01:08between owners animals and the vets and I learn about a rescue center that's finding new homes for

01:30to do and gives a dog or a cat a lovely home so join me Fern Britain on a roller coaster of emotions
01:37inside the vets
01:39I'm back at the grove vets in the Bristol suburb of Henleys where husband and wife team Andy and Amy Valencia
02:02and their friend and colleague Dr James Greenwood have welcomed me in along with their team of veterinary
02:10nurses they've introduced me to their furry patients and their loving owners I'm really enjoying finding
02:20out at first hand what it's like to be inside the vets oh thank you very much our pets are so important
02:29to us that whenever they're not well we always want the very best treatment for them diagnosing
02:35exactly what's wrong and how to treat the problem is down to the skill and care of the vets this on its
02:42own is not enough information so we're going to do one more x-ray and I'm going to do an ultrasound scan
02:47and then we need to make a judgment call
02:49there we go Arthur you'll be okay won't you bud there we go let's get you in
03:01hello Arthur perfect I'll mark you in shortly thank you
03:10meet 12 year old rescue cat Arthur with his owner Carina
03:16Arthur came into our life from an animal sanctuary just outside Bristol we adopted him after seeing
03:24him in their adverts really he was diagnosed with feline diabetes and they made that very plain on his
03:31adoption form there's something about the pre-diagnosed condition that kind of made you want to help out
03:38if you could hi hello yes come on through thank you very much it's estimated that about one in 200
03:46cats has diabetes come on in that's over 60,000 cats in the UK Vets James is in charge of
03:54Arthur's case oh hello so Arthur is a diabetic oh here he is he's very handsome and this fluffiness is
04:09gorgeous on the whole he has been stable in the past but we're now his diabetes has hit a bit of a rocky
04:16patch again so we are monitoring and trying to work out what his glucose levels are doing
04:21and to help with that James is using the latest tech this is what we call a freestyle Libra so this
04:29is a new bit of kit what this does is connects to Carina's phone and it will actually read Arthur's
04:36blood glucose levels wow over 24 hours I've seen these on humans yeah right yeah they are amazing
04:43oh he's and and diabetes is something that all the cats get or so diabetes in cats is is relatively
04:49common so it's basically where there's either not enough insulin being produced or the body isn't
04:54responding to the insulin in the normal way which basically means that they can't control their own
04:59blood sugar levels so very similar to how we see with people it means that we end up most of the
05:05time injecting them then with insulin insulin is a hormone that helps us and all mammals to regulate
05:11blood sugar levels you have to administer that do you yes twice a day by syringe oh and he tolerates
05:19that yeah he was very good actually yeah when when we adopted him his foster care had got him quite
05:24used to it but I think from day zero he was fairly good with it Arthur's clever gadget monitors his blood
05:33sugar 24 hours a day traditionally we'd have had to try and measure his blood sugar levels
05:38using a blood test so we'd have to actually take physical blood like the prick test exactly so we
05:43can do a prick test on the edge of the ear or you can take a normal blood test with a needle and syringe
05:47but in order to understand what insulin the effect the insulin is having on the body you have to take
05:53probably at least six or seven maybe even up to eight or nine blood tests over one day so you can imagine
05:58for a cat coming into the vet's hospital having all those tests taken it's pretty stressful and
06:05the difficulty is that stress will actually push sugar levels up just because they're stressed whereas
06:10the beauty with this is that we apply it here and then we get a very realistic reading of his blood
06:14glucose levels amazing but this is this is a full-time job for you then yes two jabs a day that's a big
06:21it's a big commitment yes it is a commitment yeah yeah but on the other hand look at him he's
06:25gorgeous i know he's a lovely cat yeah and he's been a great cat to have around but we'll just
06:30see what his weight's doing that's interesting yeah good boy he's little down on the years
06:353.89 he's a good lad in the summer he loves being outside he just loves being with people
06:43he particularly adhered himself to my husband who previously was a bit of a dog person
06:48so i don't know if it's a thing there but cats will always hang your ass yeah yeah he loves him
