00:00Imagine you had the chance to build the home of your dreams in one of the most stunning
00:05countries in the world, New Zealand, taking your pick of its pristine beaches, rugged
00:12mountain ranges, untouched countryside, or built up cityscapes.
00:17That is kind of taking understated to the extreme.
00:21Where would you build?
00:23On a cliff top?
00:24This is the life, isn't it?
00:27In the mountains?
00:29Can you imagine living here?
00:32Or along the coast?
00:34I could not think of anything more fun.
00:37What would you build?
00:39A remote hideaway?
00:40This is the stuff dreams are made of.
00:42An inner city sanctuary?
00:44You sleep so well in here.
00:46Well, stop imagining, because I'm in New Zealand, taking you to explore some of the country's
00:52most stunning locations.
00:54I'm Phil Spencer.
00:56This is New Zealand's best homes.
00:59Come with me.
01:01This is going to be fun.
01:03It can feel like everywhere you go in this amazing country.
01:11Around every corner.
01:15The views can change in the blink of an eye.
01:21One minute, you're cruising past the most pristine white sand beach.
01:25Next, you're suddenly in the mountains, wondering if you've missed a turn off.
01:30When is this heaven on earth?
01:31I think it's my heaven on earth.
01:33The houses I'm visiting today have all been built on extraordinary plots.
01:39And while they may look very different, all have been designed to capture that one-of-a-kind view.
01:46And when you're talking about views, you can't go past the Coromandel Peninsula.
01:52And while only a couple of hours east of Auckland, it feels like a world away.
01:59Laid-back settlements, rugged coastlines, and some of the country's best beaches.
02:07And what better way to arrive to a spot like this than by boat?
02:15How about one with wheels?
02:22Definitely putting one of those on the Christmas list.
02:32There's loads of different ways to enjoy the beaches.
02:35There's holiday homes of all different shapes and sizes, as well as lots of campgrounds like this one, dotted up and down the coastline.
02:42And it is at this campground in Har Hay, on the Coromandel, where the owners of the next house that I'm going to see spent loads of time with their young family.
02:50And then when the plot came up for sale next door, they bought it.
02:57Har Hay House is a five-bedroom, two-level holiday home, or batch as they call them in these parks.
03:05Perched above pristine white sands and the blue Pacific Ocean.
03:11Multiple indoor and outdoor spaces to stay, play and holiday.
03:17The architect behind this beauty is my old mate, Paul Clarke.
03:27G'day, Phil. How are you?
03:28Oh, very good indeed. Thank you. And you?
03:30Great. Come on in. Come round the side.
03:44Hey, Phil. How are you doing?
03:45Very well, mate. Good to see you.
03:46And you? I heard you've been designing some more masterpieces. I'd better come and look.
03:50Always trying. Excellent.
03:52Come on in. Have a look around.
03:53After you.
04:01So what have you got for me this time?
04:03Well, this is a beach house that we've done to celebrate this amazing beach that you've just come from for a wonderful family.
04:11Yeah.
04:14Pretty amazing.
04:15Oh, my goodness me.
04:23I'm in incredible position.
04:25I feel like I'm in a kind of virtual reality world, but actually people live with that view.
04:41Yeah. It's pretty special.
04:44What a spot.
04:45Yeah.
04:46That's why we sort of placed it here.
04:48And it just feels like being on the bow of a ship.
04:51It's pretty amazing.
04:52What was the brief from the client? What do they ask you to create?
05:03Well, they'd been on the site for about three years and living in the old house.
05:08In the old house.
05:09Okay.
05:10So the idea was to celebrate the beach, but also be able to bring people in and have private space, be connected, but disconnected.
05:17So it was a family batch.
05:20Well, it's a little more than that.
05:22It's a little bit more than a batch now, but yeah.
05:24That was the idea.
05:25Okay.
05:26They had this idea of a Cape Cod house in mind, which didn't seem appropriate really for the site.
05:33So it was just a matter of working with them and convincing them that there was a way to be, I suppose, more in keeping with the environment that was here.
05:41So together the owners and Paul began the journey of designing a home that was worthy of this once in a lifetime position.
05:50Paul presented his first concept.
05:54And while it was quite different to what the owners had envisioned, they loved it.
05:58It's very beachy.
05:59Yeah.
06:00I mean, it's just, you had to do it like this.
06:01Yeah.
06:02The plants were amazing because it wasn't something that was preconceived.
