00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Thank you very much.
01:00I'll show you. It's that, basically. That's it.
01:04And he was once asked, what's all this business about?
01:07And he said, well, my granny was an Italian.
01:10And in Italy, where she came from, it was the sign to ward off the evil eye, which in Italy apparently is called the malocchio.
01:17So there we are. Are there any hand signals that you find particularly objectionable?
01:21Yes. I think the same way, you know, the people that don't like bad grammar, if you use air quotes all the time in the wrong places, you just want to get punched in the face.
01:32That's my position.
01:34I'll be more careful in the future. I'll be more careful.
01:37All right. Now, who have we got with us today?
01:39We've got Tom back. Tom Chaffer-Cook, who's had such a run.
01:43Fantastic. A software developer from Horsey in Shropshire on Seven.
01:48Fine to be an Octo-Champ today. You've played like a crazy guy.
01:52Are you nervous today? You shouldn't be. You've got no reason to.
01:55But you're feeling a bit shaky?
01:57A little bit, yes.
01:58There's always someone, isn't there? There's always somebody in the opposite chair who might just steal it away from you.
02:03Let's see whether it's going to be Barry Taylor. Welcome, Barry.
02:06Hi, Nick.
02:07Former sales advisor and manufacturing technician from Sunderland.
02:11And you once came home after a night shift, or was it a night out, and were denied access to your own home.
02:19What was all that about?
02:20I'd been to work on night shift, and while I'd been to work, my partner at the time had adopted a rescue dog, a Highland Terrier.
02:29Yeah.
02:29And because I wasn't there when she adopted the dog, he thought I was an intruder.
02:34All right, but you made friends with her eventually.
02:35Oh, yes.
02:36Brilliant. All right. Well, look, good luck to you both today, Tom and Barry.
02:40Big round of applause for our contestants.
02:41And Susie's over in the corner, of course, and for the first time on Countdown, historian, writer and broadcaster, it's Susanna Lipscomb.

04:39Yes, technically speaking, according to the dictionary,
04:41they're a mass noun, but you can have different types,

13:32Yeah.
13:33And that gets you one away.
13:35One away. Well done.
13:36But let's turn to Rachel and see whether Rachel can crack it for us.
13:402, 2, 8, Rachel.
13:41Harder than it looks. Leave it with me.
13:43Certainly will. Certainly will.
13:44Now we're going to turn to Susanna.
13:46And Susanna, you're a presenter, radio and television, and a lecturer.
13:52And it all revolves around history.
13:55You're a historian.
13:56What have you got for us today?
13:58Well, I think, given that Countdown is one of our, obviously, nation's foremost leisure activities,
14:02I thought we should think about leisure.
14:04In Tudor England, it was illegal for most people to play tennis or bowls or skittles,
14:11if you weren't of nobility, but it was at the same time protected in law to watch the sports of bear baiting and bull baiting.
14:22So it was illegal to kill a bull without having baited it in the ring first.
14:26And Elizabeth I loved bear baiting, which, of course, is putting a bear on a pole and then having it attacked by dogs or having it whipped by people.
14:34And this was protected so much that when it grew up on the south banks of the river next to where the globe would be and there was plays.
14:43When the plays started to affect the business of the bear baiters, they appealed to the Privy Council and the Privy Council put out an order to the Lord Mayor saying that actually plays should not be performed on a Thursday,
14:55which is when bear baiting happened, because otherwise it would affect the business of the bear baiting, which was maintained for Her Majesty's pleasure.
15:04And it wasn't actually banned until 1835.
15:07Extraordinary.
15:07So they're very different in what they took fun in.
15:10So cockfighting, that was a piece of nothing.
15:12Yeah, all those sort of things. I mean, there are so many stories of animal violence from the period.
15:16Oh, we look forward to hearing more of those.
15:18Thank you very much. She's out of the way.
15:24So, Rachel, 228, can you crack it for us?
15:27I found it eventually, if you say 50 minus 10 is 40, divided by 5 is 8, add one of the 9's for 17, times the other 9 for 153, and add the 75.
15:40Oh, well done. Well done, Rachel.
15:44Well done. And now we turn to Tom. Tom, your letters game.
15:49Start with a consonant, please.
15:50Thank you, Tom.
15:51W.
15:53And another?
15:56C.
15:57And another?

16:25A final consonant, please.
16:27And a vowel, and a vowel.
16:29Stand by.
16:50Hello, Trevor.

16:54The vowel, which means...
16:54The vowel, which means...
16:55We are going very strongly sharp.

22:33Tamboty.
22:34Tamboty.
22:36Well, strange enough, those are exactly the two words that we had down on our paper,
22:39but botty, unfortunately, is not in the dictionary, so I'm sorry about that.
22:44It's with a Y.
22:44Anyway, but Tamboty certainly is, Tom, it is a South African one for an African tree
22:51of the Spurge family with scented timber.
22:54Well, well.

24:40A ladu.
24:41Pass the ladus.
24:42Very good.
24:4378 plays 17.
24:45And Susie, we turn back to you for your origins of words.
24:49You'll enjoy this, Susanna.
24:51This is a bit of a highlight.
24:52Yes, Susie?
24:53I hope Susanna enjoys it, because actually she knows an awful lot about this subject,
24:57and we've been chatting about it actually before.
24:59It's the origin of a platonic relationship,
25:03which is defined in the dictionary as a friendship, really, that doesn't involve sexual feelings.
25:08We talk about somebody having a purely platonic relationship.
25:11It goes back, unsurprisingly, to the philosophy of Plato, which we can still read about in his dialogues,
25:18famously written in Athens during the fourth century B.C.
25:22Plato was the founder of the original academy, a very, very important man.
25:27Well, one of his most famous dialogues is the Symposium, which tells the story of an extraordinary dinner party attended by some of the leading figures of classical Athens.
25:38And over the course of the evening, it becomes very drunken, and much, much conversation.
25:43The wine was flowing, and they begin to have a very profound discussion about the nature of true love.
25:50The most distinguished of the guests at the dinner party is the philosopher Socrates,
25:54who's in fact the principal speaker in the whole of the dialogues.
25:57And very notable qualities, a great man, but apparently wasn't one of the handsomest specimens in classical Athens.
26:05Despite all of this, it wasn't long before he was fending off the advances of Alcibiades.
26:11Now, he was a society charmer, one of the best-looking men, apparently, in classical Athens.
26:18And he, as I say, fell completely for Socrates.
26:23He loved his wisdom. He saw beyond the exterior and confessed himself totally smitten.
26:29But it wasn't his lucky night, because Socrates' Plato reports have discovered the higher truth of love,
26:36which rises above physical feelings, physical lust, if you like, to become a pure love,
26:41which is based on inner spirituality and inner beauty.
26:44And so, from this, we get the idea of a deep and philosophical passion, if you like,
26:48that's platonic in every way.
26:52But the fact that there was no physical relationship is probably the bit that we remember today.
26:55But still, his name lives on, and it all goes back to the story of a drunken dinner party.
27:00Very well done.
27:02Very good.
27:07Perfect. Thank you.

32:0818 times 50 nine hundred and add seven add four one away
32:16Well done well done, but nine ten Rachel is that easy or is that really tricky?
32:21There are a few ways one you could have said six minus two is four times five is
32:2820 times four is 80 add 50 for
32:33130 and times it by seven
