01:00But, don't miss face, because today, I am told, is Global Belly Laugh Day.
01:07Global belly...
01:08That sounds like fun.
01:09It's ridiculous, isn't it?
01:10Well, it's...
01:11If you were in Somalia, you wouldn't be having too many belly laughs.
01:13Calling it global, I think, is pushing it a bit.
01:15When was the last time you had a good old belly laugh?
01:19Um, probably something very crude, if you know me, which you do.
01:22Have you seen them autocorrect? Have you ever seen that website? No autocorrect. I'll make a note
01:29Some of them are quite rude, but there was a list of the best ones from 2012
01:33Yes, and it's you know when you're using your phone and it's got the predictive
01:35Yes, and it comes up with stuff that you don't mean to type. Oh, right and good stuff on there
01:41Autocorrect. I'll look it up. Autocorrect, yeah. Yeah, Google that. I mean what creates a belly laugh?
01:46It's just humor, isn't it? Oh, cats and babies. They do funny stuff, don't they?
01:50Little Pip actually, my nephew. Yes. He won in a couple of weeks. Yes. And he danced at the countdown theme tune
01:56Very good indeed, but who's with us here today?
01:59David Williams, a retired actuary from Formby in Merseyside and went all the way to the semis in 2000
02:05Welcome back. You've grown up sons and you're a massive Liverpool fan supporter and somebody suggests
02:12That you may well live near Brendan Rodgers. Is that true? It is indeed. Next door?
02:17He lives at the back of me. Really?
02:20Any good chap?
02:22Well, there's an eight foot high garden fence and he's got a long garden, so
02:26I need a step ladder and binoculars. Is that a protective sort of fence?
02:32We don't really want him coming into our garden all the time, do we?
02:37I'll be sure that somebody tells him all about that.
02:39And you're joined by Chris Davies, a student at John Moores University in Liverpool
02:43So, is this a battle of the Scousers? Are you a Liverpool-born chap?
02:48I'm from the Whirl, but that's pretty close. I don't mind being associated with Liverpool
02:53Are you allowed to be a Scouser?
02:54Yeah
02:54OK, they can be a bit precious about this
02:56And you won the final of your series back in 2009
02:59So that's a big challenge you've got on here, David. You've got a winner. You play in a band at Weddings and Functions
03:06What sort of instrument do you play?
03:08I play keyboards
03:09Yeah
03:10My friend plays guitar
03:11What's the band called?
03:13Called Chasing Amy
03:13Chasing Amy?
03:15Not caught it yet?
03:16Not yet, no. Working on it
03:18Give it time. Great to see you both here, Chris and David. Big round of applause

11:56ten plus one eleven eleven times seven seventy seven take a one off seventy six one times nine
12:03perfect six eight four yeah bravo very good
12:0637 to 19 so you sprung into an early lead there but now it's time to uh look to margaret margaret
12:17what have you got for us well well yesterday we talked about um opera and things that went on
12:25on stage and and as you know i'm very keen on opera and i'm also very keen on animals particularly
12:30little furry ones like pussycats um but i've seen some operas where the animals have actually been
12:38quite distracting and they always say you shouldn't act with children and animals well i don't think
12:41you should be in the audience while there are certainly animals on the stage i'll express
12:46views about children but if you've ever seen a performance of carmen when the toreador comes on
12:52and he's supposed to be singing on horseback and you don't pay any attention to him at all you're
12:56looking at the horse's head the bloke who's hanging on to the horse's head tightly thinking is it going
13:01to bite him is it going to buck and knock the toreador off and you're completely distracted you don't pay
13:07any attention to what's going on and there was one which i found even more distracting recently at
13:12covent garden that was a soprano sitting on a white shiny leather sofa very elegant evening dress
13:19and she had this beautiful black cat the jeweled collar sitting next to her and you see is it alive
13:27is it real cat it was moved its head everything it must be real it couldn't be mechanical it looked
13:32too lifelike well how they got her to sit there i know cats like to spend most of their time sitting
13:37or lying but it's not normally where you want them to sit or lie and certainly not for it on a stage
13:42with a whole lot of things going on this cat was just there thinking how they kept it there what's it
13:47you know what's it doing not paying any attention to the singer at all and when she'd finished the
13:52aria she undid the collar and the cat shot off into the wings presumably somebody was holding a fish
13:58up or something got it off the stage so it was a live cat it was a live cat but it it completely took
14:05certainly my attention uh my mind off whatever was was uh was going on well yeah but you're a big cat
14:11lover you and rachel yeah i thought you were going to say that somebody was wiggling its head and it
14:16was a dummy sort of thing no no no it was real beautiful sleek animal excellent stuff but now
14:22it's time for a tea time teaser which is link pang and the clue it's about lying down in the strangest
14:29of places it's about lying down in the strangest of places
14:35welcome back i left with a clue it's about lying down in the strangest of places and the answer

16:34And your six?
16:35Lupine.
16:36Lupine, yes indeed.
16:38Chris?
16:39Pineal.
16:39Pineal.
16:40Pineal, Susie?
16:42Yes, it's a botanical term and it's a small leaf or branch on the stem of a fern.
16:47Of course.
16:48It's absolutely excellent, well done.
16:49Of course it is, very good.
16:55Very good.
16:56Lupine, however, we're aware of that.
16:59Yes, wolf-like, very good.
17:00Very good, 44 to 19.

