00:00people know that when the green uniform comes along you're going to help them it's absolutely
00:07my superhero costume do we have a pulse oh you are being an absolute trooper as soon as we arrive
00:15they just know they're in safe hands and that we're going to do everything we can to help them
00:18oh the poor little one i wouldn't have guessed you were 104 i genuinely believe laughter is
00:26the best medicine i feel weird you're the dream team tonight to know that you bring someone that's
00:33very unwell to hospital and they get better it's one of the best feelings in the world you're the
00:38toughest man i've ever met second to god these people that's it no you're doing so good let's
00:46get you in the ambulance hey i feel really proud to wear this uniform and i feel really proud to be a
00:51paramedic on this episode of paramedics bill races to a woman who's been brought back from the dead
01:07after going into cardiac arrest that rate has dropped our biggest fear is that her body does
01:12start to shut down again i don't think we can actually clear her neck a nasty fall at church
01:21could have life-changing consequences worst case scenario for jennifer is that she's fractured her
01:27spine my head oh we just got to get out of here and laura's driving skills full throttle full tilt
01:34are put to the test momentum is your friend after rescuing an injured mountain biker
01:53sa ambulance tell me exactly what's happened we've got a lady here i don't know her she just pulled up
01:59in the car and she's collapsed she said she was short of breast she's hit her head she's bleeding on
02:04the road and what's your name michael how old is she uh i'm guessing about 50. is her breathing normal
02:11no no she's struggling to breathe at the south australian emergency operation center a panicked
02:18man is on the line desperate to help an unconscious woman outside his house i need you to try and turn her
02:25over onto her back if you can okay or at least into the recovery position okay all right i'll try and
02:31turn her over now um okay now we're going to try and move into the recovery position okay things a bit
02:36better okay oh what's happening michael this is not um doesn't work she's breathing
02:49it doesn't get any more serious than this for intensive care paramedic bill
02:55we're driving priority one to a confirmed cardiac arrest of a 50 year old female
03:02cardiac arrest actually means your heart has stopped to a degree it won't actually be pumping
03:06out any blood throughout your body every minute that you are in cardiac arrest without any intervention
03:11being performed you lose about 10 of your brain and potentially your heart muscle as well
03:17i'm driving to this patient who's in active cardiac arrest i'm already thinking that there's not a great
03:22chance of their survival as bill gets closer to the patient bystander michael has started what he
03:29hopes is life-saving cpr so we're going to go one two three four okay a little bit faster
03:39one two three four you need to go five centimeters deep one two three four you're doing really well we're
03:48coming very quickly
03:59it's a quiet moment between jobs and paramedics olivia and sally are watching the world go
04:20boy poor kid sorry i put him off his food why i was watching him eat and then he went all shy
04:28but the people watching is over as a new job comes in sally we're going priority three to a 75
04:38year old lady looks like she's uh fallen hit her head up in a church oh a head strike in this age
04:45patient could be quite serious sally being in your 70s as we age our brain shrinks a little bit so
04:53you've got a lot more space between the brain and the skull so hitting your head at that age puts
04:58you at a high risk for some kind of traumatic brain injury bleed on the brain anything's possible
05:06this is the church oh yeah little kids pointing
05:13hello my name's olivia hi how did you end up here i went to get a bookmark from the altar and
05:20i turned around and said i don't know i must have missed the step or something yeah then i fell and
05:28hit you oh and i think i've got on top of my head yep i think i've got on the split and my head's really
05:38sore yeah the paramedics are immediately worried about the large amount of blood coming from jennifer's
05:45head wound i'm just going to touch your neck you got any pain back here no i've got osteoarthritis in
05:51my neck you've got osteoarthritis in your neck we know that with osteoarthritis joints become much more
05:58stiff so she's at a much higher risk for having some kind of fracture this had about five falls in
06:04the past 12 months oh has she okay jennifer's husband johnny is there and the poor man looks concerned
06:11and upset he's clearly worried about his wife she's i've got cages in event in her spine rods
06:18this cage okay this cages okay yeah he tells us that she's got some spinal issues we'll have to
06:25explore that a little bit more but it's obviously really concerning him can you wiggle wiggle the toes
06:30for me given her medical history alarm bells are ringing this just isn't a simple fall and hit to
06:36the head we could have something much more sinister going on i'm worried because she's got osteoarthritis
06:43that we essentially can't clear her spine