06:06And there's also these little moments in respect of the patterning of the sand on the beach.
06:16This is the way that we folded the roof.
06:18Yes, I can see that.
06:21The craftsmanship that's gone into this is phenomenal.
06:24Yeah.
06:25Timber.
06:26So much timber.
06:27The little play on the timber in respect of the old timber house, but also actually creating a really soft interior that allowed it to be used all year round with just a real joy.
06:42You can't help but feel joy in this space.
06:45The sunlight, the water, sound of the waves crashing.
06:49Life would be pretty good no matter the season.
06:53This home shines in summer, sure, but a winter's day, wild weather, fire on, roast lamb in the oven while the family play board games.
07:02All sounds pretty good to me.
07:05What a day.
07:07The position is just extreme.
07:10Well, absolutely.
07:11And there are a lot of things that you have to deal with in terms of the coastal erosion and actually being sensible about where the building was to be placed.
07:19But the old house was positioned in it here.
07:21Yeah.
07:22So the idea was to find the old sea wall, make it structurally sound.
07:27Okay.
07:28And this is what we've done.
07:29What an exciting project for everybody involved, because you knew the position.
07:34They knew the position.
07:35Yeah.
07:36They were living here.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Yeah.
07:39It's been a joy.
07:40What about that very cool fireplace?
07:42Yeah.
07:43That's quite a piece.
07:45A 360 degree rotating fireplace hangs from the ceiling.
07:49A clever design compromise.
07:51The owners wanting a fire in the main room, but Paul keen to keep the unobstructed views.
07:56Yeah.
07:57The rotation is great because you can have it going and you can actually be sitting out here having a glass of wine.
08:02We're having the heat this way.
08:05With surroundings like this, a practical indoor outdoor entertaining area was essential.
08:11I can see you've got the same detail on the roof here.
08:15Yeah.
08:16Cover from rain and sun, large outdoor barbecue, pizza oven and fire.
08:25You've got a Paul Clark chimney.
08:27You've got a nice little pot on it.
08:30Yeah.
08:31And multiple breakout zones if you want some time out by yourself.
08:42So that's kitchen, living, dining, hub of house.
08:45Yes.
08:46There's three main buildings, really, that are connected by this pivotal point in the middle, which is a stairwell.
08:52Okay.
08:53It's the access way.
08:59The staircase is a work of art in itself, isn't it?
09:02Yeah.
09:03I mean, the craft in this place.
09:05Yeah.
09:06It's incredible.
09:07A team of meticulous local tradespeople and some Paul Clark specialists worked together to ensure the finishing was perfectly precise.
09:20Nothing left to chance.
09:22No.
09:23It's a good team.
09:24A ground level, tucked back behind the dunes, three luxurious bedrooms, all with a view.
09:34This is the main bedroom.
09:35Right.
09:36For the house.
09:37And you get to feel how it's quite different to the space above.
09:42It's more private here, yet still light, bright and comfortable.
09:49Not a bad bathroom.
09:50Not a bad place for a bath.
09:52Lie in the bath, be part of the water.
09:54Yeah.
09:55It's your own little pool.
09:56And then if you need some privacy, there's a little bifold screen that covers it.
10:00It's got everything.
10:05It's got everything that you could ever wish for from a beach house.
10:08It's so connected to the beach.
10:11This is the stuff dreams are made of.
10:13Yes.
10:14Well, mine are, anyway.
10:16To come out of your bedroom.
10:19Well, and you know, the lovely thing where you are.
10:22No one can see where you are.
10:23No, it's private here.
10:24Yeah.
10:25So good.
10:27Goodness gracious me.
10:30Love it.
10:43I'm in the Coromandel.
10:47Halfway round my tour of the ultimate beach house with architect Paul Clarke.
10:53I think even I'm going to have to have a wee swim today.
10:55I don't normally, but why not?
11:02Walking around, you can't help notice.
11:04Yes, of course, that view, but also the precision of the interior detailing.
11:09Stunning craftsmanship the whole way, and there was an awful lot of timber, which apparently the owners weren't enamoured with the idea to start with, but it really works.
11:22Again, simple, clean lines lead you down to two guest bedrooms and bathroom.
11:35The ceiling's dropped at the back of the house here.
11:41You've still got the beautiful views.
11:45Sliding slatted screens can be used to entirely enclose the upper level, hardy materials to withstand the coastal environment rather than conventional shutters or blinds, controlling the sun and privacy while still letting in the sea breeze and, of course, that view.
