To help us each make our case, we brought along the Cardo PackTalk Edge ORV to stay in communication with each other throughout the entire ride. Packtalk Edge ORV: Code 'octane' for 10% off https://cardosystems.rfrl.co/z8qy5

The RZR family is home to a vast range of side-by-sides. From simple trail rigs to all-out desert rippers, there's a RZR for everyone. But that got us thinking. What's so different about some of Polaris' most popular models? To answer that question, we took a 2025 Polaris RZR XP4 1000 Ultimate and a 2025 Polaris RZR Pro R4 Ultimate to Windrock Park and put them both to the test. Which one wins? We'll let you decide.

00:00The Polaris Razor has tons of models and trims to choose from, but which one is right for you?
00:05Should you go with something tame like the Trail S or the XP1000, or go with a top-low-line desert shredder like the Pro R or the Pro S?
00:12We had the same question, which is why we brought these two razors to Winrock Park to find out.
00:17And to help me, I brought along our editor, Anders Carlson.
00:21Anders, tell me about this first rig.
00:22Well, right behind me, we've got a Polaris XP4 1000 Ultimate.
00:27Now, this is kind of a jack-of-all-trades sort of rig.
00:29It's neither the sportiest nor the most extreme or the most crawliest kind of rig that you can possibly have.
00:35It's kind of a jack-of-all-trades rig that does everything pretty, pretty well.
00:38Wouldn't you say?
00:39It is pretty good, but how much power does it make?
00:41Well, it does make 114 horsepower, and it does have Fox shocks, so it's kind of in the middle.
00:46It's not, like, super, super crazy horsepower, but it's good enough.
00:50Yeah, but you said it was a jack-of-all-trades, but I think it's a master of none,
00:53which is why we brought along this Razor Pro R4 Ultimate.
00:57This is Polaris's wide-open desert shredder side-by-side that kicked off the horsepower race.
01:02That horsepower came from a naturally aspirated inline-four that made 225 horsepower.
01:07Now, at the time, that was the most horsepower we've ever seen out of a side-by-side.
01:11Now, that's since been dethroned, but that doesn't take away from how good this rig actually is.
01:15Well, God bless horsepower wars.
01:17You know, it's kind of funny that you mentioned desert shredding as it's raining here at Windrock.
01:21We are in-
01:22So, that's a lot of horsepower.
01:23It is right.
01:24How much of it can you actually put to the ground, this soggy, wet ground?
01:27That is a great question.
01:28We're going to take it on what's called G1 up here.
01:31It's a nice little gravel road all the way to the top of the mountain.
01:33We're going to stretch its legs a little bit and see what it can actually do,
01:36and we're going to compare it to this Razor XP4 1000.
01:40We're going to get geared up and hit the trail.
01:41Now, Anders, which one do you want to drive first?
01:43You know, I think I'm going to take the family rig, you know, but in a sense, they're both ultimate rigs.
01:47They are.
01:47These are the top-of-the-line rigs from both of them, so it's a fair competition.
01:50This is the top model, and this is the top model.
01:53So, it's super mucky out there.
01:54So, Anders, how are we going to talk to each other out there?
01:56I figured it would yell.
01:57I used to be in a band, and I'm really good at yelling, but do you have a better idea?
02:00Well, my tinnitus wouldn't like that.
02:02So, we're using the Cardo Pac-Toc Edge ORV.
02:04First and foremost, the Cardo Pac-Toc Edge ORV installs with no tools required.
02:09That's right.
02:09All you got to do is pull off the adhesive backing, clean your helmet with a provided alcohol wipe, and stick it right on there.
02:15The actual unit also uses magnets to connect.
02:17That means all you have to do is pop it on there.
02:19No annoying clicks, no annoying beeps.
02:21All you got to do is stick it to your helmet, and you're good to go.
02:24The Pac-Toc Edge uses dynamic mesh communication.
02:27It can group up to 15 comms up to a mile ahead, and it can extend up to 5 miles the more comms you have.
02:33Now, the technology does require line of sight, but if anyone is disconnected, it reconnects as soon as you're back in range.
02:39It also uses natural voice recognition, which means you don't have to mess with any fancy buttons.
02:44All you have to do is say, hey, Cardo, and it'll do whatever you want it to do.
02:47But you can also connect Hey Siri and OK Google to connect directly to your phone.
02:51This unit is IP67 dust, mud, and waterproof, which means on a day like today, your Cardo will stay safe.
02:58It uses JBL speakers and one-way directional mics, meaning it cuts out engine and wind noise.