06:54intensive care paramedic bill is racing to a patient who has suddenly collapsed in a street
07:00carolyn's heart has stopped and she is now in a potentially fatal cardiac arrest
07:14still on the line to the emergency operations center is the man who found her michael has never
07:21performed cpr until today let the chest come all the way up between palms
07:30as michael desperately searches for her pulse a neighbor has also stopped to help
07:38what's happening with her at the moment
07:43so keep doing compressions
07:44keep going until they tell you to stop
07:54the first paramedic crew are now at the scene and bill is only minutes from the life and
08:14death emergency in ambulance world we talk about something called the chain of survival and bystander
08:21cpr is one of the most important links in that chain of survival the most important minutes of
08:26those first few and the fact that carolyn has had bystander cpr is nothing short of amazing
08:33as i'm driving down the street i can see carolyn i can see about five ambos doing cpr on him bill will
08:39now lead the team as they desperately try to keep carolyn alive
08:43it seemed to be excellent in the motor vehicle yeah i was really well that's yep
08:49meanwhile a badly shaken michael
08:52is still reliving the ordeal she's pulled up at the same time i was pulling up in front of my
08:58property um she had the window down and signaled out to me she said she wasn't well so my son and i
09:05went inside to get some water for her came back out by which stage she'd collapsed and hit her head on
09:11the ground and her lips were turning blue and her ears were turning blue so i rang triple zero and
09:17they talked me through impressions right now it feels surreal that you know i had to do it but
09:25um at the end of the day it's you just got to get in and help i guess we've given some amiodarone
09:31adrenaline cool we basically have not lost three shots okay and we've got ross at the moment so i've got
09:37rosk fantastic i find out that she's had three shocks from our monitor so that's three defibrillations
09:45we were able to gain rosk which is return of spontaneous circulation basically meaning that
09:50her heart has been able to be restarted do you want this on still need the intro aid will you
09:54because we're not ventilating well okay we still don't know why she's actually gone into cardiac
09:58arrest in the first place whether it be a heart attack given her age so not knowing this information
10:03is quite concerning but keeping her alive and not letting her go back into cardiac arrest is our
10:08most important job at the moment can someone set up to do that to avoid another near-death episode
10:17the team need to take over carolyn's breathing an intubation is one of the most dangerous procedures
10:24paramedics can do we get a suction kit suction an intubation is a very high risk skill if you can imagine
10:32you're in a hospital with say an anaesthetist they're they're on a bed which can be put in the
10:37right height on the right angle with the right lighting before this skill happens suction if you
10:43need it so to perform an intubation in the middle of the road for someone who's just come out of
10:49cardiac arrest and is a high risk is something that takes a lot of courage to do but we know this
10:55patient needs it to be able to save their life so on ben's count
11:05because she's got the osteoarthritis and she's older i don't think we can actually clear her neck
11:1175 year old jennifer has had a potentially life-changing fall at church in front of her loving abby johnny
11:18worst case scenario for jennifer is that she's fractured her spine and if that could affect her for
11:26the rest of her life johnny would be devastated i could feel the split what does it look like at the
11:33top south it's around there somewhere oh yeah i can see it there just there there we go yeah you might
11:42need a few staples in that because you've got osteoarthritis yes it kind of elevates your risk
11:49for like a bony injury to your neck yes so what we're gonna do is get you onto a board yes and then
11:56get you onto the bed that way okay i was worried that my skirt was falling down oh no you are completely
12:05covered up incredibly modest and i will keep it that way okay thank you no worries poor jennifer's
12:11worried that her skirt's up and i'd be worried too if i took a tumble that i wasn't flashing anyone
12:16especially at church with such a tricky extrication a second crew has arrived to assist we're ready yes
12:25i'm ready as jennifer's worried hubby johnny watches on on three one two three
12:32oh i've got it it's really important that we move jennifer slowly on the count of three we're all
12:44going to lift up when you see us up you just push the bed straight underneath we take our time one two
12:50three because any sort of sudden movement could make things a whole lot worse for her my head oh
13:03sa ambulance tell me exactly what's happened we were mounted barking and i flipped over
13:09hit my head and sent a shock down my spine okay i'm in a lot of pain back at the emergency operation
13:16center a call's come in from a young man in trouble i definitely have my back okay i'm having
13:22like spazzle kind of thing all right i'm organizing help for you now don't move around unless it's
