00:00So, Alexander Isak starts for Liverpool. The headline and the answer to the big, big question, the 125 million pound man at Anfield career starts tonight.
00:12He's one of three changes, replacing Hugo Ekotike up front, elsewhere Jeremy Fringpong and Andy Robertson both start.
00:19Robertson's first start of the season, Kirk Essel Macau has the dropout.
00:22Dominic Saboslai plays his 50th game in Europe and his 100th for Liverpool.
00:27No English starters in a European game for Liverpool for the first time in club history.
00:37The referee tonight is Maurizio Mariani from Italy and the captain's Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool and Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid.
00:47Julian Alvarez misses out for Atletico Madrid tonight. He's injured and back in between.
00:59And club captain Koke starts on the bench. England international Conor Gallagher starts in midfield.
01:05And Chacobo Raspardori, partners Antoine Griezmann up front. It's a milestone night for the Frenchman.
01:11His 450th game for the club. Jan Oblak, 50 better. Tonight he plays for Atletico Madrid for the 500th time.
01:20Liverpool have had some great strikers. Dalglish, Rush, Fowler and Owen to name just four.
01:32Alexander Isak starts his Liverpool journey tonight and hopes to eventually be mentioned in the same sentence one day.
01:38Milestone night for two of Atletico Madrid's all-time greats, the keeper Jan Oblak and the striker Antoine Griezmann.
01:53So Liverpool's Champions League opener is here, their 50th season of European football.
01:58And as always, on nights like this, Anfield is raring to go. Good evening, Ali McCoy.
02:05Good evening, Gallant. Very much looking forward to this one.
02:08Well, it's a special place at the best of the teams, but European nights has just got a different smell to it, hasn't it?
02:17So there's the roar, there's the first long ball forward by Virgil van Dijk looking for Alexander Isak
02:23and the first defending on that side for Javier Gallan.
02:30Here's Connick to Bosley.
02:34And an early touch here for Ryan Gravenberg.
02:36Four Dutchmen, by the way, starting in the Liverpool team.
02:39No Englishman, the only English player on the pitch tonight is Conor Gallagher.
02:43Connick finding a bit of space away from Antoine Griezmann and then picking out three partners back in the team.
02:59Now Mo Salah involved for the first time.
03:01Just showed a little bit too much of that to Gallagher,
03:08and concedes the first free kick.
03:10So this is the first of eight league-phase nights for Arna Slott.
03:14Liverpool trips to Istanbul, Milan, Frankfurt and Eindhoven are ahead for them.
03:18The team that topped the table last season, even if it didn't really offer much of an advantage in the end.
03:24And they're right up there again with the fancied teams to win this Champions League.
03:29Yeah, and it's settled for that, wouldn't they perform in seven out of eight wins?
03:32Won all four at home.
03:34Particularly impressive performance, I think we're here for the Real Madrid, getting the win 2-0.
03:38The four home games in aggregate are ten and one, so clearly, as we all know,
03:43it can be quite an intimidating place.
03:47Ibrahim Canate.
03:54Sorry, just the first thing, I'm looking at the shape of Atlético Madrid.
03:58Simeone's dropping back, it's almost a five when they're out of possession.
04:02And Raspadori is dropping into a four in the middle of the park.
04:06The only reason they've only got 11 behind the ball is that he can't pick 12,
04:09that's gonna be the tactic tonight, isn't it?
04:11For Simeone, Gravenberg, upended, pre-kick.
04:14A little bit clumsy, wasn't it, Clement Longley?
04:19Yeah, he was.
04:23Watch the touch, he knows the tackle's coming in.
04:26Lifts up the undercarriage, free kick.
04:37There's the man in black, Diego Simeone,
04:39he'll celebrate 14 years in charge of Atlético Madrid in December,
04:43the outfit never changes, the passion never leaves him.
04:45If you walk down an alleyway with him,
04:47you'd be pretty confident you'd come out the other side, wouldn't you?
04:53Agreed.
04:56You wouldn't want to meet him coming the other way, though.
04:58He could have a row in an empty room, there's no doubt about that.
05:01So, Florian Pertz and Mo Salah over the Liverpool free kick,
05:05first organising tonight for Jan Oblak to do.
05:10We have an early opportunity here at the Anfield road end for Liverpool.
05:15the Liverpool keep the ball.
05:17.
05:22.
05:24.
05:25.
05:26.
05:27.
05:28.
05:29.
05:30.
05:31.
05:32.
05:34.
05:36.
05:37.
05:38.
05:39Mo Salah went low, took it, he clutched it in.
05:48Andy Robertson's going to claim it.
05:51First time he's started this season,
05:53and he's gone and backed himself a goal inside four minutes.
05:56There's an element of fortune, there's nothing that Oglac can do,
06:00but Liverpool will take it.
06:02It's their first Champions League goal of the season,
06:05and on a night when you want to get off to a good start,
06:07that's the perfect way to do it.
06:09You're right, there is an element of fortune,
06:11but I'll tell you what, he starts at an offside position behind the wall,
06:14look, and then he runs out.
06:16I was watching him, gets himself well onside.
06:20Ball's fired at him.
06:22Not sure he knows an awful lot about it.
06:26Does it come off him or does it come off the defender?
06:29It's an interesting one.