18:17I think seven.
18:19Okay, David?
18:20Imagos.
18:22And Chris?
18:23Isogamy.
18:25Is this another one of your...
18:26I'm not even sure if I'm pronouncing it right.
18:28Well, let's have a look.
18:30Can we help Chris on this one?
18:32We can.
18:32Well, I'm sorry for all these very complicated technical definitions.
18:35This is a term from biology, not botany.
18:37Isogamy is sexual reproduction by the fusion of similar gametes.
18:44All to do with cell reproduction.
18:46Very clever of you, Chris.
18:48I did know that.
18:49You did?
18:50Well done.
18:51I'll spot it.
18:52Very good.
18:53Now, any improvements?
18:55Imagos are the sort of first stage of a butterfly, for example.
19:01Right.
19:01Anyway, that's very good.
19:02No, we had fives otherwise.
19:04Imagos and Mossy.
19:08Very good.
19:09So we failed slightly.
19:09They were too rather curious, weren't they?
19:11Let's see.
19:1251 to 19.
19:13Chris, off you go.
19:16A consonant, please.
19:17Thank you, Chris.

19:35Another one.

19:52Here we go.
19:55Here we go.
19:55Here we go.
19:56Here we go.
20:26Yes, Chris?
20:27Seven.
20:28A seven.
20:28David?
20:29Seven.
20:29All right.
20:30Chris?
20:31Cardoon.
20:33Good word.
20:33Both of them?
20:34Very good.
20:36Now then, Margaret.
20:37Just to explain what a cardoon is, it's a tall, thistle-like plant, which is related
20:42to the globe artichoke.
20:45Anything else?
20:46You'd have lardoon instead, which is another spelling of the lardon, the small cube of
20:50bacon.
20:51Yeah.
20:52That's there for another seven.
20:53And we had one more, I think, Margaret, didn't we?
20:56We had carload.
20:58Yes.
20:58Carload.
20:59A carload of people.
21:00Yeah.
21:01Yeah.
21:02That's what it seems.
21:02Very good.
21:03All right.
21:0358 to 26.
21:05And David, it's your letters game.
21:08Consonant, please, Rachel.
21:10Thank you, David.
21:11M.
21:12And another.

21:36D.
21:39And another consonant, please.
21:41And the last one.
21:42P.
21:44Clock time.
21:44And another.
22:10Yes, David seven Chris seven all right David pounder a pounder Chris Monde Monde
22:25happy about that pounder yes quarter pounder for example yeah nine pounder very good anything else
22:32we have unroped to unrope is there is a verb to detach oneself from a rope and that's a slightly
22:40ugly but ropes of course get knots in them and the French were not his n-o-e-u-d which I cleverly
22:48spotted are very good and it's also of course speed in French of a boat traveling along okay
22:55very nice for what it's worth 65 to 33 and now I think Susie we turn to you all our attention
23:05if they're focused on what you've got to tell us origins words well I had a lovely letter from
23:10Richard and Elizabeth Posford who live in Essex and they asked me for the origin of a busman's holiday
23:17why do we talk about busman's holiday which is one which is spent doing exactly the same thing that
23:21you would be doing at work and the earliest record that we can find is from an edition of the English
23:27Illustrated magazine and that was 1893 and at that time buses were horse drawn which gives rise to
23:35the most popular suggestion for the origin of this phrase which is that any bus driver who became really
23:40attached to his horses would spend his days riding on his own vehicle to make sure that the horses were
23:45looked after properly but there is another suggestion and I think it's a much more plausible one and that
23:50goes back to the word busman not busman but busman which is b-u-z-m-a-n and that was a piece of
23:5619th century thieves slang that meant a pickpocket it probably comes from the sense of buzz as in to
24:03talk rapidly so one of these pickpockets would entertain or somehow get the victim in conversation
24:13while the other one would pick his pocket and since pickpockets never take a break I think that's a
24:17much more likely origin for a busman's holiday. A busman will end up. Yeah a busman's holiday. Very good thank you
24:22wonderful stuff as ever but now 65 to 33 sees Chris in the lead and Chris it's your numbers game so there's
24:34Rachel. Okay I'll have one large please. Thank you Chris. One from the top and five little ones coming up for you
24:40and this next round the numbers are 1, 6, 5, another 6, 10 and the large one 100 and your target 381.
24:52All right we have one of them He's going to be my target Значит
24:533, 8, 1.
24:555, 4, 3, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10 and 10.

25:25I've got 380, but I haven't managed to write it down.
25:27380. David?
25:28381.
25:29Well done. Let's hear from you, David.
25:3110 minus 6 is 4.
25:3410, sorry. 10 minus 6 is 4.
25:37100 minus 5 is 95.
25:39100 minus 5, 95.
25:41Multiply is 380.
25:43Plus 1.
25:43Very well done. 381.
25:45Very crisp. Well done.
25:49Very good.
25:49We're catching up there.
25:5165 to 43. Time to go.
25:53But now it's time for a Tea Time Teaser.
25:55And the teaser is Jan Booth.
25:57And the clue, Jan Booth sails around to get this.
26:00Jan Booth sails around to get this.
26:18Welcome back.
26:19I left you with a clue.
26:20Jan Booth sails around to get this.
26:23And the answer is a John Boat.
26:25What's a John Boat?
26:27Susie?
26:27Well, it's an American term for a small, flat-bottomed boat
26:31with square ends, which is used on inland waterways.
26:35Sounds like a punt.
26:35Bigger than that, possibly, do you think?
26:38Well, no, it's a small, flat-bottomed boat.
26:40Flat at both ends, yeah.
26:42It could well be.
26:44I have never seen one, and they're obviously only in America.
26:47OK.
26:48All right.
26:48I think that'll do us.
26:50Thank you very much, indeed.
26:5165 to 43.

28:21Well done.
28:22Now, you can't get much better than that, I would have thought.
28:24Well done.
28:2573 to 51.
28:26Now, Chris, are you going to extend your lead with this letters game?