13:27absolutely necessary already on the road paramedics laura and aaron head to the unlucky rider he's
13:39mountain biking went over a two meter drop and hit his head nose back oh okay two meters it's a
13:47pretty reasonable job might have been going pretty quick if he was mountain biking as well exactly
13:53when we hear about this guy that's fallen two meters off an embankment the obvious biggest concern
13:57for me is a head injury and a spinal injury but we also need to think does he have a fractured pelvis
14:03or any fractured legs can he walk can he move one of my friends actually just died a couple months ago
14:14from a mountain bike accident oh my god that's awful yeah it was in the news he landed went over the
14:20handlebars in the air landed on his head snapped his spinal cord extreme sports have the word extreme in
14:27front of him i guess for a reason and when events like that happen you get slapped in the face pretty
14:34hard and reminded quickly that it is a split-second decision that can change someone's life
14:43i find it really hard with parks because all the different entrances with their patient unable to move
14:49every second counts i'll go on google maps keep going straight up here i am feeling stressed when
14:58we get dispatched to a national park it's one of the first things we think about turn left getting in
15:03and getting out and actually finding the patient straight yeah yeah yeah straight straight we don't
15:09really know where we're going into so all i'm thinking is we're not going fast enough
15:14i'm feeling a little bit of pressure and yeah we're racing against the clock
15:28have you got midaz sorted not yet intensive care paramedic bill and the team are intubating carolyn
15:35after she collapsed on the road and needed life-saving cpr all right so we just got some gagging on the
15:41tubes so we'll go midaz we'll grab some fenton for you as well the invasive procedure allows the
15:46paramedics to take over carolyn's breathing in a bid to stop her going back into cardiac arrest
15:53all right so adrenaline fusion what's her pressure do we know okay do you need that sedation yeah
15:58yeah that sounds like it's already yeah carolyn's been intubated successfully which is fantastic
16:13we have stabilized her as best as we can let's go through top to bottom make sure that we're set
16:17before we move so airways sorted breathing you've listened everything's happy yep getting a positive
16:21end title lovely have we listened to the chest auscretation we had course that's clear have we
16:26done a 12 lead you've done a 12 lead ecg have we got changes you do have some significant we do
16:33depressions we might have a posterior the ecg is showing warning signs that carolyn is now having
16:41another heart attack the pressure is mounting when we move her she will start to get agitated again
16:49and we've still got four of midaz one two three roll our biggest fear for carolyn is that her body
16:56does start to shut down again and her heart does give up and goes back into cardiac arrest
17:00five to three one two three lift and even though we are only 10 minutes drive from hospital on a
17:07lights as iron's drive this patient's still got a really long way to go until we get there that rate
17:12has dropped sa ambulance so tell me exactly what's happened oh the lady next door i'm in her place now
17:25she come out of the hospital a couple of days ago pneumonia she's really sick okay and she's having
17:32trouble bruising now at the emergency operations center a very worried neighbor is on the line
17:40we're gonna have help come very quickly okay oh just breathe slowly
17:50intensive care paramedic dan is now on his way to the critically ill 89 year old apparently she's
17:58short of breath to the point that she's gasping for air to barely talk so people seem that her
18:05pneumonia has worsened and uh at bray she probably doesn't have a lot left in the tank to fight it
18:12with that recent pneumonia i'm concerned that she's got an acute lack of oxygen to all her vital organs
18:19including her brain to truly be gasping for your last breath must be absolutely frightening
18:26sort of see their eyes they're obviously very grateful for when you arrive and help them out
18:34let's have a look at you when did this start paramedic ben and intern audrey have arrived just
18:42ahead of dan and are urgently assessing helen to work out what's causing her breathing difficulties
18:48okay she looks as sick as a person can look you can feel her heart is going like a drum before i even
18:57take a blood pressure or a pulse i already know that i need an intensive care paramedic hello guys
19:04this is helen with no sign of a lung infection and helen complaining of chest pain
19:11the team are worried the grandmother could have a heart problem there you go that'll probably explain
19:17hey can we record af is it that'll probably affect her bp and chest pain helen's heart is in the
19:25dangerous rhythm atrial fibrillation also known as af i know you're in pain helen's heart rate
19:34is pushing right up in the high 100s which means that her heart is working harder
19:43but less efficiently i only know you can have a lay down on your side that's it have a lay down there
19:51that's it when the heart fails the body will fail you're all right my love we're going to look
