00:20More than 4,000 U.S. Marines and sailors are now moving out of San Diego aboard three amphibious
00:28warships, and their destination is raising major questions. The USS Macon Island, USS Anchorage,
00:36and USS John P. Murtha departed San Diego on September 28th, carrying the 13th Marine
00:43Expeditionary Unit. The Navy describes the deployment as scheduled, and officials have
00:49not publicly confirmed a final destination. But multiple reports indicate the force is heading
00:56toward the Middle East as Washington increases its military presence around the Iran conflict.
01:02So what exactly is the United States sending? The 13th MEU is a Marine Air Ground Task Force
01:11built to operate from the sea. It includes a reinforced infantry element, Combat Logistics
01:18Battalion 13, and aviation units equipped with MV-22 Ospreys, AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters,
01:27and F-35B Lightning II fighter jets. Together, these capabilities give the MEU a broad range
01:35of options. It can conduct amphibious operations, crisis response, maritime security missions,
01:42and limited contingency operations. The Marine Corps itself describes the 13th MEU as a forward deployable
01:50force designed to provide national leaders with combat-ready options without necessarily requiring
01:57foreign bases. And this isn't a unit heading out unprepared. The 13th MEU completed months of integrated
02:05training before deployment, including realistic urban training and amphibious readiness exercises.
02:12The unit officially formed as a complete Marine Air Ground Task Force earlier this year.
02:18Its history also includes major overseas operations. The 13th MEU has deployed to the Persian Gulf,
02:26Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other regions. During its 2016 deployment, the unit operated in the
02:355th and 7th Fleet areas, supporting operations against ISIS and participating in missions involving
02:42Yemen and regional partners. So does this deployment mean the United States is preparing to attack Iran?
02:50Not necessarily. An amphibious ready group can support a wide range of missions, from deterrence and crisis
02:57response to combat operations. And the Pentagon has not announced that the 13th MEU is being
03:05sent specifically for an invasion or ground offensive. But the timing is significant. The Macon Island
03:12ARG is deploying alongside a broader U.S. military buildup in the region. The USS Theodore Roosevelt
03:21Carrier Strike Group has also departed San Diego, while additional U.S. forces are being positioned around
03:28the Middle East. That means Washington is increasing the number of military options available to commanders.
03:35The presence of F-35Bs, attack helicopters, Ospreys, Marines, and amphibious ships gives the United States
03:44a force capable of responding rapidly if the mission changes. For now, however, one key detail remains unknown.
03:52Where exactly is the Macon Island ARG headed? The Navy has confirmed the deployment.
04:00The final destination remains undisclosed. And until Washington announces a specific mission,
04:07the movement of the 13th MEU should not by itself be treated as confirmation that a U.S. ground attack
04:14on Iran is imminent.