06:55to bits and just kind of will sit there and often i'll come home and kind of like oh arthur and i've
07:00been watching the football i don't know whether you're mad or whether this is the truth
07:06crack open a couple of beers on the footy and the lads are yeah so the good news his weight has gone
07:14up a little bit oh okay so he was 3.58 he's now 3.89 and eating wise is he eating steadily as well
07:20he does like to graze so we got it down to sort of four meals a day two bigger ones when he had his
07:26injection yeah and two more snacky ones when we give the injection of insulin of course if he has that
07:32on a completely empty stomach then his blood sugar levels are going to drop dangerously low so we
07:36need to always time the insulin with food but lots of cats prefer to feed on their own terms
07:42you know they just like to i love that we're going down to four meals and i think yeah i smiled
07:47yeah yeah i understand that yeah okay let's have a little look at your results then arthur
07:53the app on carina's phone allows her to print out graphs showing the ups and downs of arthur's blood
08:01sugar level over recent days and you can see it spiking up and down up and down up and down
08:06and that correlates both with the insulin wearing off but then also he's going to have food so where
08:12you can see this curve going up to the top it's where the insulin's worn off so that's where he
08:17needs another dose of insulin the aim of the treatment is to moderate arthur's blood sugar level
08:23and make it less erratic if we leave diabetes untreated it can lead to secondary problems things
08:29like cataracts but in worst case scenario it can actually put them into into a coma so what we're
08:34trying to do is keep them in a nice band in the middle one thing that we could maybe do is run a
08:39blood test looking at something called fructosamine which is almost like a historical test so it tells
08:45us what the blood sugar levels have been doing on average over the last three weeks which is quite a
08:50nice way to kind of look back and go on average have we had good glucose control that's incredible
08:56so i think that might be quite a good thing for us to do today if you're happy with that yeah
09:01absolutely yeah i think it would be a good thing is he going to climb in that he might
09:05do you want to see if you can get back in your uh no it's pretty chill oh here we go he's like
09:12actually he does it in his own time absolutely yes that's cats she should
09:17ably assisted by vet nurse alice james collects the blood sample from arthur
09:33your hand is actually beautifully positioned for me to lean on glad i can help
09:40thank you he's such a good cat
09:46james is hoping that lab tests on this blood sample will give him a better picture of arthur's
09:57blood sugar levels over the past three weeks okay here we go right lovely we're
10:03we'll get those blood sent away and we'll give you the recall results and go from there
10:06all right okay we'll speak to you soon take care bye
10:10next to see the vets today is sarah with her king charles spaniel
10:32good morning who have we got here eddie lovely if you'd like to take a seat i'll be with you
10:42shortly to admit him thank you
10:43vet nurse ella checks in eight-year-old eddie for a biopsy
10:49good boy
10:53how is eddie today he's all well hi pal good stuff okay so today we've got eddie in for a general
11:05anesthetic and a little lump removal on his chest is that right yeah all righty bless him what we'll do
11:11then is we'll take him on through get him all settled in a kennel um and we'll give you a call
11:15with an update when we can oh good boy he's lovely we'll take him out the back then and get him
11:21sorted all righty all right baby and we'll give you a call when we can thank you all right good boy
11:27i'm keen to learn more about why sarah brought eddie to the vets in the first place
11:37how did you find the lump it's like a little marble just could feel it under his skin
11:42didn't sort of feel attached to anything so it kind of didn't worry me to be honest it was only
11:48amy that said well without testing it yeah because you've known amy for a while haven't you yeah since
11:54since we've had ed we we followed them here complete trust in them tell me about him as
12:01personality he's a cheeky chappy he always has the last word as eddie is amy's patient she'll be
12:07performing the surgery to remove the lump we've seen him a couple of times and we've tried doing
12:13a few tests beforehand to try and work out what the lump was whether it was a benign lump or a
12:20malignant lump but unfortunately that came back inconclusive eddie is at the age where we start to
12:26be a bit more worried about more complicated things creeping in eddie was originally owned by sarah's son
