Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the greatest Sailors of the Seven Seas to grace the silver screen.
00:18Number 10. Hector Barbossa, Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise
00:22You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner. You're in one.
00:27Introduced as the antagonist of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa may be the most pirate-y in a long film series chock-full of scallywags.
00:36That isn't to say he's generic, however, as Rush puts a surprising amount of humanity and pathos into the role of an undead cursed pirate.
00:43We are cursed men, Miss Turner. Compelled by greed we were, but now we are consumed by it.
00:53He also has the sort of motivation we can sympathize with, and, in subsequent installments, he becomes more of an anti-hero.
01:00Whether he was a captain, a pirate lord, or a privateer with a peg leg, Barbossa was always a cunning and bold leader, and not one to be trifled with.
01:08Your head, or my head, I'll have you on your tongue, I don't care.
01:12Number 9. Captain Blood
01:14Captain Blood.
01:15The Golden Age of Hollywood was full of swashbuckling adventure films set on the high seas, many of which starred the dashing Errol Flynn.
01:22We have an old proverb in England that says, those who sail without oars stay on good terms for the wind.
01:28As the title character in his first major role, Flynn played a doctor who ultimately escapes enslavement and becomes a feared buccaneer.
01:35Alright, my hearties, follow me!
01:37It's no wonder Flynn instantly became a star, as his performance was filled with passion, both in terms of battle and his romance with Arabella.
01:44My thoughts have lumped you with your uncle.
01:47How was I to know, be dead, that a devil could have...
01:50That a devil could have an angel for Nice.
01:53Blood puts his swordmanship skills on display a number of times, most notably in the thrilling duel against the villainous Levasseur.
02:00Number 8. Yondu, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1-2
02:04You're alive cause of me!
02:06I will find you!
02:07I will put a bounty on it!
02:10Not all pirates pillage in the ocean, some sail across the stars.
02:13As a member of the Ravagers, a group of space-faring pirates, Yondu was well-known and feared across the galaxy.
02:19However, after breaking their code, he was expelled from the group and went into business for himself.
02:24I don't give a damn what you think of me!
02:27So what do you follow that for?
02:28Cause you're gonna listen to what I gotta say!
02:30I don't gotta listen to nothing!
02:32You betrayed the code!
02:33Leading his crew of ragtag aliens, Yondu was greedy, while also hiding a compassionate soft spot,
02:38particularly for his protege, Peter Quill, who came to think of Yondu as a father.
02:43I'm sorry I didn't do none of a rioting.
02:46I'm damn lucky you, my boy.
02:48This combination of desire for treasure, paired with empathy for his crew and regret for a dark past,
02:54makes him a quintessential pirate captain.
02:56Number 7. The Pirate King.
02:58The Pirates of Penzance.
02:59Yes, Frederick.
03:01From today, you rank as a full-blown member of our band!
03:06Continuing the role in the famous Gilbert and Sullivan operetta that won him a Tony on Broadway,
03:12Kevin Kline brought the role of the Pirate King to the big screen as well.
03:15The king fights, sails, and commands his crew with the best of the entries on this list.
03:20But one thing in particular sets him apart, a magnificent singing voice.
03:23And he's the king's the glorious thing to be a pirate king!
03:27He frequently uses that voice to sing his own praises, and can be quite boastful, arrogant, and at times, even heartless.
03:33Of course, his moral code makes him more than a simple villain, and having been one himself, has a soft spot for orphans.
03:40Don't say you're orphans, for we know that came.
03:44On your allegiance we've a strong acclaim.
03:48Number 6. Simbad.
03:50Simbad, Legend of the Seven Seas.
03:52The legend of Simbad the Sailor has been around for hundreds of years,
03:55and even on film, has a long and historic pedigree.
03:58A man's destiny lies in his own hands.
04:03A live dog is better than a dead lion.
04:05Films like The Golden Voyage of Simbad covered his swashbuckling adventures,
04:08but, for our money, his greatest appearance came in this animated outing from DreamWorks,
04:13with Brad Pitt voicing the titular role.
04:15I'd love to stop and catch up, but I've got things to do.
04:17Places to go, stuff to steal.
04:20More than a supreme sailor and swordsman,
04:22Simbad is a charming rogue that becomes drawn into a love triangle with his childhood friend Proteus,
04:27when he falls in love with Proteus' fiancée.
04:29I was never jealous of him, though.
04:32Until one morning a ship came into harbor.
04:35A ship with his future on it.
04:37Simbad also faces off with a figure even more unpredictable than himself.
04:41The goddess of chaos herself, Eris.
04:44Follow that star beyond the horizon.
04:46You'll find yourself in Tartarus, my realm of chaos.
04:52Tartarus. I'll see you there.
04:54Number 5. Abduwali Muzi. Captain Phillips.
04:58Unlike the other films on our list, which are tales of historical fiction and fantasy,
05:02Captain Phillips is based on true events,
05:04namely, the hijacking of the U.S. cargo ship Mayor Scalabama.
05:08Four pirates on board. Four pirates.
05:10Coming towards us, down the main deck.
05:13It was the first time pirates had successfully seized a vessel
05:15registered under the American flag in two centuries.
05:18The Somali pirates who took the ship were led by Abduwali Muzi,
05:22and their violent and brutal tactics imbue the film with a real sense of terror.
05:26It's no wonder that Muzi's line after taking the ship,
05:29I am the captain now, has become so iconic.
05:31Hey!
05:34Look at me, sure.
05:36Look at me, sure.
05:37I'm the captain now.
05:38Barkhad Abdi, who played Muzi, received universal praise for the role,
05:42and was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
05:45I come too far, Iris.
05:48I can't give up.
05:50No.
05:51Number 4. Captain Hook, Peter Pan.