06:32It might be the defender, I'm not sure.
06:34Enemy, what a start for Liverpool.
06:38Well, I'll tell you what, if it is the defender,
06:41he's very good faking it, isn't he, Andy Robertson,
06:43because he's gone off to take the adulation of his teammates.
06:46So they're crediting it to Robertson at the moment,
06:57and if he has scored tonight,
06:59it's his first Champions League goal in almost six years.
07:01The only other one he got was against Salzburg back in October of 2019.
07:06It's been a while.
07:07Now, we do think it has gone enough, Andy Robertson,
07:13we're going to try and clear it up,
07:15but whichever way you look at it, Liverpool have the lead.
07:23Well, that's a bonus, no Englishman in the Liverpool series,
07:26at least the Scotsman scored there, that's a bonus.
07:28I'm not surprised you've made that point.
07:30So 1-0 Liverpool, Anfield in full voice,
07:33and Canata in possession,
07:34and they haven't really had a touch of the ball yet, Atletico Madrid.
07:37No, they've not.
07:44That's right, Gravenberg, and then running in is Mo Salah.
07:46Great balance, great finish!
07:48Great finish!
07:52Wonderful balance from Mo Salah,
07:55and look at the celebrations.
07:58The goal, inevitable.
08:04Salah scores his 45th goal in the Champions League for Liverpool,
08:07nobody's got more than him.
08:10Liverpool in dreamland inside six minutes,
08:13and Simeone's got the weight of the world on his shoulders, 2-0.
08:17Darren, this is magnificent.
08:19It's all about the weight of the return pass to him,
08:22and the use of Salah's body.
08:24First of all, great overlap from Fripkamp,
08:26allows him to come inside.
08:29This is the pass there, beautiful, look at his body strength there.
08:32Puts himself between the two defenders,
08:34and once he gets in that position,
08:36you know he's finishing.
08:37Opens it up,
08:39and the rest is easy for him.
08:41What a goal, great goal.
08:42Well, I spoke about milestones tonight,
08:44the number of games for Griezmann and for Oblak,
08:47that's the 250th goal in English football for Mo Salah,
08:52so it's a milestone,
08:53and nobody has done it better in recent times in Liverpool Red than him.
08:59It's brilliant, isn't it?
09:00I mean, the move itself, the one-two, the give-and-go,
09:02and then he puts his body in front, uses his strength,
09:04and once he does that, you just know there's nobody better in that position.
09:10Composure, all great finishers have done a little bit of composure,
09:13I keep saying it at the final minute,
09:16and he just showed it there.
09:19Well, if you like this kind of thing,
09:20two minutes and six seconds between the goals,
09:23here's Antoine Griezmann,
09:24the first time they've had the ball
09:25and Atletico Madrid get themselves a corner at the cup end,
09:29but you can't start a Champions League league phase
09:31any better than they've done tonight, Liverpool.
09:34No, a remarkable start, absolutely remarkable.
09:38If the first one might have had a hint of fortune,
09:42the second one was brilliant.
09:43So the centre-backs, Lenormand and Longley have gone up there,
09:50and that's straightforward for Alisson.
09:56Liverpool, you sense, have a real taste for it tonight.
10:01Sir Bosley powering through.
10:03That's good defending and important defending
10:05for Atletico Madrid by Conor Gallagher.
10:07Yeah, but it was slack.
10:10It was, it's real in with Gallagher,
10:11it was a slack pass.
10:12With a lot of momentum on that attack there, Liverpool.
10:22It's the ninth game between the teams who last met in 2021,
10:25both teams have three wins apiece,
10:27and Atletico Madrid have won here.
10:29It was the final game before lockdown in 2020
10:31when the Spaniards scored three goals in extra time
10:34to knock Liverpool out,
10:35but that feels like a long time ago,
10:36the way that Liverpool have started.
10:38Lovely turn there by Ryan Gravenberg
10:40and the free kick conceded by Conor Gallagher.
10:43There's so much confidence in the Liverpool team.
10:45What a take it is for Gravenberg.
10:48Lucky not getting a yellow card here.
10:49Look at the take here.
10:50Let's sit through on a beautiful touch.
10:53Normal circumstances, it's yellow card,
10:54but what a turn.
10:55What a turn.
10:56Ibrahima Camate, Dominic Siposlai.
11:09They're so deep, Atletico Madrid,
11:11it's just allowing Liverpool to do what they like with them at the moment.
11:13There's Cody Gakpo, and now Robertson.
11:21Is there any sympathy tonight for Hugo Ekotique,
11:24the fact that he's on the bench and Ralejander Isak's starving?
11:27Yes, yes, but I would imagine he better get used to it a little bit.
11:33Eyes make one or two others.
11:35Absolutely.
11:35Eyes make one or two others.
11:37Florian Wurtz finds a bit of space,
11:39Isak then slightly heavy on the full-back towards Ryan Gravenberg,
11:42but I think everything Isak does tonight, they'll applaud in here.
11:45Yeah.
11:49Here we see it.
11:52So it's Robertson on to the defender,
11:53so you will give it to Robertson based on that.
11:57I'm taking a good spot for hitting the defender though, no?
12:00Oh, yeah.
12:01Listen, you don't miss much.
12:03I can't say the same about myself, but you don't miss much.