12:33michael who tragically died from a brain tumor in his teens he's definitely very special in sarah's
12:39family so he was sarah's son's dog who unfortunately isn't with us anymore so definitely means a lot to
12:46sarah and definitely meant a lot to her son michael as well and helped him through a lot
12:50and so yeah he's a i mean all of our patients are very special to everybody but he in particular is
12:56very special to farah
12:57uh-oh vet bills don't worry dad i'll eat them haha see you later
13:12fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance
13:15oh i thought you were here about my allergies no no it's fine it can be about you fern britain
13:23inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance
13:25at the vets amy is leading the surgery to remove a lump from eddie the king charles spaniel
13:37so he's had some sedatives just to make him a little bit sleepy so he's less aware of what's
13:44going on nice and relaxed nice and relaxed yeah um so what's going on what i'm giving now is the
13:49general anesthetic so this will go into his vein and will knock him out so he's quite sleepy now
13:56how do you know so we're looking for reflexes so most of his reflexes will disappear when he's
14:04under an anesthetic oh okay he's not in any distress he probably doesn't even know what's
14:10happening he's a bit snoring he's just having a nice little snore he's fast asleep that's snoring
14:16not ground it is snoring yeah so you've kept him nice and warm so yes i'm not scrubbed up because
14:24we're not actually in the theater yet okay and when did you find his his love um so his owners noticed
14:33it um a few weeks ago and they were keen not to have to operate on him unless we really needed to
14:41so we did a couple of investigations to try and work out whether this little lump here
14:45on his neck it's maybe about the size of a blueberry
14:48without a laboratory test it's impossible to know if eddie's lump is benign or malignant
14:54so benign lumps a lump that we don't need to worry about it's it is a lump but it's not going to
14:59spread elsewhere yeah it's not going to just part of the aging process yes whereas a malignant lump
15:04would be sort of a cancer that's going to spread elsewhere and cause problems so we'll cut it out
15:10today and then we'll send the entire lump to our external lab and they'll have a look at it under
15:15a microscope to tell us then exactly what the lump is okay and then any further treatment you
15:21talk about from there okay as a pet owner when you do and you're stroking the cat the dog whatever
15:27and you find a little lump feel something when is it important that you think i must have this
15:33investigated so i would always get it checked straight away so i would always go and see it
15:37back i think the difficult thing is is that to me and to you a lump is a lump until we start
15:42investigating it so it's always worth having it checked by a vet and then those further
15:46investigations to work that out the weight of what you're doing is huge because for the pet owner
15:54who's waiting i mean this animal is everything part of the family yes it is very much at the forefront
16:00of our minds when we're in a consultation talking to those owners and to the families because you've
16:05known eddie all his life yeah so we first knew him as a young puppy um so yes he's he's i mean he's a
16:12lovely dog and he's definitely um seen his family through a lot um which makes him extra special for
16:18them amy shaves the area around eddie's lump ready for the operation even this bit you have to do with
16:28infinite care well it's the bit that the owners see so they like a neat clip
16:37anything to keep the surgery nice and tidy
16:39he's a lovely boy isn't he eddie's in safe hands as they finish his surgical prep before he's
16:50transferred to the theater the grove vets sees a lot of rescue animals through its doors rescue centers
17:02allow people to give an animal the chance of a new home and a new life
17:08and when the cat or dog comes from abroad that can come with extra responsibilities martin who
17:15originally came to bristol from northern ireland adopted his rescue dog barney from macedonia
17:22hello hello hello you got barney yes good boy sit down sit today martin has brought barney to be
17:32castrated a requirement of his being adopted from the rescue center because he came from overseas
17:40barney also had to be tested for the bacterial disease brucellosis before he could be adopted by
17:45martin i got barney last march almost a year now and he's been great he's he's pulled all the heart
17:54strings so he has and i love him to bits and looking forward to spending many happy years with them
