00:00Here he comes then, Freda de la Rosa. Now, what happened there? Oops, that's not going to help him.
00:05That's not going to help him at all. Just getting the braking wrong there at turn 12.
00:09I think he managed to hook up a late apex, so he might gain a little on the way out to recover some of that lost time.
00:15De la Rosa, 13th at the moment, and some four-tenths off the pace of his teammate.
00:21Caren Pilbeam there, Webber's race engineer, the man who made the call in Malaysia to go on to intermediates when everyone was still on wet.
00:32In that monsoon at Sepang, and it proved magnificent because it put Webber on pole.
00:38And it's the start of the process, which has seen the Australian move to the top of the World Championships for the first time.
00:45Level on points with his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, and of course Red Bull leading the constructors' table for the first time, too.
00:52Pedro de la Rosa, the very funny man, but he won't be laughing out there at the moment.
00:57He's not coming together. He's sort of abandoned that lap.
01:00Whether he's just cooling the tyres a bit, no, he's pitted.
01:03Five and a quarter minutes to go. Time for everybody to have another run.
01:08Who do we think is comfortable? I don't think anybody's truly comfortable.
01:12Those that have sort of done 26-9, 27 flat, the top three, which is Hamilton and the two Red Bulls, may feel they don't need to go out again.
01:20Everybody else has to go out.
01:23Yes, Jenson Button's time, but four tenths down on Webber.
01:26It's pretty much the same as Petrov, pretty much the same as Kubica.
01:30That's surprising.
01:32Michael Schumacher just a tenth shy.
01:33Likewise, Felipe Massa.
01:35Kobayashi on the same sort of mark.
01:37So it is all very tight there, but what about those just down below?
01:39You can see the Toro Rosso's group together, Bohemian Al-Gashwari, the two Williams group together, Barrichel and Hülkenberg.
01:46Well, Alonso and Rosberg out of position then and out of the top ten at the moment.
01:50That's a lot of pressure sitting inside that car.
01:52Now you've got to go out and spot the perfect lap and you've got one of them available to you.
01:57That's hard.
01:57Where are you on the Rosberg doesn't like this new Mercedes car?
02:02It's all for that man there, Michael Schumacher.
02:05Do you buy into that?
02:06Well, the facts speak for themselves.
02:09Michael prefers.
02:10He's gone a lot better since they put the longer wheelbase on it because they didn't have it in Monaco.
02:14But Michael's just finding his way still as well.
02:17And he will be more demanding.
02:19Michael knows more what he wants.
02:21And Nico needs to jump up and down and stamp his feet if he wants a car going in his direction.
02:25Because Michael will be using all of the tools available to him in the garage and inside the car to improve his performance.
02:34Seems Michael Schumacher, as ever, is dander if he does and dander if he doesn't.
02:37I mean, blamed at one stage for being someone who was too ring rusty and damaging his reputation.
02:43And now he's coming back onto the pace.
02:45We saw that wonderfully with his Monaco pass.
02:49So he's coming back on song.
02:51Thermal image then in the garage.
02:52You can see the heat there of the tyres and the engine.
02:54And often easy to underestimate exactly how hot those tyres need to be in order to perform.
03:00Yeah, they're about 100 degrees centigrade as they're sitting there in their blankets.
03:05And they try to get a lot of heat through the rim as well and just heat the gas up in the tyre.
03:12It's a fascinating subject as to how the rubber of a tyre generates grip.
03:17And in fact, there's a great article that Pat Simmons is doing in Racetech magazine that I'm learning a lot from.
03:24It is, it's quite complex exactly how these tyres work and how you need to use them as a driver.
03:31And we see that a lot this year, don't we, through the Grand Prix.
03:34Michael Schumacher then is fastest through that first sector.
03:40Softer tyre, all of them seemingly on that particular compound at the moment.
03:44Down towards turn 9, from 190 down to 80 miles an hour.
03:48Up through that kink, uphill.
03:51Is he still on the pace? Is he still setting that pace?
03:55Sweeping right-handed, he's dropped just a little bit there.
03:57Three-tenths of a second, even though it's a personal best.
04:00Felipe Massa has just matched Michael Schumacher with the first sector.
04:03As he comes out now to the final through corners.
04:05Seeming to get that braking quite right, but let's see if he can have speed through into the final corner now.
04:15He's seventh at the moment.
04:16This longer wheelbase Mercedes looks a bit of a handful through the slow corners.
04:20Let's put in P5 on a 27.4.
04:23That's not super comfortable.
04:24The P11 at the moment is a 1.27, so he's only a quarter of a second inside.
04:31As his wife, Corinna, there, obviously fascinated by qualifying.
04:35She's doing a text or something.
04:36Time for dinner, maybe.
04:38Felipe Massa threw into fourth, so that pushes Schumacher down.
04:42But we'll keep an eye on Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton.
04:45Too fast to spend for the first sector.
04:48That's a problem.
04:49Right, now you've got to get on with it, son.
04:51You've got a minute and a half left to get, well, he's right near the end of the lap.
04:56So that blew that.
04:57Now he's under pressure.
04:59Number didn't qualify at all in Monaco two weeks ago, and this is why he's under pressure now.
05:04He just dropped his right rear onto the white line and all of the other forces that were going on there.
05:10And hopefully they've fueled it for that scenario.
05:13Every lap of fuel you carry costs you about a tenth of a second.
