00:03:51Nhìn thấy thử,
00:03:52So the thing about Comfy is it's cooked in olive oil.
00:03:59It may seem like a lot of olive oil, but what you do is...
00:04:03You can keep this for a month, you can add it to salads, you can add it to dressings
00:04:07So don't worry about the amount of oil.
00:04:10So about 500 ml of olive oil, just enough oil to maybe half cover the veg.
00:04:16So I've got some basil, I've got some tarragon, for this reason,
00:04:21Tôi sẽ mang lại thêm tarrigan để gánh được, but you have dùng tợt tham trắng

00:12:56Very nice.
00:12:59So we've worked really hard to make sure that the purchasers have a great sense of quality when they walk in here.
00:13:06This has been a feature of all the Daycorp projects that we've delivered over the last 25 years.
00:13:11So this is obviously really beautifully finished, but we've all heard stories of developers that probably don't have quite that level of standard or people's bad experiences.
00:13:19So what has your company done to actually be able to reassure people that this is actually what you get?
00:13:24Recently, the state government introduced a new program called ICERT, called the Independent Construction Industry Rating Tool.
00:13:31And what it means is that purchasers can look independently at who their builder is, what reputation they have.
00:13:37So they're looking at everything across our business.
00:13:40So you can get a lot of reassurance from that.
00:13:41Absolutely.
00:13:42And what we're finding is that purchasers are out, going looking for ICERT-rated builders to try and give them that confidence.
00:13:48When they're buying off the plan, they know what they're going to get.
00:13:50And then what would this sort of apartment go for cost-wise?
00:13:53So an apartment like this is around $805,000.
00:13:56When you consider that you're so close to the transport, 45 minutes to the CBD, you've got parks, shopping, recreation, everything here, rooftop gardens, barbecues, and solar-powered all throughout the building.
00:14:09Unbelievable.
00:14:10Oh, congratulations.
00:14:11Thank you.
00:14:12You supply the olives and the crackers as well.
00:14:14Every apartment comes with those.
00:14:16It's a given.
00:14:17It's a nice touch.
00:14:18I do like it.
00:14:19I like these.
00:14:19Yeah, yeah.
00:14:22Those little things count for a lot, don't they?
00:14:31Now, if you're keen to buy in a booming suburb like Talawang, you can actually search for new developments on view.com.au.
00:14:37You can find out about the newest apartments and townhouses from the top developers as soon as they hit the market.
00:14:45This one's good.
00:14:46Oh, you'll like this one, Grigsy.
00:14:52Grigsy?
00:15:00Well, Chris, you said that you like the fresh air.
00:15:02I mean, we've been asking a lot of questions today.
00:15:04We have, yeah.
00:15:05But one for you.
00:15:06Have you been surprised by just how quickly this area is just transforming and growing at the rate it is?
00:15:11Yeah, I mean, it looks like a very well-established place, but it's only been here for a few years.
00:15:15But you know the true hallmark of a place that's on the up where it's got all the facilities?
00:15:20What?
00:15:21The birds.
00:15:22They know it's here to stay and they've taken up residence and they love it.
00:15:24They know best.
00:15:25Yeah.
00:15:26I've got one question for you.
00:15:27What's that?
00:15:27The metro station.
00:15:28Which direction was it?
00:15:29Oh, you've had enough, have you?
00:15:30Back this way.
00:15:34Want to go bold in your garden?
00:15:36You can't get much bolder than a boulder.
00:15:37Mate, you're in the most dangerous building in Australia.

00:16:17to save you time and money.
00:16:19This segment is brought to you by A&L, Australia's leader in landscaping and gardening supplies.
00:16:33There are a lot of factors that come into play when you're designing a front garden.
00:16:53There's the climate, there's the soil, there's the aspect.
00:16:55The list is as long as my arm.
00:16:57But there is one thing that strikes fear into the heart of most people and that is a sloping block.
00:17:04Well, if you can relate to our homeowners, Dan and Christy, I'm not only going to change your mind,
00:17:09I'm going to show you that a sloping block can give you a wonderful garden as well as be a real asset.
00:17:14Hey guys, how are we?
00:17:16We're very well, thank you, Charlie.
00:17:18We've made a start, obviously.
00:17:19Absolutely.
00:17:20Yeah, yeah.
00:17:20Is this your main outdoor area?
00:17:22It is, yeah.
00:17:23It's our biggest yard area.
00:17:25OK, so it's something you look on, something you really want to do something special with.
00:17:30Yes, we just have no idea where to start and what to do.
00:17:34OK, well, a good place to start is with an excavator, that's for sure.
00:17:36You guys have got a sloping block.
00:17:38Did that put you off?
00:17:39Has that been holding you back?
00:17:40Yeah, that's why we didn't know what to do, where to start.
00:17:42So, I want to work with the slope.
00:17:45I don't want to completely level it, but I do want to create some level patches so you guys can come out and actually use the space.
00:17:50I'm thinking something sort of quite rustic and native, maybe some big boulders.
00:17:55Would you be OK with that?
00:17:56Yeah.
00:17:56Yeah.
00:17:57OK, that's good because we have already started.
00:17:59So, if you weren't, this would be a nightmare.
00:18:01This is all good.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:03OK, well, leave this with me and I hope you'll be impressed.
00:18:05I'm sure we will.
00:18:16Now, we're obviously doing a fair bit of excavation work on this site and there's a few ways you can do it.
00:18:21You could get three of your mates around for a week, but by the end of the week, they certainly won't be your friends anymore.
00:18:26You could also get on a little dingo, but that's not the right tool for the job.
00:18:30What you need is a Shannon in an excavator.