18:06barney will be under the care of head nurse ella and vet james so this is barney he is a little
18:13rescue dog that's come down for a castration today so we're going to be doing the operation
18:18and then that's involves taking away his testicles and then he will have the surgical site stitched
18:24up he'll go home and recover hopefully in the next sort of five to seven days he should be
18:28totally unaware that anything's happened there's lots of benefits to castrating dogs but in barney's
18:33case this is actually a requirement of his rescue charity as well there we go we don't always
18:41recommend castrating every single dog but for those dogs that are perhaps over sex so they are
18:46humping lots they're maybe roaming to try and reach other dogs then yes neutering them can really help
18:52so in barney's case he is at an age where he is sexually mature so it hopefully will help take some
18:59of those should say desires down a little bit as well good boy before the operation begins james injects
19:08barney with an anaesthetic they also use an anaesthetic gas to make sure he remains fully unconscious
19:17so that's the tube just going down his windpipe so we can connect that up to anaesthetic and then
19:23that will keep him nicely asleep for us happy yeah cool good delicate procedure
19:32right that's looking good
19:43barney is carried to the operating theatre while james prepares for surgery
19:47all right we're going in
19:59so i've pushed the testicle forwards so we make the incision just in front of the scrotum
20:05and then that helps with healing and then you basically just
20:10carefully go through each of the nares until we can get the testicle out
20:17ella monitors barney's vitals during the operation which will take about 25 minutes
20:24how's he doing is he okay your end yeah all good how's his blood pressure yeah good 120 over 70. oh nice
20:31okay nice as i guess what i like to see yeah good so this will be the first ball coming off so i'm going
20:40to make the cut between the two clamps and then that will free the first testicle
20:48we just got to do all again now for number two
21:07so that's the last stitch ella perfect yeah blood pressure is good so good
21:12there we go done right let's wake him up three swabs one blade one needle all accounted for
21:26i'll just slowly start waking up yeah good boy once barney starts to come round he's moved to recovery
21:33if you want to go ahead
21:40this operation has fulfilled owner martin's obligation to the rescue charity and now they
21:46can both start to look forward to their future together i didn't um have experience with a male dog
21:54being castrated before and i thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was
21:59i didn't feel a thing it has been plain sailing really while james has been taking good care of
22:07barney amy is preparing to operate on much loved spaniel eddie to remove the suspect lump
22:14as this is a minor operation i don't need to scrub in or wear a mask
22:31how's this anesthetic down fella yeah okay it's good to copy if i cut yeah yeah
22:36so i'm just going to start cutting now yes so we make a little elliptical incision around the lump
22:45through the skin and because i don't know exactly what this lump is i'm taking a fair margin of
22:54normal tissue around the outside of it so you don't want to actually puncture that no case anything
23:00escapes so you want to take the lump in its entirety yeah and hopefully with a bit of normal
23:05tissue around the outside the cancer cells can be in the local tissue but not part of the main lump
23:13and so you just want to take out enough tissue that it's unlikely that you're going to leave any of
23:18those potential cancer cells behind you're all right there darling when you wake up it'll be gone
23:29there we are getting that out whatever it is you've done lots of these i suppose quite a
23:36few yes are they quite common lumps are very common yeah some are more straightforward than others
23:42now it's about closing up the defect really and those will be dissolvable so these are all
23:50dissolvable stitches going in now yeah and then how long does that last before you know the wound is
23:58about 10 days yeah 10 days that we will be totally healed so eddie will have to be walked in a controlled
24:04way for the next 10 days so he'll just go out for walks but staying on the lead we don't want him to
24:10do too much that might risk bursting his stitches open yeah which in the long run will mean a much
24:17quicker recovery time so eddie can get back to doing what he wants to do his normal life more quickly
24:27so yeah so this will be the last stitch now he's remained stable really hasn't he he has which is what