03:03This thing also comes with audio mixing, meaning you can have your music, your GPS, and talking to your buddies all running at the same time.
03:10And if you connect to the Cardo Connect app, you get over-the-air updates, you can adjust the mic sensitivity, program JBL audio profiles, and it has audio recording for content creation.
03:20That's important for us for obvious reasons.
03:22And today we will be using Cardo's all-new waterproof mics.
03:26Again, it's gloomy, it's rainy out here, we're going to get wet, we're already wet, and it just helps to have an extra layer of protection on your Cardos.
03:33All right, I think we're ready to hit the trailer.
03:34I am in the Polaris Razor Pro R Ultimate, and Andres is in the Polaris Razor XP1000.
03:44The XP4 1000 Ultimate.
03:46XP4 1000 Ultimate, my bad, my bad.
03:48First impressions, what do you think about these rigs?
03:51What do you think about your rig?
03:52Boy, you know, we're just on asphalt right now, but I like it.
03:55I think it's tractable, it's friendly, nothing untoward is happening.
03:59I think you've got more rig than we really need here on this wet and rainy and slimy day at Windrock.
04:04That's what I think.
04:05I have the Polaris Dynamics Fox Active Suspension.
04:09You can see all the little buttons on my steering wheel.
04:12It's small between Baja, Baja, Baja, Baja, and Baja.
04:16But right now I'm keeping it in Baja just because I think that's the best Baja here.
04:20And especially the acting suspension.
04:22And it samples the terrain at something like, what, a thousand times per second?
04:27That is more times than I could sample terrain.
04:29So I'm impressed.
04:30And I've got to tell you, I've got Fox shocks as well, but I do not have the same fancy shocks as you do.
04:35I think they're doing a fine and capable job.
04:37However, we're going to find out as soon as we start hitting rocks, baby heads, boulders, and other stuff like that.
04:43We're going to see if your fancier setup with all the little gnomes inside the shocks, if that does anything.
04:49We haven't even talked about the price, right?
04:51I think that's the first big thing we need to get out of the way.
04:54That's where I'm going to come way ahead because I want to hear you say it.
04:57What's the MSR fee on that?
04:59Mine, as it sits, is $46,999.
05:03Okay.
05:04Yours, I think, is $27,999.
05:08Wow, that is almost a difference of $20,000.
05:12I know neither of us have a math degree, but even I can do that.
05:16And $19,000, $20,000 is a lot, a lot, a lot of money.
05:21$150,000 to $200,000 years of a Windrock pass.
05:24Heck, you can even buy a whole other Razor XB.
05:27They started something like, what, $17,999?
05:29Still, that's a whole other side-by-side that you can get for the price difference between these two things.
05:35And, you know, you've got to ask yourself, is it $20,000 more fun and capable?
05:41I'm not going to expect you to keep up with me.
05:43It's exhilarating how fast this thing is.
05:48When I got you in my line of sight, I felt like there was some life shredding there.
05:51I don't know about you, but right now, I do not give a crap about that $20,000.
05:56I am having $20,000 worth of fun right now.
05:59We're approaching that really now, which is kind of our stopping point.
06:02We are going to get out and see what we think about these rigs.
06:05Why did we think about these rigs?
06:07I don't know.
06:07I mean, I'm only, you know, batting $500.
06:09I got to tell you, this thing is very capable.
06:12I'm having a great time.
06:13Listen, you're sending it, and you're kind of hurting my feelings by getting ahead of me a little bit.
06:17So, that part is a little sad.
06:19I keep trying to, you know, hold off just a little bit, just so I'm not leaving you in the dust.
06:23Would you say that you're holding me back, sir?
06:26But I do think that this thing is magnificent.
06:29When I hit the throttle, as soon as I got on that straightaway, it just ate.
06:33Like, 20 miles an hour to 60 miles an hour like that.
06:37And that's that 225 horsepower working.
06:39And it's the smoothness of the four-cylinder that gets you there.
06:42I've driven a ton of other rigs, and it's hard to compare to a Pro-R.
06:45There's just nothing else like it, man.
06:47Were you putting all those ponies in the mud at all times?
06:50I don't think so.
06:51Absolutely.
06:51Whereas I was maxing out.
06:53I was using almost all those 114 ponies at all points in the trail or whatever.
06:57So, is that more fun?
06:58So, I do not think you're wrong on that side.
07:00There were not a lot of times that I was able to use that whole 225 horsepower.
07:05There were, like, maybe two straightaways where I could floor it and use it.
07:08This thing definitely is more fun in the desert.
07:11I can't admit that.
07:12But it's still a blast out here.
