00:00:00A few day rises before me
00:00:20I am high in energy
00:00:23Living up to my dreams
00:00:27I believe in fantasy
00:00:30I'm in a room of magic
00:00:33I feel like I could love the world
00:00:37You miss my mind
00:00:40I will get the most
00:00:42I will keep the blows I'll be
00:00:44This is my time for winning
00:00:47This is my time to shine
00:00:50Hi honey, how's it going?
00:00:56Hey mom
00:00:57Do you think the sunflowers
00:00:58Should be spread across throughout
00:01:00Or sort of gather in the center?
00:01:03Well, given that they're sunflowers
00:01:05I think front and center
00:01:07Let them command the attention they deserve
00:01:09Yes
00:01:13That's it
00:01:14I'm going to finish this in a minute
00:01:17I've just got to write something down real quick
00:01:18Oh, okay, I'll finish up
00:01:20Okay
00:01:27She commanded attention
00:01:31In every room she
00:01:36Hello
00:01:36Lisa, hi
00:01:39So nice to see you
00:01:41What can I get started for you?
00:01:42Well, yes
00:01:43I'm actually looking for someone
00:01:46Might you happen to know where I could find
00:01:49The Ms. Sophie Wood
00:01:51Accomplished author extraordinaire
00:01:52I'll, uh, let me go check on that for you
00:01:56Oh yes, I'm Sophie Wood
00:02:01Multi-hyphenate florist slash author
00:02:04A pleasure
00:02:04Sweetie
00:02:06I remember when you were just a little girl
00:02:09Sweeping up rose petals
00:02:11Now look at you
00:02:12Oh
00:02:13Lisa
00:02:14Is Sophie taking care of you?
00:02:17Just popped in to shower her with praise
00:02:19Well, good
00:02:20She's her own worst critic
00:02:22It was actually published by Tales of Ink
00:02:25You know that indie publishing house
00:02:27Just down the street?
00:02:27Well, aren't they lucky to have such talent?
00:02:31I'm not even exaggerating when I tell you
00:02:32I could not put it down
00:02:34In fact, I'm grabbing this extra copy for my book swap
00:02:38The more readers, the better, right?
00:02:40Thank you so much
00:02:41That means a lot
00:02:42And please enjoy on the house
00:02:43Oh
00:02:44That's so sweet
00:02:46And this is on the house
00:02:51Just for you
00:02:52Have a good one, ladies
00:02:54And congrats again, doll
00:02:56Amazing work
00:02:57Thanks, Lisa
00:02:58So the bestseller list comes out today
00:03:03Since when do you keep track of that?
00:03:05Since I had my own horse in the race
00:03:08I think I have to win a few more races
00:03:11Before I make it to the derby
00:03:13Number three
00:03:16Wait, what?
00:03:19Number three
00:03:20Look right here in black and white
00:03:22This can't be real
00:03:28You did it
00:03:30What?
00:03:31Oh my gosh
00:03:32This is huge
00:03:33Oh, it's Janice
00:03:36Take it, take it
00:03:38Hi, Janice
00:03:39Yeah, I'm just seeing it now
00:03:41Yes, I can come in
00:03:44I can come in right now
00:03:45Sure
00:03:45Okay, yeah, I'll see you soon
00:03:47Bye
00:03:48Oh my god
00:03:51Oh my god
00:03:51Can you believe it?
00:04:21Honestly, I'm struggling with the fact that I'm even awake right now.
00:04:27I mean, of course, it shouldn't be a surprise based on your talent alone.
00:04:31You wrote an absolutely incredible story.
00:04:33But 20 years in this industry and I've never seen a splash like this for an indie author,
00:04:37let alone a first-timer.
00:04:39Which is exactly why I'm convinced my alarm is going to go off any second.
00:04:43Well, don't wake up just yet.
00:04:45Guess who I got a call from this morning?
00:04:47I don't know. Santa Claus?
00:04:49Better.
00:04:50Meredith McEvins.
00:04:52No! From Grapevine Publishing?
00:04:55That's the one. She's eyeing you for a three-book deal.
00:04:58Oh my gosh, this is...
00:05:00Career-altering. Life-changing. Every writer's wildest dream.
00:05:06Yeah.
00:05:08Morning.
00:05:18Good morning, Emma.
00:05:20Daniel, you're early today.
00:05:22Yeah, I'm actually meeting Janice Kilner this morning.
00:05:25Secretly switching agents? Scandalous. Tell me everything.
00:05:28No, no juicy scandals, unfortunately.
00:05:30Just doing Janice a favor after she helped set up that initial meeting for the web series.
00:05:36Oh, right. How's that going?
00:05:38It's... going.
00:05:40It's a work in progress, but we'll get there.
00:05:42Oh, I'm sure it'll be great.
00:05:44Thanks.
00:05:45So, for the book tour, we have you in Boston, Chicago, L.A.
00:05:50Kind of a coast-to-coast action.
00:05:53Yes, and the kickoff for the tour will be an event here in the city sponsored by Pen & Paper Bookstore.
00:05:58It'll be a media-only interview hosted by Olivia Winters.
00:06:02Wait, THE Olivia Winters?
00:06:04I grew up watching her show with my mom.
00:06:06Yeah. The Queen of Late Night is a big fan of your book.
00:06:09Wow.
00:06:10Okay, no more news for today. My brain is about to...
00:06:13Oh, great. Meredith McKevins just got back to me.
00:06:16She'll be in the audience that evening and wants to take you out to dinner after to discuss the book deal.
00:06:21Perfect.
00:06:23Perfect.
00:06:25Come in.
00:06:26Morning, Janice.
00:06:27Oh, Daniel, welcome. Grab a seat.
00:06:32You must be Sophie. Daniel Burke. Looking forward to working together.
00:06:39Sophie Wood. Nice to meet you.
00:06:42Sophie and I were just going through the details of her book tour and I was about to get to your role in all this.
00:06:47Just in time. Nice.
00:06:49You know, I'm actually surprised you two haven't met yet.
00:06:52Daniel's another client at the agency and he's working on a web series with Rebel Lifestyles, if you've heard of him.
00:06:58Oh, yeah. Yeah, I've watched a lot of that content.
00:07:01Congrats.
00:07:03Thanks.
00:07:04And congratulations on the book. Amazing news.
00:07:08So, Sophie, for book tours, we always hire a public speaking coach to help authors prepare.
00:07:14And since Daniel is a thought leader on the subject and a client at the agency, I figured he'd be a natural fit to help with the book tour.
00:07:22Oh, that won't be necessary. Honestly, I'm totally good to go. Consider my bags packed. No offense. And thank you for the offer.
00:07:32Yeah, no problem.
00:07:34Are you sure, Sophie? Speaking prep is pretty standard. My clients always rave about how helpful it is.
00:07:40Oh, I'm sure it is. And Daniel's been working hard on his web series scripts. So I was thinking maybe in return for his help with the coaching, you could help him with some editing.
00:07:50Oh, actually, the script's there.
00:07:52Oh, yeah. I'll totally help with the editing. Anytime.
00:07:54No. Thank you. But, yeah, my friend is reviewing them for me. He's a real stickler for grammar and... words.
00:08:05Well, it's just about one o'clock, so I better go check to see if the reporters are here.
00:08:10Oh, great. Yeah, I should head back to the flower shop. On Wednesdays, we ice the orchids, so...
00:08:14Actually, they're here to see you, Sophie. Sorry?
00:08:17Yes. I called a mini press conference as soon as we got the news this morning.
00:08:23Great. That sounds fantastic.
00:08:27And, Daniel, I'd still love you to observe.
00:08:30Sure. Hey, it'd be great to see one of these press conferences in case you ever need my help for any other clients.
00:08:36Great.
00:08:38So, these are reporters from some of the top-lit magazines here to get the scoop on your book.
00:08:48Everyone, Sophie. Sophie? Everyone.
00:08:51Hi, there.
00:08:53All right, if everyone can take a seat, we can get started.
00:08:57Thank you all so much for taking the time to stop by.
00:09:01I think I speak for both Sophie and myself when I say that we are just blown away by the massive early success of Walking On Air.
00:09:08Though rare for a new author, I can't say I'm too surprised.
00:09:13Ever since the first time I read her work, I knew that Sophie had a gift.
00:09:17But, enough from me. Sophie, I'll let you go ahead and introduce yourself.
00:09:24Hi, everyone. I'm Sophie.
00:09:27Oh, whoops.
00:09:28Sophie, uh, Wood. Sophie Wood. I'm the, uh, author of the novel.
00:09:42Uh, maybe you can start by telling us a bit about your writing process.
00:09:46Yeah, uh, right.
00:09:49Um, yeah, I've never really, um, done this before.
00:09:54Uh, so, to start, I, um, I, I talk to my characters.
00:10:02Not in the mirror. That would be weird.
00:10:04Uh, I, uh, like to talk to my character on the, um...
00:10:09Page?
00:10:10The page.
00:10:11I like to talk to my character on the page.
00:10:15You know, I've noticed while working with Sophie that her talent lies in her ability to be diligent.
00:10:23Without letting the rigidity of deadlines or deliverables squash her creativity.
00:10:28Sophie is an everyday writer who will produce draft after draft until she can feel it.
00:10:36Okay.
00:10:37This is her, I'm just gonna stay.
00:10:38Grab.
00:10:39Okay, there.
00:10:40Okay.