12:05You know, people say that houses give them a feeling.
12:09They're looking for a feeling in the household.
12:11This gives me the feeling.
12:13I'm in love.
12:14I am in love.
12:15I admit it.
12:16Might be a teenager of me, but I'm in love.
12:21It's very fluid.
12:22The flow is quite remarkable.
12:25We went into the bedrooms down the corridor.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Actually, if I was in that bedroom and wanted to get here, the chances are you would cross it outdoors.
12:34Absolutely.
12:35Sort of that informal way of connection between space, having this ability to open a door but not necessarily need to use a passageway.
12:44It's so informal.
12:46Yeah.
12:47It's just like camping.
12:49No, Paul, it's not like camping.
12:52It's definitely not camping.
12:53Sites like this are extremely rare and highly desired.
13:02Once secured, the owners were faced with the challenge of designing a home deserving of the best spot on the beach.
13:14Enter Paul Clarke and a clever design that took everything into consideration to enjoy that view.
13:24This is the life, isn't it?
13:27It's not there.
13:28Lazy days by the sea.
13:30It's absolutely amazing.
13:32Do you have a favourite bit, favourite moment?
13:35Look, it's a really special house in the sense that it's got a number of favourite moments.
13:40And I mean, I think that's what's so successful about it.
13:43And that's what I think is really successful about good architecture.
13:46Good architecture, but to sit here, this would have to be one of them.
13:51Yeah.
13:53You're feeling pretty good about life up here.
13:56Absolutely.
13:57You can watch the whole world go by and it's forever changing.
14:00It's beautiful.
14:06Well, congratulations.
14:07You've nailed it.
14:09Again.
14:10Thank you so much.
14:20Yeah.
14:21What's wrong?
14:22Leaving the white sand and blue water of Har Hei Beach behind me,
14:33I'm now in the South Island,
14:34in one of my favourite mountain resort destinations, Queenstown.
14:42Which features some of the world's most picture-perfect views.
14:47And I'm going to be meeting a friend of mine, Anna Marie,
14:54she's a local architect, and I've seen several of her designs in the past,
14:57so I know I'm in for a treat.
15:12Tucked somewhere down this private lane
15:15is the house.
15:21I don't see it yet.
15:25Look at this, look at this.
15:28Wow.
15:33My heart's starting to pump.
15:36This is ridiculous.
15:40Terrace Edge.
15:46Taking its inspiration from the barns which dot the surrounding hillsides.
15:52Five bedrooms, six fireplaces, three living rooms, a big house built for a big view.
15:59The architect behind this home is Anna Marie Chin.
16:07Anna Marie.
16:08Hi, how are you?
16:09Very well.
16:10I'm going to give you a hug.
16:11Nice to see you.
16:12Lovely to see you.
16:13Welcome back.
16:14What have you got for me?
16:15Goodness me.
16:16This is, I'm really excited to show you this house.
16:19Right.
16:20So I'd like to take you through.
16:23This is an amazing door.
16:24It's huge, as you obviously can see.
16:27It's absolutely vast.
16:29I can't imagine coming back from shopping and pushing that open.
16:33It took about ten guys to lift it.
16:35And it's made of New Zealand recycled timber.
16:38It's gorgeous.
16:39It's beautiful isn't it?
16:40Would it be the heaviest door in New Zealand?
16:42It's mostly the heaviest one that we've made.
16:45Come on through.
16:46Right, come on then.
16:47This is the house.
16:53So what have we got going on?
16:56It's quite a big house.
16:59We wanted it to feel like more intimate by creating little spaces.
17:05Isn't this beautiful?
17:09Look at that view.
17:10This is like a photograph.
17:12I know.
17:13We wanted to frame that view.
17:14This is the media room.
17:16So we didn't want it to be all glass.
17:21It's absolutely beautiful.
17:23It's probably the best view I've seen.
17:26Oh, it's stunning.
17:27And they love that view.
17:28What a spot.
17:29The Remarkables mountain range, Lake Hayes.
17:32Ibron's right there, where you were just this morning.
17:35The house sits proudly on this elevated terrace,
17:38cleverly positioned slightly to the rear of the site,
17:41so that the lake and mountains feel closer than they actually are.
17:47I love the timber floors.
17:50I love the feature lighting.
17:52The contrast against the steel and concrete adds warmth and a bit of drama.
17:59Every millimetre in there has been well crafted.
