00:00It was catastrophic. Soon the surface became uninhabitable. We had no choice but to go underground. The world we once knew is gone.
00:13This is Of Lies and Rain by the developers Castello Inc. and it was released on the 10th of September 2025.
00:20Made by a small indie team involving just a handful of people.
00:23But if those people all have passion for the same project and share the same goal, then greatness can be achieved.
00:28I remember playtesting this game over a year ago and I was loving the look of it then.
00:33So what's it like now? About the game.
00:35I love the story that drives through this game.
00:38The voice in your ear giving you timely snippets of the beautiful world they have created and how it came to be.
00:44You have woke up with no memory, no idea where you are, so leans into you as a new player to the game.
00:50The world has been taken over by machines and people have been forced to hide underground for survival.
00:55You have to battle through a destroyed planet looking for the ADE, which is the AI behind all this destruction.
01:02Fight machines and new alien light forms all struggling to survive on this very different looking planet.
01:08Levels and size.
01:09I absolutely love the designs of this world. It looks amazing.
01:13I spent so much time just looking around at stuff.
01:16You know you have a great game when you want to explore everything.
01:19The game is big. You get a sense that you have covered a lot of distance and there are many terrains to get through.
01:25I particularly like the gaps that you have to squeeze and pull yourself through using the square blocks to grab onto.
01:31Enemies and bosses.
01:32I love the enemy designs in this. They look terrifying.
01:36My only wish is that maybe some of them would give a terrifying screech at you before they attack, just to give the player a sense of a new fear.
01:43Otherwise, I love the designs. The laser looking flowers, the spider looking bugs that jump at you, the flying things. Everything looks brilliant.
01:51Weapons.
01:52Now, I remember when I first played this game over a year ago, I didn't like the weapon system.
01:57I can't remember why, so either it got fixed or improved on.
02:01Or maybe I just got better.
02:02Because this time around, I didn't have any problems and managed just fine.
02:06So you get a pistol to start, then a shotgun and then eventually an automatic gun.
02:10All need to be manually reloaded by ejecting the mag.
02:13Reach over your shoulder to get a new mag, insert and cock it, ready to go.
02:17They all handle really well. Gripping the guns feels nice and shooting them is great.
02:22Leveling up options.
02:24Every now and then, you will reach a place where you can step into a holographic looking dome.
02:29This is where you will buy your upgrades using the square GPUs that you find along the way.
02:35You will be able to level up things on you, then your pistol, shotgun, automatic gun and for the gear in the other data world looking place.
02:42You can upgrade stuff like the gravity grab, more health, double time in oxygen masks, GPU hunter, syringe doubler, larger magazines, increase the rate, armor piercing, store more ammo, sights and lasers.
02:58Even this detail of stepping into the holographic dome to buy upgrades is just imaginative and well designed.
03:04Puzzles.
03:05I'm not really sure if they class as puzzles, but occasionally you have to put your hand to a door to unlock it.
03:10But before it unlocks, you have to solve a code, all done by using holograms.
03:15It just looks fantastic.
03:17They are not that hard to solve, but they do get trickier as you progress through the world.
03:21Then also, there are some occasions when you are going to have to use your head.
03:25Like maybe you're stuck with nowhere to go.
03:27And if you see gas bottles laying around or fire extinguishers, you might have to place them on a wall and shoot it to cause an explosion.
03:35Mechanics.
03:36I didn't encounter any crashes or bugs whilst playing.
03:39And as I said, the environments they have created here look absolutely brilliant.
03:44It's such a joy walking through them and looking around.
04:00Walking, climbing, picking stuff up, shooting, bringing up your gun menu and inventory menu.
04:05Basic stuff.
04:06Game menus.
04:08Menus will offer you new game, resume last save, load game and quit.
04:12Then the setting menu offers you gameplay settings for language, subtitles, vibration, HUD, left or right main hand, movement source, crouch, rotation type and rotation speed.
04:24Then there's calibration settings.
04:26Graphic settings.
04:26I had my refresh rate at 120.
04:29And then there's audio settings for master, sound effects, voiceover and breath.
04:34My thoughts.
04:35I have to say that for a small team, this game is just beautiful.
04:39Playing through this game is just bliss.
04:41Now I will note that one thing that got a little bit annoying was the gasping for breath when you go into a toxic cloud.
04:47And I don't want the answer to be to just add more inhalers, but rather to just change the sound of the breathing so it's not every second.
04:54But maybe every 5 to 10 seconds.
04:57Enough to remind you that you still need to find an inhaler, but not enough to annoy you.
05:01But then, as I've been doing this review, I've just noticed that there is a setting to turn down the breath.
05:06So that might help a lot.
05:07I'd also like to have seen maybe 2 or 3 more designs of enemy.
05:11Maybe like a monkey style that climbs.
05:14A wolf style that stalks and waits until your back is turned.
05:17And maybe an enemy that glitches in and out of reality.
05:20So you have to time your shot to hit him when he's glitched in reality.
05:24Doesn't have to be a lot of them, but just enough to break up the game a little bit more.
05:27Then I wish they would add instructions on the machine that you have to stick your arm into.
05:32It has boxes, red eye looking things flying around, and what looks like strands of DNA.
05:37But doesn't really give you clear instructions on the purpose of being in there.
05:41You just seem to need to get from the start point to the end point by jumping to and from safe ledges and structures.
05:47There is no real clear point of why you go in there.
05:50Anyway, despite my thoughts, this still really is one great game.
05:55And I've just had a blast playing through it and really enjoyed these environments.
05:59So indeed, greatness has been achieved here.
