00:00:00The End
00:00:30Let's go.
00:01:00Let's go.
00:01:30Let's go.
00:02:00Let's go.
00:02:29This is the sea, as old as the world itself.
00:02:33It extends over three-quarters of the surface of the globe.
00:02:36The sea, the birthplace of life, the great storehouse of minerals, the prison of haunting
00:02:42mysteries.
00:02:43The ocean is a dangerous jungle.
00:02:46Each creature preys relentlessly upon another.
00:02:53Each animal is equipped with an effective weapon.
00:02:56Speed.
00:02:58Camouflage.
00:02:59Knife-like teeth, poison.
00:03:02eluia.
00:03:03Come on.
00:03:05He says,
00:03:20THE END
00:03:50Since time began, the ocean has withheld its secrets.
00:03:57Man has ventured merely to its threshold.
00:04:00Oceanographers have, with precise instruments, presented us with a framework of facts.
00:04:05Around these facts, our imaginations reconstruct the eerie, forbidding atmosphere of the deep.
00:04:11Scientists, working with sonic equipment, discovered a mysterious layer which returned an answer to sound waves.
00:04:18This layer measured over 300 miles and lay 1,500 feet below the surface.
00:04:24It was soon noted that the phantom layer rose to the surface at night and descended to the deep water in the daytime.
00:04:31It is composed of living creatures capable of locomotion that are apparently strongly repelled by sunlight.
00:04:39Some oceanographers believe the layer to be made up of plankton.
00:04:43Others suggest that it is a gigantic concentration of fish.
00:04:47The most startling theory about the phantom layer is that it is composed of millions of squid.
00:04:52This theory is supported by the fact that squid are tremendously abundant.
00:04:55As the sun's rays become weak and soon turn into complete darkness, the fish are all black, brown, or silver.
00:05:05In the blackness of the deep sea, the strange phenomenon of luminescence is found.
00:05:09Half the fish that inhabit the darkened waters are able to turn their luminous torches on or off at will.
00:05:15Lower forms of life are known to have this luminous ability as well.
00:05:18Some fish have rows of lights.
00:05:21Perhaps these are signals, signs of recognition.
00:05:24The deep sea squid ejects a fluid which becomes luminous,
00:05:27a counterpart to the ink ejected by his cousin who lives in shallow water.
00:05:32The eyes of many creatures who live in the black world are enlarged and protruding,
00:05:37making the most of the intermittent lights which may reach them.
00:05:40On the other hand, some animals have no eyes at all.
00:05:43They have developed and perfected antenna and feelers.
00:05:46Their entire world is known to them through the sense of touch.
00:05:51Several years ago, a fish was caught alive off the southeast tip of Africa.
00:05:56It was an amazing sight.
00:05:58This animal was supposed to have been dead for at least 60 million years.
00:06:02After this discovery, they found the frill shark.
00:06:05He lived 25 to 30 million years ago.
00:06:08Perhaps there are other such anachronisms to be found in this region
00:06:11about which we know so little.
00:06:13Other links with the past.
00:06:14Perhaps we can find the answers to many of these questions.
00:06:18We are now prepared to invade this black wilderness.
00:06:21I hope you enjoyed the pictures.
00:06:34We had a great time filming them.
00:06:36As most of you know, tomorrow marks the completion of Mr. Matheny's diving bell.
00:06:41I hope the next film we make will give us a lot more information.
00:06:43You really think you'll find it much different at greater depths?
00:06:57Occasionally, a new species may rise briefly to about a hundred feet from the surface
00:07:02and be seen by a diver.
00:07:03They return quickly, however, to, oh, about six hundred feet.
00:07:08We intend to see what may exist thousands of feet below that.
00:07:12Matheny, I've had a lot of admiration for the things you've been doing in shipbuilding
00:07:16and navigation equipment.
00:07:17But this diving bell of yours is sheer nonsense.
00:07:20It's a waste of money.
00:07:20I'm sorry you don't share our enthusiasm.
00:07:24Even if it does work, which is doubtful, does that justify the cost involved?
00:07:29Curiosity is one thing, but you spent over $70,000 on a toy.
00:07:33Have you ever heard of Millard Wyman?
00:07:36Of course, I've read his books, and I believe he's your brother.
00:07:40He believes the sea could hold a food supply vast enough to feed the entire world.
00:07:45You've built this bell for him?
00:07:47I'm afraid Mr. Wyman needs no help from us.
00:07:50He had his practically completed at the time we began.
00:07:53Then what's the sense of another?
00:07:55No frontier was ever explored by just one expedition.
00:08:00Our first dive will be in the Pacific.
00:08:02Then we'll try the Gulf.
00:08:03Right now, Wyman is in the Caribbean.
00:08:06He's making his first attempt with Hisbel somewhere along the southeastern Keys.
00:08:33Our position's perfect.
00:08:36Good.
00:08:36Better take a rest while I double-check the bell.
00:08:38I'll be ready as soon as we get some clothes.
00:08:44Craig says our location is perfect.
00:08:46Looks like a big moment's finally here.
00:08:48Well, Laurie and I are all set.
00:08:49How about Miss Marshall?
00:08:50Oh, yes.
00:08:51I'd better...
00:08:51No, never mind.