18:04To celebrate that boom, that is an amazing view.
18:09And it's a view that you would never tire of.
18:17And what was your brief from the client?
18:21It was quite simple.
18:22Capture the view.
18:24Because we've got the views to the south and then the sun comes in from the north.
18:28So it was us trying to work out how to create spaces that allowed them to see the view,
18:33but also experience the sun and the heat and utilise that too.
18:38This has been achieved in a variety of ways.
18:42A number of north-facing courtyards off the guest rooms.
18:46A large central courtyard off the main living spaces.
18:51And a giant sunroom sitting to the north.
18:55Soaked in all-day sun no matter what the season.
18:58A double-height ceiling made of double-glazed glass.
19:02An absolute sun trap.
19:04It's a heat-controlled glass and sun.
19:07So it reduces some of the glare that you get.
19:10But it also helps control some of the overheating that you can get in these spaces.
19:14What's the kind of stuff?
19:15But that's not all.
19:23Off to the side, a multi-functional space.
19:27The outdoor room.
19:29The outdoor indoor room.
19:31Which I reckon they use an awful lot.
19:34Because you can close the roof down, the roof is waterproof, it's snowproof.
19:38Close the windows, close the doors, satin lights, comfy chairs, lighting the fire.
19:43But then in the summer, open everything up.
19:47Fully outdoors.
19:51It's very special.
19:52It is special.
19:54A special house for a very special view.
19:59And I've only just scratched the surface.
20:13That is a decent view.
20:18I'm with architect Anna Marie Chin, exploring an incredible alpine home.
20:23You should come back in winter.
20:25But the mountains would take on a totally different feel.
20:27Oh, and it's spectacular, like looking at remarks with the winter with the snow and then the light goes down and it goes pink.
20:37Inside and out, a variety of different materials.
20:41Beautiful stone, fireplace, massive fireplace.
20:44All complementing this beautiful setting.
20:49So you have got lots of sort of natural materials.
20:53The concrete, the stone, steel.
20:56The steel. Yeah.
20:58And we loved it.
20:59And then you've got the same material on the roof as inside as well.
21:02Yeah.
21:03They look the same.
21:04We did that on purpose because we wanted these little gable buildings to feel like individual buildings and then we joined them together using this glazed link.
21:12Yeah.
21:13And this glazed link keeps it open and connected and like an indoor space.
21:22This is a really good example here of the difference in materials that we've used.
21:28There's no gutters.
21:29I know. So we, it's that simplicity that we wanted to create, but it actually has a practical application.
21:35Because the snow just falls off in the winter and you don't get any issues with gutters falling off and it just falls into the ground.
21:41And the pebble.
21:42So is your drainage in the pebbles?
21:44Yeah, it's hidden underneath the pebbles.
21:46But it's a really beautiful way of keeping the mowing strip away from it.
21:49Yes.
21:54This is a great moment.
21:56I'm learning architect speak here.
21:58This is a moment to celebrate how the interior matches the exterior.
22:04And here, interior matches the exterior.
22:09Simplicity in design.
22:11However, I'm guessing maybe not so straightforward for builder Paul Rogers.
22:16Paul, you've had a job on building this, haven't you?
22:19Goodness me.
22:20It was a big gig, yeah. It was a big gig for all the, all the guys involved actually, because Anna Marie's an artist essentially, I think.
22:26And then everybody's got to get together and say, how do we put this actually into reality? How do we make it something?
22:31It's incredibly intricate as I've wandered around and it is all absolutely spot on.
22:36And you are using an awful lot of different materials that do different things, behave in different ways.
22:40Yeah.
22:41And we built every single door on site.
22:44Because you would have seen the VM zinc layers on the doors, they line up with the VM zinc on the roof, so everything's perfect, so you're bringing those layers together.
22:52The mind boggles what you've had to deal with.
22:57But it shows, because you pulled off something that's quite extraordinary.
23:00It's beautiful.
23:01On the subject of doors, tell me about that front door. It's the biggest, heaviest thing I've ever seen.
23:08Yeah, it's like 450 kg or something.
23:10Fitting you can get.
23:11450 kg door.
23:12It's the first time we used a fit studio.
23:14Anna Marie, you've got to get a grip.
23:16You can't keep doing this.
23:18Oh, well, everyone loves it. Good talking for us.
23:20Yeah, it's great.