00:18:33What he's done in half a day really is worth its weight in gold.
00:18:37You get a great finish and it will save you money.
00:18:39I really like using boulders in the landscape.
00:19:03I think they're underutilized. It's a fantastic way to add a bit of weight to a garden, give us that lovely natural feel.
00:19:11Now, you might think they're expensive, but actually it's only about $150 a tonne.
00:19:15So, I'm going to be using a whole trailer load.
00:19:25You can see how our boulders are really starting to retain this bank.
00:19:29And it does look like a lot.
00:19:30There is a trick with rocks, though.
00:19:32You need to add more and more and more and way more than you think you need.
00:19:35Because by the time the soil comes in and the plants grow over it, it will soften it and it will disappear and become a really nice feature.
00:19:48And up here in the top section of the garden, I'm going to be planting the bank up with a combination of natives and exotics.
00:19:54I'm going more heavy on the natives, probably about 80% and then 20% of the exotics, because we've got some here.
00:20:00We've got my Shelly of Figo, which is about to burst into bloom, and an oriental pearl as well.
00:20:04The thing I love about A&L is not only do they supply the boulders, but they do all the soil mixes, so everything for your garden.
00:20:19Here, we've got a lovely rich garden mix, which is going into our beds.
00:20:22That's going to improve the structure, help it hold on to moisture and nutrients for longer.
00:20:26Under our lawn area, which comes down from our new terracing, I'm just going to use coarse river sand, because the grass I'm going for needs really good drainage.
00:20:34So we're preparing our area for our lawn, and we're putting down some coarse river sand, because it's excellent for drainage.
00:20:56But it's well worth taking the time to get as many small stones out as possible.
00:21:00This is going to go over the top, but if you keep the small stones in there, they're going to heat up over time, and you'll get dry patches in your lawn.
00:21:06So get as many out as you can, and then we're going to spread the sand.
00:21:09In this lower part of the garden, I really want to maximize the lawn, so I'm just spraying out some curves for the garden beds.
00:21:26But you can see, this lawn space through here is going to take up a lot of the room.
00:21:30To deal with the levels, we're going to have a couple of boulders on the bottom, but the lawn is going to wrap around on a lovely gradient,
00:21:35so it's going to be much more useful than it was before.
00:21:42Your front path is such an important feature in your front garden.
00:21:46You walk on it every single day.
00:21:47In this one, I'm making it stepping stones.
00:21:50That way, it's going to slow the homeowners down, and they can really enjoy the garden.
00:21:55I'm actually using a concrete paver that looks like a natural one.
00:21:58I'm going to lay them out first, so I know they're in the right position.
00:22:00Then I'm going to mud them in.
00:22:01Well, I have to say, I'm pretty pleased with what we've got done in just one day,
00:22:12and having that machine was well worth the money.
00:22:16But with our layout done, it's now time to get onto the good bit, getting the plants in the ground.
00:22:21We've got a very heavy native scheme going on, and that's all coming up later on.
00:22:31Coming up, it's a question we've all asked ourselves at some point.
00:22:36How exactly do you milk a snake?
00:22:38There's probably 60 milligrams of venom in there, and that'd probably kill you and me about 40 times.
00:22:44Get outside and make this weekend a winner.
00:22:47Birds and the bees will be happy.
00:22:49The lawn will be weed-free.
00:22:51And let your front porch make a real entrance.
00:22:54You can sleep well knowing in front of your house it's got its best face on.
00:22:58I don't mind snakes.
00:23:05In fact, I quite like some snakes.
00:23:07And this is a friend of mine.
00:23:08His name's Roger.
00:23:09Where are you going, Rog?
00:23:10Come back here.
00:23:11Where's your head?
00:23:14Oh, he's going up my sleeve.
00:23:15Have a look at that.
00:23:18He's coming down the other sleeve.
00:23:20Oh, he's turning around and going back up again.
00:23:22Roger's a diamond python.
00:23:28He's absolutely harmless.
00:23:29And as a matter of fact, a lot of people have got diamond pythons as pets, and they make great pets.
00:23:34You're a boy, aren't you, Roger?
00:23:35But you know what?
00:23:37Australia's famous for one thing.
00:23:39Of the ten most venomous snakes in the world, we've got nine of them.
00:23:43Yep, nine of them.
00:23:45Nine that will kill you.
00:23:46So at Australian Reptile Park here in Gosford on the central coast of New South Wales, they've built a whole new facility devoted entirely to venomous snakes.
00:23:56Why?
00:23:57So they can extract more venom so we can make anti-venime to treat people who are bitten by snakes.
00:24:03You want to have a look at what's going on?
00:24:05Roger?
00:24:05Yeah.
00:24:29Mate, what a place.
00:24:31Oh, it's magic, isn't it?
00:24:32Oh, you must be in seventh heaven.
00:24:34Oh, you know, like the old one was good, but this one is just beautiful, and I've got so much room to move.
00:24:40Bill, the history of this place is fascinating, you know.
00:24:43You look back at the old pictures of Frank Wall and what have you.
00:24:46He pioneered what you do for a living.
00:24:49Absolutely.
00:24:50He literally started this program in the 1940s, and by 1949 they had the first available anti-venom on the shelf.
00:24:58How many snakes have we got here all together, mate?
00:24:59Look, I can hold 200 in this building alone.
00:25:03200?
00:25:03Yep.
00:25:04Of the snakes you've got here, how many are venomous?
00:25:07All of them?
00:25:08Mate, you're in the most dangerous building in Australia.
00:25:11I never thought of that.
00:25:15What about the giant brown?
00:25:16Where's that come from?