07:14Well, you know, one of the greatest parts about our jobs is that it's not our job to be correct, really.
07:19It's our job to be adaptive and to change minds.
07:21I can't wait to sit in that thing and see if it changes my mind.
07:24I think that we should trade rigs and head back down to the parking lot and see what we think down there.
07:28You know what?
07:29I'm going to try to hurt your feelings, too, by losing you and seeing if I can make a quick getaway.
07:34Let's see if we can do it.
07:35Okay.
07:35Well, it is my turn in the Razor XP4 1000.
07:39For how tame it is, I was honestly surprised at how capable it is.
07:43Our old boss and I took it down some pretty harsh trails, and it didn't seem to care very much.
07:49Pro-R has harnesses while this has seatbelts.
07:53I'm pleased to see that we got suicide doors.
07:55That makes me feel like I'm in a capable and danger-conquering rig.
07:59These brakes are not as good as the Pro-Rs.
08:02They feel very squishy.
08:04I have to say that I feel like a pirate, and I just want to go out on the trail.
08:08I just want to do pirate things to it, man.
08:11It does look like a boat.
08:12I will give you that.
08:14All right.
08:14You leave.
08:15Okay.
08:16Immediately, a lot smaller of a silhouette on this thing than yours.
08:21Tires are smaller.
08:23Rig is narrower.
08:24Shorter wheelbase.
08:25What's the difference in width between these two?
08:27That's a 74, and I believe this is a 64.
08:31This thing just goes over anything you point it at.
08:34Literally, just point it at danger and just hit the gas.
08:37I can already feel the difference between your 32-inch tires and my 30-inch tires.
08:42I got to tell you, it's a little addictive to just be able to stomp on the gas and light the tires up,
08:46no matter what you're doing.
08:48Low speed, high speed, middle of turns, whatever.
08:50This thing is so much fun.
08:52This is literally like the honey badger of UTVs.
08:54So, you started off in the Pro-R.
08:56What did you think of the XP-1000?
08:59I like it.
09:00I'll start with I like it.
09:01I do like the Razer XP-1000.
09:04The problem is that this is just so much better.
09:07It really is.
09:08And to me, $20,000 is worth it.
09:11When I pinned it up the hill and I could feel that entire naturally aspirated 225 horsepower straight to the wheels,
09:18no turbo lag or anything, I was fine with it.
09:21I was fine with the price.
09:22I hate doing this, but I do kind of see your point a little bit.
09:27114 ponies is pretty good, and I was putting a lot of them down at all times.
09:32That was a lot of fun to just mash the pedal to the floor and just feel all the tires light up.
09:37And the extra width, we're at 74 inches.
09:40You can get into lots of trouble real quick in this thing.
09:43However, there is a lot of forgiveness, and there's a lot more margin for error.
09:46When that thing's going 10 out of 10, this thing feels like it's maybe 7 out of 10.
09:50Yeah, absolutely.
09:51And at the same time, we say all this that we love this thing and we'd rather have it,
09:55and that extra $20,000 is worth it.
09:57But at the same time, I understand the appeal for this.
09:59I understand someone who wants to come out here on the weekends,
10:02who wants to pay basic used car money for a side-by-side and not new car money for a side-by-side,
10:08take it out here on the weekends, have their family out here, and have a good time.
10:11And you can do that with the Razer XP1000.
10:13My verdict?
10:14I'm going to split the difference.
10:15I'm actually going to stay with the Polaris Razer XP1000 Ultimate,
10:19and I'm going to take that $20,000, and I'm going to get annual memberships to 200 of my favorite friends,
10:24because I have a lot of friends, and I'm really extremely wealthy and rich.
10:27That still blows my mind that that's the difference between the two,
10:30that you can get 200 Winrock passes.
10:31We're deciding it's 200.
10:32Yeah, we're just going to say 200.
10:33200.
10:34We're estimating that it's around 200 annual Winrock passes for the price difference between these two.
10:39The bigger wheels, the beadlock tires, the power, the dynamic suspension, even the color.
10:45I just, it looks like a luxury rig.
10:47It looks like something that you spend $45,000 on, or $47,000 in its case.
10:53That dynamic suspension was crazy.
10:55I started going over boulders, I felt nothing.
10:57I'm not even feeling that.
10:59Like, those bumps, I know it's not anything, like, super intense.
11:02It's just my suspension doing its little creepy, trolly thing.
11:05Started hitting ridges, I felt nothing.
11:07Before you even know what you're going over, it already senses it, and it's almost unearthly.
11:12It feels like a rocket ship.
11:13That's about it for us at UTV Driver.