23:22While we're talking about doors, the one to the main bedroom is hidden to allow for complete privacy and a bit of playfulness.
23:29So this, this is the door to the master bedroom.
23:34Concealed.
23:36Main bedroom.
23:38Volume, height.
23:41Generosity, view.
23:43It's got it all going on.
23:46And I like this.
23:48So this is a his and hers bathroom.
23:51So they've got two loos, but they can share the shower.
23:55Come and have a look.
23:56So people, nice, nice, nice to have your own loo and your own sink and your own bits of box.
24:03Also, nice to have a sort of communal shower.
24:07Anna Marie loves to play with space.
24:11An internal box to house the bathroom and wardrobe allow them to feel intimate.
24:17Without compromising the large gabled roof of the surrounding pavilion.
24:22A manipulation of space is used cleverly throughout the home.
24:27You know, this is a long corridor and to shrink the length corridor, we angled this wall, ever so gently.
24:35Oh yeah.
24:36And what it does is when you walk through here, it funnels you in and then it opens you up to this view.
24:42Do you see what you mean?
24:43Subtle things.
24:44So it funnels you in here and then you go, woo!
24:47Yeah.
24:48It's a subtle feeling, but you don't notice it.
24:51But you just get this sense of getting slightly squashed and opening up.
24:55This is what I call the guest pavilion.
24:58So you have friends that want to come and stay and they wanted to give them their own space.
25:03Okay.
25:04So this is a guest lounge suite.
25:06Yeah.
25:07And so now you can get the sun coming in on the north in a little private courtyard.
25:11Yeah.
25:13But then they can also look south to the view.
25:17And if they want to actually close it down, they can use that big sliding door.
25:20Three large bedrooms, one with a bunk mezzanine, all with their own large en suite.
25:30This feels luxuriously generous.
25:34I've seen quite a lot of sort of guest wings on my tour of New Zealand.
25:39But there's been more care and attention put into this one.
25:42It's like a guest house.
25:43It is, actually.
25:44I hadn't thought of it like that.
25:46I mean, from a design point of view, you've got a lot of beds in a...
25:49fairly small space.
25:51Yeah.
25:52To sleep ten.
25:53Comfortably.
25:54Yeah, and it works really well.
25:55I bet they have a lot of fun.
25:56Oh, imagine being a kid and climbing up those stairs.
25:58Imagine being a guest here.
26:00That'll do me.
26:02I know, I'd love to have a house like this as well.
26:08Come on through.
26:09So what happens now?
26:10So this is another pavilion, like my pavilions.
26:12Yeah.
26:13Not a very cool door.
26:14I know.
26:15The good old Rimu.
26:16This is beautiful, isn't it?
26:17Yeah, it's dying.
26:18But we always touch it.
26:19I know.
26:20I totally want to touch it.
26:21And I love the imperfections in the old Tova.
26:24It's stunning.
26:25Yeah.
26:26So this is for their son.
26:29This is his own suite.
26:33So this is a kitchen.
26:34Oh, and there's an outdoor area as well.
26:37Yeah.
26:38So again, their son has a totally...
26:39Independent.
26:40Yeah.
26:41Yeah.
26:42But that's why the pavilions work really well,
26:43because they're little buildings that people can occupy
26:45and feel like it's their own space.
26:47But they can also feel connected because they could see across
26:49should they wish to do so.
26:51Yeah, exactly.
26:52It's been intricate, it's been meticulous in its planning, in the design, in the building,
27:06the craftsmanship that's gone into it.
27:08There's a real lot of skill here.
27:11A lot of people working together very well indeed.
27:14Anora, do you have a favourite part of the house?
27:21Oh, now that's a hard question.
27:23You must have lived this for such a long time.
27:26Yeah.
27:27A project like this takes years.
27:28Yeah.
27:29They're my favourite space.
27:30I love the connection through the media room.
27:34From the courtyard with the view and how you can shut it down or open it up.
27:38Yeah.
27:40But I love sitting here too.
27:41I guess it's different times of day and different times of year,
27:45you'd use the house in different ways.
27:47It's lovely.
27:48Well you've got a house that can take the summer sun at height
27:51and enjoy the winter sun that's low,
27:53because it brings all that light through that southern side.
27:56It's such a good view this.
27:57There's not many houses get this view of lake houses.
27:59Really?
28:00Not this way.
28:03This is pretty unique here.
28:04There's nothing really long here with absolute straight down the lake.