00:10:41Well, uh, thank you all for coming.
00:10:46I'll, uh, see you at the media gala in a few weeks.
00:11:05I'm sorry for springing that on you.
00:11:07No, no, I'm sorry I didn't bring my A-game.
00:11:09Not a problem.
00:11:10But can we, uh, reconvene tomorrow?
00:11:13I want to chat a bit more about the book tour since it, uh, it is coming up fast.
00:11:19Absolutely.
00:11:20Same time?
00:11:21If you can, yes.
00:11:22Great.
00:11:23See you soon.
00:11:24Yeah.
00:11:39What was that?
00:11:57Hey, Mom.
00:11:58Hmm.
00:11:59When was the last time you watered the ferns?
00:12:01Ooh, last week sometime.
00:12:03Something like that, I think.
00:12:04Okay, they actually weren't due fur watering until this week.
00:12:07So I'm gonna make a note for another watering in two weeks.
00:12:10Okay, these ones are very fussy and they looked a bit drowned.
00:12:13Okay.
00:12:14Well, the plants can wait until tomorrow to be fussed over.
00:12:17Why don't you call it quits and bask in the glory of your big day?
00:12:23Oh, look, look, look.
00:12:25Great Reads magazine.
00:12:28Wow.
00:12:29Yeah.
00:12:30That was fast.
00:12:31Um...
00:12:32Oh, your father would be so happy.
00:12:36He always knew his little girl would make it someday.
00:12:41I have a funny feeling he pulled a couple strings for me up there.
00:12:45Mm-hmm.
00:12:46I'm gonna get a hard copy of this tomorrow and frame it.
00:12:50Oh, nice.
00:12:51Maybe you can put it over my sixth grade school photo.
00:12:54Oh, look, there are reader reviews at the bottom of this article.
00:13:00My favorite book of the year.
00:13:03Oh, this one has every color of heart emoji at the end of it.
00:13:07I love that you know what emojis are.
00:13:10Oh, yeah.
00:13:11I text.
00:13:12I text.
00:13:13Uh, yeah.
00:13:23Oh, and when someone is not nervous, what's this?
00:13:26Because that trigger will allow you to be asymptomatic.
00:13:28Oh.
00:13:29Oh, okay.
00:13:30I put a joystick in the microphone.
00:13:32Oh, yeah.
00:13:33I, he.
00:13:34Um, I love it.
00:13:35What?
00:13:36Oh, my God.
00:14:06so what do you think
00:14:23uh yeah yeah i mean it's obvious you've done a lot of work on this
00:14:31and um i'm not trying to be harsh in any way but uh these episodes seem a little dry
00:14:39yeah i felt that while i was writing them right they're just like missing the the the sparkle
00:14:45that makes you good at what you do well tom you think i sparkle man not in these scripts you don't
00:14:51yeah okay point taken no but seriously man i mean i know how challenging the writing process can be
00:14:56and if i could write these things for you i would but you're the expert they're paying the big bucks
00:15:00for and i'm just the young and dashingly handsome producer trying to get his own career off the
00:15:06ground
00:15:06well questionable
00:15:12okay but hear me up for a second this whole series is based on public speaking right
00:15:19and i believe that the real sparkle behind any great speaker is the ability to embrace spontaneity
00:15:25okay so what if we just send them an outline of all the key points i plan to touch on
00:15:31and then just tell them that part of my process is simply being in the moment when the camera's on
00:15:35okay believe me i would love to save us both that kind of time and sure you can embrace spontaneity
00:15:41all you want once we get into filming great but revel specifically asked us for full episode
00:15:48scripts before we can even move into production
00:15:50i'll see if i can squeeze in another pass in the next week if i can fit it in
00:16:00the deadline's friday remember yikes friday's not so fast yeah it's right after thursday
00:16:11i'm sorry janice i know i messed up yesterday but
00:16:40no need to apologize to start let's just zoom out a bit and agree that no one really likes
00:16:47public speaking okay no offense none taken i know for a while that enjoying it is a little
00:16:54bizarre i actually enjoy it too look i was off yesterday okay i know that but it was a fluke
00:17:04and it won't happen again i promise you have a lot riding on this interview sophie and if yesterday
00:17:11was intimidating just imagine being in the hot seat with olivia winters janice i can assure you
00:17:19that's exactly what i need assurance it's my job to set you up for success and i can't just sit back
00:17:27and let you miss out on this book deal with grapevine i don't say that to scare you but these
00:17:31big publishers want to work with writers who are not only talented but also capable of upholding a
00:17:37certain public prestige that goes along with their brand and if meredith mckevins decides to pull the
00:17:43plug on the deal because she feels you aren't ready it'll be really hard for us to bounce back
00:17:49i totally understand but i think i'm fully capable i know you are capable but in order to prevent any
00:17:57jitters from getting in the way i'm going to insist that you work with daniel to prepare
00:18:02just think of it as taking out an insurance policy on your dream career
00:18:09i was thinking maybe we can go for a business lunch talk to the coaching see where you're at
00:18:15sure a business lunch that's a great idea
00:18:22sophie hi hey
00:18:40sorry about that i didn't see you at first i thought i would just uh run a quick errant
00:18:49all good thank you for meeting with me i'm excited to dive into the coaching with you
00:18:54yeah listen daniel i don't want to underplay your qualifications i looked you up by the way
00:19:01i hope that's not weird as long as it isn't weird if i looked you up too
00:19:04the fact that it's not weird makes it weird you know
00:19:08ha sign of the times for sure
00:19:10but i have to say i was really impressed by your work
00:19:14i'm sure it works wonders for people who who need it
00:19:17oh that's the goal
00:19:18yeah i just um i just don't think i'm one of those people
00:19:22you know and i don't want to take time from your busy schedule and your scripts
00:19:26i'm still available for edits if you need me
00:19:29yeah thanks maybe down the line
00:19:31sure thing
00:19:33anyway um i know we just met but do i really seem like that shy of a person to you
00:19:40no not at all
00:19:42but effective public speaking doesn't always hinge on whether a person is shy or not
00:19:47i mean there have been plenty of outgoing people throughout history that have been terrible public speakers
00:19:52i mean even presidents so how about this i could do a quick assessment right here
00:19:58see where you're at and if i agree that you don't need the coaching
00:20:01then i'll tell janice you have my official stamp of approval
00:20:05hmm deal
00:20:07cool you're gonna walk us through a quick visualization
00:20:11shoot i left my crystals at home
00:20:13it'll only work if you take it seriously
00:20:16you did say you wanted to be off the hook didn't you
00:20:19okay
00:20:21all right
00:20:24we'll start by having you exhale
00:20:27close your eyes
00:20:28place your hands on my palms
00:20:30okay
00:20:34we'll use the interview as the example in this scenario
00:20:37picture yourself at pen and paper bookstore
00:20:41there's olivia winters
00:20:43getting ready to introduce you to a full audience
00:20:46you look out
00:20:48and there's meredith mcgeffins
00:20:49taking a seat in the middle row
00:20:51no no no no no no
00:20:52nope
00:20:54i'm terrified
00:20:55okay
00:20:55i despise public speaking
00:20:57hey
00:20:57let me help you
00:20:59i use the skill-based five-step method
00:21:01the interview's in ten days right
00:21:03don't remind me
00:21:05the coaching won't take too long
00:21:07if you give it a try and decide it's not for you
00:21:09we'll part ways
00:21:11no hard feelings
00:21:12well if you help me pull this thing off
00:21:14you might just be an expert in magic by the time we're done
00:21:17hey hey welcome
00:21:24i didn't know this place was here it's beautiful
00:21:26isn't it my friend tom and i use it as a workspace all the time and it's entirely donation based and maintained by the artists that use it very cool
00:21:33very cool
00:21:34and um why exactly am i wearing athletic gear please tell me we're not running don't worry running is not on the docket
00:21:40good
00:21:41i used to run every day in college but
00:21:42these days i prefer a brisk walk
00:21:43yeah i saw that two-time track champion at knolls college
00:21:44how did you know
00:21:45right
00:21:46well it was actually cross-country and i came in third boat
00:21:48yeah i saw that two-time track champion at knolls college
00:21:52how did you know
00:22:05right
00:22:07well it was actually cross-country and i came in third both years but i like your spin on it
00:22:13well your time as a runner might actually help you with what we're working on today
00:22:17step one in the coaching program is breath work
00:22:20Did you know that if you can control your breath,
00:22:23you can actually trick your nervous system into calmness?
00:22:26I did not.
00:22:28Makes sense.
00:22:29Public speaking and forgetting how to breathe
00:22:31seemed to go hand in hand for me.
00:22:33You are not alone.
00:22:34It's very common.
00:22:39Oh, wow.
00:22:42This is lovely.
00:22:44Hey, brother, how's it going?
00:22:46All right.
00:22:50Yoga.
00:22:53I've been meaning to get into yoga.
00:22:55So if I pull a hammy on the first try,
00:22:58you're going to have to carry me down four flights of stairs.
00:23:00The risk is low, but I got your back either way.
00:23:08We're going to start with some warm-ups.
00:23:09Big breath in.
00:23:12And melt all the way down.
00:23:17Come on.
00:23:18What?
00:23:19You look like one of those inflatable tube men at a car dealership.
00:23:22Yeah?
00:23:23Yeah.
00:23:24Have you ever noticed that tube man seems like a pretty carefree guy?