12:06No, that man's getting the goal.
12:08I wouldn't be allowed back North of Carlyle if I didn't give him it.
12:16That's it, Giuliano Simeone,
12:19so understandably Dad Diego not happy.
12:23The arm comes across, doesn't it?
12:25It's his 744th game with the athletic head coach tonight.
12:37Not surprising the most ever for a coach at the club.
12:39He's won seven major trophies during his time in Madrid.
12:44His team are in an early hole here though, against Liverpool.
12:47Nicholas Gonzalez, and now Pablo Barrios.
12:57I must say I was a bit surprised when Koke's name
12:59wasn't in the team, just for that experience away from home.
13:05I was too though.
13:06Turned around the corner.
13:14And Llorente in and the free kick.
13:16And it's going to be given to Atletico Madrid for the foul by Subosla.
13:19Nice pass as a player down the right-hand side from Atletico there.
13:24Lovely ball, as you said, around the corner from McGregor.
13:28McGregor? Gallagher?
13:29Where McGregor came from?
13:30You've got Scots on the game.
13:41The fact that Robertson scores completely scrambled you.
13:43You took the one's in my mood.
13:46There's Florian Burns for Liverpool.
13:48Ran into Conor Gallagher over there.
13:49Conor McGregor, tell me where you want to do it.
13:51I think we've won all now after the bandage fiasco with Bilbao last night.
14:01I'll give you that, an equaliser.
14:02No harm in that.
14:05They have struggled against English teams in recent times.
14:09Atletico Madrid.
14:10They've only won one of their last eight against English opposition.
14:14Liverpool were perfect in the league phase at Anfield in this competition last season.
14:19I'll tell you, Fletch, they're 2-0 victory at the weekend aside.
14:23They've had a poor start, really.
14:25Two points in three games.
14:30Just starting to see slightly more of the ball, having been swamped early on by Liverpool.
14:36Salah providing the pressure, Oblak launching the ball away.
14:41Virgil van Dijk pushing it down to Robertson.
14:44Yeah, well that would suit Liverpool all day, wouldn't it?
14:47Four blacks and they kick it long.
14:49Two centre-backs, Van Dijk and Canati will mop it up.
14:54There's the birthday boy, Arne Slott.
14:56His first Champions League defeat as a coach was against Atletico Madrid
14:59when he was the Feyenoord manager in October 2023.
15:03This side off to the perfect start.
15:05Tonight with the Robertson goal and then the Salah goal.
15:08Here's Subotlai.
15:09Showing great energy in central midfield already tonight.
15:12The Hungarian, Isak, little step over, sliding the ball in, Gallagher was there.
15:16Gakpo trying to turn.
15:18And in the end they can get it away through Nicolas Gonzalez.
15:21And it's a good run by him, although Van Dijk across to use the shoulder to great effect.
15:27Thou shall not pass, said Virgil van Dijk.
15:30Great strength, wasn't it?
15:35Jeremy Frimpop.
15:37Over goes Jeremy Frimpop, no foul, referee was right there.
15:41He's not having it at ref, is he?
15:42Again, we saw it last night, nothing we saw a referee that was willing to let things go.
15:51And we enjoyed that performance, so if we get to see him again tonight we'll have no complaints.
15:57This is Javier Gallagher, who's starting at left back and now Conor Calica.
16:03Manfield in full voice.
16:12room for Gallagher to run into, he's got Gonzalez ahead of him here, put it there from Canata.
16:32Good touch, wasn't it?
16:42Alexander Isak tonight becomes the second Swedish player to play for Liverpool, the previous one.
16:51Glenn Hussein, who you played against, the Italian 90, I'm told.
16:54Yeah, absolutely.
16:59He's going absolutely berserk down there, Simeone.
17:03Grieseman takes the corner, Van Dijk heads it away.
17:06Doesn't take a great deal to get the fuse running down, does it?
17:09No.
17:12Antoine Grieseman's cross and that's straight into the gloves of Alisson.
17:24Just looking at the value of the centre-half there that goes and attacks.
17:27Cross balls, Van Dijk brilliant there.
17:42This is Giacomo Raspidori, it's his first start tonight for Atletico Madrid, so a big night for him.
17:54Number four pouncing on that little wax play from Atletico Madrid and now Gakpo.
17:59That's Lenormand, the Spanish international who came across and won it back, and now Grieseman's away.
18:07What a lovely little pass that was from Florian, but see, I've done.
18:11Manus, a fabulous little pass.
18:14Couldn't have been any more than a foot to tell you the truth.
18:17Raspidori plays it here to Simeone.
18:26And that's Tain.
18:27From the Italian international.
18:33This might interest you, Ali, it's the fastest Liverpool have ever scored two goals in a European game.
18:39They've never been two up this early in any European match in club history.
18:47Come flying out the blocks, don't they?
18:49Absolutely.
18:51I must say, the way that Salah took that goal was so impressive, wasn't it?
18:54The way he showed his strength and balance.
18:55He knew.
18:55Yeah.
18:56It's just a perfect example of a forward putting their body in front of the defender,
19:01protecting the ball to allow him to finish.
19:05Simeone threads it in, Gallagher then delivers a good cross,
19:08and there was only Frimpong in there, Raspidori with the layoff,
19:11and eventually away by Gravenberg,
19:13but not a great deal wrong with the build-up play there from Atletico Madrid.