28:08Annemarie is, she's a visionary, she's an artist as well as being a phenomenal architect.
28:20Her use of materials, her layered designs, her ability to create intimate spaces in these gigantic homes.
28:30I absolutely love it.
28:35It's very simple in its design, in that the key rooms, the living room, the outdoor room,
28:42the media room, the main bedroom and the sun's bedroom all address this outstanding view.
28:50Just pull it off.
29:00If lake views are your thing, you're spoilt for choice around here.
29:12Travel an hour or so north of Queenstown, and you're at Warnaca.
29:18A charming alpine lakefront village, cradled by the mountains surrounding it.
29:24In winter, the town buzzes with skiers and snowboarders carving up the nearby slopes.
29:31And summer is just as lively.
29:33Picnickers lounge by the lake, while boaties make the most of the crystal clear waters,
29:39all soaking in the stunning mountain views.
29:42And it's that view, I'm told, that inspired the incredible home I'm off to see today.
29:47Ironically, not much of a view en route.
29:54I'm coming over the Crown Range.
29:57It's the highest main road in New Zealand, and the views would be spectacular,
30:01but today I'm completely in the cloud.
30:08However, it is the quickest way to get from Queenstown to Warnaca,
30:12and that's where I'm headed.
30:23The clouds have lifted, and I've arrived at Lake Warnaca.
30:30I'm about to visit a home designed and built to make the most of its one-of-a-kind alpine views.
30:37Andrew.
30:39Hi, Phil. Nice to see you again.
30:40Good to see you.
30:42That's quite a drive.
30:43It's a great drive, though, isn't it?
30:44It's a stunning drive.
30:45Yeah, yeah.
30:46Well, this isn't giving much away.
30:48No, no, it's a very, it's a very private house from this side.
30:51Right, well, what have you got for me?
30:52Come in.
30:53Black Peak Mount Burke, the ultimate lakeside home.
31:03Designed to frame three surrounding mountain peaks, this place has it all.
31:12This is a magical property, and the magician behind it is one of my favourites,
31:18architect Andrew Patterson.
31:19So what have we got?
31:24Well, this is a lakeside house set around a courtyard.
31:29Through the large wooden doors, you are immediately transported into another world.
31:35A dreamlike setting.
31:37Beautiful courtyard.
31:38Yeah, the courtyard has a...
31:40They're keen gardeners.
31:41It's a beautiful garden.
31:43There's a lot of love going on in this garden.
31:45Yeah.
31:48It's really two buildings.
31:49One for family and children, and the other for parents.
31:53Okay.
31:54Well, a lot of love on the house as well.
31:57The home is clad in dark timber.
32:00Rock walls and terraces are made of stone from local quarries.
32:03This is a burnt larch house.
32:06It's a Japanese tradition.
32:07It was all burnt on site in a little shed by one of the building apprentices.
32:13Passing it through.
32:15Yeah.
32:16Very dark in there.
32:17And you can see that with the handcraft, there's every kind of texture burnt.
32:22Yeah.
32:23You can char them, or you can...
32:25Or they just have a light burn, but you never need to paint after you've done this process.
32:29And that will keep it...
32:30It'll protect it.
32:31It just keeps it, yeah.
32:32It's a natural way of preserving timber.
32:34Because you don't do too much burning.
32:36Yes.
32:38Come and have a look at the lake frontage.
32:43It's very dark and atmospheric.
32:46Moving through the house, it feels moody and intimate.
32:50A variety of muted colours and textures on the walls and in the soft furnishings make the home feel comfy and snug.
32:58The fire's setting it off nicely.
33:00It's beautiful.
33:01Yeah, it's beautiful.
33:02Well, especially on a day like today where you've got the cloud over the mountains.
33:09The family who this house is for used to camp here.
33:1230, 40 years ago and they camped here for years and years.
33:19The design for the house was inspired by the owner's love of this land.
33:24They wanted a permanent home to celebrate the wonderful memories made here.
33:29You'll see that this is the mount-aspiring Circlet.
33:36There's three mountains that the house is designed by.
33:39Mount Burke is over on this side.
33:40Black Peak is right in the middle.
33:44And there's Tribble Cone.
33:47You can see what looks like a rectangular house is actually skewed.
33:53So all of those mountains line up in your everyday life.
33:57I love that they had camped on the site and used the site for a really long time before building the house.
34:10They did express the deep love and history.
34:14And I think that's where the mountains came from as well.
