00:00In Kathmandu, the funerals for many of the 72 killed last week in an uprising that made history in Nepal.
00:18What started as Gen Z protests against corruption turned violent when met with an Internet shutdown and a police crackdown.
00:26One fallen government later, the country, well, figuring out how to reform and first, how to pick up the pieces from the millions in damage.
00:39This is my office, and I'm disheartened to see its condition.
00:45The youths have brought change, but they should not have destroyed their physical infrastructure.
00:49This represents our long-standing history.
00:55The infrastructure itself had harmed no one.
00:59The real issues lay in people's character, awareness and behavior.
01:04The buildings had nothing to do with it.
01:06For more, let's cross to Vishnu Kumari Tandon, consultant for governance and citizens' engagement at the World Bank.
01:19Thank you for speaking with us here on France 24.
01:23Thank you very much for having me.
01:25Is there a feeling that the dust is settling now in Nepal after the heady and sometimes violent events of last week?
01:34Yeah, for sure.
01:39It's not like what we saw last week.
01:44So people are trying to calm down and Gen Zs are trying to be more organized.
01:52They are supporting the government that is formed right now that contains only three, a ministry of council with three ministers.
02:02Each minister is holding more than one ministry.
02:06So they're trying to work, rebuild Nepal, and Gen Zs, they are supporting them for now.
02:14What's the book, if you will, on the new interim prime minister, Shushila Karki, the first female prime minister in Nepal's history?
02:23Yes, that's right.
02:25So, yes, Shushila Karki is the first female prime minister, and she was already the head of the Supreme Court, and she was not supported by the previous government.
02:40But Gen Zs really wanted her to be the prime minister, and she's the one who formed this new government, and she assigned three new ministers.
02:52And now the council of ministers has just four ministers, including her.
02:57So this is great news that for the first time we have a female prime minister who is willing to work with the young generations and the whole Nepalese.
03:12So that is positive.
03:13People are taking it in a very positive way.
03:16And the minister that she has appointed, they are known for their good work, and they have always fought against corruption.
03:30So people are hopeful, but we will have to see, because the three biggest parties, political parties that were in the government,
03:44if they, we don't know what actions they will take, if they want to oppose it or if they will accept it.
03:55It's still very early to say anything.
03:59Vishnu Kumari Tandon, so many thanks for speaking with us here on France 24.