19:16And a lovely little ball from Gallagher, wasn't it?
19:28They're polar opposites, aren't they, those two?
19:31I mean, he's as cool as he's a cucumber, isn't he?
19:32He's on a slot most of the time,
19:34and then Simeone's like a bottle of fizzy pop,
19:35but he's been shaking up for ten minutes.
19:39Yeah, you're not wrong.
19:46Both excellent at their job, mind.
19:48Absolutely.
19:49Absolutely.
19:49It's Ryan Gravenberg.
20:10I don't think this caught the eye from a Liverpool's perspective,
20:12apart from the goals.
20:13It's the running through midfield of Suboslay tonight,
20:15full of energy and power in there.
20:17Yeah, he's got a lot of freedom to do that, hasn't he?
20:24Particularly the way that Atletico Madrid have set up,
20:27and allow him to do that.
20:32Looked like it's straight to Frimpong.
20:41Here's Ryan Gravenberg and now Suboslay.
20:43Robertson.
20:55Robertson.
20:56.
21:11Florian Wurtz, Isak on to Gakpo, the collision with Lenormand.
21:20The defending done there by Llorente, scored twice the last time he came here.
21:25Parcos Llorente, two goals that eventually saw Liverpool go out.
21:33He's the right-back in this defensively set-up Atletico Madrid team,
21:38they had the opportunity to counter there if Raspidori could have gone on to it,
21:41but Gravenberg, as he does so well for Liverpool, was able to pick up the pieces.
21:45He got a little bit of a fright, didn't he?
21:47Because he thought he had a centre-back behind them.
21:50He had to react to that, but he didn't, but he did well.
21:55.
22:00Approaching 20 minutes, it's Diogo Jota's song that's being sung by everybody inside Atfield.
22:05.
22:10Never far from the Liverpool supporters' thoughts.
22:13Cody Gakpo.
22:18Here it goes from Robertson, nice touch as well from the Atletico Madrid fans who are torn at this moment as well.
22:25.
22:32That's excellent from Sobrizai again.
22:34He just comes a blind side of Griezmann there, and dispossession of a great switch of play also.
22:39Oh, Salah.
22:41Cutting in.
22:42Hitting the shuttle!
22:43Climb it!
22:44He was at full stretch O'Black, and how many times down the years have we seen Salah cut in like that and fly in the top corner?
22:51This is the angle here.
22:52That's brilliant.
22:54Let's not get everybody on, you and I were saying he's a required start to the season.
22:59Well, I was about to say that.
23:01There's been a bit of lethargy about his play, I think.
23:04He's been on the outside looking in, but tonight it seems like he's got that real desire to stamp himself on this match.
23:11I don't think we're wrong saying it, to be quite honest here, but he certainly started this opening 20 minutes or so completely differently.
23:21There goes Llorente, played it now to Simeone, and they're defending them there by Canate, who came from one side to the other to block it.
23:31Faurio Burts beaten to the ball by Pablo Barrios.
23:41Faurio Burtsied.
23:5518,000 in by Gulligan, Llorente.
24:02Lovely touch inside the area by Simeone, and he pulled it back to what he thought was going to be a good area but Canate was there again.
24:10Superb touch, and a good ball, he cuts it back towards the penalty spot.
24:17Canatti's all over it, but what a lovely touch.
24:20We've only got another look at it, Llorente plays the ball in.
24:23That's a fabulous touch, it really is.
24:33Chelsea are a goal down in Munich against Bayern,
24:35Trevor Chalabar with an own goal, Gravenberg building up ahead of steam,
24:39that was a clean tackle though, to dispossess him.
24:42Very impressive break from Gravenberg, it really was.
24:56That's in behind Robertson, and Simeone on the ball again,
25:00and he pulls it back here to Griezmann, Griezmann with the touch, Gravenberg the defender,
25:05and that was on its way towards Gonzalez in the middle,
25:08before Liverpool dealt with it.
25:09Nah, it's poor, I can tell you that it's poor,
25:11the ball's got to get across earlier, it really has.
25:14Gonzalez was coming into the back post, he got goalsider Frimpong,
25:18who perhaps just nodded off, wrong option.
25:23Galan taking on Frimpong, and that was defended well by Jeremy Frimpong for Liverpool.
25:29He's been some player, hasn't he, for Atletico Madrid, Antoine Griezmann,
25:42the 500th game, or 450th game for the club tonight, he's got 198 goals for them.
25:52It's a team header by Clement Longway that was easily dealt with by Alisson.
25:57Simeone's been the bright spot, hasn't he, down this side for Atletico Madrid.
26:13He's only 22, he plays for Argentina, born in Rome when his dad Diego was at Lazio,
26:19raised in Argentina, and he started well down the right-hand side, it's good delivery from him.
26:26Do you think that would put any pressure on him in terms of what nation to play for?
26:31Every chance.
26:33Dominic Alligate, defended there by Blandaic, I don't think it would have been a discussion,
26:37that's for certain.
26:40He'd be a brave lad, wouldn't he, Simeone Junior, if he said,
26:43you know what, Dad, I might play for Italy.
26:47Argentina through and through.
