00:00Has the Netherlands banned Antifa?
00:06Посты circulating online
00:08are alleging that the Dutch government
00:09has banned Antifa.
00:11This umbrella term, which is short for
00:13anti-fascist, designates loosely
00:15affiliated far-left activists
00:17as well as groups that oppose
00:19fascism and neo-Nazism.
00:21Antifa is more of an ideology
00:23than an actual organisation,
00:25although some of its supporters have embraced
00:27militant tactics.
00:28Following the assassination of right-wing
00:30activist and Trump supporter Charlie
00:32Kirk, the US president said
00:34he would designate Antifa as a major
00:36terrorist organisation as part
00:38of his efforts to target the radical
00:40left. We have seen
00:42a rise in violence
00:43perpetuated by Antifa
00:46radical
00:48people across this country who subscribe
00:50to this group. No links between the
00:52suspect, Tyler Robinson, and any other
00:54left-wing groups, including Antifa,
00:56have been uncovered to date.
00:58However, following Trump's declarations,
01:00Hungary followed suit, announcing
01:02that it would also ban Antifa and
01:04urging the EU to do the same, as
01:06detailed in a letter addressed to the
01:08European Union's foreign policy chief,
01:11Kaja Kallas.
01:12As for the Netherlands, online users are
01:14also claiming that the country's government
01:16has banned Antifa.
01:17Now, according to the Dutch Parliament's website,
01:19a motion on labelling Antifa as a terrorist
01:23organisation in the Netherlands was passed on
01:25the 18th of September, with 76 out of 150 votes.
01:30However, motions are just recommendations rather than
01:33legally binding decisions. Although Parliament can submit
01:37motions, the Netherlands government is not obliged to carry them out, unless they are a motion of no confidence.