00:23:27He's not out there worrying about what anyone else thinks.
00:23:29He sure isn't.
00:23:30Right?
00:23:31Let him inspire you.
00:23:33Commit to your inner tube man.
00:23:35The singular most important thing you can do when trying to control your breath is to breathe from your diaphragm.
00:23:51Hmm.
00:23:51I've heard some of my favorite pop stars talk about that.
00:23:54Funny I had you pegged as more of a jazz fan.
00:23:57Because I'm a novelist?
00:23:59Yeah.
00:24:00Which is a pretty bad case of stereotyping when I say it out loud.
00:24:05And you're probably into house music?
00:24:08Because I have a lot of energy and essentially make a living as a glorified hype man?
00:24:12Uh-huh.
00:24:12Wow.
00:24:13Well, I'll have you know.
00:24:14Yeah, that's exactly right.
00:24:15Yeah.
00:24:16It's, it's, it's, it's...
00:24:18Okay, DJ Daniel.
00:24:19Are you going to teach me how to breathe or have I lost you to your inner dance floor?
00:24:22Wait for it.
00:24:23Here comes the beat drop.
00:24:25Boom.
00:24:32All right.
00:24:33So, one hand on your chest, the other on your stomach, and exhale fully.
00:24:39And then simply let the air re-enter your body.
00:24:41It should feel like you have a balloon inflating underneath your ribs.
00:24:45In through your nose, and out.
00:24:49In through your nose.
00:24:51In through your nose.
00:24:54And out.
00:24:58So, if I practiced real hard, what's the likelihood that I end up like one of these pop stars?
00:25:02Well, I don't know.
00:25:03That's your few notes.
00:25:05Yes.
00:25:06I walked right into that one, didn't I?
00:25:08Sure did.
00:25:13And out.
00:25:14Oh, my mom needs me to cover at the flower shop for a few hours.
00:25:24Can we pick back up tomorrow?
00:25:26Sorry, she's not always so good with schedules.
00:25:28No worries, we're just about done for today.
00:25:30Why don't I walk you though?
00:25:32You can wrap up quickly at the shop.
00:25:33I have to head that direction anyway.
00:25:35You don't mind?
00:25:36Nope.
00:25:37I love a goose walk myself.
00:25:38There you go.
00:25:45Nice to see you.
00:25:47Hey, mom.
00:25:48This is Daniel.
00:25:49The one I was telling you about.
00:25:50Yes, Daniel.
00:25:51Hi.
00:25:52I'm Evelyn.
00:25:53Nice to meet you.
00:25:54And I'm so sorry to interrupt your session, but I completely forgot about an appointment
00:25:59I had this afternoon.
00:26:00No trouble at all.
00:26:01It's a pleasure to meet you, Evelyn.
00:26:02Yeah, yeah.
00:26:03And, oh, thanks so much, Sophie.
00:26:04And I'll see you later tonight.
00:26:05Yeah, funny how you forgot about your appointment, but you didn't forget about pasta night, huh?
00:26:09Priorities.
00:26:10Priorities.
00:26:11Your mom seems awesome.
00:26:12Must have been a lot of fun growing up.
00:26:13Oh, yeah.
00:26:14Never a dull moment.
00:26:15So, step two is memorization.
00:26:18And it comes with some homework.
00:26:20Romeo and Juliet?
00:26:21Mm-hmm.
00:26:22These two are nothing more.
00:26:23These two are nothing more.
00:26:24You know?
00:26:25Yeah.
00:26:26Yeah.
00:26:27Yeah.
00:26:28Yeah.
00:26:29Yeah.
00:26:30Yeah.
00:26:31Yeah.
00:26:32Yeah.
00:26:33Yeah.
00:26:34Yeah.
00:26:35Yeah.
00:26:36Yeah.
00:26:37Yeah.
00:26:38Yeah.
00:26:39You know Juliet?
00:26:40Mm-hmm.
00:26:41These two are nothing but trouble.
00:26:42Whenever you have to speak in front of an audience, it can always be helpful to memorize
00:26:45some sort of text.
00:26:46A safety net to fall back on when the nerves take over.
00:26:49So if I freak out in front of Olivia and Meredith, I'm supposed to start reciting a Shakespearean
00:26:53monologue?
00:26:54I would pay big bucks to see that, but no.
00:26:57The monologue will be for step five, the trial run.
00:27:00In a few days, you'll recite the monologue in front of a group of friends incorporating all
00:27:04the new skills you've learned.
00:27:05This story stresses me out.
00:27:07Not a big romantic.
00:27:08I have no problem with romance.
00:27:10I just don't believe that love should be as hard as it's made out to be in stories.
00:27:14Hmm.
00:27:15I get that.
00:27:16Then again, love can be pretty hard in real life.
00:27:19Well, not if you keep your head on straight.
00:27:21Yeah, but who's ever kept their head on straight when they've fallen in love?
00:27:24Me?
00:27:25I've never totally lost my head for someone.
00:27:27Oh.
00:27:28Is it possible you've never actually been in love?
00:27:31Uh...
00:27:32Hello.
00:27:33Let me know if you need any help with anything.
00:27:38Okay, Mr. Speech and Debate co-captain.
00:27:40Oh, wow.
00:27:41You did a deep dive, huh?
00:27:43I'm thorough.
00:27:44Now, before we even get to the trial run, we have to tackle step three.
00:27:48Facing your fears.
00:27:50Okay.
00:27:51We could do that.
00:27:52Or we could, I don't know, not do that.
00:27:55All right.
00:27:56So I'm going to have you write down some of your other fears, and I'm going to set a 20-second timer so that you can go with your gut instinct and not overthink it.
00:28:03Okay, but what if...
00:28:04Go!
00:28:05Oh, okay.
00:28:06Um...
00:28:14And time.
00:28:18Let me see.
00:28:21Interesting.
00:28:22Yeah, we can definitely knock off a few of these tomorrow.
00:28:25You in?
00:28:26Do I have a choice?
00:28:27Oh, we always have a choice to be chicken.
00:28:30You did not just chicken me.
00:28:32Oh, I did.
00:28:33You let me know the time and place, and I'll be there.
00:28:35You got it.
00:28:43How'd it go with the master of the stage today?
00:28:46He seemed like a nice guy.
00:28:48Well, he's, uh, a character.
00:28:51Mm-hmm.
00:28:52I still think it might be a waste of time, but he did share with me a couple tips to keep in my back pocket.
00:28:55Well, that's great.
00:28:56Here.
00:28:57Let me taste this.
00:29:04What do you think?
00:29:05Mm.
00:29:06You measured everything, right?
00:29:08Yes.
00:29:09I followed the recipe exactly.
00:29:10Yeah.
00:29:11Well, this recipe is more of a suggestion than a rule, right?
00:29:15I mean, a little dash of this.
00:29:19Pinch of that.
00:29:21Just go with the flow.
00:29:26Cheers.
00:29:27Hi.
00:29:28Hi.
00:29:31How'd we go?
00:29:32Hi.
00:29:57Did you really have to pick the tallest building in the neighborhood?
00:30:00Couldn't we have started with something smaller?
00:30:03Like climb a tree or check out the fire escape of a two-story building?
00:30:08Or see a movie that takes place on a plane?
00:30:11Well, I do have to admit I did have a double motive for picking this place.
00:30:15My dad actually brought me here for the first time when I was a kid.
00:30:19I come back once a year to get a picture from the top for him.
00:30:22Aww. Where does he live?
00:30:24He's upstate, but he's a city guy at heart.
00:30:26He just doesn't make it out this way as much as he'd like to anymore.
00:30:30Well, if I have to do it for dad, I guess I have to do it for dad.
00:30:36Chickens first?
00:30:38Hey.
00:30:49My legs are jello. My legs are jello.
00:30:51Come on.
00:30:52I mean, I feel brave. We can go now.
00:30:55You got this. Come on. We're just going to head over to the ledge, check out the view, take a picture, and then we're going to head back down.
00:31:00Okay. I can't look down. I can't look until we get there, so just make sure I don't bump into anything.
00:31:04Almost there. You got it. You got this. Come on.
00:31:07Oh.
00:31:08All right. All right. Almost there.
00:31:09Okay.
00:31:10And the last few steps are all you.
00:31:11Oh, come on.
00:31:12Okay?
00:31:13Almost there.
00:31:14What?
00:31:15You got it. Come on.
00:31:16Oh.
00:31:17Oh.
00:31:18There you go.
00:31:20I'm going to count it down, and when you look up, you're going to see the city like you've never seen it before. I promise.
00:31:24Oh.
00:31:25Okay. Go, go, go.
00:31:28All right. Three, two, one.
00:31:31What?
00:31:34This is like a totally different city from here.
00:31:45It's incredible, right?
00:31:46I think that's my, I think that's my first apartment over there.
00:31:53My roommate was so sweet, but so messy.
00:31:57My high school was just past that intersection.
00:32:03There was a pizza shop and a bakery right across from each other.
00:32:06Best smelling corner in the city.
00:32:08Oh, yeah. I recognize that area.
00:32:11My dad's auto shop was there.
00:32:13Oh, yeah. I know that place. Does he still work there?
00:32:16Oh, no. He passed away when I was nine.
00:32:20Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
00:32:22Thanks. He was the best.
00:32:28It's getting windy up here. Um, I should take that picture of you.
