A public consultation has been launched on preliminary proposals to improve travel on the A454 in Wolverhampton
Transcript
00:00What are the takeaways from what you've spoken about?
00:03It's a lot clearer now than what it was before.
00:06Because, you know, you can read it, you can go on the phone and all the rest of it, log in it all.
00:11Seeing it at the casacters, I've always worked with drawings so I know what I'm doing with them.
00:16And actually it's a lot clearer with that.
00:19It's giving us some insight into it.
00:23Personally, I feel it's a lot of inconvenience for what's going to be a little benefit.
00:33As pedestrians, we're not going to get that much benefit.
00:38Cyclists may do, but I still don't think that they will use it that much.
00:44Not around here.
00:45So in terms of this, you're on this road, you're pedestrians rather than a cyclist?
00:49We are pedestrians.
00:51Right, okay.
00:53And, sort of in its current state, what do you think of the route and the problems that you face on?
00:59Well, put it this way, if we want to get to Wolverhampton, I have to pick me times.
01:05Right.
01:06It's no good going at 9 o'clock in the morning.
01:08And if you get it on the phone that there's something going on on the motorway, don't bother going.
01:13Right.
01:14Don't bother going.
01:15And that's not going to be, that's not going to change for us.
01:18Well, that's going to get worse, not better with us.
01:20Yeah.
01:21Got it.
01:22And, I mean, like you say, are you fearful then that people like yourselves will be affected in a similar way?
01:29Do you say you've got a group in this area?
01:30Yeah.
01:31There is a, yeah, we've got a group.
01:32There's a whole lot of people we know that you're in the group service.
01:36They capture us.
01:37They are still, they're older than us.
01:38They are active.
01:39But, yeah, they capture us into town.
01:40They capture us to really know.
01:41And whereas, I'm going to put it that they're there and they'll come down, say, Coventry Street, they'll go to the pedestrian crossing, white ranges across out of the road.
01:56That's going to be the sign for them.
01:57They're still going to be doing exactly the same, but we've got all this inconvenience.
02:08Are there any sort of questions left and answered with it or are you happy with sort of what the information is going to be?
02:15Oh, we're happy with it.
02:16We're going to have to put up with it because we are going to be able to stop it, I think.
02:20It's going to happen.
02:21It's going to happen.
02:22It's one of those things we know that over the next 10, 15, 20 years, this area is going to change completely.
02:29That's it.
02:30There's a lot of younger ones come on now.
02:32We'll want to ride the boats.
02:33You've got to look to them.
02:34It's great for them.
02:35Up to me personally.
02:38I cause more hassle.
02:41How long have you been in the area?
02:43I imagine you've already seen it go through the fabric of the term.
02:4673 years.
02:4774 years.
02:48I'm 74 now.
02:49I've moved twice from one side of the road to the other.
02:54That's it.
02:55I ain't going nowhere else.
02:57But no stranger to change then?
02:59No.
03:00No.
03:01No.
03:02We had the same theories, games when they had done the ring road at the top of the road.
03:06We got on with it now.
03:07It's like when we had the awesome courts.
03:12Obviously you're here giving information on the East Park Link.
03:17Can you just explain what the Link's aim is to be?
03:21The Link is part of a series of schemes all the way along the A454 Willenau Road.
03:28They're designed to improve people's ability to move along the road by whatever mode of transport they want to go.
03:36And in particular to make it better for pedestrians and cyclists.
03:40So we're looking to create a continuous cycle route along the road as part of this scheme.
03:46And better connections to the residential area either side of it.
03:51Perfect.
03:52And obviously you're here fielding questions from the public today.
03:56Have you received sort of...
03:58What is the sort of message of people coming in and talking to yourself?
04:02Well obviously people have different views on this depending on what their personal circumstances are.
04:09What their life pressures are.
04:11And we know that many people will want us to keep the traffic flow as stable as possible.
04:17Which we intend to do.
04:19We are aiming not to disrupt the traffic flow significantly.
04:23But we do want to provide better pedestrian facilities so that people can cross the road more easily.
04:29We do want to make it a realistic possibility that people will make cycle journeys along this road in safety.
04:36And that's why we're putting some of the features of these schemes in.
04:39So is that where the issue is raised by cyclists in the area?
04:44Certainly we're aware that cyclists particularly consider this road a very dangerous road to cycle along.
04:51And there isn't much in the way of provision to make that safe at the moment.
04:55But we also understand that pedestrians are quite concerned about safely crossing the road.
05:00So the things that we can do to make that better we're trying to include as part of this scheme.
05:06Good and just finally can you sort of share the plan and sort of time scale on the project?
05:12Yes well assuming that this consultation goes as well as we hope.
05:17What we're aiming to do is start building the project in the autumn of next year, 2026.
05:24And it should be a 12 month construction.
05:28So firstly...