19:57up here all right oh god am i going to follow him down there yeah we'll work this out paramedics laura
20:16and aaron are searching the bushland for their injured patient maybe just stay here because there
20:23doesn't look like much room there the 20 year old man was riding with friends when he crashed down
20:29an embankment hitting his head are we going to be able to get back up yeah you'll get out all right
20:35don't drive us the track goes around the corner all right we're in a two and a half tonne ambulance
20:40it's getting steeper and we can't just go down we have to get back up and out oh yeah easy
20:53my name's laura oh hudson hello mate how are you good oh yeah oh probably a bit better than you
21:02when we arrive i see our patient lying in the middle of one of the fire roads and first of all
21:07he's not down in embankment so that thought's gone through my mind so how'd you get here i walked
21:13thinking back on it i was full of adrenaline and it was kind of stupid but i thought if i could just get
21:18the fenced car he drove us here i could just get home or go to the hospital or something like that
21:22take some regular breaths in and out for me i might start taking some of your
21:27vitals yeah it's good you got your protective stuff on yeah i knew i was going to crash and
21:35you have cracked your entire helmet you have hit that hard when we go to a mount by accident the
21:41first thing we look at is the safety gear and i see hudson's helmet and it's completely cracked
21:46through it's split open if you didn't have this on you would have been a whole different man
21:51that probably served my life he did you've got no significant pain in your legs or anything like
21:57that no it's my back yeah when hudson tells me he's got a lot of pain in his back i'm worried
22:02about spinal fractures or any spinal injury can you lift each arm up perfect you got good control
22:10you don't have any tingling in your legs any pins and needles nothing altered sensations
22:15anything like that cool after a thorough assessment aaron is satisfied there's no spinal injuries
22:22hudson is now cleared to be moved to the stretcher all right i think we might sit him up
22:28that will hurt but we can also give you pain relief at the same time will it make you drowsy
22:34it will it will sort of make it depend we're giving hudson pentrain or the green whistle it's a
22:40minor form of pain relief that helps take the edge off everything it's gonna relax his mind from the
22:45situation and just make his journey to the ambulance a bit more comfortable all right when you're ready
22:51we'll help you up take your time
23:04so we've had a rate drop intensive care paramedic bill is worried 61 year old carolyn is about to go
23:11back into cardiac arrest yeah i might get the arm out actually yeah it's over here oh beautiful just
23:18there you'll get enough to this side i think so basically she was driving stepped out someone's
23:24witnessed her to go into arrest the critically ill patient was found on the street and local resident
23:32michael restarted her heart with cpr the hero is still watching on as carolyn continues to fight
23:41for her life you don't expect to to see that um every day we got the lady's idea out of her car you
23:48know i don't know if it was helpful but you know at least i was talking to her by name and saying you
23:51know carolyn can you can you help out can you stay with us a little bit happy to get up a little bit
23:56here you go i'll come with you the embers have told me that we've given her the best chance of
24:03getting through the night so hopefully she'll be okay how's that right bill all right our rate is
24:11all right we've got to be great yeah let's get our blood pressure going where's that adrenaline
24:16infusion going that was sitting just there um is it there oh yeah it's got it going so ben do you just
24:22want to go through top to bottom make sure we've got everything sorted before we move yeah we're
24:26intubated 22 of the teeth we're happy i've just started the adrenaline infusion at five mics a
24:31minute because we have had a rate drop let's quickly check that post the move yeah cool yep sounds
24:37good yeah that sounds good and let's get sats on yeah in someone that's come back from the dead and
24:45is post cardiac arrest they're going to be our most unstable and unpredictable patients so changes in
24:50anything in terms of their heart rate could be vital feel dead you're good happy whenever mate
24:57keeping carolyn alive and not allowing her to go back into cardiac arrest is our most important job
25:02right now please ease down a bit yep you ready one two three and back one two three there we go
25:19paramedics sally and olivia are preparing to move 75 year old jennifer after a nasty fall at church left
25:28her with possible head and spinal injuries
25:34as jennifer's loaded into the ambulance worried hubby johnny can i just want to be as close as he can
25:42to his beloved wife just i'm shaking i couldn't drive you're a bit shaky you shouldn't drive she's
25:48okay yeah i know it looks like a lot but it's just we're just as a precaution yeah yeah we just want
25:55to make sure that we will handle her appropriately all right i'm looking at johnny and he knows that
26:03one day one of them's not going to be there for the other and in this moment he probably thinks it's
