Inside Elland Road Podcast | Farke gets it wrong with Aaronson defence but right with Gray stance
Transcript
00:00I am gravely worried about the lack of goals
00:02and it is making me feel a little bit uneasy
00:05about my predicting survival at the minute
00:07because it's hard to see.
00:09It's really hard to see where the goals are coming from.
00:13Well, how about we throw in a name that was mentioned to him?
00:18Harry Gray, Bagda Hatrick.
00:20Obviously, we're seeing 15-year-olds
00:23making their debuts in the Premier League.
00:26There's countless examples across Europe,
00:28a player 16-17 coming in.
00:31There was obviously a bit of a clamour for him to be started
00:35and Farker did address that.
00:38Yes, he did.
00:41His answer was kind of to say,
00:43I think I know a little bit about bringing youngsters through
00:46and look at my record,
00:48which you could see,
00:51certainly in the past, the examples he gave were good.
00:55There may be some other examples at Leeds
00:58where, yes, he played Archie Gray,
01:01but how could you not?
01:03He was absolutely sensational
01:05and he proved to be sensational.
01:09Maybe another couple of examples
01:10where people's opportunities
01:12maybe haven't quite arisen.
01:14Charlie Creswell,
01:17I know there's still people
01:18that think Farker was right on that
01:20and there's people that think
01:21that his situation was mismanaged.
01:24Matteo Joseph,
01:25there's maybe a question mark there
01:27over how that was managed
01:29across the course of last season.
01:30When it comes to Harry Gray, though,
01:32I think I agree with Farker
01:34and I think the reason I agree with Farker
01:36is it would be very easy
01:38for a manager under pressure
01:40to get goals
01:41to chuck in a 16-year-old
01:44as the answer
01:46and make that the story.
01:50And almost,
01:52there's a couple of facets to it.
01:53You'd be saying to the board,
01:54look what you've left me with.
01:56You've left me trying to get goals
01:57out of a 16-year-old
01:58or you'd be making the 16-year-old the story.
02:01I don't think I would be comfortable with that.
02:03Unless he's absolutely banging them in
02:05and training, right?
02:06And he's putting Rodon
02:08and Stroik on their arses
02:09and slotting them past
02:11Darlow and Mellier.
02:14Unless he's doing that with frequency,
02:16then he can't really start
02:17in the Premier League,
02:18you know,
02:18because scoring a hat-trick
02:20against National League
02:22Scunthorpe's second string
02:24is just one more step
02:26in his development.
02:27It's not the suggestion
02:28that he's now ready for men's football
02:29because the difference in level,
02:32the difference in level
02:33between Championship
02:35and Premier League
02:36is vast.
02:37The difference between
02:38National League,
02:39second string
02:39and Premier League
02:40is they're different sports
02:42entirely.
02:43And yes,
02:44Scunthorpe had very,
02:46very experienced,
02:47battle-hardened
02:48kind of lower league,
02:50National League defenders.
02:51So he wasn't playing against kids,
02:52he was playing against men.
02:54For me,
02:55that's just the next step
02:56in his progression,
02:57you know,
02:57to be able to,
02:58and for him,
02:59it's great for his confidence.
03:00You know,
03:00I played against a men's team
03:01and scored goals,
03:02scored three of them.
03:03It doesn't say he's ready
03:05for Premier League
03:06at all.
03:09So you almost have to
03:11bow to the manager
03:11in this case.
03:12If you get to a point
03:13where none of the centre-forwards
03:15are scoring
03:16and,
03:18you know,
03:19Leeds absolutely need
03:20to do anything
03:20and try anything
03:21and pull every single lever
03:22to try and score a goal
03:23and stay in this league,
03:24then maybe,
03:25you know,
03:25you turn into a 16-year-old.
03:27But I just think
03:28there's real dangers in it.
03:30There's a danger
03:31that you put in a kid,
03:33he's not ready,
03:34he has a shocker
03:35and he goes under,
03:37you know,
03:38that his confidence goes.
03:41I think you could do
03:41real damage
03:42to a young player.
03:4416 is very,
03:45very,
03:45very young
03:45to be playing
03:47in the Premier League
03:47against,
03:48you know,
03:50giant men,
03:52physical specimens,
03:53elite athletes
03:54who've been defending
03:55for as long
03:57as he's been
03:58on the planet.
