00:00As Sydney warms up, its western suburbs will feel the heat more than most.
00:07For Western Sydney, this will mean longer, hotter, more frequent heat waves.
00:11I think our households will especially be feeling the pinch in terms of their energy bills.
00:16Sana Shah works for Sweltering Cities, a national advocacy organization concerned about the effects of extreme heat on our cities.
00:25Yesterday's National Climate Risk Assessment Report has confirmed her worst fears.
00:31Having that laid out so plainly by the report, not only that heat waves are increasing in severity and frequency,
00:36but also that we're going to have such a massive increase in heat deaths is extremely concerning.
00:41In the worst case scenario, the report does predict a significant rise in heat wave-related deaths.
00:47While reducing emissions requires a multi-governmental, planet-wide effort,
00:52some see more local solutions that can take the edge off.
00:56We've planted 12,000 mature trees in the last four years, which makes a difference.
01:01But we've also given out 30,000 trees to our residents to be able to plant.
01:05I think green spaces are, you know, a must in city areas.
01:10But it's not just planting trees, it's also how we build our cities.
01:15There's so many houses and so many black roofs, you know, you'll get a two or three degree difference on the same day.
01:21People like myself can't afford air conditioning and other stuff and people need to cool down.
01:26Not everyone is sweating it.
01:28I'm not at all worried about it. I don't really fall into the trap of the mainstream media and this climate change thing.
01:35The federal government is set to announce its 2035 emissions target this month.
01:40I do believe that they should be setting a good target.
01:44Not just a fair enough target, but an ambitious target if you wish.
01:47Targets that will shape the future of this country for generations to come.