27:02Liverpool defending a proud record on opening night here at Anfield,
27:06they've never lost an opener on this pitch in the Champions League, it's the
27:09eighth time that they've started their campaign at home and they're off to a really good start
27:13with 25 minutes play.
27:18Defensive header in there for Isak and then back in by Llorente,
27:21and now there is the possibility of a break if Frimpong could get there, but that was
27:26good defending by Pablo Barrios.
27:30Now Griezmann, just settled down a bit now Atletico Madrid,
27:33taking the game a little bit to Liverpool and asking one or two questions.
27:43Gonzalez has to be special to beat Alisson from there.
27:59Let's have a look at this goal again, Ali, because he took it brilliantly.
28:02Yeah, but look at the giving and go, the pass here, that into the area, then he uses his body
28:08superbly well, and when he opens it up, Dan, you just know that's his finish.
28:13Low across the face of the goalkeeper, side foot away from him, magnificent, it really is.
28:20Coming in off that side, a little give and go.
28:24He's got a number of Champions League and European records for Liverpool,
28:28and he's moved a step nearer another one tonight, it's now second overall all-time
28:32for games played in the Champions League for Liverpool, he's gone past Steven Gerrard,
28:36only Jamie Carragher is ahead of him, and he should pass Carragher barring injury this season,
28:41I think he's six behind as it stands.
28:44Remarkable, isn't it? It is, yeah. It's not just the output, it's the longevity as well, isn't it?
28:59If you heard a loud bang, that might well have been Ali's chair just moving in a manner that he
29:05didn't want it to. Are you OK? The good news is I'm fine, let's carry on.
29:09OK.
29:11He's said about that incident to Bertha, I feel.
29:21So 2-0 to Liverpool, those two early goals inside seven minutes,
29:25the first one for Robertson via the deflection and then the Salah goal that we've just showed you.
29:33I would make the point as well that he justifies his place in the team,
29:36I don't think Kerkhez has started particularly well, so Robertson back in on merit.
29:41I'm not surprised to see him in there at all, because you can guarantee one thing about
29:46Andy Robertson, and the fact of the matter is when he's out of the team he will be training
29:50his socks off to get back into that side, and he's probably in merit because Kerkhez really
29:55hasn't been going yet.
30:02Galland just a fraction quicker there than Mo Salah, this is Gallagher.
30:06trying to slip that in behind for Simeone's run.
30:16Allyson looking to give Salah one to chase, but long lay was across, then Isak.
30:24But it's good play and it's different, the switch mix up a little bit, he goes long,
30:33he forces the defender to go back away, make a header, then the important thing is picking
30:37up the next ball, and they do that.
30:39I've said it for a long, long time, the one thing about Liverpool, yes they can pass the
30:47ball with some great footballers, but the mix up as well is not better than Andy, I think, Dan.
30:53Bayern Munich have doubled their lead, so Bayern Munich 2, Chelsea 0, Harry Kane with a penalty,
30:58Trevor Chalabar with the own goal, so tough night so far in Munich for Chelsea.
31:04Just back to Isak, I think the big question tonight is how long he plays, Arnaz Lotz said 45 minutes,
31:09maybe a bit more, so with the Merseyside derby to come at the weekend and we'll bring you that game
31:14on TNT Sports, it'll be fascinating to see how long he leaves him out there tonight.
31:17Well it's an interesting one, there's discussions before the game whether we thought he would start or
31:21have come off the bench, footage starting, maybe got an hour, 55 minutes.
31:33Gallagher plays it out there to Nicolas Gonzalez, who sends in the cross which Canate heads away.
31:44Supported now on that side by Javier Galan, Griezmann, first time in, it wasn't bad again from
31:50Griezmann, was it? It's a great ball.
31:54The thing that was important about the defence, it was right on the centre forward,
31:57I think maybe even Raspidori when it came in, but it's a lovely little ball from Griezmann.
32:02Now Miss Alvarez tonight of course is such an important player for them.
32:10Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, so 2-1 now, so goals are plenty in Munich so far tonight,
32:15Chelsea with two down but Cole Palmer a minute after the Harry Kane penalty has made it 2-1.
32:29Full credit to Atletico Madrid, I mean they could have buckled having gone
32:322-0 down after six minutes, but since that goal they've had more of the ball than Liverpool.
32:36Yeah, they have. They've weathered the storm, there's no doubt about that, having said that,
32:41Liverpool have still seemed dangerous as we're about to see.
32:44Isak to Salah, Isak's been caught, Salah hits it, and Oblak saves it.
32:50The concern though is this challenge on Isak, and he's in quite a bit of pain as you can see.
33:00Nah, he gets one, doesn't he?
33:04It's one of these balls, when it breaks to him here, he knows, he knows he's got to get it,
33:11and he's got to get it first, but he knows he's going to collect one at the same time.
33:14That's exactly what happens, just gets here first, the tackle comes in.
33:18Le Normand, I think it is, yep.
33:23Stands on his right foot, doesn't he?
33:24It's a challenge that led to a yellow card for Robin Le Normand,
33:29who was a teammate of Isak's at Real Sociedad,
33:32so maybe they weren't exactly buzz and bullies in the jersey moon.
33:35Forgot about that.
33:35Yeah.