00:08:52I'll get her for you.
00:08:53Try to relax, Mr. Wyman.
00:08:55You should be elated, not worried.
00:08:57I guess I'm too anxious.
00:08:59If you look at me, you'd think I was the one who's going down there.
00:09:01Come on, let's get going.
00:09:03Oh, come on.
00:09:04Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait a minute.
00:09:07We shouldn't release anything until I come back up here with the pictures.
00:09:10What do you think I'm going down in that contraption for?
00:09:13Look, we'll have an absolute exclusive on this.
00:09:16Every wire service will get the depth information,
00:09:18but we'll be the only ones with the actual pictures.
00:09:21Now, doesn't that make much better sense?
00:09:23Come on, lady reporter.
00:09:24The time has come for your promotion.
00:09:26Or should I say demotion?
00:09:27Well, whatever it is, Skipper, you won't lose me on this show.
00:09:31I'll go on back to the show and call with Boppers.
00:09:38Well, this will make a good picture.
00:09:40Hold it.
00:09:45So, goodbye, Tom.
00:09:46Good luck, Dale.
00:09:47Good luck, Dale.
00:09:49Go on, Dale.
00:09:50I know you're disappointed that Tom couldn't make it,
00:09:53but I just couldn't get him to come out.
00:09:55He asked me to give you this.
00:09:56Well, I hope he knows what he's doing.
00:10:01Because I do.
00:10:08There, this is in good order.
00:10:17I suppose I shouldn't make a fool of myself
00:10:21telling you what this day means to me.
00:10:23Well, you people are taking my place in a way.
00:10:27I feel as if you've been working with me since the beginning.
00:10:31We're very grateful to be able to have a part in your work.
00:10:35You'll be going deeper than any man has ever attempted before.
00:10:39I wish I could go along with you.
00:10:41I know how you feel, Mr. Wyman.
00:10:43But I'll be talking to you every inch of the way.
00:10:45I know, Craig, but it's not quite the same thing.
00:10:47Well, good luck, Craig.
00:10:51Paul, Mr. Wyman.
00:10:53Your girls won't let me down now.
00:10:55You take care of these fellas if they get scared.
00:10:57I'll get it.
00:11:08Stand by the dropper.
00:11:10Craig, you ready?
00:11:11Ready whenever you are.
00:11:13Air pressure okay?
00:11:15It's fine.
00:11:16Everything's 100%.
00:11:17Here we go.
00:11:20All right.
00:11:22Release!
00:11:23Tilt at two degrees.
00:11:46Release one pellet from the left ballast too.
00:11:48Another one.
00:11:56That's got it.
00:12:04You just passed a thousand feet, Craig.
00:12:06How's it going?
00:12:08Everything's fine.
00:12:10Just police two fellas to get a balance.
00:12:18Thirteen hundred now.
00:12:29Is it getting dark?
00:12:30No, not yet.
00:12:32There can't be any sun penetrating now.
00:12:53You're almost seventeen hundred.
00:12:57That's fine.
00:12:58Only half the lights are working.
00:13:03Checked every cable.
00:13:04No brakes.
00:13:07Craig, are you okay?
00:13:09I don't know.
00:13:10The lights.
00:13:15Craig, what happened?
00:13:17I think something's buckling.
00:13:18Craig, what's working?
00:13:21What's working, Craig?
00:13:23The cable's left.
00:13:24We're hanging over to one side.
00:13:25Craig, I think we're going to...
00:13:28Craig, Craig!
00:13:31Can you hear me?
00:13:34Craig!
00:13:51Excuse me.
00:13:52Hello?
00:13:55Yes, he is.
00:13:57Just a moment.
00:13:58Mr. Matheny.
00:14:00Long distance.
00:14:02Hello.
00:14:03Oh, hello, Hank.
00:14:04How's everything?
00:14:06What?
00:14:10One of my reporters radioed from the ship.
00:14:12He'll interview Wyman before the launch gets out there.
00:14:15I can't believe it.
00:14:17The conditions were ideal.
00:14:19I see.
00:14:21Yes, of course I do.
00:14:22You can reach me here.
00:14:23I'll be in all day.
00:14:25Thanks for calling, Hank.
00:14:29Your brother's attempt was a complete failure.
00:14:32The bell broke loose at 1700 feet.
00:14:35Can we contact the ship?
00:14:37I'm afraid we'll have to sit tight until Hank's men get into Key West.
00:14:41He promised to call us as soon as he hears from them.
00:14:43Mr. Wyman.
00:14:53Sorry to barge in on you this way.
00:14:56We'll be leaving the ship soon.
00:14:57I wonder if you'd give me some information.
00:14:59You saw everything?
00:15:00What can I add to it?
00:15:02Would you mind telling me something about the occupants?
00:15:04I know Dale Marshall, but not much about the other three.
00:15:07The other three, as you put it, were very brave people.
00:15:12Over competent as I was.
00:15:14Well, had they been working with you long?
00:15:16Laurie and Paul were students of mine at the Institute of Oceanography.
00:15:21Craig joined us a bit later on.
00:15:23Mainly, I suppose, because of Laurie's devotion.
00:15:26Well, did they have any part in actually designing the bell?
00:15:30No, I'm afraid not.
00:15:32I'm the only one who's responsible for that.