00:25:17King brown.
00:25:18That's what I was thinking of.
00:25:19King brown right here.
00:25:20Is that one?
00:25:21So that's a black snake.
00:25:23They're not a brown snake.
00:25:24Okay.
00:25:25Very tricky, and they're ranked at number 18 on the list, but what they lack in toxicity, they make up for in volume.
00:25:31So they can be pretty wild, but yeah.
00:25:37So they're Australia's largest venomous snake.
00:25:42So he'd be over two metres long.
00:25:43Yeah, he's over two metres long.
00:25:45And what's he weigh?
00:25:46You reckon?
00:25:46He's probably five kilo, maybe not.
00:25:49You know, between four and five, thereabouts.
00:25:52But the venom yields on these things is insane, right?
00:25:56So I'm talking the biggest venom yield of any venomous snake on the planet.
00:26:00Like, if I had an Eastern Brown, Eastern Brown's second most venomous snake in the world, it'll give me 10 to 15 milligrams of venom.
00:26:06This bloke will give me 350 milligrams.
00:26:09It fills the bottom of the cup, and the big problem with these guys is when they bite, they hold on.
00:26:14They don't let go.
00:26:15So they just start chewing, and yeah, it can be an absolute day ruin.
00:26:20So I'll just get him back in there before he does that to me.
00:26:26Now, how do you milk a poisonous snake?
00:26:29Keep watching.
00:26:31You're going to find out.
00:26:34Alrighty, so nice big female common death adder.
00:26:39You've sedated it.
00:26:40No, I wish.
00:26:41You have.
00:26:42So the process is I get her on the pinning pad here, and then I've got a nice clear Perspex disc that I use as a pinner.
00:26:49And then I get the dangerous part.
00:26:54And that's that.
00:26:55Okay, then you've got her.
00:26:57Got a quarter lure.
00:26:57Tip of their tail, yeah.
00:26:58Yep.
00:26:59And so they wait for animals to come to them, and they can encourage them by luring birds, lizards, whatever.
00:27:04Yeah.
00:27:04And then literally strike at 350 kilometers an hour.
00:27:08350 k's an hour.
00:27:10Boom.
00:27:14You ready?
00:27:15I'm ready, mate, yeah.
00:27:16All right, so let's go.
00:27:17So you're making her open a mouth?
00:27:19No, she's already getting ready, and then boom, like that.
00:27:23That amount of, there's probably 60 milligrams of venom in there, and that'd probably kill
00:27:29you and me about 40 times.
00:27:30Thanks very much.
00:27:32But we can use it to save human lives, so.
00:27:34Yeah, absolutely.
00:27:35It's incredible.
00:27:35Okay.
00:27:36You've got to do this 25 times to make one vial of antivenom.
00:27:39Wow.
00:27:40So this is the only facility in Australia that produces antivenom from terrestrial, in other
00:27:46words, land-based snakes.
00:27:47Is that right?
00:27:48Yep.
00:27:48So we're the sole supplier for terrestrial snake venom for the antivenom program in Australia.
00:27:52Wow.
00:27:53I can see the amount of fluid in there.
00:27:55There's a fair whack of fluid in there.
00:27:56Oh, yeah.
00:27:57Can you see it?
00:27:57It's like a teaspoon of venom there.
00:27:59Yeah.
00:27:59That's going to deteriorate pretty rapidly, mate, isn't it, at 30 degrees centigrade?
00:28:13Yeah.
00:28:13So you're going to put that in the freezer now?
00:28:15Straight into the freezer.
00:28:17I've already done a stack of death adders today, and then we'll process it into a bottle
00:28:20like that in a couple of days.
00:28:22Okie dokie.
00:28:22The next process is from there to the freeze-drying unit behind you, and you can see we're actually
00:28:26freeze-drying venom in there at the moment.
00:28:28Up here?
00:28:28That's funnel-web venom up there, so it's in a different container.
00:28:31Yep.
00:28:32Goes from there into a packet and gets sent all the way down to Victoria to CSL Securus.
00:28:38Yep.
00:28:38They make the antivenom, comes back here, and this is the final product.
00:28:42So we just looked at a death adder, and that's death adder antivenom.
00:28:45Yeah.
00:28:46And, mate, I want you to imagine I've just been struck on the back of a hand.
00:28:53Yep.
00:28:53Okay?
00:28:54Can you put a tourniquet on for me?
00:28:56Show me what to do.
00:28:58Alright, so we're not going to do a tourniquet.
00:28:59No.
00:29:00We're not going to wash the bite site, we're not going to try and suck any venom out.
00:29:03No.
00:29:03If you had any jewellery on here, we'd remove that, because there's a good chance you're
00:29:06going to swell up.
00:29:07Okay, yeah.
00:29:07Next thing, pressure bandage.
00:29:08Alright, so these are the good ones with the pressure guide on them.
00:29:11Yes.
00:29:12If you haven't got one, you've got to make one.
00:29:14Rub your shirt off or something else.
00:29:15Rub your shirt, your pants, whatever.
00:29:16Something else.
00:29:17So, I'm going to go over the bite site.
00:29:18Alright.
00:29:19Okay.
00:29:20Three times, like that.
00:29:21Now, that's pretty firm.
00:29:22So, we want to turn these rectangles into squares.
00:29:25Okay.
00:29:26Yeah, go.
00:29:27That's the correct pressure.
00:29:28And then, I just slowly work my way up your arm.
00:29:31You're staying as still as you possibly can.
00:29:33Yeah.
00:29:34I'm telling you, everything you want to hear is in, you're going to be fine.
00:29:37This is so tight, I can't move my fingers.