34:17Because camping in the mountains with these peaks above you is a special and dramatic experience that you look forward to every summer.
34:26They were able to give me an appreciation of the landscape that I might not have had.
34:31You really do get a strong sense of being in a tent, which of course is what they were after.
34:39And it's because of the angle, the colour, the material, beautiful fire around the camp, fire at night.
34:51This rock coming out of the ground that's so kind of earthy.
34:56French oak ceilings, cabinetry and floors, charred lots, feature walls.
35:03Every detail has been carefully considered.
35:08This is like the camp kitchen.
35:12Yeah, well it's central.
35:14And from Black Peak, the view axis from Black Peak comes right through here and into the cooking fire.
35:21So you can enjoy the view of Black Peak right the way through this and the kitchen itself, of course.
35:27It's absolutely stunning.
35:29About where the courtyard is now was a massive stone which was used as the hearth in the middle of the campsite.
35:33Yeah.
35:34And you'll see the stone is now in four or five pieces to form these big steps.
35:38That's beautiful.
35:39Yeah.
35:40What a project.
35:41What a house.
35:42Off the kitchen, neatly hidden away, the main bedroom.
35:46The master bedroom almost looks like it's got a huge camp tent fly open to the sky.
35:54And this looks at Black Peak as well.
35:58It's like a camp bed.
36:00The bedroom is light and airy.
36:03A huge steel frame window, high enough not to interrupt that view of the peaks.
36:09Wow.
36:10Wow.
36:11An oversized window seat, inviting you to linger a while and take it all in.
36:16A camp chair and tables, just a gentle nod to the site and its history.
36:21An old school architect will say you should always go and camp on the site before you build the building.
36:26Yeah.
36:27And I think that's really wise advice.
36:36And the interior is a stuff.
36:38It's a bit better than camping because you've got these nice warm radiators.
36:41It's all very muted tones.
36:55You can see it's canvassy, old style canvassy colours.
36:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:59We call us the snorers, right?
37:05OK, why?
37:06Because, well, it's at the other end of the house, so...
37:08It was Surya Fullerton who was brought in by Andrew as project lead.
37:28He was tasked with working closely with the clients to understand their brief.
37:33When you first came, did it kind of make sense what they wanted to do?
37:36It kind of got revealed over multiple conversations and meetings, really.
37:41And some food and some wine.
37:43Here?
37:44Yeah.
37:45In the campsite.
37:47I imagine they had a lot of input because they spent so much time in the site.
37:51They were so connected to the site.
37:53Yeah, family connection as well as the land and the place.
37:59The whole place has a very natural feel to it, which is what you were after.
38:02This is a relaxed house.
38:04This is using the materials of the land and the site and everything here is hand worked.
38:11The timber is hand charred and the rock is split and hewn.
38:15That's such a beautiful story.
38:16And so that was bringing in the honesty, the materials, not trying to be too tricky with anything.
38:27This is my favourite room here actually.
38:30This is a garden room, everybody needs one of these, don't you think?
38:33But it's a really good place to pick flowers and arrange flowers.
38:39Yeah, yeah.
38:41Little birds and that's what they say.
38:43Yeah, yeah.
38:45You're selling the dream.
38:46No glass.
38:47You are selling the dream.
38:48It's kind of a tradition of camping, isn't it?
38:52To have somewhere late at night where the stragglers sit around and maybe share a whiskey.
38:57Maybe.
38:58Would they have a lot of guests and grandchildren and what have you?
39:02Yes, well especially during the summer months.
39:06This part of the house is for guests.
39:08Okay.
39:10Lucky them.
39:13And it has a different view and of course it looks at a different mountain.
39:16Yeah.
39:17Yeah.
39:18And of course the pool and the garden.
39:20They can be self-sufficient in here.
39:24Yeah.
39:25Which is really nice.
39:26So you're not sort of living in each other's pockets.
39:28Which was one of the great advantages of having a multi-generational holiday.
39:34You've got to be able to have your own spaces.
39:38The only problem is your guests might never leave.
39:50I'm exploring Black Peak Mount Burke with Andrew Patterson.
39:57This has been heavily thought out.
40:00Yes.
40:01It's a really beautiful garden.
40:02Goodness it is.
40:04A lakeside home positioned to maximize the views of the mountains.
40:11And from here the whole place works.
40:15Big chimneys and open food to the kitchen.
40:17The trees that they've put in and the whole garden.
40:21Goodness me the garden is incredible.