00:32:32Yes.
00:32:36Okay.
00:32:41Got it. These look great.
00:32:44One more for good luck.
00:32:47Yeah.
00:32:48Come in.
00:32:49Okay.
00:32:51Oh. All right. All right. You're good inside.
00:32:54Ready?
00:33:02Got it.
00:33:03Good? Yeah.
00:33:04Would you like to go back down to the ground?
00:33:05Yes, please. Let's go.
00:33:06Great.
00:33:07I can't. You do it.
00:33:22Come on, buddy. You'll be fine. Just hit send.
00:33:27Do you really think the change has helped?
00:33:28You know what? I do.
00:33:29I mean, I'm sure we'll get some notes back, but that's to be expected.
00:33:33We can handle notes.
00:33:35You're right. And a deadline's a deadline, right?
00:33:37There's not much else we can do.
00:33:39Okay. Here we go.
00:33:44Done.
00:33:45Attaboy.
00:33:46And now we wait.
00:33:49And now we wait.
00:33:51Just hurry up and wait.
00:33:53So, now that you've, uh, conquered your fear of height, would you water the, uh, plants on the top shelf up there?
00:34:14Very clever segue.
00:34:15But I actually have to leave in a minute to go meet Daniel at the park.
00:34:18Oh!
00:34:19What's on the docket for you two today?
00:34:21Another fear challenge.
00:34:23I just don't know the details yet.
00:34:26Of all the fears I listed, I didn't think you were going to be able to get your hands on rollerblades so quickly.
00:34:31Seems like skating is really making a comeback.
00:34:33Few of the bike rental shops in the city have expanded their horizons into skate rentals.
00:34:38Goes hand in hand with the 90s fashion.
00:34:42Speaking of the 90s, that was probably the last time I put on a pair of these bad boys.
00:34:46Ooh, me too.
00:34:48Your horror story first and then mine?
00:34:52Well, I used to be pretty good until I took a huge fall and had to get knee surgery.
00:34:56Ooh.
00:34:57I can spare you the show and tell, unless...
00:34:59I'm good.
00:35:01Are you squeamish?
00:35:03Well, maybe a little squeamish.
00:35:05A little, just don't want to jinx it.
00:35:07Fair.
00:35:08Your turn.
00:35:09Join me up here and I will tell you a story of young heartbreak that would make Romeo and Juliet look like child's play.
00:35:18I bet it all started when you lost your head for a girl.
00:35:22Big time.
00:35:23It was the sixth grade and I was madly in love with my girlfriend, Colleen Shine.
00:35:30Let me guess.
00:35:31Her smile could light up a room.
00:35:33You know it.
00:35:35We dated for three months, which means we talk like once a month during lunch period.
00:35:41See, that's why I waited to have my first boyfriend until I was a grown, mature eighth grader.
00:35:46We talked every day, if you count passing notes in class as talking.
00:35:52So, it was the end of the year field trip and we were at Skate Town, this big roller rink in Jersey.
00:35:58The lights come down, disco ball starts to spin, and my favorite R&B song comes on.
00:36:04Uh oh.
00:36:05I think I know where this is going.
00:36:06Yeah.
00:36:07I look over at Colleen and she's slow skating with Steve Sherman.
00:36:12No!
00:36:13Not Steve Sherman.
00:36:15Steve Sherman.
00:36:16I was so crushed I never hit the rink again after that.
00:36:20You win.
00:36:21Your emotional scar is much more gnarly than my surgery scar.
00:36:28Are you good?
00:36:29I'm good.
00:36:30I'm good.
00:36:32So, how did it end with Pen Pal Boy?
00:36:35Well, he said he wanted to take things off the page and meet face to face.
00:36:39I didn't feel ready, so I dumped him with a haiku.
00:36:43Sheesh.
00:36:44Ruthless with a pen, even as a youth.
00:37:00You know, that wasn't that bad.
00:37:02I might have to stick with it for the cardio.
00:37:04Yeah, that was a lot more fun than I would remember.
00:37:07So, what next?
00:37:08Matching tattoos?
00:37:09A couple of years conquered?
00:37:11We even had time to stop and reward ourselves.
00:37:14Cheers to that.
00:37:15If we break now, we can head back to the loft space and run through step four.
00:37:19Which is?
00:37:29Body language.
00:37:31The goal here is to use your physicality to send a signal of confidence, not only to the audience, but to your own brain.
00:37:38Make eye contact, especially if you know someone in the audience.
00:37:41You could even make eye contact with Meredith if you're feeling brave.
00:37:46Okay, baby steps.
00:37:48Let's see. Let me try.
00:37:56That's it.
00:37:57Chin up, shoulders back.
00:37:58Shoulders back.
00:38:01That is certainly shoulders back and chin up.
00:38:08Okay, are you taking this seriously?
00:38:09Do you want to learn?
00:38:10Yes.
00:38:11Obviously.
00:38:12All right.
00:38:13I'm going to show you.
00:38:14I know how to walk.
00:38:16I can see that.
00:38:18Ready?
00:38:19Okay.
00:38:20So, feet, shoulders, chin, and we walk.
00:38:25That's the one.
00:38:28And as corny as it might sound.
00:38:31Smile.
00:38:33There it is.
00:38:43Don't tell me. Don't tell me.
00:38:45Should I fall, let it be with grace and...
00:38:50Grace and...
00:38:52levity?
00:38:53Levity of spirit.
00:38:54Shoot.
00:38:55Okay, let's start again.
00:38:57But you were almost done.
00:38:58Can't we just pick it up from here?
00:39:01No, I have to get it right.
00:39:02I have to get it perfect.
00:39:03I'm no improviser when the heat is on.
00:39:05Won't you have to improvise the answers during the interview?
00:39:07I mean, you don't always know what questions they're going to ask.
00:39:11Regardless, I'm not there yet.
00:39:12The point is to get this monologue memorized and down pat
00:39:14so I can work on the other skills I've learned with Daniel.
00:39:17Do you think you might be giving this silly fear of yours a little too much power?
00:39:21Mom.
00:39:23I get what you're saying, but it doesn't feel so silly when I'm up there in fight or flight mode.
00:39:28No, I know.
00:39:29I don't mean to downplay it.
00:39:30It's just that...
00:39:32I think if you just went into it freely without all this build up, you might find some levity of spirit.
00:39:42I wish I could.
00:39:45You can head home if you're tired, but I'm going to stay here and get this perfect.
00:39:49Oh, you really are your father's daughter, aren't you?
00:39:54And I've always said the two of you were sent to teach me a thing or two about diligence.
00:40:01So, from the top.
00:40:05Okay.
00:40:06Should I fall, let it be with grace and levity of spirit.
00:40:11There you go.
00:40:21Thank you guys for coming.
00:40:23I'm a little nervous, but it's going to go.
00:40:26Sorry for the delay.
00:40:27Tom was supposed to be here with the speaker and Mike already.
00:40:29Oh, no.
00:40:30I guess we should reschedule.
00:40:31How about, uh, never?
00:40:35No?
00:40:36No.
00:40:37Hey, guys!
00:40:38Okay.
00:40:39There he is.
00:40:40Great.
00:40:41Sorry I'm late.
00:40:42Hi.
00:40:43You must be Sophie.
00:40:44I'm Tom, Daniel's friend and personal tech department.
00:40:47I paid him to add in the front bit.
00:40:49Well, it's nice to meet you, Tom.
00:40:50Definitely.
00:40:51Thanks for coming through.
00:40:52Yeah, absolutely, man.
00:40:53Feel free to stick around and help us fill in this little crowd we got here.
00:40:55Will do.
00:40:56Let me, uh, just get all set up and I'll be back out here.
00:41:04Okay.
00:41:07Okay, testing, testing.
00:41:08Ooh.
00:41:09Ooh.
00:41:10Whoops.
00:41:11Sorry about that, everyone, but that's why we test.
00:41:14Testing.
00:41:15Testing, testing.
00:41:16Sounds great.
00:41:17Whenever you're ready.
00:41:21All yours.
00:41:22Okay.
00:41:23Okay.
00:41:24Okay.
00:41:46Testing.
00:41:47I can't.
00:41:56I can't.
00:41:57I can't.
00:41:58I can't.
00:41:59I'm sorry.
00:42:00I...
00:42:07Hey, folks.
00:42:08Just wanted to let everyone know about the food trucks that you'll find if you walk down
00:42:12that way.
00:42:14Yep.
00:42:15Just keep walking that way for New York's best food on wheels.
00:42:18Not here.
00:42:19Over there.
00:42:25Sorry, man.
00:42:26Thanks.
00:42:40Just doesn't make any sense.
00:42:42Last time, I couldn't stop babbling.
00:42:44And this time, I forgot how to speak entirely.
00:42:45How am I supposed to fix a problem if my reaction is different every time?
00:42:57I know you have it in you.
00:42:58You work through the coaching steps just as well, if not better than some of my strongest
00:43:07clients.
00:43:08And?
00:43:09I still failed.
00:43:10Why don't we try again later?
00:43:11Oh, no.
00:43:12I'm spent.
00:43:13I get that.
00:43:14No, you don't.
00:43:15Sorry?
00:43:16No, I'm sorry.
00:43:17I didn't mean to snap.
00:43:18I just...
00:43:19There's no way that you could possibly understand what I'm going through because you've always
00:43:20been a natural.
