As Taiwan Firms Expand Abroad, Officials Reassure at Home

Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao told a forum of business leaders in Taipei that the government will help Taiwanese companies expand internationally while addressing rising trade tensions and US tariffs. But some worry that national champions, like chip giant TSMC, might lose touch with home.

00:51Tensions have climbed since U.S. President Donald Trump

00:54began his global tariff plans in April

00:57with a 20% tariff on most Taiwanese goods

00:59starting last month

01:01U.S. tariffs and cross-strait tensions

01:03have led many Taiwanese firms

01:05to expand beyond their traditional investment destination of China

01:35And while that may help lower tariffs

01:37it's also raising concerns at home

01:39A recent poll showed that roughly half of Taiwanese people are worried

01:43that TSMC, which stands for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company

01:48may switch that T to an A for America

01:50as it continues to expand in the U.S.

01:53Amid these concerns

01:54The cabinet approved a nearly 17 billion U.S. dollar package

01:58that includes more than 1.5 billion

02:01to support companies facing U.S. tariffs

02:03to offer business loans

02:04and to promote Taiwan's products abroad