00:29:39Yep.
00:29:40That's what you want.
00:29:41That's what it's got to be.
00:29:42Yep.
00:29:43So, you haven't lost blood circulation.
00:29:44Your skin looks good.
00:29:45The colour looks great.
00:29:46Yeah.
00:29:47You've got a good capillary reflex there.
00:29:48We're going to keep this nice and straight, and we're either going to call triple zero and
00:29:50get them to come to us, or we're going to put you in the car and go straight to the hospital.
00:29:53Guys, get the death out of antivans ready, and they'll start it in the opposite limb.
00:29:58Yeah.
00:29:59As they start it, they'll start to loosen this.
00:30:02You'll feel instantly better.
00:30:04There's something like 300 doses of antivane given on an annual basis in Australia.
00:30:08Is that right?
00:30:09Yeah, about 300 people receive it each year.
00:30:10So, 300 people equates to a lot of milkings.
00:30:13Thousands of milkings.
00:30:15Okay.
00:30:16Bill, you've saved a lot of lives, my friend.
00:30:19And you know what?
00:30:20I'm going to get out of it alive, and I'm really looking forward to that.
00:30:25This segment is brought to you by Yates.
00:30:28Introducing the revolutionary Click and Grow garden care system.
00:30:33I love getting out into the garden whenever I can.
00:30:36And with the weather warming up, this weekend is a perfect time to get a few things done
00:30:41so that you'll have success right the way through the seasons ahead.
00:30:45Plus, I'll show you how to encourage wildlife into your garden.
00:30:49And to do that, install a bird bath.
00:31:00You'll be amazed at the added dimension that it really brings to your garden.
00:31:05Now, I've already put down 20, 30 mils of sand as a base.
00:31:10But the most important thing is this placement location.
00:31:13The birds need to have line of sight so they can see the water,
00:31:16but also some dense foliage around where they can dart into for security
00:31:21when the local cats start to prowl around the garden.
00:31:24And then just double-check that it's level.
00:31:34Great.
00:31:37Adding some colour, some beautiful daisies.
00:31:50These are the locally bred ones.
00:31:52And finally, place in a rock somewhere in the centre there
00:32:05so it sits proud of the water,
00:32:07so that the smaller birds and the essential little bees
00:32:10have somewhere to actually drink during the hot summer days ahead.
00:32:14Perfect.
00:32:15You can't beat a boat bath to bring in the wildlife into your garden.
00:32:19But there are a few other little chores that you can get to this weekend.
00:32:31And that includes looking after your lawn.
00:32:34Now, no one's got time to hand-weed their lawn,
00:32:37but Yates have come up with a terrific new system
00:32:39which is called Click and Grow.
00:32:41And multiple use, this nozzle, because you can use it
00:32:44for any of the Yates fertilisers.
00:32:47And in this case, the weed and feed.
00:32:50Now, it's not for buffalo lawns.
00:32:52And by the way, you've got to listen for that click.
00:32:54Now, you'll notice on the front of the pack,
00:32:55and they're all a little bit different.
00:32:57This one says maximum dial to number two.
00:33:00So on the top here, you've got the dial 432.
00:33:04Next, give your Click and Grow Weed and Feed bag.
00:33:07The pouch a really good shake just to mix all the
00:33:10all the products around.
00:33:13Connect your hose.
00:33:15Put it on nice and gently, not too strong.
00:33:18Thank you, Izzy.
00:33:19And then, away we go.
00:33:23On a beautiful clear blue sky day like today, the weeds will be dead in 48 hours.
00:33:34How good's that?
00:33:35Now, each pouch covers about 260 square metres.
00:33:39Now, the good thing is, don't worry if at the end of the time that you've covered your weeds,
00:33:45turn it off.
00:33:46Turn it off.
00:33:47And there's a small trigger at the bottom.
00:33:50You push that.
00:33:51And then, you can just, with the remainder, put the cap back on, put it in the garden shed,
00:33:56and reuse it another time.
00:33:59Here's the dynamic lifter, plant food, and, of course, soil improver.
00:34:04Give it a good shake.
00:34:05Now, as I mentioned, the click and grow system is multi-purpose, but before you add the new
00:34:11pouch and connect it, just give your hose a bit of a flush out.
00:34:16Just 10 seconds will do.
00:34:18Then, take off your cap.
00:34:20Knick it onto the nozzle.
00:34:22Listen for that click.
00:34:24Now, it was on three mixed dial.
00:34:28And then, the dynamic lifter's great for your veggies and for your flowers.
00:34:32And great for breaking up a bit of clay soil.
00:34:35The whole system is really revolutionary.
00:34:38Right, okay.
00:34:53Now, the next little task is really essential with all of your equipment that you might
00:34:58have.
00:34:59Chainsaws and shredders, and definitely your lawnmower.
00:35:03Always work on your machinery while it's cold.
00:35:06Take out the spark plug and check to see, one, it's nice and clean and not clogged up.
00:35:12Actually, that's in good nick.
00:35:14It's worth leaving the spark plug out.
00:35:16That means that there's no way that the machine can ever start causing any grief.
00:35:21Then, check the oil.
00:35:23Now, oil tends to disappear pretty quickly over time because it's something you tend to forget
00:35:30about.
00:35:31Actually, that's pretty good.
00:35:34You always check the air filter.
00:35:43Give it a bit of a brush.
00:35:48Running down the filter.
00:35:50Clamping it off like that also means you're not going to flood the carburetor.
00:36:02And, of course, while it's up there, you can then check the blades.
00:36:06Really critical because they do hit rocks and bricks and things.
00:36:10Okay, they're all actually pretty good.