05:17So I wonder if they just put a safety margin in it.
05:21He's going on.
05:22He's carrying on anyway.
05:23If they put a safety fuel margin in that Ferrari.
05:26Ted, what can you tell us?
05:28I don't think they did because he's only got L1 on his pitboard, Martin.
05:32So surely Massa's only doing one hot lap.
05:34He's got L1 as well.
05:35And Alonso, the guy's doing Alonso's pitboard, his physio Fabrizio, he'll know.
05:41And he's sitting standing there on the pitboard shaking his head.
05:44But he's quick just to get to the top ten.
05:46But Webber's just gone fastest from Sebastian Vettel, who's responded by going quicker than anyone else to the first sector.
05:53Two red balls out in front.
05:55They've done it by a tenth between themselves.
05:57And then Vettel to Hamilton in third.
06:00Still out on track, but he's a bit slower there, Hamilton.
06:02Just winding it in.
06:03But what about Fernando Alonso, 12th quickest at the moment.
06:07He's somehow got to find at least two or three tenths to get into the top ten.
06:10I'll tell you what, his sector times are not that good either.
06:13I mean, hopefully he's got enough fuel to get him in on the in-lap if he does get into top ten.
06:17But he needs something pretty special through these last three turns.
06:21Does Fernando Alonso looking at his sector times?
06:23He's got that right at least a lot better than the last time he was round to 12, 13 and 14 final corner.
06:29A chart to the line now for the double world champion.
06:32Is he going to miss out?
06:33No, he's not going to get through.
06:35Fernando Alonso has got it wrong.
06:36And Fernando Alonso is out.
06:41Sebastian Vettel's just gone fastest.
06:43So Red Bull from Red Bull.
06:45And just let's look at that advantage now.
06:47Almost up to three tenths of a second there between Vettel and his nearest non-Red Bull car, Lewis Hamilton, who's decided he's done enough.
06:55He's into the pits.
06:56Likewise, Massa, who has continued that improvement.
07:00He's going to out-qualify his teammates.
07:02And Michael's going for it still because he's on the bubble in P10.
07:07But I don't see anybody out there that could knock him off now.
07:12All the other cars going slower, aren't they?
07:13Yeah, I think they'll call him in the pits.
07:16Try telling that to Al Gashwari, who's flinging the car.
07:19But it's still slower than Michael Schumacher for all the rallying he's doing.
07:22He's half a second down.
07:24Al Gashwari's almost a tenth of a second there.
07:26So that's not going to be good enough.
07:27So they'll call Schumacher in.
07:31The Toro Rosso's are not going to make it.
07:32But Alonso then has let Kobayashi into the top ten shootout.
07:36Well, that's what they wanted.
07:37And Kobayashi's done it again.
07:39Third time then.
07:41Out-qualifying his teammate.
07:42And he's into the final part of qualifying.
07:45What's Al Gashwari managing, just out of interest?
07:48Well, it's not going to improve his time.
07:51Lost it in the final sector.
07:52So, congratulations to Kamui Kobayashi.
07:57Giorgio Asconelli there.
07:58Toro Rosso technical director.
08:00Former race engineer to Martin Brundle.
08:03Having to chew just a little bit.
08:04Because that is his two cars out in the second part of qualifying.
08:09Buemi, 14.
08:10Al Gashwari, 16.
08:12What about Williams, though?
08:13And what about that man there?
08:14Fernando Alonso, interscrutineering.
08:17Driver error.
08:18He lost the freshness of the new tyres.
08:21But I'm still surprised.
08:23And we know that the Ferrari's not especially good on these soft tyres.
08:26I'm still surprised he didn't put one out of the bag on the second lap.
08:29So, a Ferrari out.
08:30Fernando Alonso.
08:31Sutil's gone for Force India.
08:33One of the Sauvers.
08:34De La Rosa.
08:35Two Toro Rosso's.
08:36Two Williams.
08:38All to play for still with the Red Bulls fastest in Q2.
08:41And that is Fernando Alonso struggling in the second part of qualifying.
08:49And struggling to 12th place on the grid for tomorrow's Turkish Grand Prix.
08:54David, fascinating turn of events.
08:57Well, indeed.
08:57How silly do I feel, having predicted that Kobayashi would be first guy to fall in the first part of qualifying.
09:02How much are we paying you again?
09:03Yeah, absolutely.
09:04Well, the form didn't look good in practice this morning.
09:07But they've certainly got the car working.
09:09Here you see we're on board with Alonso.
09:12He puts a wheel on the white line under braking.
09:14And I think that's why he lost the back end.
09:16Obviously, when they hit the brakes here, they hit a spike of 5G when he's hit the brake pedal.
09:22And then just being on that white line has taken away a bit of adhesion.
09:25So, obviously, not the sort of error we're used to seeing from Fernando.
09:30But Monaco and now here in Turkey.
09:33Just going back.
09:34David, you shouldn't feel so bad.
09:35I didn't think that Petrov would have a particularly good qualifying.
09:39And he's in the top 10 as well.
09:40So, that's both of us.
09:41We don't seem to know what we're talking about these days.
09:44But all the experts are struggling at the moment, of course.
09:46Ferrari have been experts around this circuit many times.
09:49Felipe Massa has enjoyed three pole positions.
09:51Felipe Massa has won here on three occasions.
09:53He goes in the final part of qualifying.
09:54Fernando Alonso doesn't.
