00:00Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio. Here we are, hi Summer, and of course it's time for take a little dip now and again in the warm waters perhaps, but fairer thought for that American swimmer, Lynn Cox, who on this very day, 30 years ago, slid into the icy waters and swam from the United States to the Soviet Union.
00:22That must have been pretty cold. Took the plunge. It's only 2.7 miles, but in a bathing suit in those cold waters. Yeah, that's a chilly old thing. How about you? Are you a sleek otter?
00:36Well, Kate last week was talking about when she did the ice swimming and she managed a few minutes. And we go to the Banya, the Russian spa, and you go into the sauna, which is really hot, much as the normal sauna, and then they beat you with branches.
00:48And then what you have to do is go and stand under an ice bucket, chuck a couple of ice buckets of water over yourself, and then go and dip in the literally ice-cold water.
00:58What's the beating bit then with the birch?
01:01I think it's called perenya, something like that, and these big burly Russian guys come in with their birch branches and you're just lying there, and as they're hitting you and the air's moving, it gets even, even hotter.
01:10Really?
01:10But yeah, you feel great afterwards.
01:12Tingly, I bet you...
01:13It's like a cross between a hostage experience and going through a car wash.
01:16Well done. Lovely. Now, who's with us? Michael's with us. He's back. He's got five wins to his name now, and his casual approach seems to be working.
01:27Now, you're joined, Michael, by Tyron King, an auditor from London, and in your spare time, when you're not auditing, what were you?
01:35Well, I do a lot of cooking, a lot of sports, but yeah, I think on the weekends I like to have friends around and kind of spend Saturday cooking, and they bring the drinks.
01:45And maybe your baking and cooking is, you know, your creative side coming out, because people always rather untindely say that auditing is not the most creative of sports.
01:56I know, and on the whole it might be fair, but I think my parents are both artists, so I kind of like to think I have a bit of creativity in there.
02:04Indeed.
02:04And that probably does come out with the cooking, yeah.
02:07Excellent. Well, good luck to you both. Let's see how your auditing skills come out in the numbers now, Tyron. Good luck to Michael and to Tyron. Big round of applause.
02:20And over the corner, Susie, of course, and for the last time before she heads back to her animals, it's Kate Humble, and you're coming back soon, because your stories are wonderful.
02:29I'd love to. Thank you very much.
02:31All right. Now, Michael, let's get down to business, shall we?

11:23A risky six.
11:24Mm-hmm.
11:25Michael?
11:26Visual.
11:26Tyron?
11:27Vilius?
11:28Um, how are you spelling it?
11:30A single L.
11:31V-I-L-U-R-U-S.
11:34No, you will find villus with a double L, but not villius, I'm afraid, which is very bad luck.
11:39That's an anatomical term, but not there, I'm afraid.
11:42Sorry.
11:43So, well done, Michael, on that one.
11:45And Kate?
11:46Susie?
11:47Um, there is a seven there, um, which is advisal.
11:52Advisal?
11:53Mm-hmm.
11:53The action of advising somebody or something.
11:56Thank you for that.
11:5728 plays for 15, and it's numbers now for Tyron.
12:02Hi, Rachel.
12:03Can I have four from the top, please?
12:04You can, indeed.
12:05Four large ones and two little ones coming up, and these two smalls are six and seven.
12:11And then the big four, 50, 100, 75, 25, and the target, 547.
12:21547.
12:22I'll see you next time.
12:44Yes, Tyron.

