00:00MI6 is launching its own dedicated portal on the dark web in the hope of attracting
00:06new spies online. Will this recruitment drive actually work?
00:13Well, it's early days yet and difficult to say. I mean, the experience in the private sector,
00:18the private intelligence sector, which I now work in, is relatively positive in that the dark web
00:24has become a medium in which you can obtain information of relevance to investigations,
00:30for example. However, in general, the information that you glean on the dark web tends to be
00:37documentary in nature and quite low grade in a sense, more routine intelligence on people's
00:43movements and people's interests and things like that, and not the sort of high level strategic
00:49intelligence on China and Russia that certainly the governments of Western countries are looking
00:55for. So it'll be intriguing to see, and we may not know, of course, in due course,
00:59whether this works or not, but it's certainly worth a try.
