You're contemplating
42:21Whether you're
42:22Going to be
42:22A porn star
42:23You might recognize
42:26Me from shows
42:27Like
42:27Boy Meets World
42:28Hey do you guys
42:29Have any toothpaste
42:30That I can borrow
42:30I'm a former
42:31Disney channel
42:32Celebrity
42:33Turned
42:33Adult entertainer
42:35That's a thing
42:36Celebrity
42:39These are taking
42:40To only fans
42:41I think
42:41Because there's
42:42An ease of usage
42:43There's less
42:44Of a stigma
42:44About doing only fans
42:46People are crazy
42:47They screen grab
42:48They screenshot
42:48It's going to live forever
42:50I've had
42:52A lot of time
42:53To fully comprehend
42:55That this is going
42:55To have long lasting
42:56Repercussions
42:57On the rest of my life
42:58The decisions
42:58I'm making today
42:59Will affect me forever
43:01Before
43:03So
43:07The
43:15This is going to be