00:15:34Well, what do you believe went wrong today?
00:15:37I don't know.
00:15:39If I did, it wouldn't help matters.
00:15:41Well, the bell obviously had a weakness.
00:15:43You must have some idea where it was.
00:15:44Everything was planned in research.
00:15:47I don't know the answer.
00:15:50The public will take a pretty dim view of your research.
00:15:52I suppose so.
00:15:55The right opinion of me doesn't matter now.
00:16:04The right opinion of me doesn't matter now.
00:16:33Craig.
00:16:39Breathe deeply.
00:16:41Give some to Miss Marshall.
00:16:44Craig, did we...?
00:16:45Yes.
00:16:47I don't know how deep we are.
00:16:52You feel all right?
00:16:54I think so.
00:16:59Marshall, stop it!
00:17:01Hold yourself!
00:17:03Oh!
00:17:25How much time do you think we have?
00:17:28The oxygen tank only holds a hundred cubic feet.
00:17:31Well, at least the shutoff valves worked.
00:17:34We could have been flooded when the cable broke.
00:17:37Although I don't know what good it is to prolong the inevitable.
00:17:40Laurie worked with Wyman for three years to build this.
00:17:44Dale Marshall was going to get a big story.
00:17:46You were going to see new sea creatures for the first time.
00:17:49Pretty noble ambitions to be blown up by one engineering mistake.
00:17:53Oh, well, I probably wouldn't have seen any new...
00:18:01Craig.
00:18:03We're not on the bottom.
00:18:05There's light out here.
00:18:07We must be on some kind of a shelf not too far below the surface.
00:18:11I don't see how that's possible because we dropped out of the penetration of light.
00:18:16But how could we have moved upward?
00:18:19I don't know.
00:18:21At this point, I couldn't care less.
00:18:24Will we be able to get out of this thing?
00:18:27Look, at this level, the pressure shouldn't bother us.
00:18:30We should be miles in the darkness, but...
00:18:33Yet we're not.
00:18:40What are we waiting for?
00:18:42Let's check out of here.
00:18:58It'll probably be in a long, old hole to get to the surface.
00:19:00Just remember, try not to get panicky.
00:19:04Well, you better go first. Give the girls somebody to follow.
00:19:07Right.
00:19:30Let's go, never mind.
00:19:35Let's spread that a little mulch here.
00:19:37Ugh...
00:19:40I'm sorry.
00:19:42Because of the whole thing, do that?
00:19:46But it can be slightly bigger.
00:19:48We'll hold out by the feet.
00:19:50We will move it.
00:19:54We'll leave here in a moment and water.
00:19:56This time, okay, won't you take a huge拉 cord?
00:20:27Captain, Mr. Wyman, come here, quick.
00:20:38Do they have a chance to make it?
00:20:58The pressure is much too great for survival at that depth.
00:21:02Then why would they attempt to leave the bell?
00:21:05Not knowing how deep they went, I suppose they figured it was worth a try.
00:21:08Isn't there something we can do some way that...
00:21:11They'll never make it to the surface even without the pressure.
00:21:15I'm afraid they will crush the moment they left the bell.
00:21:18What we see is their bodies floating up over the currents.
00:21:22Oh, my God.
00:21:38Oh, my God.
00:21:43Oh, my God.
00:21:53Oh, my God.
00:21:56Oh, my God.
00:21:59Oh, my God.
00:22:04Oh, my God.
00:22:14Oh, my God.
00:22:20Oh, my God.
00:22:22Oh, my God.
00:22:27Oh, my God.
00:22:40Oh, my God.
00:22:42Oh, my God.
00:22:44calling ships in vicinity of longitude 23 latitude 75 please stand by to search
00:22:51the area repeating ships in vicinity of Marlin 8 please stand by to assist
00:23:06JCR 774 we're about a quarter of a mile north by east of original location I
00:23:12have a diver descending he'll cover a thousand yards moving south by west I'll advise of any results
00:23:18got it over and out how long do you think it'll take for the bodies to reach the surface it's been
00:23:28quite some time since we lost them on the sonar it may not come up this far at all prepare to move
00:23:35out we don't spot them in about five hours I know it's none of my business but didn't you
00:23:41have your own money tied up in that Bell I mean it was your own project with no affiliation
00:23:46none of the universities had any confidence in it only myself those down there I understand there's
00:23:54another Bell ready built by an outfit in California my younger brother designed it
00:23:59they'll be interested in finding out where mine failed I suppose we'll never know the answer to
00:24:05that
00:24:21it's fantastic there must be miles upon miles of these tunnels yeah so many of them we could easily get
00:24:29lost we better head back yeah
00:24:34you were gone so long we're getting worried our lives were reprieved today Laurie I don't think we should get scared now I found the answer to one thing these rocks are loaded with phosphorus
00:24:49that's how the caverns are illuminated but did you find anything else a way out we might be here a long time before we find a way out a long time you see we're good many miles beneath the surface Bell went down all right but it must have rolled into one of these openings
00:25:04there'll be a long climb up even if we do find a long climb up even if we do find a way what do you mean if we'll have to find a way
00:25:11well it'll be treacherous going but we'll find a way out in time first thing to do is to keep our heads and put something in our stomachs
00:25:20saw plenty of fish down there we can fashion some spares from rods and the Bell you going back to the Bell well I don't think we get very far
00:25:26without our shoes and a few other things look as long as I'm gonna be a caveman I want to be a comfortable one come on let's go
00:25:35now
00:26:19We better work fast.