00:43:21Public speaking has always come naturally to me, sure.
00:43:22But I've got my own fear.
00:43:23A big one for me, actually.
00:43:24Writing.
00:43:25Yeah.
00:43:26I know.
00:43:27What?
00:43:28You do.
00:43:29Mm-hmm.
00:43:30I recognize that look in your eyes every time someone mentions your scripts.
00:43:33Some might even call it the chicken stare.
00:43:36So you can just say that.
00:43:39It's just a little bit of a joke.
00:43:41I don't know what you do.
00:43:42Yeah.
00:43:43I don't know what you do.
00:43:44Yeah.
00:43:45I don't know.
00:43:46I don't know what you do.
00:43:47I don't know.
00:43:48I don't know.
00:43:49I don't know.
00:43:50I don't know.
00:43:51I don't know.
00:43:52I don't know.
00:43:53I don't know.
00:43:54I don't know.
00:43:55I don't know.
00:43:56So you caught me, huh?
00:43:57I sure did.
00:43:59Seriously, though.
00:44:02Let me know when you get those notes back in your scripts.
00:44:05I'd love to return the favor and help out.
00:44:09And I promise to be as patient with you as you have been with me.
00:44:16Really.
00:44:17And I will definitely take you up on that when I hear back.
00:44:21Cool.
00:44:23But getting back to you.
00:44:26I think we can try a few more creative ways to tackle this fear that's still blocking.
00:44:31If you'll keep me on, that is.
00:44:33Oh, you're not jumping ship now.
00:44:35Good.
00:44:36Wouldn't want to.
00:44:38We're facing our fears.
00:44:40Let's go.
00:44:41I know exactly when everything went downhill.
00:44:56Fourth grade science fair.
00:44:58And it was my turn to present my diorama.
00:45:01Oh, I forgot about those.
00:45:03You make them out of shoe boxes, right?
00:45:05Yeah.
00:45:06Mine was a deciduous forest scene.
00:45:08I used the trimmings from the plants at my mom's shop to make the trees.
00:45:12It had been about a month since my dad passed.
00:45:19And I guess I was determined to prove to everyone that I was back to being a normal kid.
00:45:25Whatever that meant.
00:45:27Sure.
00:45:28It's a lot for you to be going through at such a young age.
00:45:31So there I was, at the front of the room, ready to go.
00:45:36And all of a sudden, my mind went blank.
00:45:39I started getting really hot.
00:45:41And the walls seemed like they were closing in on me.
00:45:45And the next thing I know, I'm sobbing uncontrollably.
00:45:50And the teachers had to rush me to the bathroom.
00:45:53No.
00:45:54Poor little Sophie.
00:45:55Exactly.
00:45:56That's the part that still sticks with me.
00:45:58Those teachers looking at me with such deep pity.
00:46:04I felt pathetic.
00:46:07And now that I say it out loud, maybe that's the fear.
00:46:11It's not so much the act of speaking in front of everyone, but...
00:46:16The idea that I could be perceived as weak.
00:46:21Yeah, that's deep.
00:46:23Well, the good news...
00:46:29You can never look weak.
00:46:30Because you're not.
00:46:32You're talented.
00:46:34Articulate.
00:46:35Self-assured.
00:46:36Beautiful.
00:46:38Beautiful, huh?
00:46:41Sorry.
00:46:42I mean, you...
00:46:45Hey, Janice.
00:46:46Uh...
00:46:49Which podcast is that again?
00:46:54Um...
00:46:55Sure.
00:46:56Yeah, I think I can make that work.
00:47:06Okay, great.
00:47:08Yeah.
00:47:09I'll be there.
00:47:11Thanks, Janice.
00:47:13I'm gonna be on the Tailored to the Page podcast tomorrow at 9am.
00:47:17Help.
00:47:18Is that the one where they try and imagine what fashion designers the characters in the books are wearing?
00:47:22That's one segment, yes.
00:47:24My protagonist is a tightrope walker.
00:47:27I don't know any famous leotard designers.
00:47:30Is that even a thing?
00:47:32This is actually the perfect warm-up.
00:47:34You get to work on your interview skills without actually having a crowd.
00:47:37Less pressure.
00:47:38Aren't you proud of me?
00:47:43Look at me.
00:47:44Living life on the edge.
00:47:46All the way up here.
00:47:47All the way...
00:47:49It's the fourth floor.
00:47:51Still counts.
00:47:53I'm facing my fears.
00:47:57Actually, you know what?
00:47:59There's one more fear I want to try to conquer before the podcast.
00:48:01It wasn't on your list.
00:48:03Then how do you know it's a fear?
00:48:04I thought I'd have a curveball challenge handy the other day, so...
00:48:09I contacted a local expert in all things Sophie.
00:48:12Who?
00:48:21Tom?
00:48:22Hey.
00:48:23Not who I was referring to, but...
00:48:25Hey Tom?
00:48:26Sorry to interrupt, but...
00:48:28Can I steal you for a bit to talk about the project?
00:48:31Something sort of just...
00:48:33Came up.
00:48:35Yeah.
00:48:36Definitely.
00:48:38Hey, if you're free later, can I meet you at the flower shop?
00:48:41Mom's the expert.
00:48:43Of course.
00:48:45Yeah, I'll be at the flower shop this evening to help her close out.
00:48:48Perfect. See you then.
00:48:49Sounds good.
00:48:50Nice to see you Tom.
00:48:51Likewise.
00:48:52Take care Sophie.
00:48:56Rebel hated the script, didn't they?
00:48:57Let's just say they didn't land.
00:48:58Well.
00:48:59At all.
00:49:03I'm really sorry Tom.
00:49:04I didn't think we were this far off the mark.
00:49:05I know.
00:49:06Me either.
00:49:08Luckily, they're gonna give us another shot.
00:49:10All we gotta do is go in there and give them something totally fresh.
00:49:16Yeah.
00:49:17Yeah.
00:49:18Okay.
00:49:19Let's...
00:49:20Let's do it.
00:49:21With trying to focus on nailing down a brand new concept for the pilot episode.
00:49:27That's a good idea.
00:49:28Yeah.
00:49:29If we could sell them on whatever new direction that we're heading in, then we can build from there.
00:49:33Definitely.
00:49:35Brand new concept.
00:49:40Hey.
00:49:42What about Sophie?
00:49:43Yeah.
00:49:44She actually offered to help with the edits, which will be great.
00:49:47No, no, no, no.
00:49:48I mean, I think she would be a really great case study to focus on for the pilot episode.
00:49:53Honestly, I don't know about that, Tom.
00:49:55Hear me out, buddy.
00:49:56Okay.
00:49:57Rebel said they wanted something more tangible.
00:50:00Less hypothetical, right?
00:50:01Yeah, but I think Sophie's real life story about overcoming her own stage fright could be really inspiring.
00:50:07Plus, she's a rising name.
00:50:09So by the time the series comes out, audiences will already be familiar with her.
00:50:13It's kind of a win-win on the publicity front.
00:50:19Yeah, but...
00:50:20If we were going to use her as a subject in an episode, I would have wanted to ask at the start of the coaching.
00:50:25Alright? Asking midway through feels... shifty.
00:50:29And I don't want her thinking that I have some ulterior motive for helping her.
00:50:32No, no, no. I get that.
00:50:34But...
00:50:36You do take notes on all your clients, right?
00:50:39I assume you have some notes on Sophie?
00:50:42Yes, for my own use.
00:50:45Okay. How about this?
00:50:47We play around with sketching out an episode about Sophie based on the notes you already have.
00:50:51And then if she nails the interview and you think it's appropriate, we can pitch the concept to her at that point.
00:50:57Fine.
00:51:04But...
00:51:05If she isn't absolutely thrilled with how this interview goes, we scrap this idea and we're back to square one.
00:51:11Totally. Scrap it.
00:51:12But, for now, let's just see what notes you already have.
00:51:15Maybe we can get a rough draft going.
00:51:18It's worth a shot.
00:51:21Producers.
00:51:27Producers.
00:51:34Really?
00:51:35You told him I'm afraid of small spaces?
00:51:38Well, I admit it was a bit selfish on my part.
00:51:42But, um...
00:51:43Well, look.
00:51:44The closet is due for reorganization.
00:51:46And I just thought it could be...
00:51:48Maybe your last project in the shop before you become rich and famous.
00:51:52Alright, let's not get too ahead of ourselves.
00:51:54Just speaking it into existence.
00:52:00Oh, and, um, if you two get locked in there, just be sure to scream real loud.
00:52:06Not helping.
00:52:09See? I'm perfectly fine.
00:52:11Wait, what if we get...
00:52:12Traps.
00:52:14We could either walk out...
00:52:18Or we can scream for Evelyn, which would be my vote.
00:52:20Please don't get her going.
00:52:22Here we go.
00:52:25Just like everything else, start with the breath.
00:52:32Instead of focusing on the size of the space, try focusing on what's inside the space.
00:52:39Sweet aromas, beautiful flowers.
00:52:42You ready?
00:52:43Four.
00:52:49This thing on?
00:52:51Welcome to the Inside Floristry Podcast.
00:52:54I'm your host, Daniel Burke.
00:52:56And today, I'm joined by a very special guest.
00:52:59Best-selling author, aspiring daredevil, and master florist, Sophie Wood.
00:53:04How's it going, Sophie?
00:53:05Well, I'm currently cooped up in a closet with a man who's imagining things.
