00:00After 26 years of owning a hair salon called Canvas in Sittingbourne, Shelley, the owner, decided it was time for a drastic change.
00:08There was no money in the salon anymore. It was getting really, there's no new people coming up.
00:16As years ago, we'd have people coming in all the time asking for jobs, but no one's really going into hairdressing anymore.
00:23So I knew I had to make a change before really things got too bad.
00:27The natural thing to go into was medicine, even though I wasn't qualified in it, but I've got a very good friend who is.
00:33After first being a customer for many years, Shelley approached Lorraine with a bold question.
00:38Have you ever thought about opening a medical clinic, as you do? I do have mad ideas sometimes.
00:44And she said, well, on the business side of it, I couldn't do, you know, I've not got the premises because there's a lot of things that go into it.
00:52It's not just medical, it's the situation with the building, doing it all up.
00:58Shelley describes Lorraine as the brains of the project, handling the certifications and management of the new clinic.
01:04Obviously, CQC is, you know, top standard for any health, you know, whether it's a GP surgery, whether it's a massive hospital.
01:12CQC are the ones that register everybody.
01:15So coming from a medical background, I knew a lot of them, but I didn't know all of them because I've not worked as a manager of a health centre.
01:23So the managerial side of it was quite tricky, but we managed with the help of others to get through all the questions and the answers.
01:33Handling the building and decoration side of the operation, Shelley, alongside Lorraine, hope to spruce up the clinic to offer many different services.
01:40Because I've been here for 26 years with the building, I sort of know that side of it.
01:45That's the part I can contribute.
01:47So, and Lorraine done all the hard work, really.
01:52We're going to offer a very vast range of services within the clinic.
01:57All of our nurses and healthcare assistants are going to be, they're all registered with the NMC or, you know, whoever they need to be registered with.
02:04So everyone is fully trained to what they need to be doing.
02:09So we'll be doing things like weight loss jabs, we can do blood testing, we can do travel, contraceptive coils and implants.
