UK eyes Visiting Forces Agreement

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. confirms receiving a letter from the British Ministry of Defense expressing interest in forging a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement between the United Kingdom and the Philippines. Teodoro said he is waiting for Malacañang’s go signal to proceed with the negotiations.

00:00It was a letter from the British Minister of Defense expressing their intention to enter into a Visiting Forces Agreement with us.
00:13We welcome this development because then it will be the second European country that we will be negotiating a SOCFA with.
00:23And the next step will be for me to be authorized by the President to negotiate such a SOCFA.
00:33They're very interested, of course, in multilateral maritime exercises.
00:41And for us, we see a fit also with our army and their army being smaller armed forces.
00:48And we can learn a lot from the way that they operate as a smaller army.