33:42Just to confirm that we've got Liverpool against Everton for you from 11 o'clock on Saturday morning,
33:47TNT Sports 1, we'll start with early kick-off, you can see it on Discovery Plus as well.
33:52What about tomorrow night, St James's Park, Newcastle against Barcelona from 7 o'clock,
33:57TNT Sports 1, and on TNT Sports 2 at the same time, Kevin De Bruyne back in Manchester,
34:02at Manchester City, as City take on Napoli.
34:06Now, the game's available on Discovery Plus as well.
34:09Here's Griezmann for Atletico Madrid, and now Simeone, and there's Dominic Saboslay for Liverpool.
34:22Very much looking forward to tomorrow night, that's going to be quite some atmosphere at St James's, isn't it?
34:26What a week you and I have had.
34:31Llorente with the pass, Raspidori trying to cross it,
34:34Saboslay working hard defensively again there for Liverpool.
34:40That's a foul on Mo Salah.
34:41Well, again, it's great use of the body, the ball's in the air coming up to you on Fletch,
34:45and look, he just backs in, gets himself out a little bit of a half-yard,
34:49comes off to take it, and then he's fouled, isn't he?
34:52Javier Galland is the player who's going to need patching up,
35:08gives me a chance to tell you that we're fast approaching the new season of Gallagher Premiership Rugby,
35:12and once again, TNT Sports will bring you every match live.
35:15Round one kicks off next week from the 25th to the 28th of September,
35:21so make sure you're with us for the rugby.
35:31It's a different athletic team these days, the rock-solid defence is no more,
35:36that absolute desire under Simeone that you won't pass.
35:41I mean, they still tactically play in a very similar manner,
35:44but they've just not got the characters and the personnel that they had to really make it work.
35:48Well, they were brilliant at it, weren't they?
35:51I'm not sure they were too easy in the eye, I've got to say, Dan,
35:54but they were very, very effective at what they did.
35:58Good enough to win them a couple of La Liga titles and a couple of appearances in Champions League finals,
36:02Gravenberg on towards Isak, breaks now for Canate, and it goes to Frimpong,
36:07who can charge towards the byline and win Liverpool the corner.
36:13Would also suggest you extremely unlucky in the Champions League.
36:16He's given a penalty.
36:18He's given a penalty.
36:20He's given a penalty for a handball against Clement Longline.
36:24And I wonder whether the assistant gave that, you know.
36:27Give us your judgment here, Ali.
36:39You really want me to tell you?
36:40Yeah.
36:41Go on with the game.
36:42I know.
36:45I'm not even sure it hits his hand, does it?
36:47That's absolute nonsense, just go on with the game.
36:49Marco D'Adello is the video assistant.
36:52That's actually embarrassing.
36:56Yeah.
36:57Yeah.
36:58I mean, that's shocking.
37:01I mean, the referee hasn't given...
37:02I'm guessing that somebody's spoken to the referee.
37:04He has to.
37:05Right.
37:06So somebody has...
37:08I don't know.
37:08He's got to look at it, surely.
37:14I mean, there is absolutely nothing that Longline can do there.
37:17So I'm suggesting that somebody has...
37:19Has the referee made a clear and obvious error there?
37:23Well, I think he probably has.
37:26And by the way, he's got to come and have a look.
37:31Sense may well prevail.
37:32I would hope so.
37:34I'm fascinated to see where it actually...
37:36Who's seen?
37:37I mean, does he barely glance his film?
37:40I'm not sure.
37:41I don't know.
37:47Yeah, time to do the decent thing.
37:48No penalty.
37:50Absurd idea in the first place.
37:53But do you know what the bizarre and worrying thing is?
37:57Our VAR system, but I mean, the threshold is so much higher
38:01in the Premier League than the Champions League.
38:02That one in Paris last year will never be beat, or was it last year?
38:05Yeah, the year before, yeah.
38:06Never be beat.
38:07It's a corner to Liverpool, and they've got Canarte and Van Dijk in there.
38:11It's a corner taken by Florian Virts, and Van Dijk was running at that.
38:26It was an important header by Gonzalez.
38:28Good header, good defensive header.
38:31He's back on the ball now.
38:34Giving it away, though, to Ryan Gravenberg, and now Dominic Suboslai.
38:41I'm just about to ask you the question, if it was a Liverpool penalty,
38:44would you let Isak take it to get a goal?
38:48Whether I would let him take it is one thing,
38:50but I don't think Salah would let him take it.
38:53It's all right me letting him take it up here,
38:55but I don't think Salah would let him take it.
38:57Well, I think you're probably right.
39:01Lovely football from Liverpool against Cody Gatpo.
39:06Dominic Suboslai wanted somebody to his right there just to keep it moving, didn't he?
39:11He certainly did.
39:21So again, that's that.
39:22Old Black forced into the kick, which is just...
39:25Lovely touch by Salah to Florian Virts.
39:29Decent defending over there by Javier Galland.
39:31Just suits the two Liverpool centre-backs again.
39:34And the boot from Antoine Griezmann.
39:37And the boot from Antoine Griezmann.
39:50A little stub of the toe from Raspidori.
39:58A little stub of the toe from Raspidori.
40:00A little stub of the toe from Raspidori.
40:04Clips it forward like that effortlessly, doesn't he?
40:20Van Dijk.