00:26:43I think they're living.
00:26:49Come on, let's get out of here while we're still ahead.
00:27:17Anything else we can take?
00:27:19This compass will help us more than everything else put together.
00:27:21Let's go.
00:27:23Let's go.
00:27:25Let's go.
00:27:27Let's go.
00:27:29Let's go.
00:27:31Let's go.
00:27:33Let's go.
00:27:35Let's go.
00:27:37Let's go.
00:27:39Let's go.
00:27:41Let's go.
00:27:43Let's go.
00:27:45Let's go.
00:27:47Let's go.
00:27:49Let's go.
00:27:50Let's go.
00:27:51Let's go.
00:27:52Let's go.
00:27:53Let's go.
00:27:54Let's go.
00:27:55Let's go.
00:27:56Let's go.
00:27:57Let's go.
00:27:58Let's go.
00:27:59Let's go.
00:28:00Let's go.
00:28:01Let's go.
00:28:02Let's go.
00:28:03Let's go.
00:28:04Let's go.
00:28:05Let's go.
00:28:06Let's go.
00:28:07Come on.
00:28:08he didn't leave any too soon there's a storm following right now wait come in
00:28:16excuse me sir but I I have something I believe is important yes well I called
00:28:21you and mr. Wyman while I was watching the sonar but well apparently you didn't
00:28:24hear me and I want to keep my eyes on the screen it's all about it again well
00:28:29sir I I don't know exactly what I saw but I'm sure they weren't dead bodies I
00:28:34saw two of the same masses move practically as they did before how do
00:28:40you know they're the same well the characteristics were identical and they
00:28:44weren't floating I'm positive they were moving into their own power how long did
00:28:49you have them several minutes sir they moved along together then one suddenly
00:28:54changed direction I lost them at exactly the same spot as before you probably saw
00:29:01some large fish that were curious about the bell begging your pardon sir but I
00:29:05see plenty of fish on that screen I know this reading was of something else you
00:29:10said they changed direction turns pretty strong at that depth but only one veered
00:29:15off the other continued straight up well whatever the objects were it's a sense
00:29:20the bodies aren't going to float to the top and we've wasted enough time as it is
00:29:24sir it's possible that'll be all Wilson return of the radio room I have
00:29:29problems enough with a storm to contend with yes you know if we had all the
00:29:45conveniences of a kitchen that's still preferred barbecue just like this when
00:29:49we leave here what do we eat then well these caverns have water pools everywhere
00:29:54probably fishing all of them I also saw some planktonic shrimp back around the
00:29:59rocks must really be late anyone as tired as I am you better get some sleep
00:30:05Laurie you too Dale we've been through a lot today we'll probably do a lot of
00:30:08walking tomorrow Dale and I found the crevice it's fairly dark inside at least
00:30:13will seem like nighttime don't worry about getting cold in there I'll bet the
00:30:17temperature here doesn't vary two degrees you make it sound like Miami Beach come on
00:30:22it's not the ocean floor either good night you plan to take all this diving
00:30:34gear along with us hmm it's too heavy leave it right here what do you think our
00:30:39chances are what do you really think you sound as though I haven't been leveling with Dale
00:30:46Laurie I know you create you've got an uncanny ability to hide what you feel well I've been
00:30:55diving for quite a few years but the deepest I ever went was about 200 feet frankly I
00:31:01haven't any more idea about where we are now than you do well haven't you ever heard of
00:31:05these underground caverns I read some theories about the earth being honeycombed with caverns
00:31:11containing air pockets then the air we're breathing might not be coming from the
00:31:15surface possibly not if you want to believe theories how far down do you think we are no idea
00:31:24might find out something about the mineral deposits along the way well I guess only time will tell
00:31:34you know I'm gonna get some sleep you know I'll probably dream about breaking an altitude record in a helium balloon
00:32:04so
00:32:11yeah
00:32:16yeah
00:32:19yeah
00:32:21yeah
00:32:24yeah
00:32:27yeah
00:32:30yeah
00:32:32Let's go.
00:33:02Let's go.
00:33:32Can we drink it?
00:33:36No salt content.
00:33:39Probably good as any well water.
00:33:41It's better.
00:33:46Can we afford a time out here?
00:34:02Sure we can, Laurie.
00:34:02We'll rest until you're ready.
00:34:04We'll rest until you're ready.
00:34:34You should have kept that.
00:34:37Maybe a while before you get anything else to read.
00:34:39When I need your advice, I'll ask for it.
00:34:43Sorry.
00:34:45I didn't realize.
00:34:46You don't realize a lot of things.
00:34:48You probably never will.
00:34:49I didn't mean to intrude, Dale.
00:34:53It was just a friendly joke.
00:34:56Friendly.
00:34:57Well, you just listen to me, Miss Innocent.
00:35:00There's nothing friendly between two females.
00:35:03There never was and there never will be.
00:35:06Sorry you feel that way.
00:35:08I was hoping we could help one another.
00:35:10You don't need any help.
