Watch the Game Highlights from Manchester City vs. Napoli, 09/18/2025
Transcript
00:00Three draws, one of which was here in the group stage 14 years ago, very early in
00:07Manchester City's career in this competition, but they lost here 2-1 in
00:12October 2017, to reach that landmark, but none with quite the connections of the
00:22returning Kevin De Bruyne.
00:25All eyes on him.
00:36Well, he said that himself, City will always be his club, and he's sending out to try and
00:42beat them tonight, and he will remember that Manchester City started this first new
00:48structure a year ago, with a 0-0 draw against Italian opposition in Inter, and
00:55Inter side that went on to the final, didn't play particularly well in the final of course,
01:01but put in a very good display here, not just defensively, but caught Man City out on several
01:06occasions on the counter-attack.
01:08Can Napoli do the same?
01:10Certainly got some players to do it.
01:12So we're underway.
01:14A lot of sky-blue light poo around the stadium of course, that's Napoli's local back wider area,
01:26trying to stretch the back line, that's a decent strike from Reiner's.
01:32Two huge goalkeepers here, good strike, hit with power, doesn't quite punch his height.
01:42Distracted a bit by Rasmus Hoyland here, he doesn't come for this one, he has to keep it out,
01:48great save at the end of it, there's the delivery, there's the header, and he gets down very quickly.
01:56Yes, it's Werkema's header, a player who scored in his debut game.
02:10Foden, Von Halle might get there, now the ball was played, says the referee,
02:16who was arriving on the scene but perhaps not with the best angle.
02:19There's all sorts of elements in this. He's booting the ball all the time, it's close.
02:26No wonder Erling Haal, as we say.
02:30There's no covering defender, so it's going to be a red car.
02:36In normal speed it did look like that, Stuart, didn't it?
02:38And the referee has a different angle of course, we're up high looking down.
02:42But the arms are raised in the back line thinking that Doku was offside.
02:52And in goes Erling Haaland, but not number 50 yet.
02:58Red the trajectory of the cross, gets across the defender, she just can't keep it down.
03:04Reinders plays a really good ball into the box.
03:06It's nicely worked, and it's Kuzanov having to cross, and he's going to have a lot of opportunities to do this.
03:17Foden, left foot, good strike, good goalkeeping again.
03:23Rodri, Foden making a run into the centre, switched out to Bernardo Silva, Haaland going for it.
03:30And the shot was from Rodri.
03:36And it came back to him here, Bernardo Silva finding himself back out on this right-hand side.
03:42Clearance is a decent one, and then you can see, as the goalkeeper makes a save, Doku is standing in an offside position.
03:48Good strike from Rodri.
03:51Yeah, if it had gone in, the flag wouldn't have gone up.
03:54Reinders.
03:59Bernardo Silva floats it in, and it needed saving.
04:07O'Reilly again, the player in there.
04:09He's a danger.
04:10He certainly is.
04:13Six foot four, six foot five, and a good jumper.
04:18It's always going to be a threat.
04:21And same, sort of saved by the same post, back by Foden again.
04:25Goalkeeper's in trouble this time, comes out to Bernardo Silva.
04:28Shout for handball against Haaland.
04:33And the referee might have to stop it here.
04:36Well, he is at the moment.
04:38There's Guardiola.
04:39What a good save that was with his bottom hand.
04:43Closing it out, so to speak, in terms of the result.
04:47Rodri lets it run.
04:48Guardiola has a try again.
04:50Milankovic, Savic passing wide, and this time his agility wasn't pulled upon.
04:58He doesn't quite get the bend he was looking for, Guardiola.
05:01Winding up and faking it all by doing that.
05:04Here's Bernardo Silva.
05:05Clever turn, still wants to play with his left foot.
05:10Oh, and it would have been an own goal.
05:13Was it going in?
05:14It certainly seemed to.
05:15Politano can't believe he kept it off the line.
05:18And then you can hardly call it a pass back.
05:25It's not a corner, it's a goal kick.
05:28And Antonio Conte can think now about what he's going to say in this difficult set of circumstances.
05:35He's loved and will continue to be loved.
05:41So, without De Bruyne and, of course, with ten men, there's Nico O'Reilly.
05:48One of the new breed, really, though he's played a lot over the last year or so.
05:53It's a changing scenario for Manchester City.
05:56Rodri, Foden, Haaland!
05:59Brilliantly done.
06:01Needed the elevation.
06:02And he gets to 50 Champions League goals in 49 appearances.
06:09With the kind of touch that Manchester City were looking for in these circumstances.
06:17Proud dad, Alfie, he knows the facts and figures.
06:21What matters to Pep Guardiola is Manchester City one, Napoli nil.
06:26Well, it's taken a long time coming.
06:29We haven't created that many golden opportunities.
06:33There's a little ball played.
06:34What a good finish.
06:35It's a nice little ball played by it.
06:36Do it.
06:40Nadeau Silva.
06:44O'Reilly.
06:47Grinders.
06:48A lovely change of direction by Doku.
06:50He could go all the way here.
06:51He has.
06:56Well, that was down to his speed, his initiative and a wearying defensive line.
07:03That he cut right through and found the finish to match the speed of movement.
07:102-0 Manchester City.
07:12Well, there's always been a question mark.
07:14Is he good in tight areas?
07:16We know he's very good in 1v1 situations when there's space behind the defender.
07:21But this is all about finding space when it's very, very tight and he does it brilliantly.
07:26He just finds himself infield when the ball comes to him.
07:33Gets himself turned there.
07:35Now, takes it one way, takes it the other.
07:38Couldn't really pose any sort of threat going forward.
07:41They were going to have to defend deeply.
07:42Man City took a while to break them down.
07:44But when they did, there was only going to be one winner.
07:47So, disappointing game in the end.
07:49All based on that sending off by Di Lorenzo.