40:21Hardly any back lift whatsoever.
40:22Fantastic ball.
40:23That's an obstruction for you, surely.
40:24Oh, he's not going out of there.
40:25I'm a little bit disappointed, though, that Gatpo went looking for it,
40:28because he got the full-back in a really good position there.
40:30I still think it'll make him in a free kick.
40:32Yeah, here's Birts.
40:33In it goes to Isak, who looks to turn and shoot!
40:34Well, that's his first attempt in Liverpool Red.
40:36No back left required.
40:37See another look at this, takes it in the half-turn.
40:39Nah, I don't mind that, you know.
40:40Just gets out of his feet.
40:41He's not a lot of effort, but he's not a lot of effort.
40:42He's not a lot of effort, but he's not a good guy.
40:43I'm a little bit disappointed that Gatpo went looking for it,
40:44because he got the full-back in a really good position there.
40:45I still think it might have been a free kick.
40:47Here's Birts.
40:49And it goes to Isak, who looks to turn and shoot!
40:52Well, that's his first attempt in Liverpool Red.
40:54No back left required.
40:59You see another look at this, takes it in the half-turn.
41:03Nah, I don't mind that, you know.
41:05Just gets out of his feet.
41:07He's not got a lot of room to play with, still on his feet.
41:09See what he's trying to do.
41:10That lack of back lift is Fowler-esque.
41:12Yes.
41:13Having said that, Robbie would have hit the target.
41:15There's Salah, he hits the target.
41:17And it's saved by Oblak.
41:19Big smile on his face.
41:23He just tried to redirect it, didn't he?
41:25I think to the goalkeeper's top right-hand corner.
41:27Straight at him.
41:31Boy, he's crossed on that side of the titch.
41:35That's a scoreline that makes good reading to Liverpool.
41:39Liverpool two, has he go Madrid nil.
41:41Those two early goals from Robinson and Salah.
41:43Gravenberg.
41:44Confidence from Canate.
41:45Applause from his captain Van Dijk, who had time to clap before the ball got there.
41:49What about that for a touch?
41:50Here's Furtz.
41:51And now Gakpo.
41:52Isak was the target.
41:53Space now for Ryan Gravenberg.
41:54And Liverpool.
41:55Little step over from Sir Bosley.
41:56But it's well read by Galland.
41:57But the Hungarian straight there.
41:58And running still.
41:59And providing the cross.
42:00Which is cleared away by him.
42:01He's got a goal for those two early goals from Robinson and Salah.
42:05Gravenberg.
42:06Confidence from Canate.
42:07Applause as well from his captain Van Dijk, who had time to clap before the ball got there.
42:11What about that for a touch?
42:12Here's Furtz.
42:13Furtz.
42:14And now Gakpo.
42:15Isak was the target.
42:16Space now for Ryan Gravenberg and Liverpool.
42:19Little step over from Sir Bosley.
42:21But it's well read by Galland.
42:22But the Hungarian straight there.
42:24And running still.
42:25And providing the cross.
42:27Which is cleared away by Robin Lenormand.
42:33Robertson.
42:35Furtz.
42:37Isak.
42:38Space.
42:39Shot.
42:40Saved by Oblak.
42:41Desperate for a goal tonight.
42:42I think everybody in here who's not wearing an Atletico Madrid scarf wants it to score as well.
42:47There's just an arm on him that probably knocks him off balance ever so slightly.
42:52There.
42:53Yeah.
42:54Lundermand's got an arm on him, you can see he's pushing him a little bit.
42:57He's got a hold of his left arm, which stops Isak getting the power that he wanted.
43:08I think he's having an excellent game tonight, Gravenberg, isn't he?
43:11Superb.
43:12Superb.
43:13He's fantastic.
43:14Absolutely superb he's been.
43:15Barrios plays it through.
43:19Griezmann was the runner.
43:20And that's well read by Alisson.
43:21And that's well read by Alisson.
43:40Three and a half minutes to play in the first half.
43:42The first half where the possession has been relatively even, they've had plenty of the ball.
43:47Atletico Madrid, but those two early goals, two sucker punches inside seven minutes have Liverpool with a distinct advantage.
43:54Burtz away from Barrios, got a space ahead of him now and he's got Isak as well.
44:00Isak back to Burtz, around the goalkeeper, missed kick from Trim Pong, should have been 3-0.
44:06Oh, what a move.
44:07Brilliant from Burtz and great link-up play again.
44:10Isak almost won it back in there as well.
44:12I think he was thinking of it going down, you know, when Oblak came out, Fletch.
44:18Terrific football.
44:19What about that for a roar?
44:21Here it is again, Alec.
44:23Brilliant from Burtz, fires it in, keeps going, whooping us for a wee pass, lovely.
44:27It was a great move, wasn't it?
44:34If anything, he probably just takes it a little too much to the right-hand side there,
44:38or he'd have stopped himself getting an absolute tap in, but a great little move.
44:43Not quite the air shot from Frim Pong, but pretty close.
44:50It's something Arnest Lok will like to see, though, three of his new signings all involved in the same move.
44:54Yeah.
44:55Excellent for Isak, defending them there by Barrios.
45:07Burtz putting pressure on Oblak, and then makes a bit of a hash of the clearance.
45:20It's a boss line.
