00:00We are here together to talk with Professor Luis Ignaro.
00:08Welcome Professor Ignaro.
00:10Luis Ignaro is an American biochemist
00:13and Professor Emeritus of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology
00:18at the University of California in Los Angeles.
00:22Luis Ignaro was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 in medicine
00:28for his contribution to the discovery of the role of nitric oxide in the cardiovascular system.
00:36And in 2019 he joined the Scientific Committee of the Fondazione Menarini
00:42providing an outstanding contribution to research and expertise
00:47in the medical, biological and pharmacological field.
00:51Since 1976, the Fondazione Menarini has organized over 750 international conferences
00:59on topics of specific interest to doctors and researchers,
01:03focusing on the innovative aspects and practical application
01:07of scientific discoveries in society.
01:10So my question is, in what way do you think these conferences have contributed
01:15to progress in medicine and research?
01:19I know of no other organization other than the Menarini Foundation
01:23that has taken the time and energy to organize so many international conferences
01:29on so many different topics that are of specific interest to physicians
01:35and biomedical researchers.
01:37These conferences have contributed importantly to progress in medicine and biomedical research
01:45because each conference focuses on cutting-edge medical and biological topics
01:51by bringing together the most knowledgeable opinion leaders in the field.
01:57This interchange and exchange of expertise and ideas is the most effective way to foster collaboration
02:07and fuel the progress and advancement of science and medicine.
02:13In addition to these international conferences, the Menarini Foundation contributes to medicine
02:20through promoting research, education, and scientific dissemination in the fields of biology, pharmacology, and medicine.
02:31Moreover, the Menarini Foundation has developed scientific initiatives such as the Dialogues Beyond Borders series,
02:41which features interviews with Nobel laureates and leading scientists, providing insights into the human stories
02:52behind groundbreaking discoveries in medicine.
02:57And it doesn't stop there.
02:59The foundation also supports medical education through grants and donations,
03:05including attendance at courses and conferences.
03:10And last but not least, the Menarini Foundation utilizes various platforms, including online resources and multimedia content,
03:22to share scientific information with healthcare professionals and the public as well.
03:29The Fondazione Menarini has confirmed its independent scientific committee,
03:35presided by yourself, together with Professor Legato, Professor Fabri and Professor Crea.
03:42So, how would you describe the importance of independence?
03:48Very important.
03:50It is truly an honor and pleasure to work side by side with Professors Crea, Fabri and Legato on the scientific committee of the Menarini Foundation.
04:02You see, each of these experts brings a unique background, expertise, and body of knowledge to our advisory committee.
04:13And so, working together, we will continue to evaluate the proposals brought forth by the foundation and make appropriate recommendations.
04:24Since we each come from a different background, I think we can function very well as an independent committee to the benefit of the foundation.
04:35Well, my last question is, as a winner of the Nobel Prize, which recommendations would you give to the next generation leaders?
04:46Well, that's always a difficult answer to give, but I can tell you that as a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine,
04:58I feel that I can give some useful advice to the next generation of leaders.
05:05In my opinion, the four most important characteristics of a successful leader are curiosity, motivation, perseverance, and thinking outside the box.
05:23Curiosity means asking why and how.
05:28Motivation means being driven to achieve your goals.
05:34Perseverance means never giving up no matter how frustrating your journey.
05:43And thinking outside the box means engaging in original thinking instead of just improving what others may have done.
05:56And I can close by saying, do not go where the path may lead.
06:02Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
06:07Thank you very much for your time, Professor Iñaro.