00:53:10But other than that, I'm hanging in there.
00:53:12A little imagination never hurt anyone.
00:53:15In fact, our listeners are going to use their imaginations right now.
00:53:18For those of you who can't see me, which is everyone, I am currently selecting a bunch of flowers and forming a small bouquet.
00:53:29In a moment, Sophie is going to tell us a little bit about each flower.
00:53:33And she's going to rate my bouquet on a scale of one to ten.
00:53:38Here you are, m'lady.
00:53:39Oh, why, thank you, kind sir. They're absolutely lovely.
00:53:49Oh, sorry, kids. The customer just called with a last-minute order.
00:53:53Oh, Daniel, you're tall.
00:53:55Would you mind reaching up into the corner and getting that planter for me?
00:53:59Sure thing.
00:54:01Sorry.
00:54:05Lovely. Thank you.
00:54:09It wasn't so bad, was it?
00:54:12The bouquet?
00:54:14Yeah, I'd give it a solid eight out of ten.
00:54:16Not bad for a rookie.
00:54:18I'll give you a fifteen out of ten for enduring a whole five minutes with a podcaster in a cramped space.
00:54:23All you gotta do tomorrow is wake up and repeat.
00:54:25It'll be a piece of cake.
00:54:26You know what? Maybe you're right.
00:54:28There you go.
00:54:30Right on, baby.
00:54:32Yeah, here you go.
00:54:34This will ensure you both get a decent night's sleep.
00:54:37Just put it under your pillow.
00:54:39Will do, thank you.
00:54:41I'll see you tomorrow around 8.45?
00:54:43Yeah, I'll be there at 8.30, but no rush.
00:54:45And text me if you want coffee.
00:54:47It's a pleasure seeing you, Evelyn.
00:54:48You too, hon.
00:54:49See you soon.
00:54:51Yeah, looks like the two of you are getting along very well.
00:54:55Yeah, he's been, uh, he's been great, actually.
00:55:00I just hope it all works out.
00:55:02You know, the tour and the interview and everything.
00:55:08Well, I have a funny feeling it'll all work out just fine.
00:55:12That came fast.
00:55:13Uh, I'll be right back, Mom.
00:55:14Come on.
00:55:15Daniel!
00:55:16Hey!
00:55:17Did I forget something?
00:55:18No, but I ordered this for you, and it just came in.
00:55:19For me?
00:55:20Yes.
00:55:21This is one of my favorite writing journals.
00:55:22It has a daily prompt on each page, and it's what I always do.
00:55:23It's what I always do.
00:55:24I always do.
00:55:25I always do.
00:55:26I always do.
00:55:27I always do.
00:55:28I always do.
00:55:29I always do.
00:55:30I always do.
00:55:31I always do.
00:55:32I always do.
00:55:33I always do.
00:55:34I always do.
00:55:35Oh, what?
00:55:36What do I do?
00:55:37Hey!
00:55:38Did I forget something?
00:55:39No.
00:55:40But I ordered this for you, and it just came in.
00:55:41Me?
00:55:42Yes.
00:55:43This is one of my favorite writing journals.
00:55:45It has a daily prompt on each page, and it's what I always use whenever I'm going through
00:55:49writer's block.
00:55:50It helps get the creative juices flowing.
00:55:54Which is more romantic?
00:55:56Sunrise or Sunset and Y?
00:56:00I guess I'd have to say Sunset!
00:56:01Oh no, no.
00:56:02No, no, no. Gotta write it down.
00:56:04Right.
00:56:05I guess I'll have to noodle on this one when I get home then.
00:56:11Thank you, Sophie. This was really thoughtful.
00:56:15It's the least I could do.
00:56:17Get home safe, okay?
00:56:19You too. Good night.
00:56:32Good night.
00:56:50Okay.
00:56:57Morning.
00:56:59Sorry. Sorry.
00:57:01I didn't want to disturb your reading.
00:57:03Don't worry. I'll get you back one of these days when you least expect it.
00:57:06I'm sure you will.
00:57:08That's how you feel it. Ready?
00:57:11I'm good.
00:57:12I think.
00:57:13You're good. I know.
00:57:18Sophie!
00:57:19Oh, it is so nice to meet you.
00:57:21Georgia, it's a pleasure.
00:57:23Please, call me Gigi.
00:57:24This is my friend, Daniel.
00:57:25Hi.
00:57:26Daniel, nice to meet you.
00:57:27Likewise.
00:57:28Alright, right this way.
00:57:29Okay.
00:57:31Alright, so we're gonna have you over here.
00:57:36Okay.
00:57:41Thank you so much for coming in last minute.
00:57:43Oh, of course.
00:57:44Big fan of the show.
00:57:45Oh, I'm a big fan of the book.
00:57:47Seriously, I finished it all in one day.
00:57:48Really?
00:57:49Mm-hmm.
00:57:50It's amazing.
00:57:51It was.
00:57:52Seriously, such a treat.
00:57:53Oh, I almost forgot about our lightning round questions for later.
00:57:58Uh, lightning round?
00:58:00I don't remember that being part of the segment of the episodes I studied.
00:58:04I mean, listen to.
00:58:05Oh, well, you're gonna be the very first guest we try this with.
00:58:08The producers just thought it would be a really fun way to wrap up the show.
00:58:11Oh, um, is there any sort of, uh, hint as to the type of questions in this lightning round?
00:58:17Well, that would be cheating, but, um, I promise you they're all really fun.
00:58:21So just don't even worry about it.
00:58:22Yeah, I'm sure.
00:58:23Mm-hmm.
00:58:24Okay, so in just a couple moments here, we will be good to go.
00:58:28Alrighty.
00:58:29You ready?
00:58:30Yep, yep.
00:58:31Oh my gosh, do you need some water?
00:58:34I should have asked.
00:58:35Oh, no, no, no, no, I'm okay.
00:58:37Trust me.
00:58:39Hydration is key.
00:58:40You would not believe how much these mics will pick up on a scratchy voice.
00:58:45Scratchy voice, head cold.
00:58:47I swear, the more recording I do, the more I feel like these mics are just a window to the soul.
00:58:53Uh, wow.
00:58:54That's, uh...
00:58:55So, when I press this button here, the recording will start.
00:58:59Are you ready?
00:59:01Ready.
00:59:06Hello, all you bookworm fashionistas.
00:59:08I am Georgia Marks, and this is Tailored to the Page.
00:59:13Our guest today is an icon in the making.
00:59:17Not only is her very first novel, Walking on Air, an instant bestseller,
00:59:23but you will also have to believe me when I tell you her style is immaculate.
00:59:29Welcome, Sophie Wood, and thank you for bringing your book and your look today.
00:59:36Hi.
00:59:37Thanks for...
00:59:38Thanks for having me.
00:59:40Okay, so we will get to talking about your incredible novel in just a moment.
00:59:44But first, I must know.
00:59:47Where did you get this jacket?
00:59:49It is so sleek.
00:59:51All of you listeners, don't worry.
00:59:52I will post a photo on my IG.
00:59:55I got it some...
00:59:58I think I got it online, actually.
01:00:00Um...
01:00:12Are you okay?
01:00:14Can we stop?
01:00:17Is everything okay?
01:00:19Oh, yeah.
01:00:20Um...
01:00:21Sorry, I'm actually...
01:00:22I think I actually might be coming down with something.
01:00:25Oh, no!
01:00:26Yeah, I woke up today feeling a little blah, but I wanted to power through.
01:00:30Um...
01:00:31But I don't want to leave you with a...
01:00:32with a bad recording.
01:00:33Is there any chance that I could reschedule once I'm feeling better?
01:00:36Of course.
01:00:37Don't even worry about it.
01:00:38Let me grab you a ginger ale.
01:00:49Oh!
01:00:50Okay.
01:00:52All right.
01:00:53Hi.
01:00:54I will walk you out.
01:00:55Um...
01:01:00That was quick.
01:01:02Feel better soon, Sophie.
01:01:03I will have our producers reach out to our people again next week to see about a redo, if that sounds good.
01:01:07Sounds great.
01:01:08Uh, thank you so much for understanding.
01:01:10Um, sorry again for all the trouble.
01:01:13Oh, please, don't apologize.
01:01:14Seriously, just rest up.
01:01:16All right.
01:01:17Hey, come on.
01:01:18Keep going.
01:01:21What happened?
01:01:22I'll tell you later.
01:01:23I'll tell you later.
01:01:41So I'm guessing you're not actually...
01:01:42No, I'm not actually sick.
01:01:45But that microphone up there saw directly into my soul and it wasn't pretty.
01:01:48Huh?
01:01:51Can we go back to the loft?
01:01:53Maybe you can try to hypnotize me.
01:01:54Whatever we can do to fix my brain in the next 48 hours.
01:01:58My expert advice?
01:02:00Write this off as a bump in the road.
01:02:02And try and relax for the next few days.
01:02:04Good one.
01:02:06Okay, I know.
01:02:07You're still gonna practice and stew over it up until the big events.
01:02:09So...
01:02:11How about we pencil in a mandatory dinner break?
01:02:14Tonight, for the rest and recovery.
01:02:16Coach's orders.
01:02:22Guess I do need to eat at some point.
01:02:40Let me guess.
01:02:43Dear diary.
01:02:45Daniel's running late and I can't wait to tease him about it.
01:02:48It's more like, dear diary.