00:35:14Neither do I.
00:35:16Not as long as we have two men around us.
00:35:20Doing anything good with that key?
00:35:22This is the hardest stone I've ever seen.
00:35:25But before I'm finished, we're going to have a first class night.
00:35:27I think these rocks must be about 60% iron.
00:35:32Must be magnetized.
00:35:34Is that compass still acting up?
00:35:36It's not consistent.
00:35:38You know, I think it would be better just to follow our instinct.
00:35:42We could go around in circles.
00:35:43We've been doing some of that with the compass.
00:35:47You know, I've been following these rock formations.
00:35:50I still can't tell one from the other.
00:35:52Well, we're just going to have to notice everything that's slightly unusual.
00:35:56Make sure we don't pass anything twice.
00:35:59Hey, what do you say we break the tops off of some stalagmites whenever we can?
00:36:03It's a good idea.
00:36:04We've got to make a lot of markings because
00:36:06if we can't find enough stalagmites, we'll have to
00:36:09pile some rocks together.
00:36:13What do you think that compass is not working?
00:36:16Well, the iron in these rocks.
00:36:18I thought maybe it was because we were down so far.
00:36:24I guess not.
00:36:27Well, it could be that too.
00:36:29But these are designed to work on a horizontal plane.
00:36:32We're getting pulled from every direction.
00:36:36You know, Craig,
00:36:37I thought of something we should have done when we went back to the bell.
00:36:41What's that?
00:36:42Well, those compression tanks are buoyant, right?
00:36:45They can take a lot of pressure.
00:36:46We should have taken one,
00:36:49scratched a message on it,
00:36:50and then released it.
00:36:52Note in a bottle from a shipwrecked sailor, huh?
00:36:54Sure.
00:36:55Well, suppose somebody did find it.
00:36:56You think they'd send us an answer?
00:36:59At least they'd know we're alive.
00:37:03I think it's just as well they think we're not.
00:37:07Yeah, he couldn't possibly reach us.
00:37:09Yeah.
00:37:11Maybe you're right.
00:37:12But I'll bet some people really keel over when we do get out of here.
00:37:19Don't get too anxious.
00:37:21What do you mean?
00:37:24I mean, I think we're a long way off.
00:37:26But the fresh water?
00:37:28It's a good sign, and we certainly need it for survival.
00:37:31But I don't think it necessarily means that we're any closer to the top.
00:37:33Oh, look, Craig.
00:37:35I've been following the rock formations and the colorings.
00:37:38I've seen a definite change.
00:37:39Well, I have too.
00:37:41I'm simply judging by the number of hours we've traveled against the distance to sea level.
00:37:45Or maybe higher.
00:37:47Don't tell me you're getting cold feet, Craig.
00:37:50You know, I might be tempted to tell some of the boys from old Charlie's squadron about this.
00:37:54Well, I guess you wouldn't be lying to them at that.
00:37:56Well, don't worry.
00:37:59You can trust your old dad.
00:38:00I won't say a word.
00:38:02I've got faith in you, Craig.
00:38:04Why, when we get out of here, I'm going to be your best man.
00:38:08Come on, let's hit the road.
00:38:09Right.
00:38:14Well, you guys ready to start out again?
00:38:18I was ready to start before we rested.
00:38:21If you've got any of the energy to spare, I could use it.
00:38:24Come on, that's me.
00:38:25There's no opening.
00:38:47We're trapped.
00:38:48Take it easy, Dale.
00:38:49We'll find one.
00:38:50She's right.
00:38:52The only openings are small cracks.
00:38:53We couldn't possibly get through them.
00:38:56We'll have to go back.
00:38:57No, we shouldn't lose our direction.
00:38:59There's a water pool to the left, about 50 yards back.
00:39:02We'll have to try going through it.
00:39:04And if that doesn't lead to another cavern?
00:39:05Then we'll have to drop back to the fork and try another course.
00:39:08That'll mean losing a lot of time.
00:39:11Well, let's try it.
00:39:13Yeah, let's go.
00:39:14Let's go.
00:39:22Let's go.
00:39:23Let's go.
00:39:28Let's go.
00:39:28Oh, my God.
00:39:58I sure hope Paul brings back plenty of shrimp.
00:40:17Feel like I could eat about three dozen of them.
00:40:20He said there wouldn't be any shrimp around in the clear water.
00:40:23He's looking for some sort of crawfish.
00:40:25Yes, so there are plenty of them.
00:40:26So what's the difference? They both taste terrible.
00:40:30I'm going to hunt up some roots for the fire.
00:40:37Come on.
00:40:44Watch out.
00:40:46Take a look at that.
00:40:51So we're not the first ones to be here.
00:40:53You know, it's not exactly my line, but I'd say he's been dead about 10 or 12 years.
00:41:01It's horrible.
00:41:02He probably kept walking until he dropped.
00:41:05Look, this is the best indication we've had yet.
00:41:07This man could have come down here directly from the surface.
00:41:10And I suppose he liked it so well he decided to stay here and die.
00:41:15Perhaps he just lost his way.
00:41:17Is that any better?
00:41:18Great!
00:41:20What on earth?
00:41:38So he's a weirdo.
00:41:40Who else would come down here?
00:41:43You're so right, Skipper.