26:09jennifer he's probably thinking what am i going to do without my jenny i can't live life without her
26:17how bad is your pain in your lower back and in your hand out of ten
26:22hateful my back for jennifer i would be worried that if she had a lower back or neck fracture that
26:29she might not be able to live at home anymore and for jennifer that could be life-changing
26:34you'd better tell my husband which hospital he's sitting in the front oh johnny yeah
26:41oh darling he's up here with me oh goody we've got jenny in the back and we've got johnny up the
26:47front we don't want to deal with you jennifer i don't know darling and they're calling out to
26:52each other to make sure that each other's okay i'm pretty scared we've been married for 32 years
27:00oh really so she saved the best for last oh yeah every day's good every day too every day is a good
27:08day with her true oh that's beautiful that is so cute johnny yes god they're so in love with each
27:17other brings a little tear to my eye johnny and jen there's only one good thing about her only one
27:25good thing about her she's got osteoarthritis in her fingers and when she points in me they're beat
27:32the other way is she is telling her stories about me he definitely is oh that's all right you can give
27:43him a little behind the ears or something you can certainly tell that there's three decades of
27:52marriage right here just with their banter love that that kind of restores my faith a little bit in
27:58love i'm recently divorced 23 years i was married for with five kids and if johnny and jen can find
28:05love for a second or third time then i think there's hope for me yet how's your pain if it was an
28:12eight out of ten before oh it's twice down okay at the hospital jennifer will get a really thorough
28:22assessment just watch your step given the way jennifer fell given how many risk factors she has
28:30it would not surprise me at all to learn that jennifer's done quite a significant spinal injury
28:36shimila hello darling just pop your arms across your chest for us jen no matter what the outcome
28:43is of this fall it'll be a really tough road ahead come this way i really do hope that she recovers
28:50quickly and gets back home to johnny as soon as possible so they can keep hanging on each other
28:56you're right watch your shoulder there
29:05have a seat on there big fella paramedics aaron and laura are treating 20 year old hudson after
29:11he crashed off his mountain bike gonna be a bit bumpy all right with the young bike rider on board
29:18it's now laura in the hot seat we just gotta get out of here what would you look that way you're in
29:26the back with me and laura's laura's driving i mean we're fine i don't know about that i'm a bit
29:32nervous you good to go yeah turn around i don't know it might need some more what did i tell you yeah
29:42to get out the road is quite steep and narrow and quite rocky and slippery
29:50i feel kind of high from this it's probably helping sorry guys
29:58i think you gotta actually go pretty quick up that big hill okay just because it's pretty steep full
30:03throttle full tilt all i'm thinking and telling laura is just put your foot to the floor and get us out of
30:11here
30:19okay yeah we're good there we go you know what hudson never a doubt in my mind
30:28thankfully it was a lot easier than i envisioned
30:31have you been riding your bike long no not at all you're gonna get back on it again yeah yeah
30:41you know what though i've just remembered but i don't reckon laura can ride a bike
30:45oh am i right you're not wrong i can ride it straight i just don't really like steering
30:53i get that so what she's saying is yeah she can't ride a bike
30:56i can ride a bike i'm just not very good at it
31:03we just arrived
31:04yeah you go in i'll be back in a sec we'll get a ticket on
31:13come right a bug oh okay as we get hudson to hospital he's gonna need x-rays for all the
31:20anti-minor fractures hudson we're going in
31:22in i think at this stage the likelihood of internal bleeding is quite small
31:27but let's face it hudson can count his lucky stars he got away lightly
31:32you're paying out of 10 10 is the worst pain what would you give it
31:45hey 10 right there's definitely irregularities yeah it's gonna be af
31:49dan and ben have just discovered 89 year old helen is in atrial fibrillation a dangerously fast
31:57and irregular heart rhythm is that your neighbor outside yeah he's waiting for you outside
32:04next door neighbor joe called for an ambulance when helen phoned him gasping for breath
32:10she was bent over doubled over sitting on the edge of the bed
32:17i said helen are you and you're right she said i can't breathe properly i can't breathe properly
32:22he's well good next door no we go who's there out there looking after you i know your heart's
32:28going very very fast and they can fix that at the hospital all right let's have this are we're
32:35going to lift you up i know you don't feel good we're going to time again all right are we ready to
32:41slide our way out it's one thing for us to take blood pressures heart rates but we have to remember
32:49that when somebody's so anxious and distressed probably the best treatment we have is the way