01:02:50Remind me to ask Daniel if he knows any body doubles that can stand in for me at the interview.
01:02:55We have tried a lot of creative techniques, but that would definitely push us in a bold new direction.
01:03:04Cheers.
01:03:05Cheers.
01:03:07Hmm.
01:03:11So?
01:03:13What are you really writing in there?
01:03:15Just some notes for my next novel.
01:03:18Already on to the next one.
01:03:20Manifesting that three book deal.
01:03:23The truth is, I'd still be working on my next novel even if I knew I'd never get paid again.
01:03:28Hmm.
01:03:30Why do you write?
01:03:31Well, for one thing, I love the comfort of knowing that a book has a solid beginning, middle and end.
01:03:40Hmm.
01:03:41Whereas real life, a bit more unpredictable.
01:03:44Very true indeed.
01:03:45Right?
01:03:47One moment you're quietly drawing up plots and characters between flower orders and the next you're going on tour.
01:03:52But I think more than anything, writing is like breathing to me.
01:04:01Like it allows me to tap into this power that doesn't exist for me in the real world.
01:04:05That's exactly how I feel on stage.
01:04:08Like tuned all the way in or something.
01:04:11Yes.
01:04:13And I think I want to pay it forward.
01:04:16There were certain books and stories that stitched me back together when I was going through some of my darkest hours.
01:04:23And the thought of being able to touch even just one person in that same way is what keeps me going.
01:04:34Well, consider me one touched reader among many.
01:04:40You read my book?
01:04:41I did. I did.
01:04:43Full disclosure, I started it with the goal of trying to get some clues into your psyche.
01:04:47Oh, and what do you think? What's the verdict?
01:04:49The only concrete conclusion that I could come up with?
01:04:53The world means your voice and your story, Sophie.
01:04:57Oh, that's very sweet.
01:04:59No, no, I'm not saying that to be sweet.
01:05:02What I read in your book are the words of someone who believes in hope.
01:05:08Gravery and tenacity.
01:05:10And wouldn't it be a shame for that same person to let anything stun her into silence?
01:05:16Much less a little stage fright.
01:05:20I'm aware of the brutal irony, yes.
01:05:25Why don't you try thinking of this book tour as just another way to share your words with the world?
01:05:31Because what you have to say matters, Sophie.
01:05:34And nothing can take that from you.
01:05:50Well, you've certainly had a day for the books, I'll give you that.
01:05:54That is so true.
01:05:59Such a classic.
01:06:00Shall we?
01:06:01Shall we?
01:06:10Lunches and cold hotels.
01:06:11We're feeling hard to meet empty stairwells.
01:06:12And out the fire escape, escape.
01:06:16Sweet empty stairwells
01:06:19And out the fire
01:06:21Escape
01:06:22Escape
01:06:25Wow
01:06:30Pulling out all the big moves
01:06:32Feeling inspired, what can I say?
01:06:39Thank you, Daniel
01:06:40For everything
01:06:43Thank you
01:06:44For taking a chance and trusting me
01:06:47Well
01:06:49I can't really take all the credit for that
01:06:52Janice did have to force me into it
01:06:55And I'm glad she did
01:07:00This song, on the other hand
01:07:10I'm not so sure about
01:07:12We're gonna have to agree to disagree on that one
01:07:14Oh, I like that move, what was that?
01:07:18Oh, yes, yes
01:07:19That's your specialty
01:07:20Oh, yeah?
01:07:20That's your signature move?
01:07:22It's the first one
01:07:23Okay, my ride should be here in two minutes
01:07:31I meant to ask you
01:07:32Have you heard back on those scripts yet?
01:07:34Yeah, we are back at square one, unfortunately
01:07:38Oh no, I'm so sorry
01:07:40Well, why don't you send me what you have now
01:07:43And I'll see if I can help come up with some fresh story ideas
01:07:45Yeah, I was thinking I'd send you a few examples
01:07:48After your interview was out of the way
01:07:49Oh no, just go ahead and send them tonight
01:07:50I mean, I'll be up practicing anyway
01:07:53And I'm sure a distraction will come in handy at some point
01:07:55What about getting some rest?
01:07:57Who needs rest?
01:07:59Oh, that's me
01:08:01It's just around the corner there
01:08:02Oh, here, here, you take this
01:08:04What are you gonna do?
01:08:06I will be fine
01:08:07Are you sure?
01:08:08I will be fine, I'm sure
01:08:09Yeah, yeah
01:08:09Well, thank you
01:08:10All right
01:08:10Sophie, go to bed
01:08:12Yeah, yeah
01:08:12I will
01:08:13That's a great question, Olivia
01:08:23Uh, no
01:08:25Don't, don't say that
01:08:26Just answer the question
01:08:28Start over
01:08:29Well, of course
01:08:32I've always dreamt of this kind of response
01:08:34And, you know
01:08:37Ugh
01:08:39Don't go anywhere
01:09:09I can't
01:09:14No
01:09:16Oh
01:09:18Oh
01:09:34Oh
01:09:36Oh
01:09:36Oh
01:09:37Oh
01:09:37Oh
01:09:38Oh
01:10:40Sophie!
01:10:44It's Daniel.
01:10:47I come bearing coffees and a good luck gift.
01:10:52Um, now's not really a good time.
01:10:56Oh, you okay?
01:10:57I thought we were meeting at the loft at our usual times.
01:11:01Did you just wake up?
01:11:08Guilty as charged.
01:11:10Anything else you want to take note of?
01:11:12Is everything okay?
01:11:17So, tell me.
01:11:20What's your final hypothesis?
01:11:22Will I get through the interview tomorrow?
01:11:24Or will the most complex case you've ever encountered end in total disaster?
01:11:29Hey, Sophie, I-
01:11:32Didn't mean to send me the episode you were writing about me behind my back?
01:11:35Yeah.
01:11:36I figured.
01:11:39It is not what it looks like.
01:11:40We just thought that we could work-
01:11:42I didn't even want your help to begin with.
01:11:43And yet, somehow, here we are.
01:11:45Was this your plan the whole time?
01:11:48To treat me like some sort of lab rat?
01:11:50No.
01:11:51No, it's not that at all.
01:11:52Okay?
01:11:53Tom just thought that we-
01:11:54You know what the worst part of it is?
01:11:55I was actually starting to believe that maybe I could do it.
01:12:00Maybe I could just go out there and forget what anyone thinks.
01:12:03You can and you will.
01:12:05Look, I promise that I can explain-
01:12:07Sorry, I-
01:12:08I just don't have time for this.
01:12:09Right now.
01:12:10Sophie, wait.
01:12:11I can explain.
01:12:17Um, I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, but your services will no longer be needed.
01:12:23I guess you'll have to find a new muse.
01:12:26Fine.
01:12:27But if I can leave you with just one last piece of advice.
01:12:30I've had my fill on advice.
01:12:32Thanks.
01:12:40Step out of your own way.
01:12:52Might be surprised by what you find.
01:13:04Homemade lunch has arrived!
01:13:07Or, ooh.
01:13:10Should I say brunch?
01:13:13A girl spends one day in her PJs and everyone gets on her case.
01:13:16Hey, hey.
01:13:17I didn't say it wasn't a cute look, did I?
01:13:21How's it going, honey?
01:13:23Just about as well as it looks.
01:13:26Looks like maybe it's time to tap out and go with the flow.
01:13:30Mom, I keep telling you-
01:13:31I know it's a cliché.
01:13:33It's not that it's cliché.
01:13:34It's that it doesn't work for me the way it works for you.
01:13:38I didn't inherit your carefree, Jean.
01:13:41Believe me, I wish I did.
01:13:43Right.
01:13:44So then your life could just be as easy breezy as mine is?
01:13:48Hm?
01:13:49Okay, no.
01:13:50No, I'm sorry.
01:13:51I shouldn't have said that.
01:13:52I didn't mean it.
01:13:53I know your life hasn't been easy for you.
01:13:54Not at all.
01:13:55Hm.
01:13:58Well, I know sometimes even if you do go with the flow,
01:14:02it doesn't mean you'll never hit choppy waters.
01:14:05Hm.
01:14:06I'll definitely be filing today under choppy.
01:14:09Hm?
01:14:10First I blow up at Daniel, next I'm being testy with you.
01:14:14Not my best work.
01:14:16Hi, what happened with Daniel?
01:14:18Turns out he's writing an episode about me for his web series.
01:14:21And apparently I'm the most complex client he's ever encountered.
01:14:26Can you believe that?
01:14:28Well, actually, yeah.
01:14:31What?
01:14:32Look, the guy spent days cooking up unique and, okay, sometimes strange ways
01:14:38to help you overcome a major fear that's holding you back.
01:14:43So, yeah, I'd say that's pretty...
01:14:46Complex?
01:14:47Fine, but he could have at least told me about it first or asked for my permission to be in the episode.
01:14:53Why so sneaky?
01:14:54Yeah, that is odd.
01:14:56Did he say why he never told you?
01:14:58No.
01:14:59We didn't get to that.
01:15:03Or I guess...
01:15:05I didn't let him get to that.
01:15:07Well, maybe your paths will cross again after this storm subsides and...
01:15:14Then you can get to the bottom of what his true intentions were.
01:15:18Maybe.
01:15:20But no matter what happens in the future, just trust yourself.
01:15:27Okay?
01:15:28You know why?