00:41:45Listen, I don't care who leads us out.
00:41:47I don't care who leads us out.
00:41:48Hello!
00:41:48Hello!
00:41:49Hello up there!
00:42:00Hello!
00:42:01I guess he can't hear us.
00:42:05Come on.
00:42:05Come on.
00:42:05Come on.
00:42:07Come on.
00:42:09Come on.
00:42:10Come on.
00:42:11Come on.
00:42:12Come on.
00:42:13Come on.
00:42:14Come on.
00:42:15Come on.
00:42:16Come on.
00:42:17Come on.
00:42:18Come on.
00:42:19Come on.
00:42:20Come on.
00:42:21Hello.
00:42:22Are we glad to see you.
00:42:26What do you want here?
00:42:28We don't want anything.
00:42:29Except to get out.
00:42:31We were underwater in a diving bell.
00:42:33The cable snap dropping us to the bottom.
00:42:35We left the bell and found our way in here.
00:42:37You see, we were attempting to break a depth record.
00:42:40Oh, I'm Paul Whitmore.
00:42:42This is Craig Randall, Laurie Talbot, and Dale Marshall.
00:42:45I've been here 14 years.
00:42:4814 years?
00:42:50Well, I don't think we want to stay quite that long.
00:42:56Would you mind leading us out?
00:42:58There is no way out.
00:43:01But how did you get here?
00:43:04And that fellow back there?
00:43:05He was killed a long time ago.
00:43:08I was more fortunate.
00:43:11But how did you get here?
00:43:13The same as you.
00:43:15And you haven't found a way out in all this time?
00:43:18There is no way.
00:43:20There is no way.
00:43:25This is the air we're breathing.
00:43:27It wouldn't be here if there weren't an opening to the surface.
00:43:31The air comes from a volcano about two miles from here.
00:43:35Are you sure of that?
00:43:37I'll show it to you.
00:43:40Would you like to visit my home?
00:43:43I don't know.
00:43:46It isn't far.
00:43:49I'll take you there.
00:44:19You need rest.
00:44:28It certainly made this place comfortable enough.
00:44:33I carried stones here to make pots.
00:44:36And flint for fire.
00:44:39Sometimes I traveled to the salt water to bring back seaweed.
00:44:44Look at the size of this claw.
00:44:47There's no known species this large.
00:44:50I use it to spear fish.
00:44:53But you have fine weapons.
00:44:56With them we can hunt much better.
00:44:59Are you positive there's no opening to the top?
00:45:02Even a small one we could hack out with some kind of tools?
00:45:05I'll take you to the volcano so you can see for yourself.
00:45:11And then you will know as I do.
00:45:14How soon can we start?
00:45:17We must first have food.
00:45:20I have enough for all of us.
00:45:22Do you think he really knows?
00:45:26I don't think he knows up from down.
00:45:28But we'll have to go to find out if there is a volcano.
00:45:30Well there's no sense in all of us knowing.
00:45:31You and Laurie should take a breather.
00:45:33Do you want us to stay here for a reason?
00:45:35Well we'll probably be taken through some pretty rough places.
00:45:37No telling how dangerous.
00:45:39I'd feel better if you stayed.
00:45:41You all set Craig?
00:45:42Yeah.
00:45:43The old man's been up there waiting for over an hour.
00:45:45Don't you think he's a little eager to show us that volcano?
00:45:47That's why I want the girls to stay down here.
00:45:50Never did buy that story about that ship sinking 14 years ago.
00:45:53You know?
00:45:54I don't know.
00:45:55I don't know.
00:45:56I don't know.
00:45:57I don't know.
00:45:58I don't know.
00:45:59I don't know.
00:46:00I don't know.
00:46:01I don't know.
00:46:02I don't know.
00:46:03I don't know.
00:46:04I don't know.
00:46:05I don't know.
00:46:06I don't know.
00:46:07What do you think he's got up his sleeve?
00:46:12Maybe nothing.
00:46:13But I still think it'd be a good idea if you'd wait down here with Dale and Laurie.
00:46:17Oh, now wait a minute, Daddy-O.
00:46:19I'm no babysitter.
00:46:20I'll tell you what I'll do.
00:46:22I'll trade places with you.
00:46:24Okay, you win.
00:46:26We'll both go.
00:46:27I think the girls will be alright as long as we stay with him.
00:46:30Yeah.
00:46:31Besides, they're planning a swimming party.
00:46:33And we weren't invited.
00:46:35Come on.
00:46:36Come on.
00:46:39It's too bad we can't get a sun time.
00:46:41I can do without it.
00:46:43The sun always gives me a bad time.
00:46:45I got burned once at the beach and...
00:46:48Oh, well, that's not important now.
00:46:50We've been here quite a long time.
00:46:52They should be getting back soon.
00:46:53Are you afraid they'll bring bad news?
00:46:55I'm afraid I am.
00:46:57I keep telling myself that old man couldn't possibly be right.
00:47:03I can't make myself believe it.
00:47:06We'll know soon enough, one way or the other.
00:47:09You know, I was afraid.
00:47:12Until I realized that if we do spend the rest of our lives here,
00:47:15we can at least start a new one.
00:47:18Anything that happened in the past can't bother us here.
00:47:21Don't make me think about it.
