00:00So I have with me Lord Rami Rangir. He is a British Indian businessman and a conservative
00:21politician and the member of House of Lords in UK and he's joining me today to have a discussion
00:26on anti-immigration protests that recently took place in UK. Sir very warm welcome to
00:32Asianet News and thank you so much for speaking with us. Yeah thank you for inviting me. Sir you
00:38yourself have a personal journey as a refugee and as an immigrant in UK. What do you make of
00:45the anti-immigration protests that took place in UK? You know Britain has always been welcoming
00:52country for people who want to come, who want to work hard, realize their dreams and ambitions
00:59and become an asset. So there is no problem there. It has been inviting refugees and people in need
01:06right from the day you can remember. You know lots of people even the Jewish people came lots of people
01:13from Africa came you know especially the Ugandan Asian came to this country who were in trouble.
01:19So Britain is an open door policy that you if you generally generally need help Britain will not
01:26refuse it's a very tolerant country civilized country and you can see the very fact the immigrants have
01:32done so well they just demonstrate the British sense of fair play and tolerance. You know prejudice is
01:40always you know so we have to ignore the negativity. Having said that in Britain I've been here 55 years
01:51Britain accept diversity, respect diversity and protect diversity through laws. There are laws of
01:58against discrimination of any kind especially against you know race, religion, gender. So therefore it's a very
02:06multi-cultural country where there are mosques, temples, there are gurdwaras, there are synagogues,
02:12there are churches. So it's all good but recently people have found out that they can abuse the hospitality of
02:22this great country by just coming in boats and you know because the process in this country is so long to
02:30ensure that no one is at a disadvantage and no injustice is not done to anyone. So they come here and they
02:38stay for many many years because you know by the time the people of the process the situation changed,
02:47you know they have children, they have their roots in this country. So therefore it is now people have had
02:54enough the British people that those people who are illegal immigrants, those who are coming through
03:00boats by paying the people smugglers to come to this country who know the system and who can abuse the
03:07system. So therefore the moral of the story is that you know the enough is enough because we do not have
03:13enough housing, we do not have enough social services, the facility to cope with influx of so many migrants
03:22coming in unchecked. So therefore the people are and you know some of the migrants are not even
03:29integrating and you know there are some people who come to this country to make their lives and some
03:34people come here to convert you and that's why you know people are really fed up that you know you come
03:40to this country because this country was successful. Why do you want to change the institution which has
03:47served this country for years and centuries? So therefore there are wrong kind of immigrant
03:52also are bringing this negative response from the locals. So I think the leaders of the countries
04:02from where these people come they will speak to their community and they will tell them that if
04:08you come to this any country you go to abide by the rules you have to live by their standard and not to
04:14change it and you know people resent it even I resent you know if somebody was to come and change the
04:19United Kingdom because that is not the country I came to you know so therefore we have now the reaction
04:28of excessive migration and the welfare system which provides safety net to people and the people
04:38have come to abuse it and you know so many of them. So what do you think what do you make of the
04:45government's policy uh the Labour Party's policy on immigration because there is a lot of discontent
04:51with the policy itself? Well unfortunately Labour Party has always gained from the migrants you know
04:58they come they're struggling they want to vote for the party which offers them benefit and the Labour Party
05:04does offer more benefit uh by punishing the risk taker the one who work hard they sacrifice their lives to
05:13building their business and then Labour Party will come and take a claw their you know life saving so
05:22that's why the Labour Party has been soft with immigrants but now I think the balance has tilted
05:28whether you're Labour whether you're Conservative you can no longer uh carry on with the policies
05:35a few years back because there's a backlash you know there's a third party emerge I don't know whether you
05:41know you know about reform party and they have captured the imagination of people and they really
05:48made a huge dent to the Conservative voters because the Conservative was in power and during their power
05:54the immigrants were you know migrants were coming in a lot of numbers they couldn't and you know
05:59politicians politicians also put their own agenda above else because there was a policy to send these people
06:07to Rwanda to have their application process but that then they had these challenges in courts Supreme
06:14Court the House of Lords and they stopped that scheme if he was to go ahead uh I think the Labour is
06:21not trying to take it to make a speech where they will take people to either Albania or some other country
06:28but that's the only way because you know you can't bring them to this country where there's always resentment
06:35and that resentment can boil over and people like me who have built up a successful business and
06:42been an asset and contribute a lot to this country ever since I arrived will also be treated in the same
06:49manner I also can have the uh repercussion like me not just me but there are many people I mean the richest
06:56man in the United Kingdom is of course a Hindu just and then Lakshmi so there's some successful people
07:04running businesses very very successful you know we are product of secular democratic country with
07:10rule of law at the heart so we accept their values because they are similar value to our values but
07:15there are some people who come with a different values and they need to change because that value
07:20which they were practicing has not brought them success so why come and make us backward to the
07:26the country you left behind so I think there's a very big uh debate going on and I appeal to all the leaders
07:33that they have to put the interest of people who are already here you know who have already worked
07:38hard they they have demonstrated their loyalty to the king and the country they have become an asset
07:44they should not face the effect of this mass demonstration you know this is very inconvenient
07:52and it's frightening to us you know that what is going to happen things can go out of hand
07:58so I was coming to that I mean there is a huge concern about if there will be a risk on diaspora
08:04and of course the ethnic minorities who are living in Britain what sort of political representation we
08:11can see in parliament in the coming days will there be anything which will be raised in parliament
08:16regarding that to protect these vulnerable people 100 every politician is of every you know political party
08:25is now is listening to the concern because that is why they're in public life because they want to
08:32serve public and if they ignore they ignore the wishes of the people the concerns of the people
08:40that could backfire on them and on their party so therefore it is you know situation is that if you do not
08:48nip the evil in the bud then you will encourage more and more people to come openly and our race
08:55lesion our social cohesion can be damaged you know beyond repairs and it might take years to repair it
09:02but the in the in the meantime the damage would have been done a lot of people will move from this
09:07country already people are moving because of height higher taxes so therefore now because the crime
09:13in united kingdom is also very high because there's so much freedom and a lot of people are leaving
09:19because of this also and if people keep on coming you know unchecked or unwetted they could be criminal
09:28they could be gangster they were drug dealers whatever and that could affect the fabric of this society
09:34so on social media when these uh anti-immigration protests were taking place on social media there
09:39were a lot of commentary which had an undertone of being xenophobic but at the same time there
09:46were some people who were heard saying uh genuinely showing their concern about how there are a lot of
09:52immigrants in certain sectors like labor sector housing sector uh but at the same time you you can
10:00need to continue to take these immigrants absorb them to progress as a nation i i agree with you because
10:06you know this is a very fair country people also do not want racism to get out of hand because racism
10:13is a cancer you know if because uh if it is not uh checked or controlled or uh then it can really
10:23harm the country as a whole because you know this country is a small country and there's a lot of
10:28people from different countries you know immigrant for nearly 150 countries live here side by side and this
10:34is a very diverse country you know very cosmopolitan city and that can have a negative effect so
10:40therefore people have to really take charge the politician and they have to address the concern of the
10:48vast majority of people who are now you know speak speaking very loudly that enough is enough you have to
10:56stop these both people you have to stop the illegal illegal immigrants who are jumping housing queues who are
11:02getting benefits and who are getting all sorts of facility and then the the person like a pensioner who
11:09has worked all his life to build this country goes without heating bill without a fuel sport for the
11:16winter fuel sport so therefore there are a lot of resentment because people see that these people are
11:22given five or not five or three or four star hotel and they get air conditioning 24 7 heating
11:29food uh on demand you know everything done for them so therefore you know people are really don't amused