45:25Robinson to Ryan Grappenberg, nobody there this time.
45:37Just got a lovely balance in Liverpool, haven't they?
45:41González with time to turn, and then Galland on the run. I think he's offside.
45:51I used to go on it earlier, that's why.
45:53Yeah.
45:54Do you know, it's interesting, you've just talked about the balance Liverpool have got in midfield.
45:58You waxed lyrical last night about the depth of the Arsenal squad these days, and you weren't alone.
46:04A lot of people spoke about that on reflection after last night.
46:06But when you look at what Liverpool have got available to them tonight on the bench, and they've still got the likes of Curtis Jones not available tonight, so it's a really strong, deep group now that Liverpool have got as well.
46:20Great window, Arsenal, great window. Forrest, great window. Nobody's standing still.
46:30Cody Gatto dispossessed by Barrios.
46:36There is one difference between the two, Liverpool and Arsenal in terms of depth, it might be at centre-half where they've got an embarrassed bit of britches.
46:42Yeah.
46:43Arsenal now.
46:44Simeone's cross, he's looking the most likely to make something happen for them tonight.
46:49He has on the right-hand side, and I think you're right in mentioning him, you're obviously talking about Mascara who's come in as centre-back for Arsenal, he has looked apart since he came on in the first half here, in fact, wasn't it?
47:00Capier can play there as well, can't he? Timber, if you need him, can play as a centre-back also.
47:05So four minutes of additional time, and a corner here for Antoine Griezmann and Atletico Madrid.
47:13And if he is going to score tonight, Isak, it might have to be at the cop end in the second half, which would be nice.
47:27I don't think he'd be too disappointed with that, would he? No.
47:32I also wouldn't be majorly surprised if he didn't come out for the second half, because there's been this, I mean, slots that I know he can play 45 minutes and maybe a bit more, but we'll see what he thinks.
47:42Based on his plans for Saturday. Absolutely, and you would think, you know, for somebody that hasn't played a lot of football last season, what has he had, 18 minutes for Sweden against Kosovo?
47:51You would think, I'm thinking to myself, you'd maybe give him another 50 minutes, give him an hour, but at the same time, if he hasn't played, probably the sensible thing you do is take him off at half-time.
48:00I think it's TK looking on, we'll see him at some point tonight, there's no doubt about that. He's made a very impactful start to life at Liverpool.
48:09..
48:25Having a gallant, an late Trennan long, like Robin Le Normand.
48:32Simeone now finding Llorente, and they've got Raspidori in the middle, that's defended by Canate and then cleared by Robertson.
48:58Simeone.
49:02Pablo Barrios, no offside here against Raspidori, they've got plenty forward here, Llorente's one of them and he's scored.
49:29Well the last time he was here he scored two goals to break Liverpool's hearts and he scored on the stroke of half-time to drag Atletico back into the game.
49:39I'll need another look at Raspidori's position here, my initial reaction was he was offside Fletch, but the lines were correctly, let him go.
49:49He'll have a look I think. Lovely finish though, just two pokes away, here we see the run, has he timed it perfectly?
49:57He's absolutely timed it perfectly, Canate's playing him onside. Canate's playing him onside.
50:03Is he in the... yeah, I don't think this will count, is he in the goalkeeper's line?
50:09He might be, you know. Well they're checking it. Yeah, that's the only thing, is he in the goalkeeper's line?
50:15You could argue from that angle he might be, you know.
50:18He's through Canate's legs doesn't it, he's right in front of him, I'll be surprised if this is given.
50:27Check over, and the goal stands, it's 2-1, Simeone celebrates and Llorente scores again for Atletico Madrid at Anfield and that just changes the balance of things heading into half-time.
50:37Of course it does, and do you know something, you can argue about whether he's in front of the goalkeeper or not,
50:43but them actually scoring isn't that big a surprise, Fletch, because since they've gone 2-0 down they've got a fair bit of possession,
50:50and they've created one or two openings. What a ball that is again.
50:55A super take as well by Gravenberg, a yellow card straight away for Longley.
51:00A painful one as well for the Dutchman, and that's both centre-backs of Atletico Madrid on a yellow.
51:16Longley has got Premier League experience with Spurs and Aston Villa, he was on loan at Atletico Madrid last season, made that deal permanent in the summer.
51:25I can tell you right now, Arma Slot's having a look at that goal, I can tell you right now he's having a look at the position of Griezmann,
51:31there's no doubt about that, one for the boys to have a chat about at half-time.
51:38Dominik Sir Bosleiter, Ryan Gravenberg, lifted in towards Virgil van Dijk who's having to wrestle for space,
51:45and there's the half-time whistle, well Liverpool started like a train, didn't they?
51:49Two goals inside, seven minutes, the Salah free-kick deflected in off Robertson,
51:54the first time he'd scored in the Champions League for almost six years,
51:58and then Salah, wonderful poise, wonderful balance and strength,
52:02and a clinical finish, the 250th goal he scored in English football,
52:06but then right on the stroke of half-time, Raspidori beating the offside trap to set up Llorente,
52:12which halves Liverpool's lead, chances for Isak in the first half, but he didn't score,
52:18half-time analysis from Steve and Michael with Laura,
52:21half-time at Anfield, it's Liverpool two, Atletico Madrid one.