00:36:11Got a nice edge to them.
00:36:13No chips.
00:36:14And then, take the opportunity to get in there and get rid of all that dead grass that you
00:36:22didn't get rid of last autumn.
00:36:25And then, return your spark plug and it's ready to go.
00:36:37With electric mowers, all you need to do is really check your battery and check the connector.
00:36:56With those couple of jobs done, the birds and the bees will be happy.
00:36:59The lawn will be weed free and looking lush and green in no time.
00:37:03And the mower is ready for another season.
00:37:05A splash of stain can work a world of wonders on your tired old garden furniture.
00:37:18A massive front garden makeover with lots of native planting.
00:37:22To catch up on any stories you've missed, or to watch exclusive Better Homes and Gardens
00:37:28content, plus loads of how-to videos, recipes and more, check us out on Seven Plus.
00:37:35Are you desperately hoping that no one pops around and sees all of those jobs you've
00:37:53been putting off at the front of your place?
00:37:55Well, it's bound to happen.
00:37:56So, best to be prepared.
00:37:58That way you can sleep well knowing the front of your house has got its best face on.
00:38:05This is the home of some young renters.
00:38:15So, for this makeover, we are focusing on some simple, easy-to-achieve cosmetic changes,
00:38:20rather than anything major.
00:38:22Instead of repainting this whole surface, we're just going to give it a really good clean.
00:38:36So, what about this outdoor furniture?
00:38:38Structurally, it's sturdy and stable, but the finish is looking a little tired, because just like a deck,
00:38:44it's exposed to the elements all year round.
00:38:46We often neglect our outdoor furniture and focus more on the deck, but the good news is,
00:38:50it's a really easy fix, and the first thing I need to do is just give it a good sand.
00:38:54Now, before I get to staining, there is an essential step that you cannot skip, and that is cleaning.
00:39:09And for that, I'm using Cabot's Deck Clean, which is specifically made for the job.
00:39:13You'll need to give it a pretty vigorous scrub to remove any embedded dirt, and then hose it off.
00:39:36Now that this is dry, I can apply the stain, and for something like this, it really pays to use a top quality product.
00:39:50So, I'm using Cabot's Exterior Varnish Stain.
00:39:53It's the perfect way to give your outdoor furniture an instant refresh, just in time for summer.
00:40:06Look at that colour go on. It's a really, really gorgeous colour called Chocolate Brown.
00:40:31It's a little bit like a hot chocolate, and that timber is just drinking it up.
00:40:35The thing I love about this product is that it's a combined semi-transparent stain and varnish in one,
00:40:41and it makes this really durable and provides protection, colour and shine to the timber,
00:40:47while still allowing that grain to come through.
00:40:55This is dirt and mould resistant, water repellent, plus it even has UV protection.
00:41:01But the best part is, it's water-based, so it dries really quickly.
00:41:04Three coats with the sand in between the first and second coat, and you're done.
00:41:08A mirror is such a valuable tool in design, whether you're inside or outside,
00:41:28because they bounce light around and they make a space feel so much bigger.
00:41:31In this case, it's also concealing a little bit of peeling paint on the wall there.
00:41:35I also love the arched shape and black frame of this one, because it's classic and timeless.
00:41:40It'll never go out of style, and it's adding a sense of elegance to this porch.
00:41:44And don't forget, outdoor rugs are a great way to ground a space and add a layer of softness, texture and comfort.
00:42:01For sure, we're a little potty for pots on this show, but with good reason.
00:42:13They look so good.
00:42:14I could have just left one large pot here, but by working with the rule of threes
00:42:18and grouping them like this, it looks so much more interesting and considered from a design perspective.
00:42:24And the reason why it works so well is because we've used three different heights and all of the finishes are tonal.
00:42:31So this beautiful natural brown wicker and the rusty one pick up on the bricks in the front there.
00:42:36And then this taller white one at the back just anchors the whole thing.
00:42:39And I can never resist a few well-placed lanterns, candles and cushions to bring warmth and atmosphere to a space.
00:42:55Even a little one like this.
00:42:56Your front of house really is the first impression visitors get when they arrive at your home,
00:43:10so it's worthwhile making it welcoming and inviting.
00:43:13And with a few simple tweaks, you can do exactly that.
00:43:16We gave this a good clean up, added some beautiful plants and updated the furniture
00:43:20and it feels like a completely new space.
00:43:23Can't you just imagine sitting here sipping on a lemonade all summer long and watching the world go by?
00:43:36I sure can.
00:43:38Hard landscapes and soft native planting is a match made in heaven.
00:43:43It might be super simple, but this box is also super creative.
00:43:48The best part of warmer weather has to be outdoor entertaining,
00:43:52enjoying food in the sunshine with family and friends.
00:43:55In this month's magazine there's a host of recipes to help you be the most popular cook at barbecues and picnics.
00:44:02Like these classic Aussie burgers, plus skewers, wings and a show-stopping lemon tiramisu.
00:44:08Plus vote to win an appliance prize pack worth thousands.
00:44:12Check out the People's Choice Appliance Awards where you can vote in the shortlist for the very best fridges, air fryers, vacuums and more.
00:44:19This segment is brought to you by Zoysia Australis, exclusively available from Lawn Solutions Australia.
00:44:34We are tackling a sloping front garden for homeowners Christy and Dan.
00:44:47Now this space would scare off most people, but we're tackling it in a slightly different manner.
00:44:51Rather than using standard retaining walls, we're using boulders and we're going to create a modern landscape with native planting.
00:44:57But before I get on to that, I'm going to finish all the hardscaping.
00:45:12The final piece of the construction puzzle is this concrete path that runs down the front of the house.
