Transcript
00:00From there. Right. You need locks on the doors.
00:04Okay, this is sounding kind of dangerous now.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at 10 talk show moments or sit-downs that seemed harmless then, but carry a darker meaning today.
00:14Do you think that by talking now, setting the record straight for yourself, that maybe people will be able to focus more attention on your music?
00:23Kevin Spacey's Interview with Charlie Rose
00:25Charlie Rose
00:26During the height of the hashtag MeToo movement, Brent actor Anthony Rapp spoke up against Kevin Spacey, and it marked the beginning of his downfall.
00:34He's here. He is an Oscar and Tony Award winning actor. He's also the artistic director of the Old Vic Theater in London.
00:41Up until then, Spacey had a polished public image as a two-time Oscar winner, celebrated theater actor, and respected artistic director.
00:48In a 2013 sit-down with Charlie Rose, he discussed playing Frank Underwood on House of Cards.
00:53At the time, it came across as a fascinating deep dive into his craft.
00:57What I think people might enjoy about Francis as a character is that he has no allegiances.
01:03He has no allegiance to party. It's not about Democrats or Republicans or ideology or passion.
01:09It's about opportunity to move forward.
01:12That's what he sees.
01:14But after his 2017 scandal, the interview feels unsettling.
01:17Suddenly, the line between Spacey and the manipulative character he played seems razor thin.
01:22We can't blame anyone who views him the same way they see Frank Underwood.
01:25We can go back and, I think, look through history at great leadership.
01:30And leadership that was strong and powerful and willing to do whatever they had to do in order to get something moving forward that actually benefited people's lives.
01:39Even more chilling, Rose later faced sexual misconduct allegations of his own.
01:42Ellen DeGeneres' Nice Act.
01:44The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
01:45Ellen DeGeneres wasn't just the bubbly host of her show.
01:48She was the very embodiment of kindness and inclusivity.
01:52Since I preach kindness every day, this is a big one for me.
01:54Her be kind mantra defined her brand as she danced with audiences, held surprise giveaways, and closed many episodes with, be kind to one another.
02:02But after her 2020 workplace scandal, that catchphrase feels different.
02:06A BuzzFeed investigation revealed accounts from former staffers who described a toxic workplace culture.
02:11Yeah, y'all heard I was mean.
02:12Everybody heard that I was mean.
02:13Everywhere I go, I know everyone's heard that I'm mean.
02:17We're talking about racism, antagonism, favoritism, and even sexual misconduct by senior executives.
02:22While Ellen wasn't singled out directly, many felt she turned a blind eye.
02:26Now it feels like she was preaching of a kindness that couldn't be extended to her staffers.
02:30That's awful.
02:31I realized I was chasing my employees and terrorizing them.
02:34Lance denies doping on Larry King Live.
02:37Larry King Live.
02:38In 2005, the French sports newspaper, L'Equipe, reported that Lance Armstrong had tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
02:45Armstrong immediately went on the defensive, even appearing on Larry King Live that same year to vehemently deny any wrongdoing.
02:51I've said it for seven years.
02:54I've said it for longer than seven years.
02:55I have never doped.
02:56He blasted the newspaper, claiming they were targeting him because he was a winner and reminding viewers of drug tests he had passed.
03:02Almost everyone believed him.
03:04All the while, the famous cyclist was lying through his teeth.
03:07Now, looking back to this interview after Armstrong's 2013 confession, it feels like watching one of the biggest liars in sports history.
03:14Yes or no, did you ever take banned substances to enhance your cycling performance?
03:19Yes.
03:20The confidence with which he deceived millions doesn't just feel bold, it's chilling.
03:24Dr. Phil interviews troubled teens.
03:26Dr. Phil.
03:27Phil McGraw built his brand as TV's go-to psychologist, tackling everything from family drama to teenage problems.
03:33So you never had a fight list?
03:35No.
03:35I don't even start the fights.
03:37Yeah.
03:37Families would appear on the show, and sometimes troubled teens were sent to rehabilitation programs he recommended.
03:42On TV, it looked like tough love with the promise of turning lives around.
03:46I'm going to recommend that these girls be placed outside the home for a period of time right now.