40:24It's so intricate.
40:28Wonderful story of the rocks.
40:31That the family used to have as their hearth when they were camping.
40:34Now being broken up and used as steps through the house.
40:37I just think that's so special.
40:47That is gorgeous.
41:04The basic garden was laid out by the landscape architects.
41:08And the two marry up.
41:10It's a whole team of people that you need to create a house like this.
41:17That is absolutely gorgeous.
41:19And not the way it sits up.
41:21Well if you raise the water level a bit you get much more reflection.
41:24Because the angle of reflection enables the pool to shimmer.
41:28I've never seen another pool like it.
41:29That's absolutely stunning.
41:47And the house looks great from here too.
41:49The whole thing looks great Andrew from start to finish.
41:52And those are oak trees.
41:53Did you design it around the trees?
41:55No the oak trees were put in brand new.
41:58Brand new?
41:59Yeah.
42:01They were planted at that size.
42:02OK.
42:03OK.
42:05It just goes on.
42:08The beauty of this whole site just goes on.
42:12I mean the veg patch.
42:13The walled veg patch.
42:15And it's apparently walled to protect it from rabbits.
42:18It's a lovely, lovely garden.
42:23See the sweetcorns just to eat.
42:26Wow.
42:27It makes me hungry just being in here.
42:28Cabbages.
42:29Yeah.
42:30Well it's not so much my area.
42:32But I really appreciate a good vegetable garden.
42:35Don't you?
42:36Yeah, 100%.
42:38The house, the garden, so established.
42:41It's hard to picture what it must have been like 40 odd years ago
42:44when the family first bought the site.
42:46But there are a few nods to the past.
42:49The cabin, or batch as they call them here,
42:52that the family first built.
42:56An original batch?
42:57Yeah, this is the original batch.
42:59This is a true batch.
43:00It's on skids so you can move it anywhere.
43:06Still got a bed in it.
43:07Yeah.
43:08Yes.
43:09No, I think it's still used.
43:10That's as true a batch as you're going to find.
43:13It's a piece of history.
43:14Yeah.
43:15It's nice to keep it.
43:16If you're the black sheep of the family, I think you're going to be here.
43:18You're right now.
43:19Yeah, yeah.
43:25I know you've set the house to enjoy the views of the different mountains,
43:29but actually you get different views of the house.
43:32As you wander around the garden.
43:33As you wander around it.
43:34Yeah.
43:35Coming back now must be pretty special for you as it's grown into its site.
43:42Well, it's really lovely to see it bedding itself into the landscape.
43:46Yeah.
43:47And the materials that we specified were designed to age well,
43:51and it's really, really heartening to see that happening.
43:54And to know that the owners are loving it so much.
43:57They're spending more and more time developing the garden more and more.
44:01Yeah, the garden keeps doing this.
44:03Yeah.
44:07It's a beautiful story.
44:08I mean, it's a beautiful house.
44:09It's a beautiful place.
44:10But it's also a really beautiful story.
44:12It's an emotional story.
44:13Yeah, I agree.
44:14You know, it's in a quiet way.
44:16The sense of place and belonging that you get is about those great nights spent with people, isn't it?
44:23I'm not sure I've ever come across anything like it.
44:25The sense of belonging the owners have here.
44:28And will continue to have.
44:30Now you've built them a proper campsite.
44:32Well, you need some history with the place, don't you?
44:37Plenty going on.
44:44What a beautiful home.
44:51What a beautiful story.
44:53The whole idea of spending summers camping here with a family,
44:58and then one day being able to build a home like that and live here permanently.
45:03It's just stunning.
45:04The whole thing is just stunning.
45:06I mean, camping, it's all well and good.
45:08But with a home like that, you'd never want to leave.
45:12Mind you, with a garden like this, you probably never could.
45:22Har Hay, the beach house to end all beach houses.
45:29Terrace edge, an incredible home with a priceless vista.
45:37Black Peak, Mount Burke, cleverly placed to frame those mountains.
45:42All homes designed with the challenge of capturing a breathtaking view.
45:55And if you ask me, they have absolutely nailed it.
45:59Burying cloud design.
46:00At the valley of the valley of the valley of the lake.
46:05Can allein in places where the water is pris humor,
46:06will have to place out under the valley of the valley?
46:08How many plants Jetzt.
46:10To rent.
46:11What's going on?
46:13To 30 better.
46:14Padigan's horse cap重要.