01:15:31Why?
01:15:32Because the flow rewards those who are tough enough to hang in there, even in the toughest currents.
01:15:40So, do yourself a favor and get a grip, will ya?
01:15:45Will ya?
01:15:49I'm trying.
01:15:51Mwah!
01:16:07Okay.
01:16:08Decision time.
01:16:09Should we take a taxi, walk, or the train to Nate's party?
01:16:14Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna go.
01:16:18And...
01:16:20I am sorry to spring this on you now, but...
01:16:23That Sophie episode is officially off the table.
01:16:26No! No, no, no!
01:16:28What happened?
01:16:30Still trying to figure that one out.
01:16:32Oh...
01:16:34You finally asked her out and she...
01:16:36Turned you down?
01:16:37Man, I really wish you'd waited until after we found out about the episode...
01:16:39What? No!
01:16:41Dude, why would you think I was gonna ask her out?
01:16:44Hmm, where would I get a wild idea like that from?
01:16:51Okay, it may have crossed my mind a time or two, but our professional relationship has been my top priority since day one.
01:16:56Oh yeah, of course. Totally.
01:16:58Other matters now anyway, I'm pretty sure she hates me.
01:17:01Yeah, I don't know about that.
01:17:03Okay, hate might be a strong word.
01:17:17Yes, you forgot your hot plate, and yes, I washed it.
01:17:21Oh!
01:17:23I thought you were my mom.
01:17:26Well, I do hope to be as cool as her one day.
01:17:29For the record, I'm going to bed soon.
01:17:33Yeah, no, no, I won't be long. I just...
01:17:36Really still wanted to give you this.
01:17:40Thanks.
01:17:42And to tell you that I'm sorry.
01:17:44Look, I was never gonna produce anything without getting your permission.
01:17:47Tom and I were just brainstorming some ideas, and we thought that your story, or even exaggerated version of your story, could be a really interesting one to tell.
01:18:00I bet it would.
01:18:01I should have told you as soon as it came up, but I was so close to your interview, I didn't want to psych you out.
01:18:09The plan, obviously, backfired.
01:18:12Just a little bit.
01:18:14But, um...
01:18:18Thank you for this.
01:18:20Um...
01:18:22Really.
01:18:24I, uh...
01:18:28I should really take your advice and get some rest.
01:18:31Long day tomorrow, obviously.
01:18:33Absolutely.
01:18:35Good luck tomorrow, Sophie.
01:18:40Good night.
01:18:41Good night.
01:19:09Good night.
01:19:10I love you.
01:19:40Get a grip.
01:20:10Would you?
01:20:12Okay.
01:20:13Shoulders back.
01:20:15Up.
01:20:16Hands.
01:20:17Oops.
01:20:18Okay.
01:20:31Hate to interrupt.
01:20:33Janice!
01:20:35Hi!
01:20:36What am I interrupting?
01:20:37It looks fun.
01:20:39Oh, I was just doing the tube man.
01:20:41Just something silly to calm the nerves.
01:20:43Daniel taught me, actually.
01:20:45Oh, yes.
01:20:46Isn't he wonderful?
01:20:47He is.
01:20:49He really is.
01:20:51I'm sure you're ready to knock this thing out of the park.
01:20:54As ready as I'll ever be.
01:20:56Great.
01:20:57Well, I'm going to check in with the media partners.
01:20:58You come find me if you need me.
01:21:00Yeah.
01:21:01Sounds good.
01:21:02Oh, wait.
01:21:03Is Olivia here yet?
01:21:04I would really love to meet her before we start.
01:21:06Yeah.
01:21:07So here's the thing.
01:21:08Olivia's big on meeting guests for the first time during the interview.
01:21:12Oh.
01:21:13Uh, cool.
01:21:14Great.
01:21:15Yeah.
01:21:16Something about it feeling more fresh that way.
01:21:18Right.
01:21:19Yeah.
01:21:20Totally.
01:21:21Totally fine.
01:21:22Great.
01:21:23Yeah.
01:21:25Totally fine to meet my childhood icon in front of an audience.
01:21:28Yeah.
01:21:29Okay.
01:21:30Whew.
01:21:31May I sit beside you, please?
01:21:45Oh, thanks.
01:21:46I've been listening to you today, Bernard.
01:21:47Oh, my God.
01:21:48It's all right.
01:21:49She's been listening to you, too.
01:21:50If we've ever seen her later, go to your chorus more.
01:21:51Oh, yeah, you're like.
01:21:52Oh, yeah.
01:21:53Okay.
01:21:54Good.
01:21:55Good.
01:21:56Good.
01:21:57Good.
01:21:58Good.
01:21:59Good.
01:22:00Good.
01:22:01Good.
01:22:02Good.
01:22:03Good.
01:22:04We're all right.
01:22:05Good.
01:22:06Good.
01:22:07Good.
01:22:08Good.
01:22:09Good.
01:22:10Good.
01:22:11Good.
01:22:12Good.
01:22:13Good.
01:22:14Good.
01:22:15Good.
01:22:16Good evening. Can you hear me in the back there? Well, thank you everyone for joining
01:22:22us tonight. I am thrilled to be here to discuss Walking on Air. Everyone, please give a warm
01:22:30welcome to Sophie Wood. Such a treat to meet you.
01:22:38Well, let's get right into it, shall we? Yes. Oh, sorry. Oh, no worries. So, Sophie, tell
01:22:52us how you heard the good news about your bestseller. Better? Okay. So, yeah, I woke up
01:23:02in the morning, obviously, and I read it in the paper. We still get the paper at my mom's
01:23:11flower shop. It's my day job. And so, yeah, that's where I was. Well, that's a good segue
01:23:20to my next question. It is? Yes. They say write what you know. So, my question is, are you
01:23:30a pro on the tightrope when you're not writing? And if so, can you demonstrate for us after
01:23:34this? Wow. A curveball and a challenge. Well, I hate to disappoint you, but I'm actually terrified
01:23:43of heights. But I did visit a very tall building this week, so I just might be getting closer
01:23:51to giving it a try. Don't ask me to join you. I am a big fan of gravity. Tell us about Sasha,
01:24:01your protagonist. Where did the inspiration for her character come from? Right. So, my process
01:24:08is very much about research. And when I first read about the first female tightrope walker
01:24:14to ever, um, to ever, uh, sorry, yes, the main character was inspired by a real-life circus
01:24:26artist. But as far as her inner dialogue, her perseverance, her drive, her unwavering belief
01:24:32to do whatever she set her mind to, all of that was inspired by my mom, Evelyn. She raised
01:24:42me as a single mom in the city with very few resources after we lost my dad. And as a child,
01:24:48I remember thinking that some kind of luck or magic was at play. Somehow, we always got
01:24:54by. Somehow, we still managed to laugh and smell the roses. Somehow, we healed. But much
01:25:05like tightrope walking, there's nothing magical about it. She got us both through by taking
01:25:11one step at a time, balancing both strength and softness, never once letting us fall.
01:25:19Is mom here? Oh, yes. Uh, she's right there, actually. Let's give mom a round of applause.
01:25:38It was so great to have you on the show. Thanks again.
01:25:42I cannot believe this whole time you thought of me as a svelte and nimble acrobat.
01:25:54Even the bravest of daredevils have nothing on you.
01:25:58Well, you hung on tight up there.
01:26:02Can I get in here? Oh, yes.
01:26:07Meredith McEvins from Grapevine. So nice to meet you.
01:26:10Miss McEvins, it's an honor. Thank you for coming.
01:26:13Oh, of course. I just talked to Janice and confirmed our dinner. If that still works,
01:26:18I'd love to discuss what's next for you.
01:26:20Yes. I can't wait to chat.
01:26:22Great.
01:26:23Amazing job up there, Sophie. Thank you so much.
01:26:37Oh, I mean, I knew you'd get through it, but that was beyond. The chemistry with Olivia, unreal.
01:26:43You think? Oh, it was fantastic. And the book deal's all but signed. Don't be surprised if Meredith
01:26:49draws up the contract over appetizers. Wow.
01:26:54And thanks again for letting me connect you with Daniel.
01:26:56Oh, thank you for the recommendation. I think it's safe to say it definitely helps.
01:27:01Oh, definitely. I couldn't get over his face when he was watching you up there just now.
01:27:06He looked so happy for you.
01:27:09Really?
01:27:10Mm-hmm.
01:27:12Is he still here?
01:27:12Mm-hmm.
01:27:16Right over there.
01:27:33You did it!
01:27:34Did I?
01:27:36You were incredible 20 out of 10.
01:27:39Listen, I'm sorry I didn't hear you out yesterday. I'm scared.
01:27:42Nah, I shouldn't have started anything without your permission. I was just inspired.
01:27:48Let's make the episode. Together.
01:27:51Are you sure? Really, it's fine if we just keep everything between us.
01:27:55I thought you said I had a story to share with the world.
01:27:58Wouldn't be very honest if I held back the messy parts, would it?
01:28:01I can't argue there.
01:28:04Good. Looking forward to our next project.
01:28:08I wonder what other fears we'll conquer along the way.
01:28:14You know, there's actually something I've been a little scared to do for a while now.
01:28:21You need to be shy.
01:28:21Good.
01:28:26Thank you, Maya.
01:28:28Bye.
01:28:29Bye.
01:28:30Bye.
01:28:32Bye.
01:28:38Bye.