03:57Behind the scenes, it wasn't all that rosy.
04:00Over the years, some treatment centers have faced serious allegations.
04:03Former attendees described the place as traumatizing rather than healing.
04:07Even Rap or Bad Baby spoke up about her terrible experience at Turnabout Ranch in Utah.
04:12In one Florida facility, there have even been cases of missing teens.
04:16So, was Dr. Phil really helping these kids, or just selling TV entertainment packages therapy?
04:20You have to admit, he helped you a lot.
04:24If it wasn't for Dr. Phil...
04:25If it wasn't for Dr. Phil...
04:25Okay, if it wasn't for his money, you can't say it wasn't for him.
04:28Matt Lauer interviews Corey Feldman today.
04:31Matt Lauer's case is one of the most unsettling.
04:33For decades, he was the familiar face for NBC's Today show.
04:37Well, Corey Feldman is on a mission, as he describes it, to clean up Hollywood.
04:41He interviewed many celebrities, including those who spoke up about sexual harassment.
04:45In one interview with Corey Feldman, who promised to expose predators in Hollywood, the tension was obvious.
04:51That was before Lauer's own sexual misconduct issues came to light in 2017.
04:55As I'm sure you can imagine, we are devastated.
04:57Multiple women came forward, with reports ranging from inappropriate behavior in the office to serious violence.
05:03Lauer was fired from NBC almost immediately.
05:05Now, re-watching his interviews, especially the Feldman one, just hits different.
05:10It's almost as if Lauer was on the defensive the whole time, constantly interrupting Feldman.
05:14I'm the one who's trying to come forward and do something about it.
05:17Hold on, please, I'm sorry.
05:18There are thousands of people out there, Matt, who have this information.
05:22Considering his own scandal, it all makes sense now.
05:25R. Kelly denies allegations.
05:27CBS This Morning
05:28After Surviving R. Kelly aired in 2019,
05:30the public's attention snapped back to the long trail of sexual abuse allegations
05:34against Robert Kelly.
05:36I'm very tired of all of the lies.
05:39I've been hearing things and, you know, and seeing things on the blogs.
05:43And, you know, I'm just, I'm just tired.
05:45To defend himself, the singer sat down with Gayle King
05:48in what became one of the most explosive interviews of the decade.
05:51He cried, shouted, and even stood up at some point,
05:54desperately insisting on his innocence.
05:56I'm fighting for my f***ing life!
05:59Y'all killing me with this s***!
06:01At the time, some people probably saw it as over-the-top or an act of desperation.
06:05But after Kelly was convicted of abuse on a large scale in 2021,
06:09the interview feels downright scary.
06:11You're essentially watching a man perform innocence while hiding years of abuse.
06:15That disconnect between his emotional outburst and the horrific truth
06:18is exactly why this is creepy.
06:19My kids is listening to this, all of this nonsense,
06:24and I ain't been to spend no time with them.
06:26This is real.
06:27This is not a lie.
06:29Sean Combs Interviews
06:30Various
06:31The truth is, after P. Diddy's scandal,
06:34many of his old interviews take on a different meaning.
06:36Back then, he charmed viewers with his swagger,
06:38and few paid attention to the deep meaning of what he said.
06:41You're legendary for the parties that you throw.
06:43You throw a great party.
06:44Take his 2002 Conan O'Brien interview,
06:46when he joked about women and locking doors,
06:49and the audience laughed.
06:50Today, with the disturbing allegations against him,
06:52it feels like a red flag in plain sight.
06:55How about his 1999 Entertainment Tonight appearance,
06:57when he bragged that his parties might get him arrested?
07:00You're gonna hear about my parties.
07:01They're gonna be shutting them down.
07:02They're gonna probably be arresting me,
07:03doing all types of crazy things,
07:05just because we want to have a good time.
07:07It sounds more like foreshadowing now.
07:09Even his 2009 Ellen response to domestic abuse feels off
07:12after the Cassie Ventura video leaked.
07:14Now we totally understand why he didn't
07:16outrightly condemn the abusive act.
07:18Get into it.
07:19I'm not gonna do this or do that.