24:33we like yes no drama so lovely to see the respect that you are giving them yeah absolutely we want
24:46them to be comfortable and as it yeah as we've been saying they're part of our families so yeah um there
24:54we go so we'll now take the clamps off well done it'll be interesting to see how he wakes up how do you do that
25:01we just allow him a little bit of time to settle here with the inhaled anesthetic turned off but
25:08with some oxygen and then when he starts to swallow uh we'll be able to take his tube out and then we'll
25:14carry him through to our kennels where he'll recover with the nursing team cozied up it's important to keep
25:20him warm it's crucial to keep eddie warm after the surgery because the anesthetic makes it harder for
25:26animals to regulate their own temperature and we like to keep hold of them for a couple of hours
25:31just to keep an eye on them make sure that they're well recovered from their anesthetic and that
25:35there aren't going to be any complications from the point of view of the anesthesia yeah
25:42the lump itself is stored in a special preservative and will be sent for tests so then that will be
25:48picked up tonight by the couriers from the lab and they'll process that and we'll get the results back
25:54in a few days all of this is going to be a huge bill yeah yes it's always a relief to be honest when
26:03pets are insured because although there are still financial considerations and it's something to fall back
26:08still to come james and i meet the grove's newest patient right let's pop her onto here let's see
26:22if she'll sit oh straight off
26:26good boy i'm gonna stay there and we venture outside the vets to meet animals getting a second chance of
26:34living their best lives good boy anyone that's thinking about adopting is definitely a really
26:41rewarding thing to do and gives a dog or a cat a lovely home ah stung by a bee don't judge me
26:49it'll probably happen again fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance
26:55uh-oh vet bills don't worry dad i'll eat them see you later fern britain inside the vets brought to you
27:03by pet plan insurance barney want to go in the garden in bristol rescue dog barney is recovering
27:13at home after his castration go on buddy his owner martin adopted him a year ago
27:22barney stood out for me so he did his beautiful eyes they were just piercing and they just made me
27:30fall in love with him that's a good boy good stuff and we just looked into each other's souls i picked
27:38them up and we looked into each other's souls and it was just amazing so it was and he's been my
27:45little buddy ever since
27:50come on
27:5810 days after barney's castration martin brings him back to see james
28:03the hope is that his wound has been healing up nicely
28:06hello hello yes look at you gonna come on through thank you come on barney come on in
28:15look at him all handsome i'll just shut the door behind us right is he happy up on the table i think
28:20he should be fine with that yeah okay should we pop him up then we'll have a little look how's he been
28:24since the operation he's been great he's good he's burned sparky and bubbly self again oh hello look at
28:31you he's such a good boy aren't you right what we need to do today i'm going to have a little look
28:36at what the wound's looking like if you're happy to just have a little hold of maybe up of his
28:40corner here because i'm gonna have to go to his slightly private parts and i'll just have a little
28:45look back here okay if you're happy hello you let me have a look under here okay just where that final
28:52little knot of switch material is healing up there is just a little knot there which is is sort of
28:58poking a little bit through the skin the wound itself has healed up really beautifully so
29:02i'm just wondering whether we just try and just try and nick that out yeah with a little bit of
29:07scalp yeah because he's so he's such a good boy yeah i think he probably would let us do it should we
29:11have a little go then if you want to pop him onto your lap that might work quite well because he's
29:16quite relaxed yeah if you want to uh just take him down to there let's see good boy
29:30there beautiful good boy there you go oh wow what's that so that's just gonna help that last
29:38little bit heal up so if you just keep an eye on it at home yeah and as long as it just turns back to
29:42the normal sun pink color of the rest of the wound then it's all fine with the final stitch removed
29:50barney will be able to heal fully keep it clean keep him from licking at it just keep him rested for
29:56a few more days and it should heal up beautifully on its way okay great all right thank you well done
30:02barney see you soon okay bye bye bye bye barney is just joyous to have and we love him to bits