00:45:18Around our stepping stones, I'm going to have crushed granite.
00:45:20But we can't have crushed granite on the slope because it's just going to wash away.
00:45:23So I need to create some terraces and I'm doing that with steel edging.
00:45:26Now, normally with the steel edging, you use these stakes to fix it off.
00:45:30But because we've got the concrete path, I'm just going to adapt our fixings to really get a secure finish.
00:45:35Continuing on with the theme of the retaining, you can see how the edging snakes around the garden.
00:45:53Now, this may only be retaining small amounts, but those incremental amounts have really helped us to create two really usable spaces for grass.
00:46:01I really love the way it snakes through the garden and gives us that natural feel.
00:46:05Now, you may be wondering why I'm digging out this letterbox.
00:46:15Well, in a couple of weeks, I'll show you how I built the replacement and trust me, you're going to love it.
00:46:20To start planting off and to screen off the top part of the garden, I'm using blueberry ash or Iliocarpus reticulatus.
00:46:43Now, these are going to get to a medium-sized tree. They're going to give us a lovely backdrop for the planting.
00:46:48This is north, so these plants are going to give us a lovely backdrop for the garden, but we're still going to have plenty of sun in here.
00:46:53All they're going to do is screen this busy corner.
00:46:56Earlier on, I laid these stepping stones over the existing concrete path.
00:47:12Now, to hide the concrete path, I'm just using the deco, and that's going to blend in with our new steps.
00:47:17If you don't want love, I'd just rather not waste my time, because baby, as you can't be out here, just catch a party for you.
00:47:31With our trees in the ground, it is time to start setting out the rest of our plants, and one of the shrubs I really like is this.
00:47:37Now, you might know casuarinas as big trees, or you might know them as the cousinate that crawls over things,
00:47:42but this one is called casuarina green wave, and it forms a really nice bun shape.
00:47:47Going to get to about a metre by a metre. It can be clipped, so you can use it in topiary gardens as well.
00:47:51But I really like it here because it sort of resembles the boulders and just helps the theme going on into the planting.
00:47:57Now, this plant is an absolute stunner. It's called Boronia Megastigma, and the thing I love most about it is the fragrance.
00:48:13It is absolutely incredible, and that's why I'm placing some by the letterbox and some right by the front door.
00:48:18Now, this does require a little bit of water, but it also needs free-draining soil.
00:48:22So I've placed it at the bottom of our slope so it can gain as much of natural rainfall as possible.
00:48:27Once it's finished flowering, it's really important to give it a trim, and that's going to keep the growth nice and compact.
00:48:32If you are dealing with a sloping site like this one, well, ground covers are going to be your best friend.
00:48:49Their natural sprawling habit means they spread out over the levels, putting their roots down, helping to bind the bank together.
00:48:54They're also great around boulders because they spill over the edge and really soften the look.
00:48:58Now, we've got lots of different ground covers in this garden, but one of my favorites is this one.
00:49:02It's Chrysocephalum Apiculatum. I like it just because I like saying the word.
00:49:06If you can't remember it, it's called Yellow Buttons. It's a fantastic little native that's going to do all the hard work for us.
00:49:11In the two large open spots in the garden, we're going to be laying about a hundred square meters of grass,
00:49:23but no matter how much grass you're laying, it's a good idea to use some lawn launcher.
00:49:27This has got all the nutrients your grass needs to establish really well, and it's also got moisture magnets in it,
00:49:32which will protect against drought in the future.
00:49:33For our lawn, we've got this amazing new variety called Zoysia Australis from Lawn Solutions Australia.
00:49:59And I think you'll agree. It looks absolutely incredible.
00:50:02It's got all the benefits of a buffalo, so it's really hard wearing.
00:50:05It can take quite a lot of shade and it's low maintenance, but it's a fine leaf grass.
00:50:09Unlike most fine leaf coochers, though, it won't discolor through winter.
00:50:13Naturally, it's got a blue-green color, but in winter, it turns to a bit of a purple.
00:50:17Well, my work here is done. Let's go and see what the homeowners think.
00:50:32How are you going?
00:50:34Hey Charlie, good to see you again.
00:50:36Wow, this is amazing.
00:50:37Wow.
00:50:38You guys have done a great job.
00:50:39This is crazy.
00:50:40Do you remember what it looked like before?
00:50:41Kind of.
00:50:42Yeah, kind of.
00:50:43Yeah, we lived with it for quite a few years.
00:50:44Yeah, it does look a bit different, doesn't it?
00:50:45You've got two lovely level spots now and all this great planting.
00:50:48Come take a walk down the path.
00:50:50Now, this path is actually the same concrete path that you had.
00:50:53We just laid these steppers on top of it.
00:50:54And we've got all the boulders doing all the retaining for you.
00:50:57And when the planting grows up, it's just going to fill in and get better over time.
00:51:01It looks fantastic.
00:51:02I especially love the boulders and the white really pops out.
00:51:07Gives it some nice character.
00:51:09And what do you think of the lawn?
00:51:10I love the lawn.
00:51:11I didn't realise there was so much lawn and I like how it's hidden the slope of the block.
00:51:15You can't tell.
00:51:16Absolutely.
00:51:17You've got two really good usable spaces here.
00:51:19Well guys, my work here is done.
00:51:20I do hope you enjoy the garden and I think we can put to bed.
00:51:23The sleeping block is difficult to work with.
00:51:25Coming up, Adam's being inspired by the land of the rising sun.
00:51:46Taking a bit of inspiration from Japan for our next project.
00:51:50Treat them mean, keep them keen.
00:51:53When you're growing orchids, that is.
