Actor, filmmaker, Oscar-winner, author and businessman Matthew McConaughey is happy to break the rules, but only after he’s read them first. He stars in the new Apple TV+ film ’The Lost Bus’ alongside America Ferrera, as well as his real life son, Levi McConaughey and mother, Kay McCabe McConaughey. The cast and creators were in London’s Curzon Mayfair to promote the film based on real events.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, ‘The Lost Bus’ is a white-knuckle ride through one of America’s deadliest wildfires as a wayward school bus driver, played by McConaughey and a dedicated school teacher, played by Ferrera, battle to save 22 children from the terrifying inferno. It’s out on Apple TV+ on 3rd October. Report by Burtonj. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn
00:00All right, if I'm gonna do somersaults naked in this sandbox, let me check it all out and see if there's any broken glass
00:14Welcome to a not rainy London now, isn't it?
00:16Look what happened. Hey, this is a very interesting project for you
00:20I know because you have your son and your mother on set. Yeah in the same way to see them at work
00:24Were you happy to like see dad at work? They get to see dad at work. Well, they've seen
00:29They've seen dad at work like like levi and the kids have been on almost all the sets i've worked on
00:35And we put them to work they take jobs on the set like levi worked in the camera department
00:39For two months before he stepped in front of the camera and took the role
00:43In this film, so they've seen me work, but we've never worked in a scene together
00:49You know to see i worked with levi on that scene and
00:53for weeks and then i told him i said look the day we go to work
00:58He's yours the character's yours i'm not going to be there as a safety net i'm not going to be there as a thumbs up or thumbs down
01:05Go in and own what you the choices you made and it was a proud moment as a dad to show up at work that day and him
01:12Not even looking over his shoulder at me for any approval like just him working with paul and him owning his man
01:18And that was a proud moment for me to see him take that ownership
01:21There's two moments in this film two different characters say we need to do things not by the book anymore
01:26I feel like that describes mcconaughey as a human as well
01:29You're not going to do things by the book when the time allows for it do you think that's a fair
01:33Well i'm more and i don't mean this as a political term i mean it as a sort of
01:38Choice-making paradigm i'm more conservative early liberal late i do like to check out the book first
01:44What are the rules of engagement how's this game supposed to be played all right if i'm going to do somersaults naked in this
01:49Sandbox let me check it all out and see if there's any broken glass we're going to jump in the pool
01:54Let's check and see if there's water in it first let's go by the book and check out the rules and regulations all right what the consequence could be
02:00After that you've created your own weather i've studied the script or have an idea of what i want out of a relationship or
02:08Or whatever that is then throw the book away now go off now call audibles now
02:17Play and that's the fun part the work is the preparation when you study the playbook of whatever it is you're doing
02:24But the play is once you're in the game you don't want to be thinking about the playbook when you're in the game
02:28So that's probably where i think you're talking about maybe you've seen me improvise or do things my own way
02:34It's based off of certain values that i've already studied and prepared for it's a pleasure to talk to you
02:41Thank you so much appreciate enjoy thank you
02:47I thought it would be an entertaining story even if it wasn't based on truth
02:52And then to know that it was based on truth gave me a little more resonance a little more
02:55reverence and purpose for reason to dive in and tell it
02:58The father son story the second chances aspect of the story the idea we've all felt like we're too late or something's too late
03:09To handle or help out or amend and when do we get those second chances how often do we just pump them down the road
03:17Over and over and over thinking that they'll always be there and then that window closes and that opportunity is not there
03:22And the idea that when you do get a second chance take that opportunity right then
03:26Then the idea of uh
03:29On a human level you know you we we have another gear that we kick into when we're on death's door
03:37That we don't give ourselves credit for and sometimes you got to drive
03:41Through hell and right down the throat of the dragon to get to get out of it. It's not a passive
03:47Kumbaya sit on the sidelines. Let's hope this storm passes
03:50Sometimes it is a lot of times. It's like i'm gonna go right down the eye of the storm to get through it