05:54The iconic villain invented by J.M. Barrie
05:57has appeared on the silver screen plenty of times,
05:59including in the title role of 1991's Hook.
06:01I hate, I hate Peter Pan!
06:07As great as some of those performances are,
06:08all will inevitably be compared to Disney's animated Captain Hook.
06:12Sir, you want a splash, Mr. Starkey.
06:17I'll give you a splash!
06:19Who's next?
06:21The character is an archetypical pirate,
06:23with his flamboyant red outfit and namesake,
06:25the latter of which replaced his right hand
06:27after it was bitten off by a certain crocodile.
06:29Save Muzi, please! Don't let him get Muzi, please!
06:32Don't let him get Muzi, please!
06:33Don't be fooled by his gentlemanly-like appearance.
06:36Hook is the merciless, although frequently comical,
06:38leader of the pirates terrorizing Neverland.
06:40His goals are to destroy his seemingly internal rival, Peter Pan,
06:44as well as enact revenge on that ever-ticking croc.
06:47Captain!
06:49Captain!
06:50Captain!
06:51Number 3.
06:52The Dread Pirate Roberts
06:54The Princess Bride
06:55When it comes to pirates, the name is the important thing.
06:58You're the Dread Pirate Roberts, admit it!
07:00With pride.
07:01What can I do for you?
07:03For decades, the name of the Dread Pirate Roberts
07:05struck fear into people across the seven seas,
07:08as it recalled a fearsome swordfighter and ruthless captain that took no prisoners.
07:12Of course, the story of Roberts isn't exactly what it seems.
07:15It's actually a title passed from one individual to another,
07:17and his very reputation causes enemy ships to surrender without conflict.
07:21No one would surrender to the Dread Pirate, Wesley.
07:23So we sailed ashore,
07:27took an entirely new crew,
07:28and he stayed aboard for a while as first mate,
07:30all the time calling me Roberts.
07:32His unparalleled swordsmanship seems to stay consistent with each pass of the torch,
07:36as displayed during Wesley's legendary duel against Inigo Montoya,
07:39who would go on to inherit the title.
07:41Have you ever considered piracy?
07:43You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts.
07:45Number 2. Long John Silver. Treasure Island.
07:52You've got the word of Long John Silver.
07:57Ship me.
07:58Much of our modern perception of pirates can be traced back to the character of Long John Silver,
08:03beginning with his appearance in the 1883 novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.
08:07In Disney's 1950 adaptation,
08:09Robert Newton played the salty sailor with one leg and a parrot.
08:12Believe!
08:13Ain't you the pretty one,
08:17swearing blue fire in front of a gentleman?
08:20Newton's portrayal became so iconic,
08:23that the image has persisted all these years later whenever we think of a pirate.
08:26In fact, our imaginings of a pirate accent,
08:29with the ars and yars,
08:31comes from Newton's own English West Country accent.
08:33Come back here, you lovely turd!
08:36Oh, for ten toons!
08:39Countless others have used the accent as Long John,
08:42including the prolific Tim Curry.
08:44His turn as the complex cutthroat in Muppet Treasure Island
08:47needs to be mentioned alongside the great pirate portrayals as well.
08:50This is a one-time special offer of Jim Land.
08:53Say no,
08:54and I will be forced to, um,
08:56terminate our relationship.
08:58Before we unveil our top pick,
09:00here are a few honorable mentions.
09:02Blackbeard,
09:03Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides,
09:05a notorious historical pirate in an important film franchise.
09:08And what fate befalls mutineers?
09:12Now we know the answer to that,
09:14do we not?
09:16Mutineers have...
09:17Captain Shakespeare,
09:20Stardust.
09:21He soars through the sky harvesting lightning,
09:23and hides a sophisticated side.
09:25So,
09:26this is the part where you tell me who you are,
09:30and why you're up here.
09:32Red Rackham,
09:33The Adventures of Tintin,
09:35An Ancestor of Evil.
09:36The legend says,
09:37only a haddock can discover the secret of the unicorn.
09:41But it took a Rackham to get the job done.
09:44The Pirate Captain,
09:46The Pirates in an adventure with scientists,
09:48aka,
09:49The Pirates Band of Misfits,
09:50an Ardman animated adventurer.
09:53I'm the Pirate Captain,
09:55and I'm here for your gold.
09:58Gold?
09:59This is a plague boat, old man.
10:01Jim Hawkins,
10:02Treasure Planet,
10:02A new take on a classic character.
10:05What if...
10:05The whole planet is the mechanism,
10:09and the treasure is buried in the center of this planet.

10:28Number 1.
10:29Jack Sparrow,
10:30Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
10:32Son,
10:34I'm Captain Jack Sparrow.
10:37He's heavy.
10:38Oh, sorry.
10:39That's Captain Jack Sparrow.
10:41What truly makes Jack such a great character,
10:43is that we are never truly sure where his allegiances lie.
10:46While he seems to be a good man who values his friends,
10:49his own sense of self-preservation usually wins out.
10:52Existing in a time when the edges of the map were being filled in,
10:55and adventure was disappearing,
10:56Sparrow represents something we all desire.
10:58Freedom.
10:59All the alien, slack and braces.
11:01Hi Captain, slack and braces.
11:04Step lively.
11:05Whoever will.
11:06I am going away, sir.
11:08I'm on the fire down below.
11:09Though he was originally envisioned as a much different,
11:11more clean-cut character,
11:12when Johnny Depp was cast,
11:14he brought a unique vision to the role.
11:16You've stolen me,
11:17and I'm here to take myself back.
11:20He, along with the writers,
11:21directors,
11:22and even costume designers,
11:23turned the character into an icon,
11:25that will sail on in our pop culture memory forever.
11:27Avast!