30:12he's having a really good life here and he seems to be really enjoying himself
30:27eight-year-old eddie was brought in for surgery to remove a tumor
30:31and now he's recovered from the anesthesia owner sarah can take him home
30:35well sarah you must be dying to go and see eddie well let me just tell you i was allowed to be in
30:43on the operation and it was so amazing first of all he's lovely and toasty warm on a sort of electric
30:50blanket he was lying on his back by now asleep snoring and he had his paws out so i held his paw
30:58and tickled him i mean he was gone he was having a fantastic time so he's he's really good and now
31:05you're desperate to get him home i am yes hey baby hello darling oh he has been a superstar today hello
31:15sweetie he's been great hello sweetie oh look at you
31:25yeah you're a bit doozy aren't you a little bit spooky a little bit doozy
31:29so his little wounds under here it's got a little dressing on over the top okay and that dressing
31:36um i would try and leave the art that probably won't last very long okay he's hairy it will fall
31:40off at some point um when it falls off that's completely fine okay um so i would just leave
31:46it off once it's fallen off well you're on your way home then he's a good lad he's a good lad i hope we
31:54see you again soon all happy and smiley and he's got a little bravery award the grovet patient
32:02certificate bravest patient he's definitely been our baby baby oh that's lovely awarded to eddie with a
32:13heart right off you go go and love him and you need a cup of tea yeah
32:20eddie is heading home but for sarah it's the start of an anxious wait for the test results
32:40hello oh hi there it's james phone from the grove four days after james took a blood sample
32:46from diabetic cat arthur he phones owner carina with the results it has come back quite elevated
32:53so his reading is 454 which is sort of just over the sort of the top end of the reference range for
33:01a cat that would have sort of enough of a control over the diabetes but then the flip side of that is
33:07then i look at the graphs that you've sent through some of them are dropping actually quite worryingly low
33:13if we had the blood result that we've got and the graphs weren't dropping down into the red
33:17my instinct would be to push his insulin dose up slightly but that feels a bit risky with looking at
33:23how low he is dropping at certain periods in the day so it is a little bit of a head scratch and i kind of
33:28wonder whether it would be a good idea to get a specialist involved at this stage to give you some
33:32advice or where we should all go next in terms of dosing and things does that sort of feel like
33:38something you'd be quite keen to do or well yeah i mean we'd want to do whatever we could to try and
33:43get him yeah i agree all right i'll arrange that and then uh we'll go from there all right okay
33:50vets basically work very similar to doctors so i'm the equivalent of arthur's gp and now i want to bring
33:55in a consultant so somebody specializing in feline medicine who can just sort of help us out a little
34:01bit and see whether we might be able to tweak his dosing or change things all together and basically
34:06hopefully get his diabetes under control
34:14at home arthur continues to have regular injections of insulin
34:20arthur brings so much to our life he is a very loving cat he likes to be around people you see
34:26him sat at your feet just quietly and we'll just sit there for hours really in your company
34:32carina and her husband derek adopted arthur two years ago from holly hedge animal sanctuary on the
34:39outskirts of bristol i mean i do like all animals but i have always had cats from growing up he really
34:46pulled at my heartstrings and it was the idea of of having a a cat from a sanctuary i think that did
34:51appeal we were discussing it together the two of us myself and my husband and then um yeah we finally
34:58decided that we'd we'd like to try and adopt him and um contacted holly hedge animal sanctuary
35:04the work of this rescue center for cats and dogs wouldn't happen without the dedicated staff
35:19and volunteers good boy our team are very special we're very lucky to have the staff and the volunteers
35:26that we do have here everyone that's here really does care and they put in a lot of effort to make
35:33sure that the animals day is the best it possibly can be the assistant manager here is amber hawkins
35:43they have a lot of love to give they need someone to care for them
35:47and when we get to see them go off to a new home we absolutely love it
35:51the center is often full to capacity as some people are unable to meet the costs of keeping a pet