32:55we talk to them do you reckon you can shimmy your bum just onto this little bit here ready one two
33:01three nice cuddle by british gentleman here you go all right gentleman's a stretch yeah it is
33:07it is make it till you make it i say well played all right we'll get you up and about
33:13is that okay sitting like that yeah it's not too hard on your breathing helen urgently needs treatment
33:22to stabilize her heart rate little bump love i can see how scared helen looks and i just want to let
33:28her know it's going to be okay but deep down she knows she's unwell i know she's unwell so we need to
33:34move as quickly as possible you're all right mother you're all right how do you feel your breathing is
33:46going not good feels like i'm strangulating in there somewhere paramedics dan and ben are preparing to
33:56take 89 year old helen to hospital the grandmother has an irregular racing heartbeat that's starving her
34:03body of vital blood and oxygen let me just grab your arm here that's it a little blood pressure
34:12with helen's blood pressure still worryingly low dan prepares to boost it with additional fluid
34:19but suddenly there's an unexpected change oh as you know that heart rate's a little bit better
34:27i look at the monitor i look at the monitor and her heart arrhythmia has naturally gone to a lower rate
34:34and i'm thinking i've just won the lotto it's where we are now 112 112 yeah perfect oh yes your pulse is
34:42better too and how would you say your breathing is now a little little little little bit better
34:50you're talking a lot better now this is good let's go mate it's amazing she's far more comfortable
34:58she's not as short of breath and we can have a good old conversation i'm an ex-school teacher so
35:03watch your peasant i hope my grammar is correct miss and what subjects did you love teaching drama and
35:12english drama oh now english my son he is struggling learning macbeth did you like your shakespeare no
35:23not particularly i found him quite dull in parts yeah it's a dreadful subject i had to try and teach any
35:31kid here i am making assumptions that helen would be all for shakespeare with her teaching background
35:39but no she was on the side of my son i reckon i would have enjoyed your class most of them did
35:46there was a couple of it no matter what you did they're gonna be smart asses
35:54absolutely yeah that would have been me at hospital doctors will closely monitor the feisty 89 year
36:03old's heart to make sure it doesn't go back into a dangerously fast rhythm i've got to live a bit
36:10longer yet absolutely i don't have a champagne for my 90th beautiful that's a good aim not a very classy
36:18girl i really hope that helen can recover from this and can make it to that 90th birthday
36:26and have that glass of champagne with her family and friends i count myself privileged that i was
36:32able to meet her and have those chats i've met a real gem in helen let's do it let's get you inside
36:40okay
36:47so adrenal infusion's going let that bag's in go intensive care paramedic bill is frantically
36:54working on carolyn to stop her going back into cardiac arrest all right so yeah we have dropped
37:01our pressure we are down to 80 let's up that i reckon to 15. our blood pressure of 80 may not be that low but
37:09for someone that's come back just from cardiac arrest 100 would be the lowest i'm happy with
37:13because we know that the lower the blood pressure is in patients that are post cardiac arrest the
37:18worse the outcome that's at 98. we need to increase that blood pressure with either fluid or increasing
37:24that adrenalin infusion that we've got running all right so if she does rearrest we do have the arm there
37:29and that'd be the shopper wall with your shock straight away is that mechanical yep sounds good we're
37:34prepared for anything to go wrong with carolyn on the way to the hospital good work guys we've all
37:40got our roles and they're all really important from the driver getting us there safely from the person
37:45at the airway seat making them still breathing and for me with medications and blood pressure
37:49management is all part of the puzzle to keep carolyn alive she's a very lucky lady i was lucky that
37:55she was witnessed by bystanders and then they actually called triple zero unbelievable
37:59carolyn you're doing very well carolyn you're currently in the back of an ambulance we're
38:07taking you to the hospital when you've got someone who's unconscious at the end of the day i'm still
38:13sitting next to someone's mum i'm still sitting next to someone's sister someone's daughter someone's
38:18friend ben's sitting just behind you if it was one of my family members i'd want to make sure that
38:24my family members being looked after properly being talked through everything that's happening
38:29to them well we're pulling up now so we're good i'm just making sure that i'm being another good
38:34human being to another and helping her through this awful time in her life
38:41wow we just need monitoring we're good it's just sets
38:46it's hard to tell what the next steps in hospital will be because we don't even know why carolyn has
38:51gone into cardiac arrest in the first place we've all balanced vitro i think was 80. but she will be
38:57seen in emergency she will be seen by cardiac doctors neurology doctors and the works and she'll