12:56And Michael?
12:57No.
12:57No?
12:58No.
12:59Tyron?
13:006 times 100.
13:01Michael might kick himself.
13:026 times 100 is 600.
13:04Minus 50.
13:05Yeah, he's kicking himself already.
13:07550.
13:08And then 75 by 25 is a 3.
13:11So we take that away.
13:12Yep.
13:13547.
13:14Well done.
13:14Well done indeed.
13:17And it pushes you right up now against Michael,
13:20only three points behind, as we turn to Kate.
13:22What have you got for us today, Kate?
13:24Well, I thought I'd talk a little bit about the joys of walking.
13:29And Susie and I were talking about this a little bit earlier
13:31because both of us have gone through the trials and tribulations
13:36of writing books.
13:38And I find that walking can be a really good way of just,
13:41if there's something about the rhythm of it
13:43that brain kind of frees itself.
13:46And the other lovely thing about walking,
13:48particularly, I'm very lucky,
13:50but where I live in the Wye Valley in Wales,
13:53we've got beautiful woodland and farmland.
13:55So you feel really connected to the seasons.
13:58You notice all the little things that are changing.
14:00But I think one of the things that I love about walking are the unexpected encounters that you can have.
14:08And I know it's the middle of the summer now and we don't want to be thinking about Christmas.
14:13And I am not a big fan of Christmas, I have to confess.
14:16So we spend Christmas down on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales,
14:20which is absolutely amazing part of the British coastline.
14:23And one Christmas day, we were there, myself and my husband and the dogs, obviously.
14:29And it was the most beautiful day.
14:30Clear blue skies.
14:32The sea looked like the Caribbean.
14:34And we were walking along the sand.
14:36There's a beach called Oxwich Bay.
14:37And it's just this wonderful expanse of sand.
14:40And we were walking along there and just couldn't believe that there was nobody else.
14:44We had the beach entirely to ourselves.
14:46And then in the distance, we could see that actually there were some figures kind of coming towards us.
14:51And as they got closer, we were sort of looking,
14:54couldn't quite work out who they were or what quite was going on.
14:59And as they got closer, we realised that there were two people walking.
15:03And there was one person in a wheelchair.
15:05And this wheelchair was just dancing across the sand in the sunlight.
15:11And it was the most beautiful.
15:12It was one of those things that you hope,
15:15even when you're old and dribbling and you can't remember a single thing,
15:18that you remember this absolutely joyous vision.
15:21And we met in the middle of the beach and said sort of happy Christmas to each other.
15:26And the man that was in the wheelchair was just whizzing around.
15:29He didn't stop.
15:30He just whizzed around us and then went off into the distance.
15:33And a couple of years later, I saw him again.
15:37And he was with a carer.
15:38And I just said, I hope you don't mind, but, you know, two years ago,
15:42I saw this man on the beach.
15:44And it's just always made me happy.
15:46It's given me a lovely Christmas memory.
15:48And now we meet every Christmas on the beach.
15:51And it was just because we went for a walk on Christmas morning.
15:54What a beautiful story.
16:00A lovely story.
16:01Beautifully told.
16:02What a lovely.
16:0428 plays 25.
16:06Michael on 28.
16:07It's Michael's letters game.

22:59Well oiled.
23:01Kate and Susie?
23:02Have you oiled?
23:05Can you, if you put an R in front of that, is it a word?
23:07You can have roiled, absolutely.
23:09Yes.
23:09That's right, roiled.
23:11See.
23:11Indeed, I know this one.
23:12It really roils.
23:13It moves in a really turbulent manner, or if it is, it's roiling.
23:17It's a great word, very evocative word.
23:19Roiled, yeah.
23:2054 to 44, ten points in it.

24:25Michael. Seven. Yes, Tyron. I'll try an eight. Brave man. Michael. Reliant. Tyron. Starline. Oh, I had everything crossed for you there, Tyron. No, star-like, but it's not star-line. I'm sorry. Bad luck. And Kate and Susie? I got reality as a seven, but Susie got an eight. Entrails are there. Entrails, indeed.
24:51Well done, Susie. 61 to 44, Michael leads as we turn back to Susie for her wonderful origins of words. Now then, Susie, tell us.
25:05Well, I've been a bit remiss because I want to pay credit to somebody whose blog I absolutely love and I read very regularly. And in fact, she inspires me quite often for my dictionary corner pieces.
25:15And she's Jen Jenison and she writes a blog called Word Stories, uses the Oxford English Dictionary, but somehow just really injects quite a lot of magic and life into her story.
25:24So free blog. I really recommend it. I'm going to talk to you today about the word tidy, because the modern word tidy comes from the English tid or tide, which meant time, hour or season.
25:35And it's the origin of our modern word tide, the tide of the sea, as well as tidings.
25:41And tidings were originally announcements, of course, as an important event.
25:45We think about the angels coming after the birth of Jesus. I bring you good tidings of great joy.
25:52We speak of Yuletide as the time of Christmas, the season of Christmas.
25:57There's woe betide you, incidentally, means may sorrow come your way.
26:01And the betide here means carried towards you as though by the tide of the water.
26:06Some of the earliest mentions of tidy are in that sense of timely.
26:11So if you were tidy, you were punctual, really, or it came at the right time.
26:15And from there, embrace the idea of something being abundant like a crop or harvest because it came at the right time or season.
26:22They were tidy. In other words, they were very positive things.
26:26And as a result, tidy developed into this sense of admirable or possessing desirable qualities.
26:33And there, in fact, Kate's told me, it stayed in Welsh.
26:35So tidy is used as a general term of approval, I think.
26:39So a tidy house doesn't necessarily mean an orderly one.
26:42It just means something that is very nice.
26:44But the meaning of tidy most in use today, orderly or clean, dates to the beginning of the 18th century.
26:50And again, it was that idea of a tidy house being a good one, an admirable one,
26:54one that you would strive to achieve.
26:57And it gives me a chance to bring in a word that I often bring up on countdowns.
27:00It's one of my favourites.
27:01To have a good tidy of the house, manically rather, before your guests arrive, is to have a scurry funge.
27:07So I have to mention that whenever I mention tidiness.
27:09But it goes all the way back to the idea of the tides of the sea and the idea of being on time at the right hour.
27:15Very good. Thank you.
27:22Excellent. So good. So good.
27:2461 to 44 as we turn to Tyron, letters game, penultimate letters game.