00:47:24And let's not start painting any dark pictures before we know.
00:47:27They're here.
00:47:57You're so quiet.
00:48:04Does that mean that...
00:48:05That volcano's there, all right.
00:48:07Spouting air by the ton.
00:48:09Well, then he was right.
00:48:12Well, never...
00:48:13Lori!
00:48:14Help!
00:48:15Lori.
00:48:16Look, it won't be so bad.
00:48:19We took it hard, too, at first.
00:48:22Walking down there and all that, but...
00:48:24Look, I know it's not going to be so terrible.
00:48:27After all, we've gotten...
00:48:34Lori, listen to me.
00:48:37Please, look.
00:48:40I know how you feel.
00:48:42As though you had nothing to look forward to, but...
00:48:45I felt the same way until I realized how really fortunate I am.
00:48:49That is, if you...
00:48:52What I'm trying to say is that...
00:48:55Lori, I've been in love with you for a long time.
00:48:58I planned to tell you before now.
00:49:00I just...
00:49:01I never seemed to be able to.
00:49:03Oh, I wish you had.
00:49:05I wanted to hear you say you love me.
00:49:08Oh, Lori, as long as I have you, my life's complete.
00:49:12Anything beyond that's unimportant.
00:49:16Oh, oh.
00:49:36Take care.
00:49:37We'll!
00:49:41And reports indicate the strike will be settled this week.
00:50:11On the local scene, Marine Research of California has abandoned the scheduled launching of an experimental
00:50:17diving bell.
00:50:18J.R.
00:50:19Matheny, president of Marine Research, is rumored to have lost some $90,000 constructing the
00:50:24bell during the past 18 months.
00:50:26And now for a look at the weather.
00:50:28Early morning fog will cover the harbor area with little change in temperature.
00:50:41T.W.A. flight number 201 is now arriving.
00:51:08Good afternoon.
00:51:13My name is Wyman.
00:51:15I believe Mr. McKean is expecting me.
00:51:17Yes, of course.
00:51:18Mr. Wyman to see you.
00:51:19Send him in.
00:51:20It's the first time.
00:51:21It's the first time.
00:51:22It's the first time.
00:51:23It's the first time.
00:51:24It's the first time.
00:51:25It's the first time.
00:51:26It's the first time.
00:51:27It's the first time.
00:51:28It's the first time.
00:51:29I think it's the first time.
00:51:30It's the first time.
00:51:31I'm here, sir.
00:51:32That's the first time.
00:51:33My name is Wyman.
00:51:34I believe Mr. McKean is expecting me.
00:51:35Yes, of course.
00:51:36Mr. Wyman, to see you.
00:51:37Send him.
00:51:38It's the first door.
00:51:39Go right in, please.
00:51:41I'm a pleasure to meet you very pleased to meet you sir sit down you certainly got out here quickly
00:51:54I came directly from the airport telegram sounded quite urgent suppose you elaborate for me well I
00:52:01understand you're giving up your plans to try your bell we've given it a lot of consideration
00:52:07of the project has been costly and we've devoted the entire lab to the Bell's development I'm afraid
00:52:12the wisest thing we can do at this time is just give up the project this of course because of the
00:52:17results of mine Wyman if it weren't for your pioneering in research this Bell wouldn't have
00:52:21even been built when your brother came to work for me I know where his ideas were coming from
00:52:26you mean your ballot similar to mine as you can see the designs are identical
00:52:35but the hatch cables are they the same why yes why Mr. Metheny I'd like to ask you for a personal
00:52:45favor a favor you have no confidence in your bell because it was patterned after mine and rightly so
00:52:51but if I could take the responsibility off your shoulders what do you think he'd have I can make
00:52:57the dive myself in the same location as before I don't understand how can you of all people consider
00:53:03doing this when you know that the bell is I believe it can be done I've always believed it I can't at least turn my
00:53:09failure into a success I'll be doing a grave injustice to four gallant people what makes you think that the results would be any
00:53:17different this time since I returned from the Caribbean I've been like a man who was living apart from his own soul I knew there was an answer
00:53:26somewhere but when I searched for it my mind just wouldn't function I think it was because of my condition
00:53:32that I finally discovered where the bell failed you found the reason the chain broke not at the weakest link
00:53:39but at the strongest I don't understand the bell was designed with supports to take a stress five times
00:53:44greater than what we anticipated we even thought of using rooms on two different ships as its added safety factor
00:53:51we overcame that with added couplings together with a pilot release system for balance but in our extreme measures for added strength
00:53:58we actually defeated our own purpose until we stopped work here the plans were to use three ships for support you don't need them
00:54:06depending on the overall weight descending you must equalize the supports to parallel the point of water
00:54:12pressure above and below 2,000 feet you mean it's it's the pressure pushing upwards that causes stress
00:54:19exactly we went all out for strength and supporting the bell and reached the point of water pressure where
00:54:26there was no up-and-down factor the couplings ripped off the seams Wyman I know what a successful operation
00:54:33would mean to you and I certainly want to help but this is this is all come so fast I don't know
00:54:38what to say of course I wouldn't ask you without offering something in exchange I have a ship available
00:54:44it will take us to the Caribbean it's fully equipped the owner do everything he can to assist
00:54:49I suppose if I didn't go along with you don't need a matter of time before you'd you'd raise some money
00:54:57and be building another valve your own just mean an unnecessary delay however I'm afraid there's one
00:55:03thing I'll have to object to you're going under but if I I know that young brother of yours
00:55:11you jump at the chance let's go out to the lab and see him
00:55:33you
00:55:41you
00:55:43you
00:57:45I hope they bring my camera back with him.
