There are two sides to art: the fun, creative side and the business side. Every artist would rather spend their time creating new pieces and learning new skills rather than analyzing numbers and promoting themselves through multiple avenues. Everybody wants to draw silly little guys or write about them, rather than stress over profits and analytics.

But, unfortunately, the business side is the most important part if you wish to be an independent professional artist.

00:00There are two sides to art, the fun, creative side, and the business side.
00:06Every draw artist would rather spend their time creating new pieces and learning new skills
00:10rather than analyzing numbers and promoting themselves through multiple avenues.
00:16Everybody wants to draw silly little guys or write about them
00:19rather than stress over profits and analytics.
00:23But unfortunately, the business side is the most important part
00:27if you wish to be an independent professional artist.
00:33Knowing some basics in CSS, Bootstrap, and HTML
00:37gives artists another potential avenue for sharing their art.
00:42They can make pages about their characters on highly customizable websites such as Toy House,
00:47or they can make a basic shop or gallery as a searchable webpage.
00:51The ability to design a webpage is another avenue of creativity
00:55that can make projects stand out more.
00:58There is also a technical aspect that may scratch a certain itch that some minds may have.
01:04While this more technical aspect is not for everyone,
01:07it is worth a shot to see if it is satisfying for you.
01:14Whether you want to do a voiceover or start a video-based social media account,
01:19being comfortable with a camera or a microphone will go a long way.
01:24If you wish to get into fashion, costuming, dance, or any other forms of art involving your body,
01:30then you will need to be able to handle having pictures of yourself taken
01:35and posted publicly online if you wish to share your creations.
01:40Even if you are an illustrator, you may want to share your process or give some advice.
01:44You might want to experiment with other forms of art.
01:48Getting over the discomfort of using a camera or a microphone
01:51can make trying new things a lot easier down the road.
01:57Speaking of a skill that will make experimenting easier,
02:01writing is another creative skill that is paramount.
02:04If you wish to make comic books, start a blog, or try animation,
02:08then you need some basic writing skills so you can make passages or scripts.
02:12Being able to write down at least an outline will help give a sense of direction for bigger projects,
02:19especially if they involve a story.
02:21An outline will keep your project structured and prevent it from becoming directionless.
02:27It will give you a guideline to work with, even if you don't want to use a full script.
02:34The final skill every artist should have is handling social media backlash.
02:39For a long time, artists will just be posting into the void.
02:43They'll make works they're proud of and be ignored.
02:47While this will eventually change for many artists,
02:49it does have its consequences that are far worse than not gaining any interaction.
02:55Not everybody who interacts with posts enjoy what they are interacting with.
02:59Sometimes the people who may not like you or your work will come in large waves.
03:04Or perhaps you will make a social mistake that will make people feel the need to come and harass you.
03:10This is a situation that ended many careers for artists,
03:14scaring them away from the internet and causing them to download posts or create again.
03:19Being able to handle social media backlash and online harassment
03:24is perhaps the most important skill to have in your arsenal.
03:29The ability to weather the storm and not get destroyed by how cruel people can be
03:34will allow your career to persist past the lows and climb to the highs.
03:39If you know these four skills,
03:44then you are well on your way to being a well-rounded artist who can make projects that stand out.
03:50While there are more skills you can learn to further improve your craft,
03:54the skills recommended are simple to get started with a low barrier to entry.
03:59Everybody has a means to write,
04:01and everybody has a camera in the form of their phone.
04:04There are plenty of free resources for learning and practicing HTML.
04:07Although I can't recommend one source or one way to learn these skills,
04:12as different resources will work for different people.
04:15So, look around the internet and find what resource works best for you.
04:20Either it be a video, a book, or a full course.
04:26Of course, these are just the skills I recommend.
04:30This list is not exhaustive,
04:32and there are many things I don't know or haven't thought about.
04:36If there is a skill you believe artists are lacking in,
04:40feel free to comment what it is.
04:42I know I'm always learning,
04:44so I would love to see what other artists recommend,
04:47so I can teach myself those things.
04:50Make sure to do your other interactions while you're down there,
04:53and follow me while you're at it.
04:55I will see you again in the future.
