One person dead, seven hospitalised after gas leak at Sydney restaurant

An unexplained gas leak in Sydney’s north-west has left one man dead and several police officers in hospital. The 25-year-old who died was as cleaner who was working at a restaurant. The emergency prompted a huge response when firefighters discovered extremely high levels of carbon monoxide.

00:00A deadly hazmat emergency unfolds at a Riverston restaurant.

00:06Five police officers, a father and his son were taken to hospital.

00:11They managed to survive, but another man couldn't be saved.

00:16Extremely tragic. A person has been rescued out of this building,

00:20non-responsive, unconscious, and was being resuscitated.

00:25Unfortunately, they could not be revived.

00:27The 25-year-old cleaner had called his boss saying he felt unwell.

00:31When the boss arrived with his son, they found him unconscious and phoned 000.

00:37The five police officers have attempted CPR on that male

00:41to the point where they felt there was something,

00:45probably a little amiss in terms of the environment they were in.

00:48But it was too late.

00:50They too had succumbed to the effects of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

00:54Firefighters wearing protective clothing, including breathing apparatus,

00:58entered that structure with the gas detectors and they identified

01:02that there was like a carbon monoxide in there and some other products

01:06that you just can't survive in.

01:08All seven people were then transported to Mount Druitt, Hawkesbury,

01:11and Blacktown hospitals in a stable condition.

01:14Fire and rescue have been coming and going from the scene for the majority of today

01:18as they comb through the evidence to determine what exactly caused this fatal gas leak.

01:24It's shocking news for me. It's so bad. I'm feeling so sad as well.

01:29My three chefs are living upstairs. They are all okay.

01:34The business was closed at the time. It's unclear when the restaurant will reopen.

01:39I'm sure the firsténdice is closed at the time and I'm living upstairs in the building.