00:51:55Give them a bit of tough love and they'll plough their socks off.
00:52:00I was lucky enough to visit Japan with my family and I have to say I was blown away by
00:52:09the way they use material.
00:52:11Whether it be for electronics, handmade craft or a beautiful bowl of ramen.
00:52:16Simplicity is at the heart of Japanese culture.
00:52:19Simple material but creatively used.
00:52:22So, I'm going to use it as inspiration to create a new box to store some tools.
00:52:27But first, I'll tell you what, I'm going to enjoy this.
00:52:34The other thing the Japanese are renowned for is sustainability.
00:52:37So, with that in mind, I won't be using new timber for this project.
00:52:41I'm going to be using these old timber pallets.
00:52:43These are a great resource but also they'll give our toolbox instant character.
00:52:48Now, I've already pulled some apart and the next step is to dress these edges.
00:52:52Because I'm going to be laminating these timbers together.
00:53:10Check that out.
00:53:11We can see now that these joints are all lining up.
00:53:14Now, this is important when you're laminating timber.
00:53:16Because you want to make sure that the glue is touching everywhere.
00:53:19So now, I'll put a nice even coverage of glue on each piece.
00:53:23Now, to stop the warping, I'll be putting a clamp in the middle.
00:53:39And then two on each side underneath.
00:53:42Next up, I'm going to be using this panel to cut an end and a side out of.
00:53:56First, I'll rip it to 260mm and then I'll cut an end which will be 306mm and a side at 700mm.
00:54:12And for the bottom, that will be 700mm long by 300mm wide.
00:54:38And that is all our pieces, Kate.
00:54:40You can see over here I've got a pile of cleats, feet and handles.
00:54:44But the basic shape of the box is we've got our base, our sides and our ends to hold it together.
00:54:49I'll be using some bugle screws.
00:54:51First thing I need to do is pre-drill it, put some glue on, and we're ready to go.
00:55:10All right, and that's the main part of the box together.
00:55:28Now, you can notice with this material, it's obviously not perfect.
00:55:32It does have bows.
00:55:33These little gaps that you see here and there, it's all about the character.
00:55:36Now, next up, you'll notice that I did step it in on each side.
00:55:40And that is because I'm going to be adding a handle in there.
00:55:43All I've done is created a bit of a bevel here.
00:55:46So what I'll do is I'll keep this long point to the outside.
00:55:49And that acts as a little bit of a finger grab.
00:55:51I'm going to glue and nail this in place.
00:56:08Now for the top.
00:56:09Now this is where the Japanese creativity comes into play.
00:56:12To start off, I'm going to be putting these pieces on each side.
00:56:21And for the lid, the way this works, I've just got some more pallet timber here,
00:56:33and I've cut these into wedges.
00:56:35And you'll notice on the edge, it's cut on an angle.
00:56:39So the way this works is I'll slip the lid inside our box.
00:56:43Then I'm going to mark this point once it's hard against this end.
00:56:48I take it out, and then with this wedge, I simply line up this long point to my pencil
00:56:54and make sure that it's square to this back edge.
00:56:57And then I can fix it in place.
00:57:12With the wedge attached, we can see how this works.
00:57:15So it supports on both ends, and now I'm going to push the lid in.
00:57:19And that allows, once this point touches, this side to drop inside our box.
00:57:24Then I pick up the other wedge, and I'm simply going to start pushing this in
00:57:29until it goes all the way where everything is flush on this edge.
00:57:34I'm going to mark along here.
00:57:36Then I'll get one more piece of pallet timber.
00:57:38I'll take the lid out and attach it, lining up with that line.
00:57:43And that's it.
00:57:44Simple, right?
00:57:51Okay, let's see how this works.
00:57:53So we drop it in, pull it back, and you can see that it's all loose.
00:57:56So to lock it in place, we get our wedge.
00:57:59Look at that.
00:58:00Look at that.
00:58:01That is not going anywhere.
00:58:02I absolutely love this project.
00:58:04And to finish it off, obviously it's pallet material.
00:58:07You can leave it as it is.
00:58:08You could put a wax coat on it, or you could do a clear coat.
00:58:12But the best part is you can scale these up and down.
00:58:15I mean, look at this for a project here.
00:58:17This is a little pencil case.
00:58:19It's a great project to tackle with the kids.
00:58:21I'm going to be putting my tools in this one.
00:58:23But you could use it for absolutely anything.
00:58:26And it looks too good to hide away.
00:58:38Orchids have been captivating us for centuries,
00:58:41and they're sure to be one to grow at your place.

00:59:17So much better.
00:59:21In the wonderful world of flowering plants,
00:59:23there's one big family that really stands out from the crowd,
00:59:26with over 28,000 different species.
00:59:29And some of them so rare and beautiful
00:59:31that it's no wonder they've got a reputation for being a bit finicky to grow.
00:59:35But is that reputation well deserved,
00:59:37or is it just a matter of getting to know these plants a little bit better?
00:59:40So tell me now why I'm still here
00:59:46Playing for the ball of me like why she's still here
00:59:53If the ball of me like why she's still here
00:59:57I'm of course talking about magnificent orchids.
01:00:00And when you see a display like this,
01:00:02it's easy to see why we've been fascinated with these plants for thousands of years.
01:00:06In Australia alone there are close to 100 different orchid societies dedicated to these plants.
01:00:11And orchid growers and collectors are some of the most passionate people you'll ever meet.
01:00:16Now sure they might grow differently at home to some of the other plants you used to,
01:00:20but once you understand the growing conditions they enjoy,
01:00:23they're actually easier than you think.