00:57:48I could use it for one of the decorations.
00:57:51Craig said that they would only bring back the most important things.
00:57:53I'm sure your camera...
00:57:54Craig said this.
00:57:56Craig said that.
00:57:57Craig said.
00:57:59What is he around here anyway?
00:58:00Some kind of monarch or something?
00:58:02He would take that old fool with him when he could use a couple of extra hands to help carry things.
00:58:08I'm sure Craig knows what he's doing.
00:58:10That's exactly what I mean.
00:58:12I'm fed up with his doing.
00:58:16Nobody's going to dominate me.
00:58:17I'll see to that.
00:58:18Nobody's trying to.
00:58:19If you think I'm going to put up with this routine, you're crazy.
00:58:22Dale, there's nothing I can do to make you feel any better.
00:58:24Oh, yes, there is.
00:58:25And you're going to start doing a few things my way.
00:58:27Dale, I don't want to argue with you.
00:58:29Will you just leave me alone?
00:58:30I'll leave you alone when I get good and ready to.
00:58:32And so will Craig when the time comes.
00:58:35So that's it.
00:58:37You're not getting all the attention.
00:58:40You're pretty smug, aren't you?
00:58:42Just because we're all chapped.
00:58:43That's enough.
00:58:44And Dale, I don't want to discuss this again.
00:59:00How many more trips is this going to take?
00:59:22This long is nearly empty.
00:59:23Well, there's just a few more things I'd like to get down there.
00:59:26You probably have enough air for one more dive.
00:59:28So let's make it count.
00:59:29Okay, well, I'll keep an eye on you.
00:59:53I found the original bell.
00:59:55It's 100 feet below me.
00:59:58Wait a minute.
00:59:59Unless I've lost my mind, I see two men in the water.
01:00:03Come on.
01:00:03Wait a minute.
01:00:04Oh, my God.
01:00:34I telephoned above as soon as I spotted the other bell, and they still can't believe it.
01:00:39How was Laurie and Miss Marshall?
01:00:41The girl's been doing all right.
01:01:01How long have you been out of here?
01:01:02Only a few minutes.
01:01:03I've got some coffee.
01:01:04Good.
01:01:13There.
01:01:14He's coming around.
01:01:15I like you much better than the others.
01:01:27I like you much better than the others.
01:01:43That's just fine.
01:01:45I'm very glad you do.
01:01:46I will help you.
01:01:48That's all I need.
01:01:49We will kill them.
01:01:51We will what?
01:01:53It is easy.
01:01:54Like I killed Maurice a long time ago.
01:01:57And after we kill them, we can be alone here.
01:02:00Now, you stay away from me.
01:02:03Stay away.
01:02:04Stay away from me.
01:02:07Maybe I should kill you instead.
01:02:09Please.
01:02:11Stay away.
01:02:12No.
01:02:16Don't.
01:02:17Don't.
01:02:19The volcano!
01:02:49The volcano!
01:03:19Let's go into one of these openings.
01:03:31That's not going to do any good.
01:03:32We've got to go find Craig.
01:03:49Craig, Craig, Craig, are you all right?
01:04:19Craig, are you all right?
01:04:23Yeah, yeah, I'm all right.
01:04:25How about you?
01:04:25We're all right.
01:04:26And the old man?
01:04:27He was killed in the avalanche.
01:04:32Here, look at these.
01:04:33Where did you get these?
01:04:34Never mind.
01:04:35Put them on.
01:04:38Come on, follow me.
01:04:49Come on, follow me.
01:05:19I really can't explain the feeling when we first saw the bell.
01:05:28We'd given up hope and, well, nothing ever looked so good.
01:05:32I do wish the old man had been as fortunate as we are.
01:05:36If Mr. Wyman's up there, tell him that Laurie is fine.
01:05:41She'll be saying hello in just a minute.
01:05:43Laurie, I think from now on my whole life will be changed.
01:05:51I realize how terrible I've acted.
01:05:53Do you think you can ever forgive me?
01:05:55Of course I can, Dale.
01:05:57I've always wanted our friendship.
01:06:10Laurie!
01:06:10Well, little lady, you've got the scoop of the year.
01:06:14Well, not this time, Jimmy.
01:06:15The story goes to all of you.
01:06:17I want you to meet your benefactor.
01:06:20Mr. Matheny.
01:06:21Matheny, we're very grateful.
01:06:22We have only Wyman to thank.
01:06:23It's all his idea.
01:06:25Can't thank all of you enough.
01:06:27Come on, you people, move back a little.
01:06:29Let's give them room to breathe.
01:06:32Room to breathe.
01:06:34You know, I never thought about it much, but there's nothing greater.
01:06:37Well, I don't know about you people, but man, I'm ready for a two-inch sink.
01:06:43Let's go, Bob!
01:06:44We're back!
01:06:46We're back!
