The new speed cameras saving lives across regional Australia

A new initiative has been introduced in NSW to combat the number of rising fatal crashes in regional and rural roads.

00:00The number of fatal crashes increased in 2023, as Australia's regional and rural roads claimed

00:14More than 90% of Aussie drivers have used regional, rural and remote roads in the past

00:19year.

00:20But many drivers admit they're breaking laws on regional roads when they believe it's safe

00:24and they have less chance of getting caught.

00:27New initiatives have been put in place to help combat the rising road toll, including

00:31new point-to-point speed cameras in regional NSW.

00:35The cameras calculate a driver's average speed between two points, and are being used on

00:40the Pacific and Hume highways.

00:42Originally designed for trucks, these cameras are now monitoring cars as well, as NSW joins

00:47the rest of mainland Australia and the ACT in adopting this tech for all vehicles.

00:53While fixed safety, mobile and point-to-point cameras are used across Australia, many experts

00:59are calling for more police presence on regional roads to help enforce safer driving habits.