36:01we have had quite an influx of cats coming in recently our cattery is pretty much full to the brim
36:06at the moment a lot of cost of living crisis is meaning a lot of cats are needing to be rehomed
36:12it's never the cat's fault that they end up here bless them
36:21holly hedge finds new homes for around 800 animals every year chair of the trustees for the charity
36:29is richard baker when the animals were adopted it's a bittersweet moment because obviously we've grown
36:35very fond and very close to a lot of the animals that are here but we always know they're going to go
36:40to a better place and we can't look after them forever and everyone that's stopped to freeze
36:44up a place for us to rescue another one
36:51when cats and dogs first arrive a vet gives each animal a medical check
36:57each cat has their own space and in each pen we have water bowl food bowls loads of bedding
37:05lots of toys so they can play with things some animals only wait a couple of weeks before being
37:11rehomed while a few can be here for a year or even longer this is fifi fifi's 18 years old very vocal
37:22loves his food
37:23the center's cat garden is a special place for these well cared for felines to get some fresh air
37:36maury he is a two-year-old cat from mauritius he absolutely loves our garden loves playing loves running
37:45love sunshine when it's out he loves a cuddle he loves a run and he loves his food and he's just
37:53a really sweet boy he just needs a really loving home that's able to give him everything that he needs
38:03alongside its staff the animal sanctuary relies on a team of volunteers like helen marie
38:09who helps with the important work of cat cuddling if they've had a loving home they can come in and
38:15sort of settle pretty well but if they're maybe from the street if somebody's died and they've been
38:20out on the street for a while it takes them a while to decompress so having human company
38:25in here and just interacting with them all the time then it's really good and it brings them
38:31around quicker and then we can re-home room quicker good boy i'm gonna stay there
38:40one of the latest additions to the rescue center is dougie dougie is a labrador cross collie
38:47so he's very intelligent a lot of enthusiasm as you can see he's super super smart he would love
38:54someone active he loves company i would love to be out and about all day what we're hoping for him is
39:02that he'll find the right person if i'm in the right home that will give him what he needs an absolute
39:06wonderful life anyone that's thinking about adoption is definitely a really rewarding thing to do
39:28and gives a dog or a cat a lovely home oh i thought we were here about my allergies no no it's fine it
39:40can be about you fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance ah stung by a bee
39:48don't judge me it'll probably happen again fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan
39:54insurance in bristol the veterinary team treats a wide range of pets
40:08during the first year of a dog's life it's important to visit the vets for routine checks
40:13and treatments so little mila here she is the puppy with the best haircut in town
40:20mila a seven month old cavapoo has come for worming and flea treatment accompanied by her
40:27owner aaron and his children so what we'll do she's obviously in her for her worming tablet today isn't
40:33she but with that we'll just give her a quick check over as well and just make sure that i'm happy that
40:37she's fit and well so would you mind distracting front of course i have a little feel of her here
40:45hello lady hello lady she's so beautiful you're obviously very in love with her and we've got
40:54bailey and beau and jay very nice to see you the worming and flea treatments a dog needs are based on
41:03your local area living in this residential suburb mila will need a monthly dose which believe it or
41:09not is tailored to her weight being such a young puppy each month that we're seeing her she's putting
41:15a little bit of more weight on each time so we want to make sure that the dose of worming that we're
41:19administering is the right amount i didn't realize that so you're weighing a doggy every month before
41:24the warming pills it's quite important to make sure that she we don't either own under or overdose when
41:29it comes to obviously giving any medication but with young puppies especially it is a good idea to
41:34have quite a thorough worming and flea treatment because they are more prone to picking up worms so
41:40adult dogs when they do pick up worms they can often you know kind of cope with them a little bit
41:44better with puppies because if they do pick up worms it can actually be a lot more concerning to their