07:20It was a dark time for them,
07:22and I was there more as a support.
07:24That was it.
07:24Nancy Campbell panits.
07:26The Jerry Springer Show.
07:27This American talk show was the very definition of trash TV.
07:32I want them to say, after watching the show,
07:34that they learned something about life
07:36that they didn't know before,
07:38and Jerry didn't get in the way of the telling of that story.
07:42From wild drama and screaming matches
07:44to outright brawls,
07:46a lot of wild stuff happened.
07:47Yet, we didn't expect the Jerry Springer Show
07:49to be linked to murder.
07:50In one episode,
07:51Nancy Campbell panits appeared
07:53in hopes of reuniting with her ex-husband,
07:55Ralph,
07:55only to be cornered into a heated confrontation on live TV.
07:59Nan, what's going on?
08:01Ralph and I are trying to restore our marriage,
08:04and this, uh...
08:05And this trailer trash won't leave us alone.
08:09On the day the episode finally aired,
08:11several weeks later,
08:12Nancy was murdered by Ralph.
08:14It might have been intriguing to watch then,
08:16but now it's just plain dark,
08:17especially as Springer was let off the hook
08:19without any real repercussions.
08:21Jerry Springer,
08:22he just kind of blew it off,
08:23like,
08:23what do I know about it?
08:25How disrespectful can you be?
08:27It's just awful.
08:28Steve Diamond,
08:30The Jeremy Kyle Show.
08:31When 63-year-old Steve Diamond
08:32walked onto The Jeremy Kyle Show stage,
08:35he probably never thought the segment
08:36would break him in the worst way.
08:37Why'd you lie so much?
08:39If I knew the answer to that, Jeremy,
08:41I wouldn't be here.
08:42Hoping to prove he wasn't unfaithful to his partner,
08:44Diamond took a lie detector test,
08:46only for it to declare him a liar.
08:48To make matters worse,
08:49Jeremy didn't take it easy on the poor man.
08:51Just a week after filming,
08:52Diamond took his own life.
08:54ITV's Jeremy Kyle Show
08:55is facing its own crisis
08:57after news that one guest
08:58had been found dead
08:59a week after appearing on the show
09:01in an episode that won't ever air.
09:03It was heartbreaking then,
09:05and even sadder when one thinks
09:06about how things might have turned out
09:08if this domestic issue was kept private.
09:10Perhaps it may have helped
09:11if the show admitted that lie detectors
09:12aren't 100% accurate.
09:14The Jeremy Kyle Show was cancelled
09:15amid the legal fallout.
09:17Listen, I've been cancelled.
09:18Yeah.
09:18In this world,
09:19it seems now that unless you follow
09:21a certain path,
09:22you're labelled.

09:39Michael Jackson's 1993 interview.
09:41In February 1993,
09:43Michael Jackson sat down with Oprah Winfrey
09:45for a live interview
09:46watched by millions worldwide.
09:47I just wanted to let the world know
09:50that when we agreed to do this interview,
09:53you said that you would be willing
09:55to talk to me about everything
09:56and we haven't discussed
09:57one single question
09:59that's going to be asked here tonight.
10:01He gave a rare look into Neverland Ranch,
10:04presenting himself as childlike
10:05and misunderstood.
10:06Jackson even explained
10:07that the estate was for sick
10:09and disadvantaged children
10:10to enjoy themselves.
10:11But in August of that same year,
10:13Jackson faced his first
10:14sexual abuse allegation.
10:15That I have information
10:17that this investigation
10:18that started in August
10:19wasn't the first investigation
10:21involving alleged misconduct
10:23by Mr. Jackson.
10:24I'm not going to go any further than that.
10:26What was once a look into his world
10:27now looks like a prelude to his scandals.
10:29When the 2003 documentary
10:31Living with Michael Jackson aired
10:33and he admitted to letting kids share his bed,
10:35the image of Neverland grew darker.
10:37I'd found this easily
10:38the most disturbing moment
10:40of the past eight months.
10:42Even now,
10:42the King of Pop's reputation
10:44remains stained by those allegations.
10:45Which is the most disturbing
10:47talk show moment of them all?