01:00:25Did you know that if you plan carefully, depending on where you live,
01:00:39you could have an orchid in flower in your garden or home from late summer all the way through spring.
01:00:44And I think one of the most popular orchids would have to be the cymbidiums,
01:00:48and it's easy to see why, look at this.
01:00:50They're bred from wild orchids growing in the mountains of India and Southeast Asia,
01:00:54and so they grow really well in cool climates like Melbourne.
01:00:57And they come in a spectacular range of colours,
01:01:00but this rusty orange colour is really special.
01:01:03Now if you are growing cymbidiums at home,
01:01:05then you want to position them in a protected spot,
01:01:08so somewhere away from that strong hot sun.
01:01:10So somewhere like a protected patio or under the eaves is just perfect.
01:01:15Now obviously the upright forms are just magnificent,
01:01:18but what I've really come here to show you are these incredible cascading cymbidium orchids.
01:01:24Just have a look at the sheer number of flowers on those stems.
01:01:28The blooms are long-lasting and they look best cascading out of hanging baskets.
01:01:33I mean, just wow!
01:01:34Orchids are just so exotic looking that it might surprise you to learn that all of these beauties are actually Aussie natives.
01:01:50In fact, the Australian dendrobiums are bursting their way onto the world orchid stage
01:01:55because they've got these unique spidery looking flowers and really beautiful markings.
01:02:00They're also really tough and they can be grown in all climates around Australia.
01:02:05My tip though, when you're growing them outdoors,
01:02:07just protect them from all of those really extreme weather conditions.
01:02:10Other than that, they're just so hardy.
01:02:13Give them a bit of tough love and they'll flower their socks off.
01:02:23You've probably been given one of these plants at one time or another as a beautiful gift.
01:02:27This is the Phalaenopsis or moth orchid.
01:02:30So called because look at those flowers.
01:02:32They look like a very pretty moth.
01:02:34Now they're best grown indoors so look for a spot with bright indirect light.
01:02:39Now when it comes to watering, you want them to be a little bit moist.
01:02:43They like a bit of moisture but still allow that potting medium to dry out in between your watering.
01:02:48Now one of the biggest questions I get about this plant is how can I get it to re-flower?
01:02:53Well, when those flowers just start to wither, make sure you cut the stem back to say about two nodes from the base of the plant.
01:03:01And hopefully you'll get some more flowers.
01:03:03I've also had success cutting back the entire stem.
01:03:07It seems to promote a whole new flowering stem.
01:03:10Then make sure you use a really good flowering fertilizer for orchids.
01:03:15And one tip that an orchid grower gave me once.
01:03:19If you're having trouble getting your orchids to flower, just move them to a little bit more light.
01:03:24It works a treat.
01:03:25The orchid family is so big and diverse that we've really only just scratched the surface.
01:03:44But I wanted to tease you a little and show you some of the other orchids that you can get your hands on.
01:03:49So this is the beautiful Catlia orchid.
01:03:52And to me, the flower looks very iris-like.
01:03:55Then there are stunning slipper orchids.
01:03:57See that?
01:03:58It looks like a little slipper, but it's a really unique looking flower.
01:04:02Then we've got our Oncidiums, which is sometimes called Dancing Ladies.
01:04:06But they've just got a beautiful diverse range of flower shapes, colours and sizes.
01:04:11Now you might not think of orchids as having spectacular foliage very often.
01:04:15But have a look at this.
01:04:16This is the beautiful Jewel orchids.
01:04:18They've got these dark patterned leaves.
01:04:21And if you're after something a little bit rarer, get your hands on one of these.
01:04:25This is the White Star orchid.
01:04:27So unique looking, really waxy and beautiful.
01:04:30Many orchids are what we call epiphytes.
01:04:46So in other words, they grow on something.
01:04:48So in the wild, it could be the crevices of rocks or trees with very little soil around them.
01:04:53So it's really important to choose a potting medium that is both well-drained and open.
01:04:58And in fact, if you want to go next level, there are even different sizes and grades of potting medium.
01:05:03So that you can choose the right one for the right orchid.
01:05:07So for me, it's really about understanding how orchids like to grow in the wild.
01:05:11And I think learning how to make them thrive is part of the fun and the journey of growing them.
01:05:16So it's all about right plant, right mix, right growing conditions.
01:05:24And you'll be hooked on orchids.
01:05:26Well Chris, I've got to say, exploring Tallawang has been quite an eye opener.
01:05:38Yeah, you better believe it.
01:05:39And it's all because of this, really.
01:05:40I mean, it's just made the city so much more connected.
01:05:42And you feel like it's only going to get better and better.
01:05:44Well it's only been around for a year, which is the hardest thing to believe.
01:05:47I'll tell you whether you're a local or if you're visiting town for a weekend.
01:05:50Do yourself a favour, jump on board and go for a little adventure of your own.
01:05:54Shall we?
01:05:55Yeah, we should.
01:05:56We'll see you next bit with more Better Homes and Gardens though.
01:05:57Thanks.
01:05:58Next time, we're taking the scenic route on an epic Aussie adventure.
01:06:07Why aren't you driving?
01:06:08Well because you told me you're an adult.
01:06:10Sucked in.
01:06:12And road testing the best things to eat along the way.
01:06:15If food keeps 200 grigs quiet, you know it's good.
01:06:20Plus, we've all got a bit of a bad side.
01:06:23Ta-da!
01:06:24Wow, Melissa, I'll tell you what.
01:06:26This has to be one of the worst size of houses I've ever seen.
01:06:31And Chewy's really living up to his name.
01:06:34He likes to chew things.
01:06:36That's next time on Better Homes and Gardens.