41:49health so we would otherwise recommend to do them at least every month for their most of their flea
41:55and warming treatments right i'd like to see a master class in giving the tablet that is a
42:00challenge that i will accept and we will have to hope that mila is on my side uh sorry i'm just
42:06going to nip down here and grab these scales okay so maybe somebody might be able to just pick me
42:12can i pick her up any excuse for a cuddle exactly she's lovely and warm isn't she right let's pop her
42:19onto here and see if she'll sit hello oh i'm straight off okay i know what we'll do i know oh i know what
42:28we'll do a treat on the treats at the front end you're doing really really well settlers onto here
42:36just hang on there there we go beautiful lovely so seven seven point four she is this time nice
42:44yeah so she was about six last time so she's definitely put a bit of weight on that which is
42:48which is good yeah she seems a bit bigger let's have a look i'll just add that onto her record
42:54but also as well as coming down for the uh worming tablets this is a great way to bond her to the
42:58practice so you know we're only giving her a tablet today but also loads of treats so hopefully
43:03what we're doing each time that she comes in is just making her realize that the vet's is not a
43:07scary place nice things happen we give her nice tasty treats and then if she does need to come for
43:12something maybe a little bit more involved she's sort of you know quite used to quite used to coming
43:17down yes right oh oh yeah now i mean it don't embarrass me so this is the tablet so this is our
43:26tablet so this is going to treat her for things like ticks and fleas but also lungworm and roundworm so
43:32some of the sort of more nasty parasites that we can see yes in our pets but there are also some
43:39quite nasty diseases that not only can affect pets but in theory can also spread to people too so there's
43:43a sort of a family protection here as well as just protecting the puppies so if we can all stay well
43:48yeah absolutely hopefully mila is going to think this is just just another treat so let's see ready
43:55so you popped it into a little piece of a treat the pill and and what's she taken has she taken a treat
44:04or just a pill both have gone oh no oh she knows let's see you need it she got it it's food sort of
44:15there's a good girl thank you man look at that that's the one that sounds like a good crunch yes it's
44:21gone beautiful well done there we go well done darling i'll just add her weight onto the record
44:28and just update a couple of things have you have you got her insured yeah she's with pet plant in pet
44:35plant okay i'll add that to your record as well lovely right i will put the tablet up and uh i think
44:41that's all done for another month so we'll see you back next month do the same again okay but yeah
44:45she's looking great thank you yeah no worries james has handled one of the younger patients at the vets
44:53amy meanwhile is focused on an equally cherished older pet
45:01two days after the lump on eddie's neck was removed his results are in
45:06nervous hopefully it's good news
45:16yes which is that's really good news so it's something called an infundibular cyst which is a
45:23non-cancerous um kind of dilation of the hair follicle so now that we've exercised that lump it's
45:29completely curative so eddie is a-okay he's gonna be great so i'll just give sarah and she'll be really
45:34excited to hear so yeah
45:42hi sarah it's amy calling from the vets hiya it's really good news um so yeah so don't worry he's
45:49fine so nothing cancerous whatsoever so we can not worry at all so that's all we really need to
45:56concentrate on now is just getting that wound to heal nicely and there's no reason why that shouldn't
46:01presumably he's okay and everything's okay from your end good i knew you were worried so i just
46:08wanted to get those results back to you as soon as we could all right thanks sarah take care bye
46:15she's delighted obviously there's a lot of history with sarah and eddie
46:19um so i'm really pleased for her that that's come back is benign which is always the best um best
46:24outcome sharing good news is always a relief it's always the outcome that we want all right it's
46:29okay it's okay it's okay
46:43so
46:53next time inside the vets james has to figure out how to treat a cat with a painful injury
47:12and we meet the pups that will change people's lives forever she's doing so well calm walking
47:22from them all as well which is brilliant you can't swagger when you're walking with a white stick
47:28it just doesn't look right but you can when you're walking along with your dog
47:42i'm loving this place fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan
