Japan and the Philippines launch military intel pact talks during Marcos visit to Tokyo

The Philippines and Japan agree to negotiate an intelligence sharing agreement, as the two nations draw closer under the increasing shadow of China's naval ambitions. “In today's meeting, first, in the field of security, we reached an agreement to commence official negotiations on a General Security of Military Information Agreement,” says Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as she hosts Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos.

00:31We have a brief meeting in Kuala Lumpur last October on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit.

01:29As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between
01:35our two countries, I am pleased to announce that we have elevated our relationship from
01:41a strengthened strategic partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
01:47We jointly announce the commencement of the negotiations for the General Security of
01:52Military Information Agreement, as well as for the delimitation of our maritime borders.
01:59These are very important steps to further strengthen our defense cooperation
02:04and to uphold a rules-based maritime order.
02:08They will enhance the mutual trust between our two countries.
02:13Our discussions reaffirmed our commitment to further advance cooperation across key areas,
02:18including economic partnership, energy resilience, decarbonization, cooperation in defense and security,
02:25maritime matters, as well as emerging and future-oriented sectors.
02:30We had meaningful exchanges on regional and global issues,
02:34including challenges that are now emerging in the Indo-Pacific region,
02:38and of course the developments in the Middle East and their impact on energy security.