39:04probably spend a long period of time in icu and hopefully with all my fingers and toes crossed she
39:09will have a positive outcome and walk out of hospital some day in the near future
39:22i'm worried that we essentially can't clear her spine paramedics sally and olivia feared 75 year old
39:29jennifer could have head and spinal injuries after a nasty fall at church
39:35she's had about five falls for me the past 12 months hubby johnny feared the worst
39:41just something shaped i couldn't die he's probably thinking i can't live life without her
39:46and just wanted to be by the side of the woman he loves everything's good everything's good
39:52oh that's beautiful fortunately at hospital jennifer's spine was given the all clear and her head wound
40:00was stapled together much to johnny's relief the couple were able to return home later that day
40:07and are looking forward to making more loving memories together
40:12i need to go down paramedics dan and ben were called to 89 year old helen after she began fighting
40:19for breath rapid af is it that'll probably affect her bp and chest pain they discovered she had a
40:25dangerously irregular heartbeat starving her body of oxygen your heart's going very very fast and they
40:32can fix that at the hospital but once in the ambulance that heart rate's a little bit better the
40:37feisty helen made a remarkable recovery i've got a little bit longer yet absolutely can have a
40:44shape i'm for my 90th beautiful that's a good aim so we want to have a cheers to mum oh my god we're
40:56going to get emotional happy 90th birthday mum cheers sadly helen didn't make it to her milestone birthday
41:05but today her family have gathered to share precious memories of a special lady today is a celebration of
41:12her life was nearly 90 years mum came good initially but her body was starting to let her down
41:23and she passed away she would be loving this she'll be looking down i reckon
41:33she'd come out with some quirky things sometimes and inappropriate stories
41:37i will miss her tremendously
41:47i just wish she was here that's all
41:54you have cracked your entire helmet you have hit that hard 20 year old hudson flew off his mountain
42:00bike in a national park crashing down a two meter embankment smacking his head
42:05that helmet served my life it did while it was a close call for the not very coordinated bike
42:11rider aaron and laura still needed to get him to hospital for a thorough check over take your time
42:19and once in the ambulance there was more thrill seeking as laura used her off-road skills to get them
42:25out of the bushland i feel kind of high from this at hospital scans showed no head or spinal injuries
42:36and after three weeks of rest hudson was soon proudly back in the saddle
42:42so we're going to go one two three four four months ago frightened bystander michael called triple zero
42:50when he found 61 year old carolyn suffering a cardiac arrest come on michael's heroic cpr
42:58saved her life
43:06have you got my dad sorted intensive care paramedic bill led a major response team
43:11to get the critically ill grandmother to hospital but there were major fears carolyn wouldn't survive
43:18the ordeal you just never know what the outcome may be whether carolyn will live or whether she will
43:23die as ambos we always hope for the best and i'll remember her face forever it's a really great
43:31reminder to live every day as well as you can because you never know what's around the corner
43:36and for carolyn that was definitely the case
43:38hello hello hello how are you good how are you a lot better now in hospital carolyn's life hung in
43:50the balance for days with the odds stacked against her carolyn really is a miracle
43:58to be able to see that she's here and hug her is something special and something i'll never forget
44:04you're looking fantastic thank you thank you very different to the last time i saw you i know
44:09that was a big day absolutely not that i remember it no i remember it very clearly yeah at least one
44:15of the stars carolyn now has an internal cardiac defibrillator and is well on the way to a full
44:22recovery so there's someone else that was there on that day his name is michael
44:27he's the guy who actually saved your life and called triple zero yeah would you like to meet him i would
44:33it's just behind you hi carolyn how are you oh so pleased to see you up and about
44:43i'm glad i could do my little bit for you thank you i wasn't gonna cry oh i think there's always a
44:50big chance that was going to happen absolutely absolutely i know without michael i wouldn't be here
44:56it's just really still raw emotional for me and i think it's always going to be
45:03i know it's been a while but i just needed the time of course you did yeah yeah but we're doing
45:08really well now thank you so much i actually don't see myself as a hero at all being able to meet
45:13carolyn was really emotional she couldn't stop saying thank you and that sort of does make you feel
45:18a bit proud bill i thank you so much that's all right michael you are my guardian angel well i did what
45:27i could for you and um yeah we'll always have that connection absolutely absolutely we will
45:33i'm gonna be here to hopefully to see my granddaughter grow up
